Grand Forks resident Bev has been collecting small ornaments and structures for the past 20 years to create a Christmas village over five metres long. Each piece has its own story and has been purchased from various locations. It takes her around four days to strategically connect all the lights and piece her vilage together. Two men were arrested and have been formally charged following a robbery at a Greenwood motel early Monday morning, where a female employee was tied up. Charanjeet Singh Khosa, 26, and Ravinder Singh Mettla, 28, from Calgary, Alta. have been charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats, assault, break-and-enter, robbery and extortion relating to the incident. According to RCMP, the Midway detachment received a call of a robbery and forcible confinement at 1:37 a.m. After arriving at the scene, investigators spoke to a female employee of the Greenwood motel. The suspects had tied her up during a robbery but otherwise, she was not physically harmed. Other Boundary area detachments were noti-
fied and at 2 a.m., Grand Forks RCMP stopped a grey Nissan Pathfinder on Highway 3 – the two males were arrested. The investigation is continuing according to police. “There was a lot of work done to get to the point where we had charge approval from Crown counsel,” Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison explained to the Grand Forks Gazette yesterday. “The charges now have been laid, the investigation is continuing, however, we do have enough evidence to proceed at this time but with a case like this, there’s an awful lot more yet to be done.” Both have been remanded into custody until tomorrow when they will once again be heard by the Judicial Justice of the Peace to determine their further detention or release, pending an appearance in court to answer to the charges, Grand Forks RCMP said. – Originally appeared on grandforksgazette.ca
A collapsed culvert under Boundary Drive has caused rising water levels in neighbouring homes and concern from city staff. The city became aware of the problem when affected residents expressed concerns about high water tables north of Central Avenue and along 17th Street in an environmentally sensitive wetland area. Hal Wright, manager of operations for the city’s public works and operations, pointed out they originally thought it was due to the record high levels of precipitation this year. “Especially in June when we had almost three times greater than the recorded record, as well as in November there was quite a bit of moisture,” he said. “Just to be sure I had the crews go out and check the flows under the roadways and blockages so we’re sure there was free flow.”
