three-year-old is safely back home in Fernie after allegedly being abducted by his father last week. It is thought 39-year-old Robert Barnett kidnapped his son Alvin Thursday afternoon. Just before 7 a.m. Friday, Alvin Barnett was found alive and unharmed on a street in Whitefish, Montana, about 80 kilometres southeast of the Canadian border. Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, Senior Media Relations Officer at the RCMP, said

Alvin was found unhurt. “It is our understanding that he is unharmed,” said Moskaluk. “Aside from being tired and hungry, he was found in good condition and in good spirits. Barnett was arrested in Whitefish at approximately 6:45 a.m. Friday outside a private residence. On Thursday night, he had approached a man near the Pin and Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish and asked for money. The man agreed to buy him breakfast the next morning and let him sleep in his car outside the man’s house. On Friday morning, the man realized

that Robert was wanted by authorities and called police. The Flathead County Sheriff and Whitefish Police Department arrested Robert without incident and Alvin was found unharmed. Police confirmed that Barnett was arrested and detained in Montana. He is known to police and has a criminal record. Barnett is now charged in B.C. with one count of abduction by a parent or guardian and two counts of theft over $5,000, according to online court records. He has told the U.S. authorities that he does not want to return to Canada

and is deciding whether he will fight extradition according to Undersheriff Dave Leib of the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities believe that Alvin and his father crossed the Roosville border into Eureka, Montana some time before 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Earlier, an Amber Alert was issued by B.C. RCMP alleging that Robert Barnett was heading south on Highway 93 with his son in a 2002 blue Subaru Outback. Moskaluk said that police at 3:15 p.m. received the report of a parental abduction after a supervised visit between Barnett and his son

at the Red Tree Lodge in Fernie. He said the Amber Alert was issued because the situation met all the criteria, and they believed the child was in imminent danger. He could not say how Barnett and Alvin were able to leave the room of the hotel where they were having a supervised visit, and leave in Barnett’s car. An Amber Alert is intended only for the most serious, time-critical child abduction cases. It is not intended for cases involving parental abductions, except in lifethreatening situations.
