QUALICUM BEACH TOWN COUNCIL

Infighting continues

Councillor and mayor trade barbs JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek continues to struggle with the nature and form of the new town council, says Coun. Dave Willie. A mayor is supposed to convey to town staff and the public alike the consensus of council, Willie said in an interview with The NEWS after the town’s regular council meeting Monday night. “In the past (before the last election), the mayor was consensus,” said Willie, pointing out that Westbroek is often not on the same side of votes that pass with the current council. “It’s a difficult thing for him to overcome (now) when it comes to staff direction.” The mayor said Tuesday he was surprised by Willie’s comments, and he said he believes there are old, hard feelings resurfacing. Westbroek has defeated both Willie and current town councillor Bill Luchtmeijer in mayoral races of the past. See MAYOR, page A8

Students safe

Officials offer up-to-date info on housing for Koreans LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

There are no safety concerns with the number of Korean students living in two single family homes in the area, said local superintendent of schools, Jim Ansell. “(Their accommodations are) very comfortable and safe,” he said. The NEWS recently published an article stating 22 people — mostly Korean students and some staff —were living in a four-bedroom house in Nanoose Bay, based on information attained from Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) staff and from residents at a Nanoose Bay Fire Protection Society’s annual general meeting. Residents at that meeting questioned the safety of the children living in the home. See CONCERNS, page A8
