Members of Lower Similkameen youth organizations participate in the wreath laying ceremony at Keremeos’ Remembrance Day services on November 11 in Memorial Park.
Keremeos village staff ratified a new collective agreement between CUPE Local 608 and the village on Monday, November 5. The two year agreement, from January 1, 2013 to December 31 2014 includes wage increases of 1.5 per cent and two per cent respectively per year, as well as changes in contract language that provides “greater clarification and certainty for both the village and the union moving forward.” The CUPE Bargaining Committee and Village of Keremeos started bargaining on November 5 and signed a Memorandum of Agreement on the contract the same day. The deal was formally ratified by CUPE members later that day by a vote of 100 per cent and council ratified the deal following the regular meeting of council on November 5.
Strong turnout for Lower Similkameen Remembrance Day services By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com
A
large crowd gathered in Keremeos’ Memorial Park on Sunday, November 11 to pay their respects to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice as the community observed Remembrance Day. Several hundred - including a large complement of youth - braved sub zero temperatures for this year’s ceremonies, which took place against the background
of a partially snow dusted K Mountain. Similkameen Elementary Secondary School student Haley Porter led the audience with a rendition of “O Canada,” followed by Legion Chaplain Jason Wiebe leading prayers. Sidney Wigglesworth provided trumpet solos for The Last Post, while SESS student Caroline Brunton read the Armistice Day poem. Patrick Buchanan piped the parade detail into the park in addition to piping Lament. Rae Langille and Wallace Reid also provided
Remembrance Day services to residents of Orchard Haven on Thursday, November 8. Jerry Orford and Mary Goguin, both residents of the facility, are veterans. Goguin still has her military uniform, in excellent shape after more than 60 years. Rather than being diminished by time, Remembrance Day ceremonies in Keremeos appear to be more relevant than ever. An unofficial survey of crowds attending the ceremonies over the past few years has seen an apparent increase both in overall numbers as well as youth attending.
