PROPOSED RAVEN PROJECT
PV chamber favours mine Business group passes resolution; others question origin of workers JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
“Unless environmental studies are adverse,” the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce has given the thumbs up to the proposed Raven Coal Project. The chamber’s board of directors passed a motion of support for the project at a recent meeting. In a news release, the chamber referred to the promise of jobs: “The Raven Employment Forecast totals up to 350 new, well-paying, full-time mine, port and transportation jobs and hundreds of indirect jobs in the Comox Valley, Port Alberni and surrounding regions if the project is approved.” The proposed Raven project is located five kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal. Project manager Don Berkshire asked for the chamber’s support in September. See COAL, page A5
PARKSVILLE BUDGET
Tough decisions AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A number of new capital projects and long term plans will require some big decisions from Parksville council through their budget season, beginning with the first public meeting at 6 p.m., Nov. 8 at city hall. Mayor Chris Burger said that last year’s budget was a transition year for the new council who have now been on the job for a year and are taking more ownership of the next budget. The main changes in this year’s budget revolve around the addition of a number of capital projects due to the first update to their 20 Year Capital Plan in about eight years, said director of finance Lucky Butterworth.
