High demand for tech jobs highlight training programs British Columbia has a ready source of great jobs and careers in technology. Our education programs need to keep up with that demand.

John Leech, Executive Director of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC, explains that, “Every system we rely on – water, roads and transportation, telecommunications and internet, hydro and natural gas, environment, health, forestry, and many more – utilizes engineering and applied science technology professionals working in the background. B.C.’s telecom and IT, animation and many other sectors produce new careers every month.”

ASTTBC has more than 10,000 members currently working in thousands of careers available to graduates of two-year diploma programs available at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and other B.C. colleges and institutes.

“Our members enjoy

rewarding, well-paid and often recession-proof careers in public service and the private sector alike,” Leech states.

“For huge numbers of young men and women, technology is the answer. In B.C. and across Canada, technology permeates every workplace and job. We need to get capable students involved and engaged in applied sciences and head off workforce shortages by building a B.C. ‘Science and Technology Culture’.”

Leech calls on government for renewed efforts to build student skills and confidence in math and science programming.

“We especially need to interest young students in science and how things work,” Leech says.

“Young students use technology every day – smart phones, iPads and computers.

They play video games, even build robots.”

Leech lauds the recent “Year of Science” program

that encouraged students toward so-called “STEM” subjects – science, technology, engineering and math. Citing the recent $6 million B.C. campaign to encourage careers in trades, Leech urges a similar effort to build awareness of engineering technology education and careers.

BC Technology Industries Association employers like Telus and BC Hydro and many smaller, technology-rich companies say the single most important position they now struggle to fill is Specialty Technician/Technologist.

Even the Canadian Council of Chief Executives expressed concern that only 37 per cent of 16- to 18-year-olds were interested in taking even one post-secondary course in sciences, according to a recent Angus Reid survey.

Leech says the opportunities for those seeking work in the technology field are considerable given a wave of retirements.

Search and Rescue receive $25K from Community, Sport and Cultural Development ministry DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter

The province has awarded the Quesnel Search and Rescue a $25,000 grant.

Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett was on hand at the facility Tuesday to make the announcement.

“Quesnel Search and Rescue provides the critical service of finding and assisting British Columbians in crisis,” he said.

“With this grant, the B.C. government is proud to support the work of this organization that is dedicated to the safety and well-being of British Columbians in their community.”

The grant was provided through community gaming grants.

“We are grateful to receive this gaming grant,” president of the Quesnel Search and Rescue Robert Zimmerman said.

The grant will help Quesnel’s Search and Rescue, which is run by volunteers, to attend more training as well as help with purchasing equipment.

Zimmerman pointed out the facility doesn’t currently have all equipment necessary to run efficiently, including a boat.

With half of its search and rescues being in rivers, the facility has been relying on volunteers renting their own boats to the organization for use.

Mayor Mary Sjostrom says she is excited to have extra help for this important program.

“It’s a top priority to ensure the protection and safety of our citizens,” she said.

“This community gaming grant will help the continuation of Quesnel’s emergency services and sup-

port the work of the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to this agency to asset British Columbians and their loved ones in times when they need it most.”

Bennett was impressed with the facility despite its reliance on volunteers.

“I’m impressed with the facilities that you have,” Bennett said.

“I’m impressed especially with the community spirit here.”

Bennett toured the Search and Rescue facility as part of his announcement, as well as other projects in the area, including the West Quesnel Land Stability project.

“Mayor Mary Sjostrom and the city have a great attitude toward that project,” Bennett said.

“They know what needs to be done and they’re doing it.”

He was particularly impressed with the complexity of the project.

“I think the citizens of Quesnel should be very proud of what’s happening there,” he said.

“It’s without a doubt one of the most interesting, innovating projects I’ve ever seen anywhere.

“It’s a fascinating challenge.”

Bennett also visited Quesnel’s drinking water supply, as well as the College of New Caledonia to tour the college’s trades program.

“I saw Well #10,” Bennett explained.

“You’re getting to drink water from 200 feet down that’s beautiful, clear, clean water and it doesn’t have to have chlorine put in it.

“That’s a bigger deal than you might think.”

The Quesnel Search and Rescue is part of 5,300 community groups receiving gaming grants in 201112.

Debt and Taxes It’s been interesting to listen to Liberal MLAs and candidates position themselves in advance of the upcoming budget and the election that will follow on its heels next May. The main argument they all seem to be making is that we need a Liberal government again because they, alone, can be trusted to hold the line on taxes and debt.

Unfortunately, the facts don’t support this partisan contention.

Take the carbon tax as an example. The Liberal government introduced this tax in 2008. Yet, despite having voted for successive increases to this tax since 2009, MLA Donna Barnett is now suggesting the carbon tax be “axed” in an effort to curry favour with her rural voters, who generally don’t like this particular tax.

Unfortunately, MLA Barnett fails to point out that axing the carbon tax would create a $1.18 billion dollar hole in the government’s annual tax revenues. If she truly does want this tax ‘axed’ then she has an obligation to tell her voters what tax increases she would support to replace that revenue. Or, would she simply wish to see BC have a structural deficit by not replacing the carbon tax with tax increases elsewhere?

Speaking of deficits and the debt they create, I read that the newly nominated Liberal Candidate for Cariboo North is claiming we need to re-elect a Liberal government because they will hold the line on debt -- every dollar of which she views as an unfair burden on our children.

In the spirit of informed debate: under the BC Liberals the provincial debt has ballooned from $33.8 billion in 2001 to a projected $66.4 billion in 2014. This does not include the massive debt burden of BC Hydro or the financial liabilities the government holds for public-private partnerships.

The Liberal track record on debt and deficits is on par with the NDP government that preceded them, not supporting the argument that the Liberals ought to be re-elected because of their fiscal prudence. Like all western governments, both of BC’s political parties have struggled when in office to keep a rein on spending while keeping taxes low.

If we are to truly elevate the debate leading up to the next election and get beyond petty partisan arguments, then every MLA and candidate should be compelled give the public all of the facts and the background necessary to help them form an informed opinion and make an informed choice next May.

Return to PST worries businesses TOM FLETCHER Black Press Returning to the old provincial sales tax next April 1 will increase paperwork for B.C. businesses and cost them harmonized sales tax credits on equipment and other inputs, the legislature finance committee reminded the B.C. government Wednesday.

After its annual tour of the province to get input on the 2013 budget, the committee urges Finance Minister Mike de Jong to consider its expert panel recommendations to ease the impact on business of scrapping the HST. Some industry associations want the government to provide a tax credit that would compensate them for the PST they will have to pay on purchases of machinery and equipment. Those taxes were lifted under the HST, which recovered revenue by extending seven-percent sales taxes to a range of consumer services that won’t be taxed starting next spring.

The finance committee was also asked to consult the public on a “madein-B.C. value-added tax” that would accomplish some of the goals of the HST under another name. That would be a volatile discussion to begin a provincial election set for May 14, 2013.

The administrative burden of the switch starts with businesses reprogramming cash registers and other systems to go back to two separate

sales taxes. The switch to the HST in 2010 revealed some national retailers were not accurately applying the B.C. sales tax, which has decades of accumulated exemptions and rules that don’t apply in other provinces.

The finance ministry has been working on a system to allow businesses to register online for the return of the PST and to train owners of thousands of businesses that have started up since the

HST conversion in 2010.

The ministry has set up a website for businesses to manage the transition at www.pstinbc.ca The finance committee has also endorsed a widespread business call to balance the provincial budget starting next spring.

The effects of the worldwide financial crisis of 2008 pushed B.C.’s books into the red and deficits continued this year as B.C. had to repay a $1.6 billion HST

transition fund provided by Ottawa.

The B.C. Chamber of Commerce and other groups also called on the finance committee to ease the burden of B.C.’s carbon tax. Grain growers, greenhouse operators and cement manufacturers have called for relief from carbon tax on fuels, arguing that it puts them at a competitive disadvantage with Alberta, Washington and other jurisdictions.

Severance Pay? Premier Christy Clark has questioned a decision made in secret by an all-party committee to extend $127,000 in severance pay to MLAs who are recalled by voters. And so she should.

The decision was made in February 2011, at a time when recall campaigns were targeting B.C. Liberal MLAs over the imposition of the harmonized sales tax.

It was belatedly disclosed in minutes from the Legislative Assembly Management Committee, which began public disclosure of its proceedings this fall.

The severance amount equals 15 months of an MLA’s base salary.

Severance has been available to MLAs defeated in elections since 2007, and also to those who retire at election time before reaching six years in office, when they becoming eligible for a lucrative pension.

Clark was asked about extending severance to recalled MLAs. She said the government doesn’t control the committee, which is chaired by legislative speaker Bill Barisoff and has both B.C. Liberal and NDP members.

“I think a lot of people in a tough economy would look at that and say they don’t get it and I am one of those people,” Clark said. Good for her, now do something about it.

Clark added she has not had an opportunity to speak to committee members. Barisoff defended the decision, telling reporters that MLAs who are recalled because of cabinet decisions rather than personal misconduct deserve severance so they can make the transition to another job. It can be difficult for defeated MLAs to find work, he said. What a crock.

What Barisoff doesn’t seem to understand that not getting re-elected is like your employer letting you go and, okay, maybe an argument can be made for severance, albeit a weak one.

Being the subject of a successful recall, whether because of a cabinet decision or not, is akin to being fired with cause.

And, it shows the disconnect those who inhabit Victoria often have with the rest of the province.

I’m a princess at the pumps

welve years ago I lived in Richmond, BC, where all the gas stations were full serve and I couldn’t pump my own fuel even if I wanted to.

It was perfect, because I certainly had no desire to do so, but in the fall of 2000 I moved to the Okanagan and that all changed.

“You’re completely self serve?” I asked a cashier in horror after filling my own tank on a cold, windy day.

“Yup,” she said dismissively.

“There aren’t any full serve stations around here, Princess.”

Turns out, that wasn’t exactly true. I didn’t realize that, though, until just this year.

“Hello?” I said suspiciously when a man in a uniform approached me at Super Save Gas a few months ago.

“What can I get for you ma’am?” he asked smiling as we both stood awkwardly beside my car.

“What can you get for me?” I replied, confused with his question.

“Would you like a fill up?” he asked.

On A Brighter Note “Regular?”

“This is full serve?” I asked in shock.

“Seriously?”

After finding out they’d been in business for almost 30 years and were full serve that entire time I looked at their road sign and there it was: WE SERVE. How had I not noticed this before? “‘SUPER SAVE GAS’ is huge and ‘WE SERVE’ is tiny,” I said, trying to justify my lame observation skills.

“I would have been coming here the last 12 years if I’d known.”

Joyfully I got back in the car as my fuel was pumped and my windows were washed. Good old fashioned service – ah.

Attempting to calculate in my head a weekly $60 fillup multiplied by 12 years, my brain began to throb.

To honour my relaxed state, I grabbed my calculator and figured out how much money I could have spent at this station had I known they existed all that time: $37,440.

“You need to get your ‘WE SERVE’ sign way bigger and in flashing lights,” I said, handing the attendant a tip.

“If there are other people like me around, it will be well worth the investment.”

Later that day I posted on Facebook a picture of my new favourite gas station which was not only in the town that I lived, but close to my house and near the grocery store where I shopped.

The fact that I just discovered this gem for the first time after a dozen years was ridiculous to some and a revelation to others.

“I had no idea there was a full serve station here in West Kelowna!” one of my Facebook friends said excitedly after reading my post.

“You’re a natural blonde aren’t you?” asked another friend sarcastically.

Someone else called me lazy.

I didn’t care. I was just happy that I didn’t have to

pump my own gas anymore and I wanted everyone around me to know they didn’t have to either.

Of course, some people said they’d rather do it themselves. People like my husband.

These are often the same folks who don’t mind checking in their own luggage at the airport, booking their own vacations online or scanning and bagging their own groceries at the supermarket.

I despise doing all of those things and not just because I’m lazy. I like dealing with real people rather than the isolated feeling of always interacting alone with a machine. I dislike that many service jobs have been cut in recent years with their duties being heaped onto the consumer, often at no extra savings.

If I have a choice between two businesses and one can provide service with a smile, that’s where I’ll spend my money. Smiles might be free, but they’re worth a whole lot to a princess like me.

The Quesnel Golden Centre is the home of the Old Age Pensioners Organization (OAPO), a nationwide organization working for the benefit and enhancing the quality of life of all seniors across Canada.

There are many fun and interesting activities ongoing four days a week at Quesnel’s Golden Centre on Front Street at the corner of St. Laurent, open between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Centre is wheel-chair accessible.

From 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., a generous lunch is served at a cost of $4 for members, $5 for non-members and includes home-made soups, a variety of fresh sandwiches, desserts and tea or coffee.

National Child Day, Nov. 20

The Governor General of Canada proclaimed Nov. 20 as National Child Day in 1993 to commemorate the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child and Canada signing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

Each year National Child Day is given a theme. The

theme for last year was The Child Shall have the Right to Freedom of Expression.

ECEBC members will be distributing blue ribbons during the month of November.

Problem of owners unable to care for domestic pets is ongoing ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

W

hen Fauna Eyford of Crooked Leg Ranch got the call on Monday morning, she knew her mother would understand why she bailed on her. It was another rescue call.

The agitated voice on the other end of the phone said they had dropped by to help a friend with his animals, but once they arrived his first call was for an ambulance to take the couple to the hospital.

However, also in the home in desperate need of aid, were seven dogs, two geese, a cat and budgies.

“I wish I could say this was an isolated case, but we’re called about once a month for this type of thing,” Fauna said.

After securing permission to remove the animals, Fauna and a couple of Crooked Leg Ranch volunteers found temporary boarding

arrangements for all of them except the cat.

“It’s still missing,” Willow Eyford said.

With the removal of these animals, Crooked Leg Ranch is again on the hook for vet costs and other related costs. One of the animals in critical distress was euthanized with the permission of the owners. The rest, after a bath and a little grooming, are being placed in foster care.

“This isn’t a unique situation,” Willow said.

“And I wish I could say this was the worst I’ve seen, but it isn’t.”

She went on to say owners (for whatever reason) find themselves unable to care for animals and this is something people need to talk about before they get to that point.

“If you have a pet, have a plan,” she said.

Both Fauna and Willow agreed in circumstances where there’s a clear protocol for ailing or

even deceased owners, there’s no clear protocol for animals that may be in need just as desperately as their masters.

“Owners, though, are also neglected and that’s where neighbours, service people and others who may notice something isn’t right, maybe they haven’t seen that neighbour for a few days or they notice livestock in need [a pig and two geese were dead on the property of this most recent case], have to step up, drop by and check on these people,” Willow said.

And, Fauna added, if someone is checking on the owners, then they are also witnessing animal conditions.

“We’ve seen some horrible situations where owners and animals are in deplorable conditions,” Willow said.

However, Willow and Fauna said they can only do so much. Everything they do, they do as volunteers and although

“When you see circumstances like this and the condition of the animals, how do you walk away?” Fauna said.

“But obviously other did turn their back on these people. There were maintenance people in there, they have neighbours, casual drivers passing the place would have noticed things were deteriorating; I don’t understand how this can happen.”

Willow added they deal with the animals but this is really about people who can’t speak for themselves; it’s about humanity.

“What else do we do but keep answering the phone,” Fauna said.

Apparently the friend called the SPCA but, as it was after hours, they just got the answering machine.

SPCA manager Colby

O’Flynn said if the public witnesses animals in need they should phone the RCMP who can then dispatch the appropriate agencies to handle such cases, including the Quesnel SPCA. “We’ve offered Crooked Leg Ranch blankets and supplies and currently have room for some of the animals,” O’Flynn said.

Willow said all the animals were being fostered which is the ideal environment as several of the dogs have specific veterinary issues.

Both the Eyfords and the SPCA agree this is an ongoing problem.

“We don’t have the answers, but its not hard to see the problem,” Willow said.

“People need to be more aware and speak up, stir it up a bit and don’t give up just because you run into a barrier,” Fauna said.

Crooked Leg Ranch is always looking for caring foster homes for the

animals that end up in their care.

They’re also trying to establish a sponsorship program where people can sponsor a specific animal.

“We can always make good use of used towels and blankets and of course cash is always welcome,” Willow said.

“In fact, people can donate on our behalf to any of the vet clinics in town – we have a tab with all of them.”

She also said they always appreciate any volunteer drivers who can help with moving animals around.

And a special hats off to anyone travelling to the coast who has room for a cage as they send animals ready for adoption to various coastal rescue and animal organizations.

“I wish these situations were rare but unfortunately they’re all too common,” Willow said of the animals most recently removed.

Hey! Ocean deserves the !

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter It might be a little early for Coldsnap news, but mother nature didn't wait for winter before she brought snow and the organizers of Coldsnap didn't wait until the festival to bring Prince George last year's favourite Coldsnap band.

Coldsnap organizers took advantage of Hey! Ocean's cross-country tour to announce this year's line-up while bringing good music to Prince George.

Proving their popularity, Hey! Ocean packed the Thirsty Moose Pub, up at UNBC. The pub served as a great venue, with reasonably priced drinks and an intimate atmosphere, which allowed for some interaction between bands and the crowd.

The crowd itself was a mixed affair, with university kids making up the greater part of the crowd, with saltand-pepper haired attendees shaken into the mix.

The concert gained momentum through the night, culminating in an avalanche of energy from both band and audience.

Local band Imera's Thieves opened the night with danceable indie songs. Imera's Thieves were neophytes, the show being only their fourth live performance of their short career, which showed through with some nervous banter, but some solid songs and wellrehearsed set brought the first signs of life from an audience still frigid from the cold.

Alvarez Kings, an up and coming English band, took over the audience warming duties.

The four piece band of Yorkshiremen had been traveling with Hey! Ocean for four weeks, through much of Canada and previously through the north-east of

U.S.A. Their familiarity with Hey! Ocean allowed the boundaries between the two bands to blur for a bit.

Their energy moved like ripples from a stone in a pond, from the bouncing band on stage and the first bouncing row moving outwards to nodding heads and tapping feet to smooth out around the standees at the back.

The music itself was a very British retrospective of the '80 post-punk scene à la Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand, with plenty of electronic, 80s beats and syncopated clapping, which the audience was encouraged to join in on.

The Alvarez Kings pounded their way through their set, barely pausing between songs to chatter with the audience.

Half-way through the set, pockets of dancing began to form towards the back of the crowd as the music began to worm it's way past ears and into the legs and arms of the crowd, propelled by volume high enough to invert ear drums.

Before the end of the set both the Alvarez Kings' Sean Parkin the guitarist and Paul Thompson the bassist tumbled from the stage to play in the midst of the crowd, pumping up the energy of the crowd even further.

By the end of the set, the band had let everything out; Richard Walker the drummer now shirtless and Simon Thompson the lead singer sweating like he'd done eight hours hard labour, the band left the stage to huge applause.

The crowd began to push into the stage during the intermission, getting ready for the headliner, Vancouver's Hey! Ocean, obviously a crowd favourite.

After a quick introduction, the only band to get one on the night, Hey! Ocean took

to the stage to applause. The band, singer Ashleigh Ball, drummer David Vertesi and guitarist David Beckingham, were joined by Devon Lougheed of Vancouver band Beekeeper on stage to round out their live sound.

Their music flowed through an eclectic range of influences in a uniquely ineffable Canadian way that had strains of hip hop, reggae, ska, indie, pop and electronic mix together. Whatever influences wove through their music, Hey! Ocean ran them ragged and pumped them up to eleven in their show. Over top Ball's high voice existed somewhere between Minnie Mouse and Jessica Rabbit.

Ball was the centre of the band, a fount of charisma as she strutted back and forth between Lougheed and Beckingham on other side of her, ran her fingers through her hair and danced her way across the stage.

Three-quarters of the way through the show, their energy came to a head as the Alvarez Kings joined them on stage in a giant breakdown/freakout of pounding drums.

Hey! Ocean reached back to the 60s for material, covering the Ronettes "Be My Baby" after a brief introduction by way of Destiny Child's intro to Bootylicious.

After the band left the stage, the crowd yelled for an encore, but not in those words as English seems to have taken back the call for a lengthened set, so calls of 'one more song' rose from the crowd, who stayed at it until the band came back on stage to play the crowd out with a cover of Arcade Fire and another one of their own.

With those songs, the house lights went down and the crowd poured out of the pub and down the hill into the cold winter night.

Teresa Gail Freear (Terry Locke-Christiansen) May 17/53 – November 3/12

After staying very strong and positive through her 6 month battle with cancer, Teresa passed away peacefully at 6:45, the morning of November 3, with her family by her side. It is a great loss to all of us, not to have her with us anymore.

Teresa is survived by her husband and soul mate of 17 years, Michael Freear.

She is also survived by her two children, Rochelle Cornet (Gary) and Tyler Christiansen and her four grandbabies, Grady (11), Hayden (9), Hannah (9) and Klay (8). She also

leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Teresa was pre-deceased by her parents, Tom and Marion Locke and her brother, Robert (Bob) Locke.

Teresa was an extreme animal lover, a very caring and loving person, with an amazing sense of humor and a great laugh!

She loved working at her store, Grady Clothing Company (Kamloops and online) and enjoyed meeting all of her customers!

A memorial service will be held for Teresa at her house in McLure (1756 Pinegrove), on Sunday, November 18/12, at 1:00.

In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you support something Teresa loved, come in and support her store or send a donation to your local SPCA or rescue centre.

n open house Sept. 15 consisted of many interesting exhibits and some invited collectors, covering not only the five-acre site but also several periods of machinery development, from the labour of the horse to the gas motors and diesel engines wherever energy was needed as we developed many farms; a huge variety of trucks, old hand tools; an operating sawmill and a deep mine cage.

I could connect with a plot of the exhibits as I had experience in my early youth with many of them.

We have come a long way from when we started opening the country to now when physical labour is of less value and capital through technology and the computer steer our lives.

Exhibits of note would be: • a fresno which was pulled by a horse and dumped by the operator. As railway and highway grades were built, small amounts at a time, until unbelievable cuts and fills were made. (see the old PGE grades in Ten Mile Park) • a Gilcrest Jack – a heavy duty tool when big weights, such as loaded rail cars, had to be lifted • a Caterpiller

20 – an early small machine with crude controls and unique problems (I drove one at Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River and, winching too hard, lifted the track spring out of its container resulting in the engine rising and tilting backward) • farm tractors – a huge Godsend when long hours were required – the fuel was gas or diesel, not a bale of hay. No harness to put on and then take off, no

wandering either.

• metal technology – when strength that was needed by huge castings – now alloys are a fraction of the weight and very strong • gun collection – this was an invited display and well worth a visit. Some pieces were a Sten gun (famous for taking your finger tips off as the shell casings ejected – there was a right way to hold them.)

• a Harley Davidson 45 motor bike, 1940 – for dispatch riders before radios came along to transmit messages. (I had one and recall one gas fillup cost 63 cents at Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island) • a shaft cage from

a deep mine – when a small group of men would be closed in to the cage and lowered several 1,000 feet to the workings where the sun never shines.

Your life depended on that cable raising you after a day of candlelight or electric torch. (I experienced this at Island Mountain Mine in Wells.)

• Quincy coach, 1880s – it’s hard to

imagine bouncing along in one of these, all day until the next roadhouse. We cover 10 times the distance in our cars now with air conditioning.

At the park you can go back into the recent past for a few minutes to see where your kin laboured to make this life easier.

What are we busy about?

I

am old enough to remember when we joked about the classic response to our typical greeting, “How are you?” The joke was that nearly everyone, even after injury, replied, “Fine!”

But I am noticing a change. The response I usually get these days is, “I am so busy!”

Why are we so busy? Are we really any busier today that we were years ago? Are our “conveniences” giving us more options to fill time already spoken for? I’m reminded of a favourite quote from Henry David Thoreau: “It is not enough to be busy. . .the question is: What are we busy about?”

As we slide into the year-end holiday season, I want to be conscious of what I am busy about. The Gospel of Mark recounts one of my favourite stories illustrating this Peggy Corbett “worthy busy-ness.”

Seventh Day Adventist Church Jesus is, once again, fully occupied talking to the people and healing the sick. He has stopped at someone’s house and when word gets out that Jesus is in town, the rooms are soon packed – standing room only and no more can get in. But people keep arriving for help and this story tells of some really “busy” friends. They have brought a buddy who is paralyzed, and on seeing that there is no access to Jesus through the door, they promptly climb up onto the roof, remove the thatch and lower their friend down, right into the midst of the crowd and next to Jesus. The account notes that Jesus immediately takes in the great effort taken to reach Him and, true to form, graciously both forgives and heals the stricken man.

I have often thought of how thankful that man must have been, but now I stop to think of the relief and smiles on the faces of his friends. These, no doubt, were people with busy lives, but someone else needed help!

And that puts me in mind of something my grandmother used to say: If you want something done, ask a busy man.

Since I am lucky enough to live here in Quesnel, I know many “busy people” who are NOT too busy to lend a hand when they see a need. So this is what I want to do this season: breath deep, watch closely and lend a hand when I see a need.

A

wiry, toe-headed child, Jackson Nickolet looks like a boy that doesn’t stop — a boy that has burnt every excess pound of flesh in ceaseless motion.

Motion is where Nickolet, at 13, excels. He’s been all over the province this past summer racing his 85cc Kawasaki and winning while doing it. He now has two trophies that he smiles proudly when he shows them off — a foot and a half tall shiny cup with curlicues for handles, for winning the points championship for Northern B.C. and a glass plaque with his name etched in the surface along with his second place showing in the points championship in B.C. It was Nickolet’s first season on an 85cc bike; last year he rode 65cc bikes in his rookie season — and Nickolet had trouble starting the season.

“At the beginning I wasn’t that good, but as I raced more I got better. I practiced a little more each week and

practiced certain parts of the track to get better. I went to a few more races and started to win more,” Nickolet said.

With eight races over the course of the season, he had plenty of time to get a bit more serious during the season, which he did after seeing his results. After his first win of the season in Quesnel and finding he was fifth in the province on the B.C.M.A. website standings, Nickolet saw he had a chance of making something of the season and doubled his effort.

“I went faster and that’s when I started focusing on certain parts of the track, like the corners, going faster into them and coming faster out of them and taking

bigger jumps and in the whips,” Nickolet said.

The whips, also referred to as a ‘rhythm section,’ are comprised of small jumps and bumps on a section of track that require riders to time their jumps to make sure they make it through smoothly, not landing flat, straddling a jump or smashing into the face of one of the small jumps.

“The big whips, it’s hard to go fast over them, but I just went fast over them once and it didn’t scare me anymore,” Nickolet said.

After his extra practices and newly-gained confidence in the

rhythm section, Nickolet found himself sitting in first place by fifty points, but after a Terrace race, which he missed, the championship tightened up.

“It got tight after that, so I just had to win two more races to win and I won those,” he said.

With those too wins, Nickolet was the champion of the B.C.M.A. Northern Series, sitting 40 points ahead of his nearest competitor, a race win nets the winner 25 points. But there was a surprise still to come.

After winning the Northern Series, Jackson also took second overall on points.

“That was a surprise,” he said.

For the second place overall, Nickolet received a glass plaque to put beside his trophy.

It’s no wonder Nickolet has managed to win his class in his second year of racing; he’s been doing it a long time, seven year to be exact, since he was a wee little five year-oldP. see PAGE A18

Short on fill Strong second isn’t enough to save ‘Roos

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The 'Roos were an hour south last weekend trying to pick up some points against the Williams Lake Stampeders, but couldn't fill in the hole their first period performance landed them in.

The 'Roos faced an uphill battle going into the game, Williams Lake sitting above the 'Roos on the Eastern Division standings, at the very top in the division.

The 'Roos dropped precipitously in the first, allowing the Stampeders to run all over them with five unanswered goals.

At 4:26 into the first, the Stampeders opened up the scoring, with Nathan Zurak putting it past 'Roos netminder Josh Levesque. Not half a minute later, the Stampeders doubled up when Stuart Sasges managed to squeeze the puck past Levesque.

A power play half way through the period gave the Stampeders another chance and they jumped at it, with Matt Lees netting their third.

Again, the Stampeders doubled up on their points, with Tyler Fuller taking advantage of the momentum to bring the Stampeders up to four.

Then, with just over two minutes left in the first, Jaki Sanda poured salt on the 'Roos wound with a final, fifth goal in the first.

The Stampeders finished better in the first than the 'Roos, managing a goal on nearly every second shot on goal, with the team recording 11 shots on net, compared to the 'Roos 16. The 'Roos, however, weren't able to make their shots count in the first twenty minutes.

The second was a different story.

The 'Roos came out of the dressing room with renewed vigour, knowing how much they had to accomplish to move the game into the win column.

A minute into the period they started a comeback roll. Joel Boyetchko was the first 'Roo to score in the game opening the gates for others.

Twenty seconds later the Stampeders Andrew Fisher responded with a goal for the Stampeders to keep them five in front, which didn't last for long.

At 4:27 Curtis Gassoff reeled in the Stampeders a bit with a goal. Three minutes later Justin Fulton did his part in the comeback effort. Then, five minutes later, Nick Tomassetti joined in on the fun, bringing the 'Roos to within two points of the Stampeders.

The magic of the second wore off in the third, closing the doors on 'Roos scorers again despite a flurry of action by the 'Roos offense, including ringing three shots off the pipes.

Neither team managed to finish through nineteen minutes of play in the third. With minutes left, the 'Roos tried to break out of the doldrums by pulling their goalie, but only ended up giving a point up to Stampeders with a minute left of the game.

Their seventh goal was the final nail inn the 'Roos’ coffin, cementing the score at 7-4.

The 'Roos will be on the road again this weekend in Lac La Hache to take on the Tomahawks.

Riding high in Moto-X from A16 He hasn’t stuck only to the 85cc bike he won the championship on, Nickolet, like most motorsport enthusiasts, had hungered for more power, which he satiated with a bored out version of his 85cc bike. The extra 16 cubic centimetres gave Nickolet a little more fun until it blew up Nickolet’s a Kawasaki man now, through and through, after his winning season in the saddle of a little green bike.

“I think I’ll always ride Kawasaki,” he said.

He’s has learned a lot about his ride over the course of the season and four rebuilds.

“We have to take it apart when it blows up and I always have to help,” he said.

All those rebuilds, along with the endless traveling, have required a community around him. Nickolet traveled in a pack of riders from Quesnel to help offset costs and offer aid when the unforeseen happened on the track. One of the perks of the group Nickolet

fondly remembers is the breakfast parents would cook for the packs of children moving from race to race.

For those wonderful breakfasts and their help in putting together a winning season for him, Nickolet has a thankful heart.

“I would like to thank Fireside mechanical and Iris and my friends and family for helping me with my bike when it breaks down,” he said.

Next year, if he manages to grow a bit more, Nickolet will move up a class, onto the 250F that he already has. He’s excited for the change, but not everyone shares his enthusiasm.

“His parents are nervous,” his mother said.

“That’s just you,” he responded.

“Dad’s excited.”

Bear edges Riverman as Serenity bounces back against a black and Blue Collar

espite a "Heavens to Murgatroyd” like final minute, Bear managed to finally win a game versus the Chevy crew in a 2-1 squeaker that left most players shaking their heads in disbelief. Opening the scoring for GM after a bounce reminiscent of Front Street in April, was Ken (Pavel) McMillan who displayed his Bure like speed all morning.

Knowing their limits, but failing to play within them was BCS who outdid themselves in the scoring department with six, but unfortunately giving up 10 will only win you football games.

The Berry Patch We pack up a lunch and off we go, Looking for berries while walking real slow, We carry pails and large buckets too, Hoping to fill them before we are through, The berries are ready, all nice and ripe, There’s stains on your hands, must bring a wipe, These pies will be tasty and done to a tee, For all of these berries we have picked free.

We picked for awhile and then ate our lunch, Then picked more berries, bunch after bunch.

We filled all the pails, and even each pot, This day is so warm that we’re all getting hot.

We’ll pack up the car and travel back home, We have enough berries, no more will we roam.

We’ll clean and wash them and put them in pies, For winter is coming and we’re going to be wise.

We picked all these berries, it’s really good food, We picked enough to feed the whole brood.

These berries are tasty and good for our health, When buying groceries it helps with the wealth.

I’m glad for these berries we picked in the heat, In the cold winter months this food’s hard to beat.

So every year we’ll gather out in that patch, For berries like these are such a good catch. ~ Elaine Couldwell

The Garden We went to the greenhouse, the produce was unreal, They were placed upon the shelves, their perfection to reveal.

You could come at any time and choose the best of everything, There were vegetables and flowers, and baskets on a string.

Plants were planted in their planters, all lined up in a row, It made a person wonder how they could even grow.

You go there with enthusiasm and an open mind, To see what different flowers you actually could find.

There were tall ones, even short ones, waiting to be bought, In your mind you must consider, have I got the perfect spot?

The garden plot is ready, the weather’s all in order, I need to buy a little plant to make a garden border.

Once that I have mastered my garden to a tee, I hope that it will be a sight for each of you to see.

When all the plants are out in bloom, it is a lovely sight, It makes me feel down in my heart, for once I’ve done it right.

He comes with the clouds of Heaven, and the son of man will be standing in the midst of candlesticks to the count of seven.

I like to see the progress from my window everyday, He will be wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest, The bees are in the flowers as well as in the hay.

His hair and his head will be white as snow-let me tell you the rest.

So now that all the work is done and summer’s finally here, His eyes shall be bright just like flames of fire, I take advantage of the blooms as winter’s coming near.

And his feet will be as bright as bronze refined in a furnace this is our sire.

His voice will thunder like mighty ocean waves, ~ Elaine Couldwell and he will hold seven stars in his right hand Oh our love he craves.

A sharp two-edged sword will come from his mouth, and his face will be as bright as the sun in east, west, north and south.

The people of God will have seals placed on their forehead, and an earthquake - greater than ever in the earth’s history-this I have read.

The seven angels will dump bowls of plague over the earth, and hail stones weighing seventy-five pounds will drop over the people-this is not a mirth.

Then Heaven will open and a white horse will be standing there, and the one sitting on the horse will be named Faithful and Truethese good words I shall share with you. ~ Debbie C Rosenau

Five years have passed since this wonderful lady was so suddenly taken from us. The loss of this loving wife, mother, sister, and dear friend left a void in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

It is said there is a reason for such things and that with time comes healing. However, neither time nor reason has changed the way we feel. There is heartache behind our smiles, and it seems almost impossible to count how many times we’ve cried.

Stories from the woods

Tales told as all Cariboo creatures look forward to Christmas

S

ummer finishes early in the Cariboo and winter can come close on its heels, covering the hills, valleys and rivers with her soft coat of white.

Now, when winter comes many animals either sleep it out or head for warmer climes; the old bears snuggle into warm caves to wait it out, while snow birds fly their way to Florida or Arizona to bask in the hot sun while their friends freeze up in the North.

Some animals, however, stay alert for the duration of winter, for some it’s their job. Further north, out of the Cariboo, past Fort Nelson and Whitehorse, over the Baffin Islands and three-quarters submerged icebergs, the reindeer take their job quite seriously, going through winter training to keep their wits and reactions quick lest the big man need their special skills at a moments notice (everyone up there has heard of Rudolph and knows there’s a chance they can be called up to haul that big red sleigh

without even a little bit of forewarning.)

The reindeer aren’t the only ones looking forward to Christmas, however. The rabbits and foxes change colour with the season, to blend in with winter’s soft coat.

The deer and the moose use their long, skinny legs to frolic through the soft blankets of snow and use their antlers to rifle through to find the goodies hidden under pillows of white.

The bears and the snow birds have no idea what their missing, in the general consensus of the animals who stay up north for winter.

Of course, the snowbirds think the same thing, as they watch the news about flurries and storms and power outages in their erstwhile home and the bears just aren’t interested, what with the lack of berries in winter; so the rabbits and the foxes, the deer and the chickadees have it all to themselves.

In clearings in the forest the animals who stay gather to tell stories and share drinks and snacks

found under the snow.

Usually as the sun starts to droop and it’s warming rays lose their strength from fighting the cold for too long, the animals will begin to congregate in known clearings.

The rabbits are always there first, chattering away with words so fast the deer and foxes will have to listen closely, or ask the rabbits to repeat themselves, this time slowly, but the foxes show up a little later, with the deer stroll in as the sun sinks beneath the horizon.

The birds join too, but they flit in and out at will, sometimes showing up before even the rabbits and sometimes not at all, because they prefer to twitter at each other while turning cartwheels and somersaults in the air. The ravens and crows rarely come, but when they do they come in huge flocks and tend to take over the gatherings. The moose are always last, though. When the animals can barely see outside the small clearings and they’re peering at each other giggling and telling stories that most of

them have heard at least once so everyone has to put their own twist on the thing, the antlers of the moose can be seen against the last remains of the sunset.

If there’s a small pause in the conversation, though it’s seldom that the animals all fall silent it does happen, the animals can hear the shoulders of the moose brush against the pines and the spruce trees.

And when the moose finally arrives, most of the animals remain silent, except the chickadees and the rabbits because they never fall silent.

The moose always seems to hear the newest stories and have the best taletelling voices which help the animals forget the cold and the darkness and be transported into the world of the story.

The moose won’t tell you where they get their stories, but if you follow a moose around long enough you’ll see them meet their northern brethren, who meet with their northern brethren, who meet with theirs, upwards

to the very heart of the tale – the reindeers. Their connections to the big man himself become tales of their adventures towing the sleigh across skies, a feeling only the chickadees even have a passing idea of what it might feel like.

The moose will come into the gathering and stand tall above the rest of the animals as all but the twitters and ultra-fast speech of the rabbits fade, and the other animals will nudge the rabbits until they quite down, but nothing can be done about the chickadees because they won’t quiet down until the moose are deep into the story and they’ve fetched up on some tree branch or other to listen.

Finally, quietly, as the crux of the story unfolds, the animals travel higher and further than the chickadees have ever flown.

Last year, as the animals gathered in their fields and gossiped about who went where for the holidays and how grouchy one bear was when

woken from his slumber (‘he nearly tore my head off’ on rabbit proclaimed) a moose arrived. He came before the setting sun crowned his antlers causing even the rabbits and the chickadees to go quiet as everyone was curious about what would bring a moose into the gathering so early in the night.

“I’ve been told, from very reliable sources, there’s been some serious trouble up in the north this year.”

The animals silence deepened at the proclamation, coming as it did from the bass voice of a creature half again as tall as the second tallest animal in the gathering.

Then the gathering exploded with voices asking all manner of questions in all manner of voices, from the hyper rabbit voices to the sly fox voices, but the question that wove through it all was: ‘will there be a Christmas?”

“Quiet,” said the moose.

“Let me tell you the story.”

Volunteering

Getting kids to volunteer Volunteering is a great way for people to give back to their communities. It’s also a great way for parents to instill character in their children.

When kids volunteer, they learn lessons about responsibility while also learning how enjoyable it can be to help the less fortunate. Kids who volunteer early in life are more likely to do so throughout their lives, and that lifetime of service can be invaluable. The right volunteering opportunity for a child often depends on the child’s age, as some opportunities are better suited to younger children while others are tailor-made for teenagers. The following are a few age-appropriate ideas that can help get kids excited about volunteering and giving back to their neighborhoods.

Elementary school children When kids reach elementary school, parents should introduce them to volunteering.

Volunteering activities for school-aged kids should be simple, such as accompanying their parents to food banks where kids can help feed the homeless and less fortunate.

Kids with grandparents living in assisted living facilities can read to residents at the facility or bring

Encourage such ideas, and expect kids to want to exercise some independence when they reach middle school.

High school students High school students tend to have busy schedules, but those who have been volunteering since childhood will likely find a way to continue doing so. Teenagers tend to have more specific interests than younger children, and parents can encourage teens to incorporate those interests into their volunteering. For example, kids who love sports might be able to work with the local sports and recreation center to coach younger athletes. Or kids who excel in the classroom can tutor younger students.

Volunteering can look good on a high school student’s resume when the time comes to apply for college, but parents should be careful that their high school-aged children don’t stretch themselves too thin with extracurricular activities. Encourage volunteering but not at the expense of schoolwork.

Many children embrace volunteering, especially when given the chance to choose how they want to give back to their communities and the less fortunate.

Hazelnut Breakfast Slices Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 to 30 minutes Serves: 10 ¾ cup (180mL) all purpose flour ¾ cup (180mL) whole-wheat flour ¼ tsp (1mL) baking soda

¼ tsp (1mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2mL) ground cinnamon ¼ cup (60mL) sugar ¼ cup (60mL) melted butter or non-hydrogenated margarine ¾ cup (180mL) unsweetened applesauce 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup (250mL) trail mix ½ cup (125mL) hazelnut spread Pre-heat oven to 350°F (180°c).

Coat an 8x8-baking pan with cooking spray In a large bowl, whisk together flours, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. In another bowl,

whisk together sugar, butter or non-hydrogenated margarine, applesauce and egg. Add applesauce mixture to flour mixture and mix just to combine. Gently fold in trail mix and spoon into baking pan.

Smooth the surface.

Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Let cool for 15 minutes and turn out onto a cutting board.

Let them cool completely.

When cool, cut into 10 bars.

Spread the top of each bar with a little hazelnut spread and pair with a glass of milk and a bowl of fruit for a delicious breakfast.

“It is possible with the availability of smaller sizes of foods and beverages. Companies such as Coca-Cola offer mini-cans that are 100 calories or less per serving.”

Share the bounty Finally, be the host with the least, the least leftovers that is.

Offer your guests take away containers for the extra servings, so they can enjoy the delicious meal the next day.
