Ambulance delays put firefighters on medical duty By Treena Mielke

The Rimbey fire chief fears volunteers will quit joining the department and members will drop out because of the increase in calls where they are being forced to make medical decisions before the ambulance arrives. “It’s going to destroy the volunteer fire department,” said John Weisgerber. “It’s putting them in a situation for which they are not trained and for which they don’t have the proper equipment. And the province won’t be happy until they do this.” In his report to council, Weisgerber said responding to medical calls is a growing concern. “There has been a number of calls this year for fire to respond to medical calls because there is no EMS in town and we are not sure this a good thing because we are not all trained as EMS (personnel).” Coun. Paul Payson, who is also a firefighter, said the fire department is often at an accident scene up to half an hour before the ambulance arrives. “Our volunteer fire personnel are making decisions that they are not particularly trained for. They are hard decisions to make and they really have no idea if it is the right decision.” On the flip side, Payson noted communication between the ambulance personnel and the fire department has always been strong. “We have a strong history of dialogue between ambulance and fire. We share the dispatch and that’s the positive side to this.” In an earlier interview, Jim Garland, executive director for EMS dispatch communication and deployment, said a borderless provincial system has been in place since the government took over ambulance services in 2009. He said under this system ambulances respond to wherever the need is greatest at any given time. He said when ambulances in a community are out on a call, another ambulance may be called in, whether it is sitting in the next closest community or en route, depending on the geographical distance. Associated Ambulance in Rimbey, Sylvan Lake and Red Deer are handled through a dispatch centre in Red Deer. Weisgerber believes the system to be detrimental to small centres such as Rimbey and ambulances are being sent to cover calls in larger centres where the volume is higher. Associated Ambulance took over the service in Rimbey in 2011. The service has two ambulances and four staff on duty 24/7. They can also have 200 casual staff from within their service area whom can be called on.

A few years and what seems like hundreds of news stories and columns, I covered the Red Deer Rebels hockey team. I loved it. I was definitely a fan of the Red Deer Rebels, first and foremost, sitting in the sometimes almost empty Treena Mielke stands, cheering, stampOn The Other Side ing my feet and yelling, not acting at all like the impartial reporter I was supposed to be. In the end, win or lose, and it seemed it was mostly lose, I would join the other reporters and the radio guys behind the stands where we would interview the coach. With pens and tape recorders we would quickly engulf him, sucking out any personal space the poor guy would struggle to hang onto, firing hard questions at him, relentless like pistols — “What is wrong with your team, tonight, or really, this season?” “Do you have any new strategies planned?” “What about cuts? Trades?” “Tell us something we don’t know.” I would brush the popcorn of my jacket, make sure my pen was not out of ink again, smooth out my crumpled notebook and humbly trail in behind the other “sports guys” who seemed to know a lot more about sports than me, probably because they did. That was when I met Jesse Wallin. I liked him immediately. I liked him because he treated each and everyone of the media with professional courtesy regardless of whether the Rebels won or lost. And it seemed they lost lots that year, not even making it to the playoffs. And I liked him because over and above his professional courtesy, he was always kind. He took the extra minute to answer the last question hanging in the air, voiced by a reporter, (that would be me), who was more than a little intimated by the “big guys.” So when I read the headlines in the Red Deer Advocate that said in bold, black print, “Rebels coach fired” I thought back to those days when I used to trail the other sports guys to that place behind the stands where Jesse was put on the hot seat and fired at by us media type people every week. I understand he took the media for lunch after the big announcement of his firing to say thanks for the way they treated him in all his years of coaching. And I think to myself what goes around comes around. In his article, Advocate sports editor Greg Meachem said Jesse Wallin remains a class act. I liked that. And Jesse, himself said I am not my job, though I love hockey and will always be a Red Deer Rebel. And, I liked that, too. Jesse’s own hockey career was cut short when he suffered a concussion in his first game with the AHL in the Lowell Lock monsters after being acquired by the Calgary Flames in the summer of 2003. Prior to his concussion he made his NHL debut, playing a single game for Detroit Red Wings. He received the CHL and WHL Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1997 and the WHL Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1998. In my lifetime, I have been lucky enough to meet what I would call a few class acts — many of them in the field of sports. And, as with Jesse, these class acts know what its like to bask in the illusive warmth and glow of fame and glory. But, more importantly, they know how to lose. And that’s when “class” is no longer an act. It’s who they are.
Where should truckers park? Dear Editor: I live on a designated truck route in town, the fine I received today is for $250 for parking my semi-truck. In Rimbey there is nowhere for someone in the transportation industry to legally park. In winter we have nowhere to plug in to keep our engines from freezing up. The town does not give any options for us. The only options we have is to park in front of our houses. Many people in town work in the trucking industry and everyone depends on the service we provide. I offered to move my truck (not knowing that you can’t park on a truck route) but was still issued a
$250 fine — three times the amount of any major city. Now that I can’t park in front of my house it raises other security issues; the possibility of theft vandalism and of course the threat of another fine. I have talked with my neighbours and none of them mind my truck being parked. I do not sit and idle. When I am here it forces the vehicles using our street to slow down (many people exceed the speed limit and it would appear that my street is a race strip, yet I have never seen one person pulled over for this). I would like to know if the town has any idea of what we can do and where we can park? Ken Brown
Anglin sends mixed message Dear Editor: It appears MLA Joe Anglin is totally confused or is trying to confuse the public with the idea the government will be funding the transmission lines. To start with, the electrical infrastructure in this province is rate-based not tax-based, meaning the cost of this will be added to our monthly electrical energy bills and will not be coming out of government coffers. The Progressive Conservative government’s role in this fiasco was to pass legislation allowing these lines to be built without first proving the need — not to spend tax dollars buying land and building transmission lines. I am not in favour of any electrical transmission line, AC or DC, if it is not needed. However, if it is needed, I would be more inclined to lean toward having a DC line rather than the alterna-
tive. A few reasons being: • less line loss • fewer health problems (human and livestock) • capacity can be increased without erecting more towers and stringing more conductors. Mr. Anglin is now questioning the government on the cost of the HVDC lines. Where was his concern about the cost of the DC line in 200809 when he was a proponent for it? If Mr. Anglin were the transmission engineer he touts himself to be, he would have done a cost analysis of the project back then, thereby knowing it would cost far more electricity than an AC facility. Remember he was the one who took full credit for advancing the HVDC argument with respect to the 500 KV line. Jim Vetsch

School pilot projects cause some concerns Dear Editor: How many of you would feel comfortable with your child’s education being sacrificed for the possible greater good of future students? As altruistic as I believe we are, I would wager no one would sign up for this. Well I certainly haven’t but this is exactly what is happening to my daughter. Over the past year I have stood by as the transparency of her funding for “special education” has disappeared, as has her aide, to help in main stream classes, and her individualized help in the special needs class. The “inclusive” education mandate our provincial government has adopted is being implemented and even administration can’t explain what exactly this means for my special student other than there is less accountability, less assistance but this is all for her good and will improve her quality of education. My child is a guinea pig and so is yours. Wolf Creek Public Schools has a few pilot programs this year within the district and then next year it’s a full on inclusion mandate. This means special

needs students in main stream classes with or without an aide (my experience is without) in classes already bursting at the high school level with more than 30 students. My child unfortunately is not a squeaky wheel and I know she is just going to sit there with everything flying over her head. That’s fine for your students but you better hope there are not three extra special squeaky wheels in your child’s class. Every teacher is supposed to be a special needs expert and be able to increase their class size without feeling overburdened. I understand inclusion has worked well for some special students in the past but special needs funding formulas no longer exist. The government has decided that they’d rather not have funding accountability for special needs students so basically my daughter no longer has special funding so don’t expect anything “special.” This is an experiment in education that the government is waging will work, with our children’s future weighing in the balance. Let’s hope lady luck is on their side because if not there will be years of lost educational opportunity, overburdened teachers, special students who may not reach their full potential either relegated to an understaffed special classroom or lost in the sea of mainstream education. Please get on the phone if this doesn’t sit well with you. Patients rushed into the emergency department at Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre now have a better chance of having the nature of their condition diagnosed quickly without being sent to a larger centre. Site manager Colleen Connolley said the hospital has a portable ultrasound machine used to identify conditions such as internal bleeding, fluids around the heart and ectopic pregnancies. Funding for the $50,000 unit was raised through David Thompson Health Trust and corporate and individual donations. Connolley said the machine is much needed and appreciated, and while it doesn’t guarantee patients won’t be transferred, it allows physicians to make a more accurate diagnosis. “It can be moved from room to room and patient to patient It enhances the diagnoses of patients giving us immediately visualization of the problem.” Dr. Jurie deBruyn, one of three physicians trained to use the machine, said the portable ultrasound could save lives. “The device has many benefits that provide the community with improved care,” he said. Funding for $50,000 unit was raised through David Thompson Health Trust and corporate and individual donations. Corrie Fortner, Executive Director for the David Thompson Health Trust said she is impressed with the community’s caring and giving spirit. “The trust has been working with Rimbey for a relatively short time but, in that time, we have come to realize that this community places a very high value on ensuring there is quality care available to their citizens.” Connolley agreed. “We are just so very fortunate to live in a community that supports its local hospital and programs so well and are willing to make this type of equipment a possibility.”

Bingo players help out Bentley sports groups By June Norvila and Treena Mielke
The Bentley Hotel made a donation to help Bentley youth who skate. Photo by June Norvila
Although Christmas is more than a month away, it seems Santa has come early to Bentley youngsters involved in minor hockey or CanSkate. A group of seniors who play bingo every Saturday afternoon at the Bentley Hotel and hotel owner Shengli Lee Jiang agreed to give $1,00 raised from charitable bingo games to Bentley Minor Hockey and CanSkate programs. “The money we are giving this year is money we had left over from last year,” said Gordon Currier, one of the Bentley residents who participates in the bingos. On Nov. 14, Hank Winters presented a $500 cheque to Bentley Minor Hockey President Darren Gyori and Ethel Beisal presented a $500 cheque to Bentley Skating Club treasurer Jennifer Goddu. Currier said around a dozen or more bingo players participate in the weekly games held Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. “It’s up and down. Most of the players are grandmas and grandpas. We need to get a younger crowd involved as well,” he said. “If we don’t get a
younger crowd doing it, eventually it won’t happen anymore.” Currier said the bingos are a social time for people to get together, visit and enjoy camaraderie. “You don’t have to drink,” he said. “You can have orange juice or water or coffee or whatever.” The bingo players and Jiang are pleased to be able to donate money to the local groups, he said. “Every organization can always use a bit of help.” Hank Winters and Stan Coultis share the bingo calling job while Ethel Beisal keeps track of the books and money. Winters has been involved with fundraising for more than 12 years and has been able to scrounge free bingo machines and cards from places that have shut down their bingos. Beisal has also been involved with bingos at the hotel for some time. Jiang, who has owned the hotel for about a year and a half is happy to help out local skaters. Bingos at the hotel will continue until April and more funding from this season’s charitable bingos will be forthcoming.

Bethlehem Walk symbolizes the Christmas Story By Treena Mielke In the true spirit of the season, the Bethlehem Walk will be held again in Rimbey, symbolizing in a special way, the Christmas Story. The walk is to be held Sunday, Dec 2 at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. and will take place at the Alliance Church property on 54th Avenue. The walk will take modern day travellers to several stations where actors dressed in appropriate costumes will do their part to depict the walk Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem where the baby Jesus was born. The biblical story is re-created through the help of farmers who bring in hay and live animals as well as through a sound system and special lighting. The walk begins appropriately with actors portraying Mary and the angel Gabriel stationed at the first stop along the journey. Actors dressed as Caesar and some dressed as tax collectors
accept monetary and food donations for the food bank at the second station. And, the third station is set up as an inn where there is no vacancy. The Christian Reform Church choir dressed in white robes portraying angels singing of Jesus’ birth make the fourth station a truly magnificent, awe inspiring part of the walk. And finally, the lowly manger in the hay and the baby Jesus, concludes the Christmas story and the Bethlehem walk. Dawn Providenti, one of the many people who help organize the event and is also one of the actors, loves being involved. “It’s amazing, it’s disappointing when it is over. To see that many people come together and representation from the churches. It is wonderful.” Spectators are welcome to come into the church for refreshments following the walk. Stuart Lyster will also provide hayrides for the children.

raise the other half on our own,” she said. “We have a fundraising committee in place who is working very hard.” Keetch would like to see the expanded library in place by the summer, but notes there are many variables in place. Tony Goode, Rimbey’s CAO, said town administration is looking into moving into the upstairs of the Provincial Building, but is waiting to hear from the province regarding purchase or lease options. According to the Alberta Public Library Standards formula, the Rimbey Municipal Library should be 6,500 square feet to support the town population and half the county’s population. The library is currently between 2,300 and 2,800 square feet.

By Treena Mielke It’s delicious. It’s sweet. It’s healthy and free of additives. It’s honey! Emery’s Honey House northwest of Bluffton has been in operation for more than 30 years. Even though owners Chester and Bonnie Emery have faced many unforeseen challenges they have kept on, keeping on. “We enjoy it though sometimes you do think about a different career like nursing or something, but we’ve decided to stick it out and we’ve done okay,” said Bonnie Emery. The Emerys’ interest in beekeeping began several years ago when they lived in British Columbia. “It was something that suited both of us,” said Emery. “We wanted to farm and live in the country.” The couple purchased a beekeeping operation from a Bluffton man who had his honey house set up in the old creamery in town. The creamery was destroyed by fire. “It was a big loss, his whole crop burned and he put his operation up for sale,” Emery recalled. “The bees were out in separate bee yards and they were safe.” She and her husband purchased the bees, bought a quarter section and built their own honey house. Over the years they have enjoyed a successful beekeeping business, but Emery said new challenges continue to present themselves such as dealing with new farming methods that involve using more chemicals and fewer plant species (mono culture farming). programs for students within their geographical are. The new act will allow students from other areas access to a school’s programs. Jacobs says this could provide challenges for schools in communicating with a student’s parents. Jacobs says Alberta Education hopes to have the act approved by spring but implementing it from its currents stage could take longer than a year. “The Education Act brings to life the vision for education that thousands of Albertans shared with us through Inspiring Education,” Education Minister Jeff Johnson said, in a press release. The press release also states the act acknowledges that students, teachers, and especially parents need to work together to provide the best education for students. “The Education Act is actually the first legislation in Canada to formally recognize the role of parents as a child’s first and most important teacher,” said Johnson. “As a parent, that is something I am very proud of.” For more information, visit Alberta Education’s website at www.education. alberta.ca/educationact.

Alberta’s new Education Act proposal could result in many changes within the Wolf Creek School Division. According to Wolf Creek superintendent Larry Jacobs, Bill 3 has had two readings. Now, it’ll typically go through an amendment and clause review process, Jacobs said. “Some new aspects of the Education Act refer to powers of the boards. That may modify how the boards can act, including our own,” said Jacobs. “It’s going to drive the way so many things work; transportation, inclusion.” “We might have to rewrite the policies and procedures that drive the way the organization operates,” Jacobs added. The Wolf Creek School Division has a 2.4 kilometre radius guide for bus transportation student grants. Changes in the act could make the radius smaller, which could alter factors such as funding and the number of buses required. Changes to school program inclusion may also be subject to change, Jacobs said. “Under the old School Act we were given a geographical area within the province. Under the old act, schools and divisions are required to provide educational

Daniel William Seely passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Nov. 9, 2012 at the age of 45. He was born in Rimbey, Alberta on June 29, 1967 to Don and Leona Seely, the third of four children. From Three Hills to Lacombe to Rimbey and many places in between, Dan made an impression wherever he went. For the majority of his life he worked on service rigs and very much enjoyed what he did. He will be remembered for his love of friends and family, work, loud music and all things combustible. Dan was a man of extremes: exceedingly generous, exceptionally creative, and immensely fun loving. Daniel was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his two brothers Lloyd (Tracey) and Mike (Gap), his sister Jackie (Richard), his children James (Sierra) and Jordan, his granddaughter Dayla, Karen Herrmann, Shirley Soloway-Seely, and Bonnie Wathen. He is also survived by his niece, nephew, stepchildren and step-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life was held at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, November 18th.
