One of the completed “Horsing Around Langley” horse statues was unveiled last week at Thunderfoot Studio. Studio owner and artist Vivian Harder was commissioned by the Township of Langley to paint one of seven life-size fiberglass horses, with a theme of scenes from rural Langley.

Her original design has farms, flowers, vineyards, hot air balloons, cyclists, trees, river activity, and more, which are all wrapped together by ribbons. The ribbons, explains Harder, symbolize the often-weaving roads of rural Langley.

“They are ribbons of roadways, and I was really pleased that they also let me paint the ‘rainbow’ mane and tail on my horse, as I

had submitted in my drawings,” said Harder.

The Horsing Around Langley project is the brainchild of Carla Robin, who helped win a provincial cultural grant in connection with the B.C. Summer Games hosted by Langley last year.

Langley Township council gave tentative approval to a $250,000 study of traffic on busy 16 Avenue Monday afternoon, adding it to a list of possible projects to be funded by the 2013 budget.

A report by Township transportation engineering manager Paul Cordeiro called for a comprehensive study involving Abbotsford, Surrey, and other stakeholders including the RCMP, ICBC, Canadian Border Services Agency and the provincial government to set out short, medium and long-term options.

The Cordeiro report said with further modifications, the two-lane route will be able to handle projected increases in traffic for the next 15 to 20 years but eventually it will have to be widened to four lanes, something that will cost around $200 million for the Langley section of the route alone.

Councillor David Davis said the study should also examine Zero Avenue as an alternative east/west link.

“Rural south Langley will change (if 16 Avenue is widened),” Davis said.

“It’s going to be a freeway.”

Councillor Grant Ward said the study will hurry up work on widening the road, a notion Councillor Bob Long questioned.

“I’ve never seen a study hurry anything up,” Long said.

Long was the only member present at the Monday meeting to vote against the study (Councillor Michelle Sparrow was absent).

The Cordeiro report said 16 Avenue currently meets safety standards and “it is difficult to determine what improvements could be implemented that would influence driver behavior and reduce the number of collisions.”

The Township has spent $2.8 million on 16 Avenue improvements since 2000, mostly on adding left-turn bays and traffic signals. More work is planned.

Surrey and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure recently approved preliminary design work on an interchange at the 16 Avenue-Highway 99 overpass that would allow border traffic to head east toward a Surrey industrial park and the Abbotsford International Airport.

seven horse ‘blanks’ which were then sold for $10,000 apiece to sponsors,” said Harder.

Artists were then invited to submit their ideas for painting the horse blanks, which were juried. Harder’s submission was accepted and matched with the Township’s Rural Langley project.

“The only thing they changed was the bridge in my drawing, because that wasn’t rural enough,” said Harder.

Harder, who also contributed to the colourful map on the wall of Langley Tourism, didn’t want to mimic the grid style of the tourism map on the horse, so she came up with the idea of using ribbons to symbolize the roads.

Harder estimates that she has put in 200 hours over six weeks to paint her horse, and receives a small honorarium for her work, but most of the money goes to the arts council.

As for the horse’s installation in the community, Harder says she doesn’t know its ultimate destination, but it, along with the other six horses, will be put on display at Willowbrook Mall in January and February.

“They will all be clear-coated for outdoor display, and mounted on bases for their installations.”

Harder graduated from University of the Fraser Valley’s graphic arts program in 1992, but says she found the computer-based work of designing logos and the like too limiting. Over recent years she has concentrated more on her vivid paintings — often of horses, “funky cats” and other creatures and landscapes — at her home-based studio.

Harder lives on a small farm in rural Langley with her husband and many beloved animals. She belongs to the Backcountry Horsemen of B.C. and the Vintage Riders Equestrian Club. She is an enthu-

siastic member of the Fort Langley Artist’s Group, as well as co-founder and organizer of the popular Langley Art Studio Tour. Her work has been featured in many gallery shows and festivals and her paintings are enjoyed in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and the U.K. As Harder says: “I can look out at my back fields on a rainy day and where other people might just see a dull grey scene, I see deep cool blues, warm glowing yellows and glorious mauve-shaded clouds set against a slightly shimmering sky. I feel compelled to paint what I so vividly see in my imagination, playing off what is real and then dramatizing it with brilliant color, swaying movement, and impressionistic lighting.”

Volunteers help Connor family rebuild their home

The Connor family’s property on Downes Road in Abbotsford was a flurry of activity on Wednesday morning.

Outside, Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker was operating an excavator to clear the site of garbage and move around old cars that would later be taken to the scrapyard.

His fellow officers and other volunteers were manually cleaning up the property, moving items into the dumpster in the front yard.

Inside the home, destroyed by a chimney fire on Nov. 11, members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service were clearing out the rubble to prepare the home for rebuilding.

In all, more than 20 police officers, firefighters and members of the public gathered at the site for the first day of a massive volunteer effort that will see Ann and Bill Connor in a new home before Christmas.

The couple, both in their 80s, had no insurance when

their home was destroyed. Bill has lived on the property since he was two years old.

Everything required to rebuild their home – including building supplies, appliances, furniture, cabinets, sinks and all the labour – has been donated.

Last weekend, the Abbotsford Firefighters Charitable Society and the Abbotsford Police Union announced they would coordinate all the offers that were pouring in from the community and beyond.

Sgt. Judy Dizy and her husband, firefighter Craig Bird, agreed to head the efforts, and both were on site on Wednesday.

Bird said that within 72 hours of the two organizations announcing their plans to help the Connors, donations had come in to cover all that was needed.

“Everything has been taken care of. We don’t need anything else. This is truly a community effort,” he said.

Bird said the rebuild will be completed without touching

the trust fund that friends set up for the Connors.

Dizy said she has been moved by the generosity.

“It’s very emotional …

Numerous police officers and firefighters are skilled tradespeople and are volunteering their time off work to assist with things such as electrical work, plumbing and drywalling.

Among them are Const.

Walker and Const. Phil Sawatsky. Both were on site Wednesday, after having finished a night shift with the Abbotsford Police Department.

“Nobody wishes this on anybody,” Walker said of the fire and why he wanted to help. “I wouldn’t want my parents to go through this.”

Bill Connor and his son John were also at the scene, and said they were touched and grateful that people would do so much for them.

Pipeline meeting draws crowd gallons of diluted bitumen into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River.

The cleanup and health impacts raised questions about B.C.’s ability to respond to a similar disaster.

Kinder Morgan wants to build a second pipeline from Alberta through B.C. to a shipping port in Burnaby. It would increase daily capacity to 750,000 barrels from the current 300,000 barrels.

“It’s a 60-year-old pipeline that has diluted bitumen running through it. They want to run 750,000 barrels per day through those lines.

“It’s scary to think of,” said Harper. He said the Huntingdon aquifer, several waterways and a bird sanctuary in Langley are all on the pipeline route.

“When they put in this pipeline 60 years ago, this was all farmland,” said Major. She taught at an elementary school that has a pipeline running right through the playground there.

“They don’t even have a definite plan for the second line so we are very worried. Now they are dealing with running a new pipeline through heavily populated areas,” she said.

Inside the meeting, several land owners wanted to be re-assured that Kinder Morgan can’t just go on their property and start digging to put in a new pipe.

According to Kinder Morgan, a total of 52 people — many of whom are property owners — turned out to at an open house for the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion held at Walnut Grove Secondary on Thursday night.

Many people don’t realize that 17 kilometres of pipeline already runs through Langley, right through many urban neighbourhoods in Walnut Grove. Kinder Morgan is proposing to twin that pipeline and double the amount of oil pumped through those lines.

Several citizens with a new group called Pipe Up Network, who are opposed to the expansion project, set up an information booth outside the meeting on Thursday.

“A lot of residents we have talked to were shocked to know that a pipeline already runs through Langley,” said local resident Kevin Harper who joined Pipe Up Network, a group of concerned citizens from Burnaby to Hope.

Wendy Major, a retired school teacher in Chilliwack, said a bitumen spill in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 2010 “caused health problems for the people and devastated local business.”

That pipeline, owned by Enbridge Energy Partners, reportedly spilled an estimated 843,000

(TransMountain) were on hand at the meeting, wearing visible green jackets, ready to answer questions.

But one question they couldn’t answer is what the exact route of the twin pipeline will be.

There is a routing team in place trying to determine a corridor for the new pipes to be put in. The map of that new line will start a new round of public meetings.

MORE OIL MEANS MORE TANKERS Currently, of the many deep draft vessels coming into Vancouver harbour each month, only eight are oil tankers.

If the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion gets approved, that number will increase to around 25 oil tankers. If approved, the pipeline could start operating in 2017.

Kinder Morgan runs a total of 17 km of pipeline through Langley, starting in the Port Kells industrial area, heading east through urban areas of Walnut Grove, through Yorkson Creek, across Belmont Golf Course and across the Salmon River, cutting through West Creek Watershed, along the nature reserve at Ponder Park, into the hills above Glen Valley and into rural areas past Nathan Creek.

B.C.’s toughened roadside penalties on drinking drivers are being credited for cutting alcohol-related crash deaths for a second straight year.

The province estimates 104 lives have been saved since the immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) system took effect in September 2010.

That’s based on a drop from an average of 114 impaired fatalities prior to the new rules to 66 in the first full year of the IRP program and 58 in the second year.

Provincial government officials say the initiative has drastically changed British Columbian attitudes to drinking and getting behind the wheel.

“As you drive home late at night, the car coming toward you is far less

likely to be piloted by an impaired driver than at any time in recent years,” Justice Minister Shirley Bond said.

She said B.C. is so far averaging a 46 per cent drop in drunk driving fatalities – better than a target of 35 per cent set in 2010 in honour of impaired driving victim Alexa Middelaer. The roadside penalties can result in licence suspensions, vehicle impoundments and can cost driv-

ers $600 to $4,000 in administrative penalties and remedial program costs.

The new approach has also meant a major shift away from criminal prosecution of suspected impaired drivers, which consumes much police investigation and court time.

A June survey of drivers in five communities (Vancouver, Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George and Saanich) found the

lowest levels of drinking and driving ever recorded in a series of similar surveys dating back to 1995.

Nearly 60 per cent fewer drivers who agreed to be tested for the survey were at or over the 0.08 criminal blood-alcohol level than in past years, and there was a 44 per cent drop in those who tested in the warn range above 0.05.

Drivers aged 25 to 54 were most likely to say their behaviour has changed due to the new sanctions and those under 25 were most likely to say they never drink and drive.

The tests found no drivers aged 16 to 18 who had been drinking, which is thought to be a benefit of B.C.’s graduated licensing system that restricts novice and learners to a zero blood alcohol content.

Extreme weather shelter opens in Langley

A forecast of five days or more of straight rain has resulted in an emergency homeless shelter being set up at the Gateway of Hope.

VICTORIA – B.C.’s ritual day of shame over child poverty has come and gone once again, with politicians trading blame and time-worn talking points.

The occasion was an annual gathering staged at the B.C. Teachers’ Federation office in downtown Vancouver. It is organized by First Call, an umbrella group sponsored by the BCTF, the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and a collection of likeminded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report.

The familiar script unfolded. The report misinterprets federal income statistics from two years ago and calls for a long list of un-costed, but hugely expensive measures that they assert will make B.C. the first jurisdiction in human history to eradicate poverty.

A sampling: provide raises for employees and contractors at all levels of government until they are making an unspecified “living wage,” because we all know how public sector workers uniquely suffer from pay and pension inequality.

Raise the minimum wage again and index it to inflation.

Establish universal public dental care, prescription drug and eye care programs, and daycare. (Dismiss targeted programs that already provide this.)

Raise welfare rates and expand eligibility for employment insurance. Cut tuition and provide more student grants. Eliminate homeless-

And so it continues toward a socialist Utopia and certain bankruptcy for provincial and federal governments already deeply in the red.

I wrote about these numbers when Statistics Canada released them back in June.

They showed a modest improvement nationally and provincially in what they measure, which is not poverty, but the relative relationship between income groups. First Call dismisses that improvement as “a dismal record.”

My point is not to deny that there are many poor people in B.C. and Canada.

There are. But at this point we don’t even have a reliable way of measuring the problem, let alone effective solutions.

The report states: “Statistics Canada said the child poverty rate in Greater Vancouver was 18.4 per cent in 2010 …” No, Statistics Canada didn’t say that. They said what they always say, that “Low-Income Cut-Off,” or LICO figures, are not an accurate measure of poverty.

The political response was equally predictable. Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP. Davies didn’t mention that Manitoba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of children living in low-

income homes. These plans are mainly gesture politics, providing the appearance of action.

Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux spoke on behalf of the B.C. Liberal government, and she, too, stuck to a familiar script.

The best path out of poverty is a job, she said. This is true, but also obvious.

Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own sorry record of misrepresented federal statistics.

Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious section headings: “Child poverty concentrated in big cities.” No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities.

Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for everlarger government. Poor people are increasingly crowded into the most expensive places.

If I’m on welfare or working in a low-wage job and receiving a provincial rent subsidy (one of those things LICO doesn’t measure), should I live in downtown Victoria or Vancouver?

Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller community where housing is cheaper?

There are lots of complications to this, but some kind of incentive to relocate could help big and small communities.

Langley Township council has approved a new formula that will calculate their pay raises based on the salaries of senior police, provincial judges, federal and provincial politicians and Langley school distract school principals, an approach that would raise their pay 3.3 per cent and pay them a travel allowance for the first time.

However, it has yet to decide when the new system will take effect. Council voted to implement the revised formula during their Monday afternoon (Nov. 26) meeting.

It is based on a report by a five-member council remuneration task force set up to conduct an independent review in the wake of the controversy over the last pay hike in December that boosted Mayor Jack Froese’s annual salary by 12.6 per cent and councillor pay rates by 19 percent.

Froese called on council to adopt the recommendations from task force members Deanna Horn, Darcy Rezac, Barbara Sharp, Andrea Soberg and Bob Wilson.

“This is not an easy task” Froese said.

“Nobody likes to vote on their own pay increase.”

The new formula was adopted over the objection of councillor Kim Richter, who called the suggested increase “outrageous” at a time when most taxpayers aren’t getting pay raises.

“This just adds insult to their injury,” Richter said. “(A council hike of) 3.3 per cent on top of a 19 per cent increase is just not going to be palatable to taxpayers,” Richter said. Richter said if the new $850 a month travel allowance for the mayor and the new $340 a month travel allowance for councillors is included in the calculations, the compensation increase is considerably bigger than the reported 3.3 per cent.

She said it works out to a 14.4 per cent pay hike for the mayor while councillors get a 12.4 per cent boost.

Councillors Charlie Fox and Bob Long joined Richter in voting against the proposal. Long wanted more time to consider the recommendations while Fox wanted implementation of the new formula postponed until after the next municipal election, something the task force opposed.

“If you delay three years, it’s going to be a big increase,” task force member Darcy Rezac told council, urging them to implement the pay hikes this January. “Our view is very strongly that you implement this immediately.”

As the evening council meeting was wrapping up, Fox tried once again to get council to delay implementing the pay raises until after the next election. Instead, council decided to do what Long wanted, and defer the whole matter until their next meeting on Dec. 3, when the absent councillor Michelle Sparrow would be present to vote.

Grant Ward served notice that he is against a delay that would mean a bigger catch-up pay hike post-election. “There’s going to be a lot of howls (if we do that),” Ward predicted.

David Davis appeared to be leaning towards postponing the hikes until after the next election, saying “I just don’t feel I should give myself a raise” The new formula does away with the practice of basing council salaries on the increases approved by other Lower Mainland municipal councils, a practice critics have said leads all too easily into a round-robin of accelerating pay hikes.

Instead, the new formula uses an average of the salaries of a federal MP, provincial MLA, provincial government cabinet minister, Langley RCMP superintendent and the principal of the largest high school in Langley. Task force chair Barbara Sharp said they decided against using an average of private sector salaries because “the comparators would have gone through the roof.”

A provincial court judge makes $231,138, followed by an MP at $157,731, a provincial cabinet minister at $137,509, RCMP superintendent at $135,145, Langley school district high school principal at $121,890 and provincial MLA at $101,859.

The committee threw out the highest and lowest salaries and averaged out the ones in the middle to produce a figure of $138,086, then calculated the mayor’s pay rate at 80 per cent of the average and the councillors pay at 40 per cent.

The end result was a recommended raise of the mayors salary from $105,456 to $110,454. The travel allowance will add another $10,200 to bring the mayor’s total compensation package to $120,654. Councillors pay will rise from $42,936 to $44,181 and their travel allowance will add another $4,080 to bring the total to $48,261. According to the task force’s own estimates, the average residential taxpayer in the Township of Langley will pay $9 a year to cover an annual council salary tab of $547,263, an increase of one dollar.

A season to reflect on loved ones Say ‘no!’

Editor: As we near the upcoming holiday season, we reflect on this festive time of sharing and goodwill with family and friends coming together to celebrate.

Sadly, that is not true for many of us who have experienced the death of a loved one. It can be a lonely, sad and overwhelming time to go through the holiday season without our special person.

The Langley Hospice Society appreciates this and provides opportunities to take a moment in time to pause and remember. We are hosting Journey Through the Holidays, a memorial evening of inspiration, candle lighting and friendship. Please join us in commemorating our loved ones who have died as well as acknowledging

the grief journey that family and friends are going through as they move forward to a new year of hope.

This year Journey Through the Holidays is being held on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Is $17.5 million for a new YMCA a wise investment?

Editor: Have we missed something? In era of fiscal restraint where Mayor Banman has said civic spending is about needs versus wants, now there’s a call to spend $17.5 million for the YMCA. The YMCA has had a great record of providing for communities around the world and if the City of Abbotsford could afford to give them the money, it would be a great asset.

However, we can’t afford it right now.

City staff have been very clear that to have the YMCA come to Abbotsford now means the roads, buildings,

and other infrastructure we presently own will not be maintained to current standards.

And what about this $17.5 million?

The Mayor goes on that this is “50¢ dollars”. What rubbish! It is about our elected officials giving money to the YMCA without us owning a thing. Would you give your neighbour $500,000 to build a new house?

Doubtful at best.

What happens if the YMCA runs at a loss? Will they then ask the City for a top-up to keep their operations going? Meanwhile, would recreation services at the ARC and MRC be cut?

And suppose the YMCA pulls the plug on the project and sells the building. What would happen to the taxpayers $17.5 million investment? Would we get it back or would the YMCA leave town with a nice amount as a donation from the taxpayers?

So let’s go back to planning our budget based upon needs. Let’s invest in our existing recreation centres. Let’s maintain our roads. Let’s focus on keeping our current buildings being well maintained. And let’s put this dream for another white elephant aside.

Editor: Assisted suicide should not be legal because older people are at great risk for abuse.

In my experience as a licensed practical nurse working with older people in home care, I have come across many situations.

I have seen firsthand a family fighting over the will of their parents while they were still alive.

I see this greatly affects the way parents feels as they grow older. They feel as if the family wants them to die so they can have their money.

Some express the pain that they feel when they see loved ones discussing their money as if they have already passed away.

If assisted suicide was legal, some older people would feel the need to say yes to dying because they would be given the message they are a burden to their family.

Some of these older people can be easily convinced and put their trust fully in their caregivers and families.

If assisted suicide were legal, some would really not make the decision, but let someone else make the decision for them.

How is this right?

Queen’s medals go to 30 Langley residents Aldergrove Star

Thirty Langley citizens received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal at a formal ceremony on Saturday morning.

The awards are being given to 60,000 Canadians in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s reign. While the number sounds large, MP Mark Warawa noted that these 60,000 are out of a total group of 34 million Canadians.

“The Queen has devoted her entire life to the service of others,” Warawa said.

Warawa was able to recommend 30 people for the medal, and asked a committee of three to help him with the choices. On the panel were Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce executive director Lynn

Have we become a society that is too busy for gift wrap? When a birthday arrives or the holidays

Here are some reasons to save the gift bag for another time.

• Wrapping can be green, too. Wrapping paper can be reused if it is carefully removed from a gift.

You also can create your own wrapping paper by decorating brown postal paper with a rubber stamp or having children color their own special murals.

Don’t overlook newsprint as wrapping as well.

• Paper is more cost-effective. You are bound to get more bang for your wrapping buck by choosing wrapping paper. Although there are scores of discount stores that sell low-priced gift bags, often the quality isn’t the same, and the handles could tear after one or two uses. Wrapping paper per inch is definitely more affordable than gift bags, particularly when purchased on sale.

• Wrapping paper lets you be creative. Cover a box with a patchwork of different paper scraps, choose to stagger colors of paper with boxes towered one on top of another or tie on the biggest bow you can find.

• Paper is traditional. Look back to the classic stories of yuletide and you are bound to find images of Santa Claus pulling wrapped boxes out of his enormous gift sack. Also think about how

Although it may take mere minutes to pry away the paper and find a treasure inside, there’s something to be said for paper-wrapped

• Wrapped gifts travel better. When carrying your bounty of gifts to friends and family, carefully wrapped boxes tend to stand up to travel better than gift bags. • There’s something magical about wrapping paper. The anticipation, the drama, the build-up to peeling aside wrapping paper and revealing the gift has brought smiles to children’s (and adults’) faces for generations. It is hard to improve on something that has been successful for years and years.

Although the public may be swept up in rushing from here to there, there are traditionalists who appreciate sitting down and spending time creating holiday magic by way of beautifully wrapped gifts.

Aldergrove Totems make local soccer history Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Secondary Totems senior soccer boys made some local history when took on some of B.C.’s strongest competition at the provincial championships this past week in Burnaby.

The team didn’t make the championship podium but were satisfied with well-played games and a final win in the school’s first-ever foray to the AA B.C. Soccer Championships.

Game one on Monday, Nov. 19, was a 4-2 loss to Sentinel of Vancouver. The boys struggled to get their groove physically and mentally as the team arrived five minutes before kick-off, due to some scheduling mixups.

“To their credit they never quit even when they went down 4-0 at one point,” said coach Brian Hunter, adding that he was “very proud of how they responded and battled back to make it 4-2. If there had been more time they could have equaled their opposition.”

Game two looked like it would be a win as they took a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by the LV Rogers (Nelson) goaltender and showed composure in a very physical match.

However, as the game was closing out, injuries started to take their toll and the Nelson team kept attacking and were finally rewarded for their efforts by tying the game with about seven minutes to go.

“A bit of heartbreak for the moment but as the team has done all season, they were very positive with one another and looked to regroup,” said Hunter.

Okanagan Mission, and played one of their best games in the tournament.

The Totems lost a squeaker, 1-0, while coming very close to tying the game on two successive plays late in the game only to be stymied by great goaltending plays.

The loss placed Aldergrove in a tie for third place with LV Rogers, who they had tied the previous day 1-1.

In an interesting ruling, the teams were considered tied even though the Aldergrove team had a a better goals difference, fewer goals allowed and scored more goals than their competitors from Nelson.

So the boys were dragged out of the showers and up onto the playing pitch to compete in a shootout to

determine who would be placed third and who would be placed fourth in the group standings. The Totems lost 5-4 on shots as the LV Rogers keeper made a save on the fifth shot.

Aldergroves fourth game of the tourney was against Carihi High from Campbell River. Again Aldergrove played a very good game but the ball was not going in the net. Posts, crossbars, and some timely goaltending provided the difference as Carihi High Tyees notched one tally to take the game, 1-0.

Wednesday, the last day of the tournament, had Aldergrove matched up against DP Todd of Prince George. The Totems opened the game with a very fast pace and caught

the northerners off guard with a quick attack that resulted in a goal for the local squad.

The game settled in, with the teams exchanging attacking forays only to be shut down with good defending. Then Aldergrove started to take the flow of the game but it looked like it was going to be deja vu with the goal scoring problems. In one five minute segment the Totems hit two goal posts a cross bar and the goalie made a great diving save. Not letting up the pressure Aldergrove

was finally rewarded with three unanswered goals to eventually take the game 4-0.

The team then gathered to hold a small team awards recognizing players they felt deserved recognition for their efforts throughout the season.

In a players’ vote, the five players honoured by their peers were Joel Waterman, Wes Lockhart, Victor Andrade, Adam Schonewille and Brad Wightman. Gurmaan Jhaj was given the Commissioners Sixteen Award, which is given to the team’s tournament MVP for each participating team.

The team also consisted of Gurshaan Jhaj, Tanner Cummisky, Josh Power, Pietro Romegoli, Darrien Kristensen, Jonah Miller, Jaskran Brar, Alex Snowdon, Will Sitter, Ryota Shiono and Kyle Brewer.

“Special thanks go out to all the families that braved the weather and traffic over the new bridge to support the team in this competition and the season, the school administration and staff for their great support of the team throughout, and the community soccer coaches who spend countless hours volunteering to develop such fine young people on and off the field,” said Hunter.

“The players were fantastic ambassadors for the school and community and were honoured at the closing ceremonies by being presented the Fair Play Award. The award was selected through the panel of referees, opposing coaches and tournament executives.”

Kodiaks rustle up points on Outlaws

The Aldergrove Kodiaks overcame a lacklustre start on Wecnesday, Nov. 21 to ride to a 2-0 blanking of the visiting Mission City Outlaws.

The game finally livened up in the second half of the second period when the Kodiaks scored a pair of back-toback goals.

First to score was a brilliant shot from Stefan Gonzales, a defender who has proven to be a major asset for the Kodiaks this season. His slap into the corner of the net at 13:36 was assisted

by Scott McHaffie and his twin brother Spencer McHaffie.

Twenty-three seconds later Spencer McHaffie netted another, assisted by Scott McHaffie and Ryan Veillet.

The game was low on penalties, with neither team scoring on their power plays, three for Mission and two for Aldergrove.

Kodiaks keeper Mark Menicucci earned first star for the shutout, with second star to Gonzales and third to Spencer McHaffie.

Kodiaks outshot the Outlaws 39-34.

The Kodiaks stand at 21 points after 21 games (10-10-1-0), five points back of conference leaders Abbotsford Pilots.

The Pilots visit Aldergrove, Wednesday, Nov. 28, puck drop 7:15 p.m.

For the first time an all-star Canadian cast of figure skaters are bringing a Christmas production to the Langley Events Centre, and fans have responded enthusiastically.

The Holiday Festival on Ice comes to the 4,000-seat arena this Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. and spokesman Jared Harman says public interest has been great and “tickets are selling really well. The 90 minute holiday-themed show on the ice promises to be one of the most unique and anticipated events to come to the facility since its opening in 2009.”

With a line-up headlined by champions Kurt Browning, Joannie Rochette and Elvis Stojko, as well as Jeffrey Buttle, Shawn Sawyer, and Sinead and John Kerr, and rising star Kaetlyn Osmond, figure skating fans will be getting a variety of programs that highlight their individual styles and characters.

One of the stars, Elvis Stojko called on Monday from his home in Mexico, Ajijic, to talk about the upcoming Holiday Festival on Ice show. Stojko and his wife, Mexican figure skater Gladys Orozco, have made their home there in a gated community near Guadalajara.

“There’s an arena nearby to rehearse in, in the main city, that my wife andy I can go and

“I’m busy racing gokarts in Canada and in Mexico. It’s the next venture I’m going to be going into. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid and now I get a chance to do it. We have a really good track here for go-karting and the shifter karts we use are basically what the F1 guys train on, on the off-season; they’re fast and you learn a lot.

However, now aged 40, Stojko says he’s careful with his body and tries to stay injury-free.

“I don’t even think about those things, I just go out and enjoy myself and stay balanced — don’t go out when I’m tired, only when I have energy and am feeling good. You’ve really got to think responsibly and go by the way your body feels, go with the flow,” says Stojko.
