Langford will allow backyard poultry and rabbits on certain size lots in the city.

Residents on land greater than 550 square metres but less than 4,000 square metres will be able to keep up to four chickens, ducks, pigeons or rabbits in fenced enclosures council decided unanimously Nov. 5. For every 220 square metres over the minimum one more bird will be allowed.

Colwood is taking the first steps to develop its own backyard hens bylaw. At a Planning and Land Use Committee meeting Nov. 6 committee passed a motion to recommend to council that staff put together some options to “liberalize rules concerning the keeping of poultry in residential areas.”

The committee also recommended the city ask the public what it thinks of loosening up the rules around having backyard poultry.

“There’s been some interest in the community and some councillors have been approached,” city planner Iain Bourhill said.

Artist willing to work for socks News staff

Michael Ryan Pomeroy struggled with drug addition for years, even kicking the habit for a while.

During his sobriety he travelled to Mexico and built homes for children. “He was turning his life around.

He had been clean for five years and then he went back (to drugs),� said his brother Shawn Pomeroy. “When Mike died he was 27.�

Pomeroy found his brother dead in their mother’s Langford home four years ago, after an overdose. “I want to raise awareness for addiction, it’s still a little stigmatized,� Pomeroy said. “Addiction has no discrimination, it affects ■Nov. 19 to doctors, law25 is National yers, anestheAddiction siologists and Awareness plumbers.�

Pomeroy also hopes local businesses will contribute items for his fundraiser.

Anyone dropping of a donation at the gallery will be entered in a raffle to win one of Pomeroy’s paintings.

Silent auction for struggling family Friends of A.J. Wakeling’s family will host a silent auction and bake sale fundraiser in the Dunsmuir middle school gym on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 2 to 7 p.m.

Wakeling is the 13-year-old who died in hospital just after 8 p.m., Oct. 25, two days after being struck by a pickup truck near on Sooke Road.

One painting hanging in the gallery is off the market and will be donated to Cedars Residential Treatment Program in Cobble Hill.

It’s titled “Michael Ryan� after Pomeroy’s brother.

“Hopefully is makes a dark wall a bit brighter,� Pomeroy said,.

Prints of the painting will also be sold and he will donate a portion of those sales to Our Place.

Esquimalt man faces assault, murder charges Victim reportedly Langford man The man charged in the Nov. 9 murder and aggravated assault in Esquimalt has a long history of violence.

Around 9 p.m. last Friday, Victoria police arrived at an apartment building in the 600-block of Grenville

Ave. to a chaotic scene, where “one man (was) unresponsive and suffering from severe injuries,� said Const.

Mike Russell. “Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took the man to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.�

A second man was also injured but is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Police would not confirm the identity of the deceased, but media reports identify him as Clifford Roy Antonsen, 57, of Langford.

Daryle Wayne Johnson, 49, appeared in court on Tuesday to face charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges.

Johnson has been convicted of multiple assaults dating back to 2007, and he has pled guilty to

Karl Kavanaugh’s death left a hole in the organization, says Gayle Ireland, co-ordinator for the Goldstream Food Bank.

“Karl was my right arm,” Ireland said. “He was loyal he was true, he was incredibly hard working and dutiful. He carried every task through to the bitter end.”

A founder of the annual Fleet Dive Unit (Pacific) Turkey Run, the food bank volunteer was devoted to Legion work.

“He really looked forward to (the Turkey Run),”

said Doug Woods, who volunteered alongside Kavanaugh for about nine years. “He thought it was great from the military point of view because he was ex military.”

Cancer claimed his life in February, but friends remember him fondly at the food bank.

“Everything important in this Legion was important to Karl. People were important to Karl,” said food bank volunteer Marie Ball who knew Kavanaugh more than 50 years. “He came and helped with Christmas in 1999 … and he never left.”

Dive unit offers trophies to top sponsors Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Despite his death, Karl Kavanaugh is the heart of the event he concocted with cohort Navy Lieutenant Walter Dubeau three years ago.

“One of the founders of the Turkey Run was a veteran of the Legion, Karl Kavanaugh,” Dubeau said. “This year the run is dedicated to Karl. He died in February of cancer.”

Dubeau, is training officer at the Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific) based in Colwood and met Kavanaugh volunteering at the West Shore food bank. Together they cooked up the plan to add meat to the season.

“The idea behind it was to get a turkey on every table,” Dubeau said. They’ve done it both previous years with grocery gift cards through the Christmas Hampers.

The first year they topped $12,000, reaching beyond $17,000 in the second annual run last year.

“This year our goal is $15,000. I want to make this achievable so people don’t get discouraged,” Dubeau said. The funds were raised primarily through corporate donations, where staggering funds earn a hefty diver helmet trophy.

“The Goldstream Food Bank is 100 per cent volunteer. That’s why we’re doing what we’re doing, volunteering our time,” he said. Food bank volunteers work hand in hand with the West Shore Christ-

mas Hamper Fund Society to make about 600 hampers each year.

“We think numbers are up, the need is up in the community so we bumped the number up to 650,” said hamper co-ordinator Gayle Ireland.

Saturday, Dec. 1 starting at 9 a.m. search out the bobbing pack of runners to find some wearing bits of the specialized equipment the divers use in everyday work.

Altogether 50 to 70 people will take part, volunteering their time that day.

“Everybody at some point runs in the relay,” Dubeau said.

at the front of the pack followed by the bomb truck leading the pack of runners. Santa and a diver in a dive boat followed by MPs take up the rear of the parade.

They run from the unit on Wilferr to Belmont Park then Sooke Road to Jacklin Road, up to Goldstream Avenue then Peatt Road to Millstream Road. They travel back from Millstream Village along Veterans Memorial Parkway to WestShore Town Centre a couple of times before heading back where they started.

“We’re definitely asking the traffic to be patient with us,” Dubeau said.

They’ll take donations along the way and at various stops. The plan is to finish around 4 p.m. then head to Six Mile Pub for a silent auction, where items are up for bid between 4 and 6 p.m.

“The month of November we do a bit of a drive and businesses give us prizes for the silent auction,” he said.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2011, a male was punched several times in the face and head following an altercation outside of the Strathcona Hotel at Douglas and Courtney streets.

The suspect delivered several punches to the victim while the victim was being held by door staff at the corner across from the bar.

The victim sustained significant injuries as a result of the blows to the head.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5’9”, 185 lbs, with short dark hair and a clean shaven face. He wore a backwards black baseball hat with a white symbol, a black T-shirt, silver wrist watch, dark blue jeans and black runners. He was in the company of a second male.

Almost every year after the holiday season Cheryl Laidlaw gains a little food baby.

Last year she was able to maintain her weight even while vacationing in Jamaica. She credits her participation in the Holiday Hold ‘em challenge.

“I have no willpower. Doing this challenge make me forced to have will power,” said the View Royal resident.

Every year she travels to somewhere warm for the holidays with her husband, this year it’s Mexico.

“I come back and look like I am three months pregnant,” Laidlaw said. “The challenge keeps me focused and on track.

Usually I gain a minimum of five pounds but it’s usually seven to 10 pounds.

“The saying of ‘through the lips and to the hips’ is so true,” Laidlaw said. “My God, if I can get through another holiday without having a (food) baby, it’ll make all the difference.”

The Holiday Hold ‘Em begins now and runs until the end of January. A mid-contest weigh-in is held in December.

Each time a participant maintains or loses weight, they can enter their name in for a draw.

This year’s prizes include spa prizes, massage gift certificates, personal training sessions and a VIBE machine valued at $1,500.

“Christmas is an emotionally charged and indulgent time,” said Dr. Stefan Rabnett, who practises traditional Chinese medicine, at Back to Back Chiropractic.

Rabnett hopes to see people use the challenge to become more self aware about their bodies and decisions during the holidays.

“Hydration is incredibly important,” Rabnett said. “People can have something indulgent and then have a glass of water.”

The Holiday Hold ‘em is free and open to anyone. The first set of weigh-ins are on Nov. 15, 16 and 17.

Victoria centre of political map Victoria, one of three federal ridings contesting a byelection on Nov. 26, has gone strongly NDP in the past two elections, with popular former city councillor Denise Savoie on the ballot.

But Savoie took early retirement for health reasons and the race to replace her appears wide open, with a collection of relative political neophytes up for election.

The NDP is no doubt anxious to maintain its grip on opposition status, so it’s no surprise that federal leader Thomas Mulcair dropped by this week to lend his support to candidate Murray Rankin.

Not to be outdone, the Liberals sent interim leader Bob Rae to Victoria to help candidate Paul Summerville, while the Conservatives had Treasury Board president and former Conservative health minister Tony Clement knock on doors with candidate Dale Gann.

Green Party candidate Donald Galloway had his federal leader, Saanich and the Islands MP Elizabeth May, close at hand for a series of announcements and appearances as well, but she had far less distance to travel than her fellow members of parliament, who hail from Ontario or Quebec.

Does the appearance of all this star power really make a difference in voters’ minds?

Candidates and other party faithful get fired up when their leaders come to town, but they’re already converted.

The big question is, does the leaders’ presence interest the disinterested?

Unlike a general election, the future direction of the country does not hinge on the results of this byelection and those in Calgary and Durham, Ont. With that in mind, last year’s voter turnout of 68 per cent in Victoria – seven points higher than the national mark – will be difficult to beat.

Then again, the appearance of the party leaders, and the media circus surrounding them, may be an indication that something important is happening. And that curiosity may be enough to encourage people who wouldn’t otherwise pay attention to find out more about their candidates and maybe even cast a ballot.

Let’s hope.

LETTERS Ferries needs competition, privatizing Re: Trying to reimagine B.C. Ferries (News, Nov. 9) To my mind, the solution to the problems at B.C. Ferries is to introduce some competition.

First, the ferry terminals should be given to a new Crown corporation and run like airports, acting as landing/ departure areas for multiple carriers.

Second, the B.C. Ferries fleet should be privatized, just as Air Canada was. Together these changes would enable other carriers, such as Seaspan or Lady Rose Marine Services, to enter the passenger market and provide muchneeded competition, just as Westjet does for the airline industry.

Bridges are more than just a potential transportation solution. They pose huge land-use and community issues.

I have seriously questioned “bridges” being put forward for consideration in a very generalized way in the current consultation being conducted by the province. Each route has its specific characteristics, context and mix of utilization.

The current consultation would be much more useful if it was focused

upon generating constructive discussion on a route-by-route basis, based upon full information about all factors to be considered. I would not presume to comment on the particular circumstances and potential options for the Gabriola ferry route, as I do not have a sufficient level of understanding of the factors that apply to this route.

Columnist, friends need a reality check Re: These pets are certainly not the cuddly kind (Column, Nov. 9) Shame on Ms. Lavin for writing such a self-centred column and even more so on the News for publishing such drivel.

Poor Ms. Lavin, she and her friends actually have to wait while some old pensioner must count her pennies to buy some food with her meagre pension, whilst “others” must wait behind with their wads of bills waiting to buy all manner of luxury food.

And oh, the pain of having to put up with being around someone in an electric wheelchair. That person must live in it day in and day out – think about that.

And the little old lady who is with her husband? How wonderful that he will support her and help her with the groceries – which are horribly heavy for the elderly. Good for him for helping; at least someone is willing to.

When was the last time you offered help to such a person getting their cart to their car? Or is it just easier to complain about them getting in your way?

Listen to yourself. You have money, you have your health, you have all manner of blessings. And as a further blessing, you and your spoiled friends

are given the opportunity to be compassionate and caring. And you wasted that opportunity.

Take a walk in those moccasins just for one mile.

You need the reality check.

Count your blessings instead of pet peeves Re: These pets are not the cuddly kind (Column, Nov. 9) While I have no doubt Laura Lavin was attempting some humour with this piece, I just found it disturbing. I am sure that most of us can identify with some of the peeves listed, however, I think overall it was rather selfabsorbed to focus on all of these annoyances.

That “old lady who’s dragging her old man around” may have no choice – perhaps her husband is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and can’t be left alone. And what about the old people that pay with pennies? Did you ever think that perhaps they had to?

With respect to traffic complaints, we have probably all been guilty of each of those from time to time.

Hopefully we learn from our errors but what if we don’t? Is life really going to end if someone is going slow in the fast lane?

Instead of counting our

peeves and annoyances why not try counting our blessings. Show a little patience and understanding for others. Your life will be much richer for it and you will find those petty annoyances will rapidly disappear.

Impatient pet peevers need compassion Re: These pets are not the cuddly kind (Column, Nov. 9) I share several of Ms. Lavin’s pet peeves regarding supermarkets. But those people who object to “the old lady who’s dragging her old man around with her” – saying the man doesn’t know what he’s doing and doesn’t want to be there – need to remember firstly it isn’t all about them, and secondly, they could develop some compassion.

That elderly lady might just be the elderly gentleman’s sole caregiver. He might be suffering from Alzheimer’s and she can’t leave him on his own at home.

As much as she would prefer to have some time to herself, she has no choice but to bring him with her and maybe at some level he’s thinking of other places he would rather be.

Poppy pinning a heartfelt gesture Because we just celebrated Remembrance Day, I felt it was important to mention that along Shelbourne Street, near the entrance to the Mount Doug Park, people have begun to pin poppies on the trunks of the trees.

They do this because originally, these trees were planted to mark the loss of a soldier from Victoria during the First World War who died in service. I think it is an absolutely wonderful and thoughtful way for Victorians to personally remember those from our beautiful city who we lost.

Job fair highlights tough market

When GT Hiring Solutions announced on Facebook, Twitter and its blog that it was hosting a one-day job fair on Nov. 8, they generated immediate interest and more than 300 pre-registrations.

That was only the tip of the iceberg. When it opened its doors at 10 a.m. that morning, nearly twice as many people had already lined Douglas Street and wrapped around the corner onto Johnson Street – all of them looking for work.

The people spanned the spectrum of Victoria’s population: men and women of all ages, educational levels, experience and backgrounds.

Employers included a number of restaurant chains, retail stores, construction companies, the Victoria Marriott hotel and Beacon Home Care.

Factors for this level of interest are varied, said GT Hiring manager Lindsay McLaughlin, one of the fair’s organizers.

“Victoria obviously has always had a lot of government jobs and they’ve imposed a hiring freeze, so that’s had an effect. As well, we

Unemployment in Greater Victoria is generally lower than other urban areas in B.C., hovering around 5.4 per cent this year, which is lower than the 6.2 per cent unemployment rate seen in 2011, accord-

McLaughlin’s firm was contracted by the provincial Ministry of Social Development in April as a WorkBC Employment Service Centre, to help people overcome hurdles when looking for work.

“There are jobs out there, but it’s important to get out and network,” she said. “In some ways it’s a bit of

a hidden job market and you have to work harder here to find a job.”

That’s been the case for 28-yearold Heather Brass. She’s been working, but has been “underemployed” for nearly two years. She had worked for both the provincial and federal governments, and since that work evaporated, she’s found it hard to find new employers. “There’s not a lot of jobs out there and a lot of competition,” she said while waiting in line for the fair.

Barb Anderson has been out of work for a year after the bank she worked at cut back staff. She went to Camosun College to upgrade her skills and at age 53 found herself in a class of 80 other students. “All of those people are out here now, looking for the same kind of work I want,” she said. “I’m competing with all of them as well as all the others in classes before and since.”

Erin McFadyen, 18, said he has only managed to find part-time weekend work despite a four-month search. “Part-time doesn’t pay the bills,” he said.

The Coalition to End Homelessness is challenging people to try living in the cold for a day and hoping the experience will be enlightening.

“We’re asking people to turn their heat off so they can better understand the hardships of those that live on the street or in homes

without heat,” said Andrew WynnWilliams, executive director of the Coalition.

Between November and March last winter, people were turned away from a Victoria emergency shelter more than 1,500 times.

Participants in the challenge are asked to turn off the thermostat for 24 hours staring 9 a.m. Dec. 7.

Bradley is describing himself, or the man he once was to be more accurate.

After multiple jail terms, 18 years as a heroin addict and many more years as an alcoholic, Bradley lays out the stories in his new book, Connection to Freedom, in the hopes those who read it take a different journey through life than he did.

“We have tried to emphasize how students (should) not follow the path that we followed.

We use our life stories as an example,” he said. “What we want to do is put it into the library and various institutions as a resource. Believe me, you won’t get a more real life or valuable resource than from the people who have lived these experiences.”

The collection of personal short stories, poems and experiences written by prisoners, ex-prisoners, homeless, addicts and more are aimed at youth, high school students, law and criminal justice students in secondary and post-secondary schools, with an eye on gener-

ating compassion and an open mind to the reality of life.

“Either you have the real truth or you have nonsense – I am not putting out a comic book here,” Bradley said.

“There is some stuff in there that is really informative, because nothing has been spared.”

Aneil Perwal met Bradley in 2008 after 17 years addicted to crack cocaine. Once a promising athlete and student, Perwal fell into good money early, earning more than $200,000 a year working with drug dealers and living a lavish lifestyle.

One day he woke up after a binge and his girlfriend had left him, he had no money, no cable and no food in his fridge. He had nothing left.

“I thought I could handle it. I ended up being a money man with the drug dealers and ended up trying the product,” the Spectrum secondary graduate said. “My ego was out of check, I thought I was better than everyone else.”

Perwal went through drug rehab seven times before he broke free from the chains of addiction. His story is one of many in Bradley’s collection.

“I grew up in a Christian family and I broke my parents heart like (drugs) broke many parents’ hearts,” Perwal said. “If

you are a lawyer or a gardener, if you get into the drugs nothing good happens. It is called dope for a reason.”

He hopes his story speaks to promising young high school students who might be tracing the path he once walked.

“I have come a long way but there is still a long way to go.

I was a guy that in everyone’s eyes was going to make it. I am still going to make it, but I have gotten through a lot of trials and tribulations.”

Like Perwal, Bradley believes stories from people who have “hit rock bottom” may make people think twice about their path and may provide another perspective from those who have made some of the wrong choices he made.

“I was on heroin for 18 years, with Aneil being on crack for 17 years. We have an obvious connection in our understanding of each other’s challenges and victories,” Bradley said.

“I think that is why I am able to help people, because I am not a book-learned counsellor … I have been on the street, I have been in jail and I have lost this and that. I have a connection.”

B.C. trucking industry offers wide choice of careers Job seekers are in luck when it comes to the commercial road transportation industry in British Columbia. Trucking companies throughout B.C. require professional drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and operations staff right now, which means that job seekers with experience and/or training may find work within their preferred region.

For those considering training prior to joining the workforce, demand for skilled workers in the industry is likely to grow – to 2020 and beyond.

There are a number of reasons for this. For truck drivers, the industry is facing a North America-wide shortage because most are 45 years of age or older and nearing retirement (in fact, in Canada, according to a report by the Canada Trucking Human Resources Council, 58 per cent of long-haul truck drivers fall in this age range). Similar shortages exist for other jobs, including diesel engine and heavy duty mechanics.

Aside from worker shortages, economic growth in the Asia-Pacific Gateway is also driving demand for workers in transportation. This applies not only to companies in the Lower Mainland, but in other regions as well, since the Asia-Pacific “Gateway” is actually made up of an integrated supply chain of airports, seaports, rail and road connections, and border crossings, from Prince Rupert to Surrey, with links supplied by trucking.

Today’s trucking industry is an exciting place to be. Equipment in many companies is state-of-the-art, meaning increased comfort and ease for drivers and opportunities for mechanics to work with technologically advanced systems, keeping both their skills and interest engaged. Dispatch relies on sophis-

ticated tracking and routing systems. Others on the operations side also use information technology of many kinds to deal with everything from licences and permits to customer services, accounting, sales and marketing.

And, people joining the industry have many career choices. Drivers, for example, may work close to home as pick-up and delivery or short-haul drivers. Those who like the idea of travelling across Canada or North America can become long-haul drivers for an employer or work as owner-operators.

Drivers may haul consumer goods, fuel, logs, heavy-duty equipment, livestock – most of what we purchase or consume spent some time on the road with a commercial truck!

“If you are the sort of person who doesn’t like to sit still and the thought of being ‘stuck’ behind a desk all day makes you shudder, then driving might be a perfect career,” suggests Jennifer Hawes, from Victoria’s ColdStar Freight Systems.

Of course, the job isn’t simply about driving.

“I believe my drivers like the independence that they have during a typical workday. In addition, I know that they enjoy being the ‘eyes’ and ‘ears’ of the company – after all, it is these drivers that are on the loading docks or in the stores, talking to our customers everyday,” Hawes says. “Being our first line of defence helps us with our customer service and keeps the drivers connected to the company, especially if they can be involved in problem solving.”

Today 17-year-old Justin Plunkett returns from his first bucket-list trip, the island of Maui.

On Christmas Eve 2010 the Spectrum student was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. He finished treatment, that included chemotherapy, in September 2011. The Saanich teen earned an allclear from doctors.

On Oct. 30 he wasn’t feeling well and doctors did an scan that determined his cancer returned. He was airlifted to Vancouver where it was confirmed.

Justin Plunkett “He was essentially given three months to live,” said aunt Andrea Rempel.

“We all just rallied together, family and friends. It’s just really taken us all for a loop.”

The trip this week was one offered by Make a Wish, it was his ‘cancer survivor’ wish to celebration one year of remission. With the new diagnosis, the trip took a twist. It became part of his bucket list.

“He’s fulfilling a lot of little things right now,” Rempel said. “He’s 17 no 17 year old has a bucket list … Pretty much whatever comes across the plate we are trying to make happen.”

He spent time on an ATV, went parasailing, had a beachside massage and learned luau drumming.

Rempel recalls bottle drives were a successful fundraiser when Plunkett fought his first battle with cancer. The first fundraiser to keep the list fulfilled as long as possible is a Nov. 17 bottle drive at 439 Davida St. in Saanich from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Twisting the historical tales of sex trade, travellers and the Victoria Plaza Hotel, three Victoria feminists created the show Ghosts of the Plaza.

The 100-year-old hotel has a vibrant history and if the walls could talk, they’d have plenty of tales to tell.

“It’s a show that’s never been seen before. It’s a comedy and you’ll be entertained,” says Sadie Forbes, co-producer and co-writer. “It’s a working-class feminist perspective on one of Victoria’s most controversial spaces.”

The show includes elements of sex work, strippers, feminism and gangsters.

During the 1920s and 1930s hotels in Victoria hit a bit of financial slump and started doubling as brothels, says Forbes.

Ghosts of the Plaza was first imagined by the show’s co-producer and co-writer Sarah Smith. She worked in the hotel for nine years as a bartender, and studied the hotel’s history in the basement when she could.

Not even the rain can dampen the cameraderie between musicians Doug Cox and BettySoo. The pair chat amiably as they sit waiting for the Salt Spring Island ferry to the Island.

They met two years ago at Acoustic Alaska guitar camp, where they were both teaching. A lucky happenstance for folk music fans – BettySoo lives in Austin, Texas and Cox is a Vancouver Island native.

Endurance tangles with Dragons Tim Collins News staff

When Brett and Blake SmithDaniels, Trevor Kidd and Michael Tessier of the Victoria rock band Endurance travelled to Toronto to appear on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, they were working on the philosophy to set their goals high, and live up to their own expectations.

It’s a philosophy that has guided the boys, aged 12 to 17, throughout their musical career.

It seems to be working, according to Tammy Smith-Daniels, Brett and Blake’s mother.

“Anyone who watched the Oct. 31 Dragon’s Den episode saw a very abbreviated version of what actually happened on the sound stage of the program,” she said.

“The Dragons were sincerely interested in what the boys were doing and especially about the social enterprise aspect of the proposed record label.”

“They listened to several of the band’s original songs and later halted production for a while to bring in the parents for a conversation about the business idea,” said Smith-Daniels.

“The producers were getting a little upset after a while saying, ‘we have to move on and keep to our schedule.’ But the Dragons wanted to hear the boys’ music and hear what they had to say.”

In the end, Endurance got the stamp of approval from all five of the Dragons, something SmithDaniels said is a rare occurrence and a tremendous statement about how impressed the Dragons were with the boys’ pitch.

boys with industry professionals. We’re very confident that things will work out.”

She is only one of the group of parental business advisors helping the boys in their quest to establish their own label.

“Between us we have a fair amount of expertise in business, so it’s only natural that we’d help out,” she said.

Regardless of the final result of negotiations the boys have already achieved a lot of what they wanted to accomplish with their foray into the Dragon’s Den. “They wanted to get some exposure for the band, to raise awareness for their charities and to inspire other young people and show them that anything is possible. Trombone virtuoso slides into Colwood vespers The Church of the Advent will slide trombone virtuoso Nick La Riviere and his quartet into the November slot of Jazz Vespers.

Instrumentalists including Karel Roessingh on piano, Ross MacDonald on bass, and Jon Miller on drums round out the quartet.

Tourism Victoria optimistic Destination B.C. restores dedicated marketing for province Daniel Palmer

It’s been three long years since the provincial government abolished Tourism B.C., the Crown corporation that oversaw tourism marketing for the $13-billion industry.

It was six months before the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the decision perplexed many in the tourism industry, who knew that event offered an opportunity to sell the province as a world-class destination.

Last week, Premier Christy Clark remedied that by creating Destination B.C., a revamped Crown corporation dedicated to tourism marketing.

“It’s an opportunity to get back to where we were; an effective marketing machine as a province,” said Robert Gialloreto, Tourism Victoria president and CEO. Among the potential benefits of the move,

“We have a great working relationship with (Ministry of Tourism) reps in China, and they do great work for us,” he said. “We want to make sure our market presence there is maintained.”

Destination B.C. is the result of a 15-month consultation with the Tourism Industry Association of B.C., which represents the 18,000 tourism businesses across the province.

Lana Denoni, association chair and Victoria businesswoman, said the new corporation has a degree of transparency and account-

ability that didn’t exist under the old Tourism B.C. model.

“The ease of communication with an organization outside of government is certainly much quicker,” she said.

The board of directors will consist of four industry representatives and five business experts from each of the six tourism regions in the province.

“We’re very pleased, and I think the industry is very pleased,” she said.

Destination B.C. will take over marketing operations on April 1, 2013, the same day the provincial sales tax comes back into effect.

For the first year, funding will come from

the Ministry of Tourism, after which funding will come from the existing hotel sales tax.

Gialloreto said the new model will “only be as good as the people who populate it,” and the most important decision will come when the board chooses a CEO. “I’m hopeful to see better regular communication back and forth (with government),” he said. “It (previously) wasn’t as good as we’d all have liked to have seen it.”

Gialloreto hopes Destination B.C. will begin to leverage dollars by creating joint marketing campaigns with regional associations like Tourism Victoria.

“We only have so many dollars. The challenge with Victoria is we have so many different components to what makes this city.

Camosun’s Hilary Graham scored 20 kills and 11 digs in the closely contested game, with the Royals winning the final set 15-11.

The Chargers men’s and women’s volleyball teams are home to the Columbia Bible College Bearcats (Abbotsford) tonight (Nov. 16) and tomorrow at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence.

Tonight’s match ups start with the women at 6 p.m. and men at 8 p.m., with 1 and 3 p.m. starts on Saturday.

Claremont’s field lacrosse academy hosts six visiting schools this week for the annual Spartan Shootout on the turf fields of the University of Victoria.

The showpiece of the tournament is a “Friday Night Lights” style game tonight (Nov. 16) at 7:30 p.m., between Claremont and Bainbridge Island of Washington State.

“We’re going big, American style, like they do with high school football, although in the eastern States there is a big high

school lacrosse scene that does it too,” said Darren Reisig, head of the Claremont program.

“Last year’s (Friday night match) was really well attended and we expect this year’s to be as well, with students promoting ticket sales and PA announcements (in the school).”

The Friday night event is led by a committee of Claremont students and includes a fundraiser for Kidsport Victoria.

Claremont is entering two squads into the seven-team senior division, and two squads into the six team junior division.

Visiting are B.C. schools New Westminster,

Charles Best, Delta and Vancouver College, and from Washington State, Mercer Island and Bainbridge Island.

Two of Claremont’s 2013 grads are committed to play in the NCAA next year, with three or four more expected to sign, Reisig said. Jake Cullen, who was the leading scorer of the 2011 Spartan Shootout, is committed to the University of Albany.

Goalie Stuart Smith is going to Bellarmine University in Kentucky.

Ice dance team Ravie Cunningham and Cedar Bridgewood of the Saanich Skating Club of Victoria won bronze in the pre novice category. It’s only the second year together for 14-year-old Cunning-

ham of Vic High, and 16-year-old Bridgewood of Spectrum Community school, and it’s the second year winning a medal at the BC/YT sectionals.

Last year they were the top ice dance team for the juvenile age group at the BC/YT sectionals. But this year Cunningham and Bridgewood had to make the jump to prenovice, against skaters who are a little older and a little more experienced.

Neither of the oil pipeline projects proposed to cross B.C. should go ahead unless the federal government’s environmental assessment system is restored after Conservative government amendments, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters on a campaign swing to back Murray Rankin’s run in a Nov. 26 by-election, Mulcair said the Conservative government’s proposed exemption of most lakes and rivers from federal environmental scrutiny is added to earlier changes that weaken the process too much for it to be reliable.

Both Mulcair and B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix have strongly opposed Enbridge’s Northern Gateway oil pipeline planned from Alberta to Kitimat. Dix has refrained from making a similar call on Kinder Morgan’s proposal to twin the TransMountain pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby. But Mulcair said there is no way such an expansion could proceed with the rules the way they are.

“To the extent that you can’t even discuss these things in the absence of a thorough, credible, complete assessment process, you can’t therefore even discuss an increase in

flow and an increase in tanker traffic, because the condition is carrying out a thorough examination,” Mulcair said. “And the Conservatives have gutted that. They’ve rendered it meaningless.”

Rankin, a lawyer who advised the B.C. NDP on its plan to withdraw B.C. from the joint review of Northern Gateway, is running in a by-election to replace retired Victoria MP Denise Savoie. Rankin agreed with Mulcair that the Kinder Morgan proposal shouldn’t proceed with the current system, adding that there has not yet been a formal application for the TransMountain expansion.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has insisted that Northern Gateway and other projects will still be approved or denied on scientific grounds only.

When federal Transport Minister Denis Lebel announced changes to the Navigable Waters Protection Act in October, he said the 1882 legislation had greatly overextended its original intent. Lebel cited a lake near Edmonton that required 80 separate federal assessments to build boat docks for cottages.

Other environmental laws still apply to protect lakes and rivers, whether they are navigable or not, he said. tfletcher@blackpress.ca
