LOUIS RIEL DAY CELEBRATION

Major gym repairs almost complete Fruitvale Elementary School gymnasium expected to be ready in time for the holiday season BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

The students of Fruitvale Elementary School are getting an early Christmas treat. Just in time for the holidays, the students will be singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” in the warmth of a renovated and repaired gym, after being displaced from the structure since the beginning of the school year. What began with principal Brian Stefani noticing a few loose ceiling tiles in June, ended with a major repair, to be completed in early December and a rather large bill to School District 20 (SD20). Kootenay South Métis Society gathered for Louis Riel Day at the Trail United Church on Saturday for a dinner to honour his memory and contributions to the Metis community. The evening opened in prayer by Marilyn Taylor, Métis Kootenay regional director. Almost 100 families and friends of the organization enjoyed turkey with all the fixings. Entertainment was led (from the left) by Donna Wright, Cylis Boutilier, 11, Shayla Workman, 10, and Ann-Marie Smith dancing the Métis jig and performing traditional heartbeat drumming songs.

An extra daily flight to Trail from Vancouver should net the city’s lone air passenger carrier a 35 per cent increase in air traffic volume this year, says the company’s vice president of commercial services. Spencer Smith said Pacific Coastal had targeted a 38 per cent increase in air traffic out of Trail when they elected to add a third daily flight to the Lower Mainland last spring. But it is likely the company will realize a slightly lower increase at 35 per cent — or around 7,000 passengers per year — when it is all said and done, he said. The airline added the evening trip to and from Vancouver Sunday through Friday, something that had never been tried in the Silver City. “We felt it was a good scheduling and timing for flights, but we really had no way to know for sure to know if the region would welcome a flight at that time of the day,” said Smith. “And they did. We had real good regional support for that time.” See EXTRA, Page 3
