Annual allowable cut report, a ‘what if’ scenario AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After the announcement the Gold Pan’s timber supply increased by 600,000 cubic metres, Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson isn’t buying it – especially after reading the official report. “This is just a modeling exercise,” Simpson said. “It’s a what if scenario.” In a release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Resource Operations, it states “a new silvicultural strategy analysis has been completed that identifies a 600,000 cubic

metre increase in midterm timber supply over previous projections in the Quesnel timber supply area.” However, a document obtained by the Observer, the Draft Modelling and Analysis Report for Type III Silvaculture Strategy, cautions the “optimistic” findings. “The new information used in this analysis has yet to be fully tested under sensitivity analyses and, as such, should be considered cautiously,” the report reads. Cariboo North’s Independent MLA, says government’s optimistic spin boils down to, “in

The press release from the ministry states, “the main reasons for the higher mid-term forecast in this analysis, as compared to the previous mid-term analysis conducted in summer 2011, are due to the incorporation of new information that indicates lower pine mortality estimates in young stands, more live pine remaining in older

stands and new managed stand site productivity estimates that these stands will grow faster than previously thought.” Parliamentary Secretary for Forestry, John Rustad applauded the report and the findings. “It’s great to see these initial results, which are encouraging for midterm timber supply,” he said. “These results also show the benefits of new digital and satellite technology.” However the analysis obtained by the Observer, again cautions the optimistic findings. “The shelf-life assumed in this analysis (20 years

second decade will be too degraded to process,” it reads. “Failure to salvage significantly dead stands in favour of greener stands that would be viable even after dead volumes are past their shelf life will result in both lower midterm and long term harvest levels.” Simpson said it’s situations such as this and the politicizing of issues that makes the public distrustful of the system. “There’s no trust anymore,” he said. “This report simply creates more timber by playing with the model.”

DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter

T

he six Quesnel councillors and mayor Mary Sjostrom presented their year end reports at Monday night’s council meeting. Sjostrom started, highlighting the strides the city has taken since last year, including multi centre funding and the West Quesnel land stability project. “The North Cariboo Multi Centre received $4 million from the province, $2 million from Northern Development Initiative Trust and $1 million thanks to a donation from West Fraser Timber,” Sjostrom said. She also reminded city residents this multi centre is for them and the city needs a lot of support. The mayor spoke about her trip to China, where she was accompanied by communications manager Matt Wood and SD28 superintendent Sue Ellen Miller. In addition to visiting China, Sjostrom visited Quesnel’s twin city, Shiraoi, Japan in June. “Shiraoi town mayor plans to visit Quesnel in September 2013 with a delegation,” Sjostrom said. Sjostrom explained the landfill has its new entrance open to the public in a trial run with the full scale system taking effect January 9, 2013. Other accomplishments Sjostrom is proud of were the hosting of the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Wheels In Motion tour as well as the mining industry’s investments in the city. Sushil Thapar presented

his report next, explaining his thoughts on the city’s financial state. “The city was left in financial disaster in 2003 when my first term started and history is repeating itself,” Thapar said. “The scars are green from the city hall building debt and we have infrastructure in critical shape.” Thapar said there are projects which he’d like to see move forward before others. “Avery Avenue did not even get looked at which is a safety concern where people are driving on the other side of the street,” Thapar explained. Thapar also pointed out four out of six water wells are performing past their life spans. In closing, Thapar thanked the volunteers who helped make Family Day a success. “Family Day serves 4,500 meals to public at no cost to them,” Thapar said. “Thank you taxpayers of Quesnel for providing seed money for Family Day.” Coun. Laurey Anne Roodenburg presented her 2012 report starting by crediting the ourQuesnel process with helping to guide the city council to make Quesnel the city the community sees it looking like in the future. “I just attended the affordable housing seminar, where the short and medium term goals were presented,” Roodenburg said. Something Roodenburg sees as an ongoing issue in Quesnel is the aging volunteer population. One of the biggest hurdles we’re about to run up against is the aging of our

volunteer base,” Roodenburg said. “They are well respected long time volunteers who have made that hard decision to bow out of those organizations which they’ve been a part of for many, many years. “Without volunteers in our community, many of these organizations will need financial assistance to hire people to fill many of those spots once filled with volunteers or they’ll simple shut down.” Roodenburg said the city’s strategic planning is helping form the future of Quesnel. “We’re planning what Quesnel will be like in five, 10 and 40 years,” she said. Next to present their report was Coun. Mike Cave who said he’s happy with the direction the affordable housing strategy and West Quesnel land stability project are going. “We finally started seeing some work with the West Quesnel Land Stability,” Cave said. “When an issue affects 30 per cent of the population for more than 10 years, it’s

nice to see progress.” Cave also applauded council’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships with First Nations, citing the Nazko gateway as well as the possible extension of city water into Lhtako Dene First Nation band lands. Cave concluded his presentation with his appreciation of council’s promotions of accessibility. “I’m very happy with council’s continued effort to promote accessibility,” he said. “This is a continuing process and it must keep evolving.” Coun. Scott Elliott was next in line and explained he’s been kept very busy in attending many meetings. Elliott attended the UBCM conference and the NCLGA conferences, where he leaned a lot “I’ve learned so much at these outings and from other elected officials that I’ve been able to meet,” Elliott said. He also worked as the city’s liaison to the different neighbourhood associations. “All these associations are working on bettering their areas and I applauded their continued efforts,” Elliott said. Another committee Elliott has been part of and has seen prosper is the tourism and civic pride committee. “In the past year, I’ve been in contact with many stakeholders and individuals who are passionate about our city and the tourism opportunities in our area,” Elliott explained. Elliott stressed the importance of having different views on the council as it

accurately speaks for the community. “We don’t always have the same opinions and I don’t think we should,” he said. “At the end of the day, most of us have been able to have our voices heard, debate the topic, vote and then move on.” Coun. Ed Coleman started his report out by mentioning the multi centre and the need to meet deadlines. “The multi centre is a project that will bring further revitalization to the downtown core and trigger other private sector investments,” he explained. “There are hundreds of priority actions which will take place in the next two years, some out of the ourQuesnel process as well as the work of the Quesnel and District Community Economic Corporation and all their partners.” Last to report on 2012 was Coun. John Brisco, who said it’s been a bit of a challenge but has enjoyed the candid conversations. “I always feel when I’m out and about, that at any moment I might become engaged in conversation with someone who needs information, wants to complain about something or has a jewel of advice in order to help me do my job better,” Brisco said. Brisco was busy during his first year as councillor, working on the volunteer citizen of the year committee, the Canada Day committee, as well as being part of several other groups and organizations. Friends of the Museum establish funds with QCF

The Quesnel Community Foundation and the Friends of the Quesnel Museum are pleased to announce that the Friends of the Quesnel Museum have donated $10,000 to the Community Foundation to establish the Friends of the Museum Agency Fund. This fund creates an endowment for the Quesnel Museum. The income from the fund will be paid annually to the Friends of the Museum and will be used for exhibits, programs and special projects. Citizens wishing to help preserve Quesnel’s heritage may do so by making a donation to the Agency Fund. In particular, it provides an opportunity for community members to undertake legacy planning, to make a bequest in their will, or to make a donation in memory of a loved one. The QCF has matched the Friends of the Museum initial investment of $10,000. As a result, the Fund is now at $20,000. An agency fund is a type of fund the Foundation can manage for other

organizations, which allows donors to stay personally involved with the distribution of gift dollars, while the foundation deals with administrative duties and offers grant-making expertise. As a charity, QCF was created to meet the community’s needs by growing and managing permanent investments. Our endowment totals more than $1,350,000. The interest from these investments is provided as grants and scholarships to community groups each year. Since 2002, we have awarded more than $220,100. Through the generosity of anonymous donors, QCF is able to offer a special incentive to support the foundation. Every gift received by Dec. 15 will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a total of $50,000. With the donation from Friends of the Museum and other very generous donors, we have more than $30,000 but still have $20,000 to raise before the deadline.

There is nothing more hypocritical than a politician who espouses fiscal prudence, preaches the evils of deficits and debt, and votes year over year for budgets with massive deficits. That’s what the BC Liberals have done this entire term: they have preached fiscal discipline, all the while requiring every one of their MLAs to vote “Yea” to successive budgets with huge deficits that grew the provincial debt by over $15 billion in just three years. The BC NDP will be no better. They too will force their MLAs to vote for deficit budgets because they don’t have the courage of their convictions to raise enough government revenue to be able to deliver on their promises to fix BC’s struggling health care, education, and social services systems. The ability to deficit finance without penalty is what allows provincial and federal politicians to reduce our taxes in order to buy our votes, while lying to us about being able to deliver quality public services. What if individual MLAs were fired if they voted for deficit budgets? Ludicrous, you say? Tell that to school trustees who get fired by the Education Minister if they try to present a deficit budget because they refuse to close schools and want the province to cover the real costs of delivering quality education to our children. Tell that to local government representatives who are bound by law to balance their budgets every year, and who don’t enjoy the luxury of federal and provincial politicians who can repeal their balanced budget “law” when it suits their interests. Until individual MLAs (and MPs) are forced to answer for voting for deficit financing, we’ll never have the difficult and necessary conversation about balancing our expectations for government with our willingness to pay. If we truly believe that public debt is unsustainable and that deficit financing is imprudent and dishonest, then we must find a way to force every parliamentarian to address the revenue and expense equation each year, or over the course of an election cycle. Forcing individual MPs and MLAs to be accountable when introducing and voting for our budgets would go a long way toward breaking the over-the-top party discipline that’s exercised today. Our elected representatives must be compelled to be more honest about the need to have revenue in order to deliver on the promises they make.

OPINIONS

Deal with it We’re all for the power of positive thought, but this is a bit much. This week the Annual Allowable Cut findings were released by Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations by way of media press releases and comments from Minister John Rustad. And it’s great news! According to the release, the Gold Pan area has seen an increase of 600,000 cubic metres of timber supply. However, the release fails to mention what the official analysis reports: That this new information on increased timber supply has not yet been fully tested and thus should be “considered cautiously.” Now we’re all for being positive and looking on the bright side, but when major industry has been teetering for close to a decade, why in the name of sweet baby Jesus would we fill our basket full of rainbows and what-ifs? Now is the time to plan for the worst case scenario, while hoping for the best. We simply cannot afford to sugar-coat any findings or predictions; it is not responsible, intelligent or ethical. The ministry release reads: “The main reasons for the higher mid-term forecast in this analysis, as compared to the previous mid-term analysis conducted in summer 2011, are due to the incorporation of new information that indicates lower pine mortality estimates in young stands, more live pine remaining in older stands and new managed stand site productivity estimates that these stands will grow faster than previously thought.” The analysis says: “The shelf-life assumed in this analysis (20 years since time of impact) is considered somewhat optimistic and it is likely that some of the volume harvested in the model at the beginning of the second decade will be too degraded to process.” Big difference. Yes, we’re aware there’s an election coming up and no, we are not so naive as to think these types of dealings are not related. But come on. We have an issue here, it’s serious, it’s not going away and there’s an opportunity to deal with it. It’s time to put on our adult underwear and face industry and the economy head-on. No spin, no hopeful predictions, just the plain, hard truth. Only then can we begin to form real solutions. We deserve it, but what’s more, we owe it to our kids. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

There’s no time like the present L

ast week I turned 46 years old and my kids offered up a delicious home-cooked dinner followed by a sweet dose of unexpected reality. “I wish I was you,” my nine-year-old daughter said as we enjoyed our decadent dessert. “But I’m kind of glad that I’m not.” “Why are you glad that you’re not?” I asked. “Because your life is half over,” my 12-year-old son chimed in from across the table. “It kind of is, Mom,” Daisy agreed, nodding sympathetically. “No offence.” Sure. None taken. Eager to know more about her first statement, I asked Daisy why she wished she were me. “Because you have an amazing life!” she replied. “And you look less old than you actually are,” Sam added, smiling. I was glad they thought I looked young for 46, but the fact remained that they thought I was old. Duh. Of course they did. I remember being my daughter’s age and thinking

On A Brighter Note my mom was ancient too. She was 27 at the time. I explained to my children that I planned on living to be at least 100 and that I hadn’t reached the halfway mark quite yet. “But you’re close,” Sam teased. “So, no wasting time, Mom.” And there it was, just the advice I needed to hear that day: no wasting time. Since the age of 17 I’ve spent many of my birthdays seriously reflecting on what I had yet to accomplish rather than simply enjoying them as a wonderful celebration of life. In that moment, I realized that I had been doing it again to some extent and it was completely unnecessary. Serious reflection could wait. I didn’t think my children

to live another 54 years or more, there’s a possibility I might not. So, if I die tomorrow, I hope to have enjoyed today – and the only person who can make that hope a reality is me. Back when I was a brooding teenager my dad, the eternal optimist, taught me that happiness is a mindset. “You can choose to be happy or you can choose to be miserable,” he said when I was in one of my darker moods. “Life will keep chugging along however you decide to feel.” I can’t say his words completely sunk in at the time, but as the years have passed, I’ve tried to live by that motto more and more. If I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t be able to recognize that my daughter was right: I do have an amazing life. I’m grateful that I have some incredible people in my world who remind me of that every day. Even on my birthday. Lori Welbourne is a Black Press syndicated columnist. had any idea what was going on in the deep recesses of my brain, but I guess they’re more perceptive than I realize. What they might see in me could be similar to what I saw in my parents when I was young and that is a person who works too hard for the future and doesn’t play enough in the present. Like most everyone I know, my life is full, my days are busy and my schedule is packed. I have ambitions and dreams that I’m working on constantly, but am I relishing the entire process or am I waiting to cross some magical finish line first? At times I feel like I’m loving every minute of it. There are times though, that I become lost in the chaos and life feels like one big chore rather than the magnificent gift that it is. I believe in dreaming big and going after my goals with fearless optimism. I also believe it’s important to remember to live every day to the fullest, because, as we all know, there are no guarantees that our life will be long. Even though my plan is

Editor: I would like to clarify the difference between censor and censure. Censure is a harsh rebuke, a serious and severe reprimand, akin to being excommunicated or expelled, and it has nothing to do with trying to keep a person quiet. JUDICIAL

New judges aim to cut court backlog The B.C. government is appointing nine new provincial court justices and launching a pilot project to reduce the wait time for hearing child protection cases. Attorney General Shirley Bond announced Tuesday that two judges will be assigned to work with Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree on the child protection case management project this spring and a second pilot program to reduce criminal court waiting times. Two of the new judges will be assigned to Surrey, the busiest provincial court in the province. One each will go to Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, Vancouver, Kamloops-Okanagan and the Northeast district. The changes are based on a review of B.C. court delays by lawyer Geoffrey Cowper, who called for a system to enforce timely hearings of evidence, to overcome a “culture of delay” and a tendency of defence lawyers to seek delays that weaken the prosecution’s case. The B.C. Crown Counsel Association has also identified Nanaimo and Richmond as having excessive delays. Association president Samiran Lakshman said in Surrey, it takes 14 months or more to schedule a half a day for a brief trial. Bond said the extra judges bring the B.C. total to 132 full-time-equivalent, with each judge and support staff costing $1.6 million a year. “The addition of nine new judges and the backlog reduction projects – and specifically the assignment of judicial resources to those projects – signal a shared understanding by all parties that changes need to be made to improve the justice system,” Bond said. Cowper noted that 98 per cent of criminal cases end with a guilty plea or a stay of proceedings, but the system treats all cases as if they are going to trial. The number of cases dropped significantly after B.C. police started imposing heavy roadside penalties for impaired driving instead of sending suspects to court. Where does your turkey come from? Wilma and Keith Watkin take pride in their products. These turkeys are some of the last birds they processed this season. Annie Gallant photo

ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter or many North Cariboo residents, choosing locally grown turkeys is the ideal, however for producers, finding accessible, affordable slaughter facilities for their birds, within a reasonable geographic area may prove to be a challenge. Wilma and Keith Watkin began their poultry slaughter operation in 2001 out of necessity. It had became clear that processing their own birds in a kitchen sink operation wasn’t going to cut it anymore. “We couldn’t find anyone to slaughter our chickens,” Wilma said. “They were primarily for ourselves but we hoped to sell enough to cover the cost of our chickens.” At the time, there were only a few areas of the province requiring plants to be inspected, but both Wilma and Keith were, even without inspectors, committed to the best possible levels of cleanliness and food safety. “We visited several operations in order to determine equipment and flow of operation, although we already knew the basics of poultry processing,” Wilma said. “We relied on a local veteran chicken expert. He was a great mentor.” And slowly, by word of mouth, other poultry producers found out and the Watkins were in business. “Those first couple of years it was basically just slaughtering for personal use,” she said. Both Wilma and Keith were still working and had limited time to devote to the operation, but the demand kept growing. A few years later, the winds of change were blowing in the province and they realized regulations were coming in that any meat sold in B.C. would have to be inspected and processed in a licensed plant. “We knew being licensed would require a major upgrade of our plant as

F

well as having inspectors present for all slaughter,” Wilma said. “We had two choices: shut our doors or apply for a license and upgrade. We decided to to go for it and were given a transitional license. This allowed us to continue operating until we met all the requirements for obtaining a licence as an inspected facility.” For Walk’In Acres, the big kicker was the lack of weekend inspections (union issue with the federally employed inspectors.) By now Keith had retired but Wilma was still working as a high school teacher and could only assist in the plant on weekends and stat holidays during the school year. In March 2007, before they made the final push to upgrade, Wilma sent a letter to the then Ministry of Healthy Living (the B.C. ministry responsible for meat inspection at the time) asking for a definitive answer on the limited inspection services. “Having no response, we went ahead with the upgrades and finally received word at the end of May – no weekend inspections,” she said. By now Walk’In Acres was processing about 6,000 chickens and 500 turkeys a season for customers from as far away as 100 Mile House and Prince George.

Since weekend inspection was not an option, they chose to continue requesting extensions to their transitional license in order to be able to offer slaughter services to their customers. However, by 2010, Wilma received a letter stating they could no longer function with a transitional Class C licence and they would have to open their 2011 season as an inspected facility. Without weekend inspection this would have reduced slaughter services to only July and August when Wilma wasn’t working. This situation was definitely not acceptable to either Keith and Wilma or their customers, so a letter-writing campaign was initiated and local MLA Bob Simpson intervened. As a result of these efforts, Walk’In Acres was granted another extension of their Class C transitonal license. “I decided to retire, which freed up time to work with the inspection time frame,” Wilma said. Now the industry faces another challenge with the federal Canadian Food Inspection Agency planning to pull out of provincial plant inspections as of December 31, 2013 and is downloading those responsibilities to the province. All provincially-licensed slaughter facilities are concerned over whether the province will then

download the cost of inspection, of which the majority is currently borne by the federal government, to the facilities. These increased costs would then be passed onto the producers and ultimately to the consumer. Meat inspection regulations and administration have recently moved to the Ministry of Agriculture, while the licensing has remained under the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. The provincial government has yet to decide what the plans are for inspection services and the funding levels after CFIA pulls out. “If the provincial government, at the time of CFIA withdrawal, chooses to download any of the costs of inspections onto plants, we will see both the producers and plants disappear because the profit margins just won’t be there. My mantra has always been producers need easily accessible and affordable slaughter for their animals in order to continue to supply locally produced meat to consumers,” Wilma said. “It takes time to build a business and we have accomplished that,” she said. In 2012, Walk’In Acres processed about 9,000 chickens and about 1,000 turkeys. But for the Watkins, who are entering their seniors years, they’re no longer prepared to operate the plant. “If local producers do not have access to an affordable slaughter facility within a reasonable geographic area, consumers will have very limited options for purchasing locally grown turkeys and chickens. There’s a great opportunity for someone to walk into an established business,” Wilma said. “We’re prepared to provide training and will ensure new owners meet all the necessary requirements to operate. The demand is there and this business will continue to grow.” Anyone interested in discussing business with Wilma and Keith can call 250-747-2757 and have a chat.

LIFESTYLES COMMUNITY LEADER

Lorraine McClelland gives all year round She learned her craft at her mother’s knee

C

rocheted Christmas tree ornaments of various sizes and descriptions and little gifts on every flat surface is the scene in Lorraine McClelland’s Quesnel home in preparation for dispatch prior to the festive season. It truly looked like she is one of Santa’s helpers as small umbrellas, tiny angels and bright coloured balls are being assembled to be sold at the craft sale to raise money for lawn bowling and for the Hospital Auxiliary’s gift shop as well as baby sweaters and baby afghans. She now has five or six afghan blankets to go to Good Cheer made out of odds and ends of wool. Lorraine cannot sit and do nothing and always has something on the go. There is the set of three patterns using filet crotchet she did for her sister Gloria on the Sunshine Coast – a real accomplishment. Between the two of them they have made 66 afghans in three years for palliative care. Last year, she gave eight afghans to Covenant House in Vancouver. In response to an ad for wool, she was most grateful for donations. Garage sales and thrift shops are also checked out for yarn. Even granny squares can be made up from bits and pieces of wool. Lorraine’s mother taught her and her sister to knit and do embroidery. She tried to teach Lorraine to tat but never got very far. On the family homestead they had pet racoons and a young moose that became quite tame. Her dad raised

mink. He would set a net in a hole in the ice on the lake for fish where she and her young brother Gordon would help. They had four milk cows and Loraine would start milking two of the cows, Midget and Cherry, when she was five years old as her dad was milking the other two. Then he finished the two she had started. The family left the homestead when Loraine was seven. It was 4.5 miles to school and Lorraine recalls that when she started riding a horse to school she had someone to ride with her. One time when her mother was ill her dad was supposed to meet her at a designated corner after school. When he wasn’t there she started riding home but her horse wanted to get to the neighbours’ horses. She fought to keep the horse on the road. Fortunately her dad came up behind and took the reins. One of her jobs was to take the cows to the lake for water and one time Gordon asked if he could come along. She had to use a stump to get on and off the horse and warned him that if he came he would have to stay on the horse because his legs were too short to get back on the horse again. However the horse slipped on the icy lake surface and went down but stayed until Gordon got off. He never asked to go to the lake again. Another time when she was 10 years old, Lorraine was put bareback on a horse that was used

to chariot racing. Her dad warned her not to let go of the reins but she didn’t heed and the horse took off. After struggling to control the horse and trying to get her to lope, Lorraine’s knees felt like rubber. She was so scared. They moved to Enderby in the Okanagan because of her mother’s health. They bought a filling station and Lorraine pumped gas before and after school as well as weekends when gas was rationed during the war. It was at that time, when Lorraine was still in school, she knit her first sweater at 15. Her dad got a job doing carpentry work on the floating bridge in Kelowna. He raised ring neck silver, platinum, and silver foxes and had a sawmill in the bush

coming home Wednesdays and weekends. Lorraine recalls squatting down and cautiously making friends with a pregnant fox. They eat their young if they suspect danger. Much later she ended up with her ring neck fox as a fur fox collar. It was about that time that she got her first guitar. Although she had never heard her dad play he showed her some of the chords. Her mother taught her to sing at an early age and she was asked to sing in church occasionally. “We used to sing when we were riding in the cutter,” she recalled. A couple of years ago Lorraine joined the Quesnel Windy Reeds. Music has been a big part of who she is throughout her life. After moving to Enderby, she participated in the Baptist church choir. She transferred with the Bank of Montreal from Penticton to Quesnel in 1976. In more recent years, many will remember Lorraine in her gift shop in a kiosk in West Park Mall for a couple of years where she took things on consignment. She worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia, signed on and sold Electrolux vacuum cleaners, doing her first sale on her birthday in April 1985. Now from her comfortable home in West Quesnel, she can quietly assess the quirky twists and turns of her life, if she takes the time, while she continues to touch a great many people’s lives in the community and elsewhere. – submitted by Ruth Scoullar

Quesnel Live Arts is offering the public a perfect way to enhance their Christmas spirit. Jesse Peters and Lizzy Hoyt, in concert Dec. 17, Chuck Mobley Theatre, present their show Strings and Swing, Our favourite Things, a Christmas-themed performance, sure to stir the spirit of the season. Peters has been a force in the Canadian music scene since 1998, before he even graduated from high school. He garnered rave reviews as a singer and songwriter from distinguished jazz artists Ingrid Jensen and the Canadian legend Diana Krall. By age 21, his group, the Peters Drury Trio had released two critically acclaimed recordings and over the years Peters has been featured in several premier Canadian magazines, on TV and in two CBC Canada live broadcasts. Peters is known for his funksoul style, had his album Love, Doubt and Soul nominated in 2009 in Western Canadian Music Awards, was named for one of 2009 top pick albums and his newest recording, Face Time, is also making waves in the music industry. With a vocally-driven mix of original and standard tunes, this album is filled with energy, innovation, scope and range. Retro, classic and recorded live-off-the-floor at Edmonton’s

Winspear Centre, Face Time is a tribute to Peters’ many influences. In concert with Peters, Lizzy Hoyt brings her energetic and rhythmic fiddling of the Maritimes and blends it with her country-folk songs from the west. A gifted vocalist and musician, Hoyt’s music has been recognized at both the national and international level. The real meaning of

Christmas C

an you appreciate this cartoon of Dennis the Menace? He rushes into the room, with his mother standing there with her mouth open and he says, holding a big box in his hand, “We’d better tell Santa Claus to forget about the train set I asked for. I just found one on the top shelf of Dad’s closet!” A recent survey indicated that more people are bothered by the commercialization of Christmas than by the display of religious symbols in public places. The Tim Hall commercialization of Victory Way Church Christmas is part of our society in which consumption for its own sake – regardless of need – is legitimized and encouraged. Without reluctance, advertisers tap into peoples’ religious beliefs and deep emotions at the same time we are being persuaded to buy. Talk about exploitation. While it may be good for the economy in the short run, commercialized Christmas also has its costs. For example, many people experience depression when Christmas does not deliver the happiness that advertising hype promises. And what about that nagging feeling of ‘being used’ as a willing participant in the annual holiday cash-cow? After we have scurried around like the well-trained consumers we are, we’re left feeling exhausted and in debt, promising ourselves next year we will exit this freeway and take a slower pace. What does all of this do to your heart? All of it robs Christmas of its power to renew the human spirit. Perhaps the greatest cost of commercialization at Christmas is paid by the poor. In our society, the poor experience Christmas as a cruel hoax. The creed of Santa Claus theology is the well-known song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town. According to this creed, Santa is omniscient; like God, Santa knows all about us. There is also a day of judgment. It comes once a year when “good” children are rewarded with good things, while the “bad” (i.e., the poor) get nothing. The truth is, of course, that gifts are not distributed based on who has been “good or bad” or “naughty or nice,” but on what people can afford or get credit to buy. The damaging message is, volume and quality of gifts at Christmastime determines your worth. True Christmas is the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The gospel of Luke records the announcement of Jesus birth to shepherds by angels: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people...” Jesus is God’s (Christmas) gift to everyone. Whether rich or poor, naughty or nice. This Christmastime unwrap some salvation, receive joy, get off the freeway and be at peace. Tim Hall is pastor of Quesnel’s Victory Way Church.

Atom Thunder hits the road Thunder finishes mid-pack in Merritt tournament on weekend JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The atom Thunder got their first chance to take their game on the road last weekend, heading down to Merritt to test their mettle against southern teams. The Quesnel team ended up fourth out of eight teams, coming out of the weekend with a 1-3-1 record. ”It was great for us to see some of the teams from the Lower Mainland and Okanagan and see that we can compete with them," Gord Salmon, the team's coach, said. The excitement over the team's first road trip bubbled pretty high in the team's first game against Chilliwack. All of that nervous energy, plus the long travel before their first game caused the team to not quite meet their own standards of play, Salmon said. Michael Greenwood does his best to get by defenders. Despite this, the team was able to Contributed photo keep up with the Chilliwack team, clinching a 10-10 tie. Salmon said. Rumblings from Bouchie Lake JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Bouchie Lake Hall will be the setting for another Rumble. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2 Rivers Boxing Club will clash with boxers from across B.C. and even a couple Albertans. Nothing is set in stone yet, but nine fighters from the club are looking forward to matches, with some out-of-towner bouts to round out the card. Three neophytes are tentatively on the card; Dan Mott prepares for the Dec. 15 RumErin Dale, Zayd Jalifi ble in Bouchie Lake. Jonas Gagnon photo

and Devon Star will all step into the ring for the first time. The new boxers are excited and nervous for their first bouts, while Wally Doern, the gym’s coach, is excited to watch them test their mettle. “Some (first-timers) are focused and use their training and others, for their first bout, they’ll end up almost forgetting everything they learned because they’re over eager,” Doern said. “It’s a learning experience.” The more experienced boxers are excited to get back in the ring.

Dan (Mayhem) Mott is looking to avenge himself on Randall Graham, while Kyle (The Motor) Tessier looks to keep his 3-0 record clean. Both boxers have upped their training, with both Mott and Tessier working hard on their cardio to make sure they don’t run out of gas in the middle of the match. Doors open for the event at 6 p.m. with bouts beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, while reserved ringside (sponsored) seats are available direct from Doern, at 250-991-5061.

By the end of the game the gap had grown, ending with Merritt taking the game 13-3. The Thunder's record, with a win, a lose and a tie, was good enough for second in their pool, which pitted them against North Vancouver A2 in the semi-finals. "The game was back and forth the whole way," Salmon said. The back and forth of the game was hampered by four disallowed goals. Despite the setbacks, the team continued to push, Salmon said. Unfortunately, the Thunder couldn't come back from the disallowed goals, falling to the North Vancouver teams 10-7. Their loss pushed the team into the bronze medal battle against Abbottsford. "This was probably the best game of the weekend for us," Salmon said. "It was back and forth with solid goaltending for each team." The Thunder racked up a lot of chances, but didn't capitalize enough, thus falling to Abbottsford 5-3, to take fourth. "It’s good to win and lose as a team and hopefully we all learned something this weekend that will help us down the road," Salmon summed it up.

Representing Kelowna? JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Despite what you may have read, UFC headliner Rory McDonald is not from Kelowna, but a local boy. This Saturday, MacDonald takes on (The Prodigy) BJ Penn in Seattle. The odds makers are on the side of the Canadian this time, at almost a 3-1 favourite. This will be MacDonald’s sixth time in the octagon for the UFC, with ontly a single loss to his name. MacDonald came to MMA at 14, taking part in his first professional bout at 16, which his parents had to sign a waiver for, before moving to Montreal to continue his training. Passing the passion JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

The curling club opened wide its doors to welcome scores of rugrats last Saturday. The Optimus Kids Curling Camp was the first of its kind to happen in Quesnel, inviting nine to 12 year-olds out on the ice to get a taste of curling, some for the first time in their lives. A total of 32 children attended the event, which was the second best turnout for the provinciallywide held camp. "You always want better numbers, but when he told me we were the second highest camp I was pretty happy," Dave Plant, manager of the curling rink, said. Plant said around 70 per cent of the children who came out had never been on a curling sheet before, with the other 30 per cent having been around curling, but not regularly. Action started on the sheets at 10 a.m. and went through to 3 p.m. with a stop for a spaghetti lunch around noon. The lunch and snacks were provided courtesy of Cariboo Pulp and Paper.

The introduction to curling added to the number of young curlers in the city, with some of the attendees showing interest in participating in youth curling activities. It was the first such camp for the region, but with the positive feedback Plant received, he hopes to hold one next year as well, though holding it earlier in the season so new curlers can enjoy a whole curling season if they want to enjoy, instead of the half they can take part in this year. Because of how late the camp was, new curlers from this year's camp will join come the new year. The Youth Curling Jam Can, ages 7 to eleven, and the Junior Curlers, ages twelve and up, are midway through their 13 week season, which will break for Christmas, allowing new curlers to join for the six weeks left after Christmas. The young curlers play Wed. 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. for the young ones and Sat. 3:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. for the junior players. Anyone interested in taking part can call the curling rink at 250992-5813.

Cariboo Critters Christmas

The bears learn the bad news from the North Pole This is the fourth installment of the Cariboo Observer’s Cariboo Critters Christmas. Watch for the continuing story.

T

he animals all sat, mouths wide open, staring transfixed at the moose. The question was plain in their eyes: what would happen to Christmas this year? Though none could force the question from their mouths, they hoped he would have some good news at the end of the tale, but instead, he just stopped. And the animals kept staring. Then a couple started to sputter, but most of them kept staring, the question growing in their eyes, but not yet able to make it to their mouths. Then it came. “Will we have Christmas?” cried all the

animals in crafty fox voices and squeaky mouse voices and everything in between. And the moose shrugged and said, “That’s all the news that’s made it this far south.” And with that announcement the enigmatic moose moved off into the snow covered pines, out of reach of the light and off into the night. The quiet continued for a while, as the animals sat stunned at the news. Then, all of the sudden, conversation exploded in the clearing. “What’s going to happen?” cried a young deer, setting off an avalanche in a nearby mountain, which was dwarfed by the thunderous voices of the animals. “What about presents?” “What’ll we do?” “Is there anything we can do to help?” “What about Christ-

mas?” All these questions and more resounded through the trees until they found the cave of a bear family. At first Momma and Poppa Bear didn’t wake up, but the young bears, dreaming of Santa and Christmas were susceptible to the words finding cracks in the soft walls of sleep, making their way into the cuddly little bears dreams, which woke them in tears. And Momma Bear, always perceptive when it comes to her baby bears, woke up to the not-sosoft sounds of the children’s crying. All through which the Poppa Bear was able to sleep. Well, until Momma Bear, annoyed with the cacophony of snoring and crying, shook Poppa bear awake. And Poppa bear doesn’t like getting woken up.

“What is it?” Poppa bear asked in his most rumbly, gravelly, scary voice. And the Baby bears, now even more scared blubbered on about there being no Christmas this year. Poppa Bear, now more awake, heard the tear-stain sound of his children’s fears and the wailing outside, went out to put an end to the infernal noise. He found the animals huddled in the clearing and roared, “enough,” at them. And they all stopped, except for the young ones who continued to cry. “What’s happening here?” And they all tried to explain at once. Then they all stopped. Then they all started to try to explain at once again. And Poppa bear pointed at a fox and yelled at him, “you tell me.”

But the fox, to terrified now to say anything just shivered. So a deer, gathering up his courage, said to Poppa Bear, “There’s something wrong at the North Pole.” “Where did you hear that?” Poppa Bear asked. “One of the moose told us a story he heard from some moose further north, who heard it from some moose even further north, who heard it from a reindeer, that the magic at the North Pole is going all wonky.” “Wonky?” “Yeah, Santa’s not getting all his letters and the sleigh’s not going fast enough and the elves still have to put independent rear suspension on it.” “Rear suspension?” And that was all the deer could manage and he began to wail again, “there won’t be a Christmas.” Which set the rest of the

animals to again begin wailing. So Poppa Bear, suffering from the loud noises after the silence of his sleeping cave, put his paws to his ears and shuffled back to the cave to try and comfort his wife and his kids, because Christmas just might not be coming this year. A single grizzly-sized tear crept from his eye and down the side of his nose. “What am I going to tell my kids? he asked himself. And the rumour grew as it fanned out through the area, getting wilder and wilder until a week later every animal in the forest was absolutely certain there would be no Christmas to warm up the winter this year. Check back in the Observer for the next installment.
