A soft market for retail space could delay development planned for Port Coquitlam’s Dominion Triangle. In a letter to the city of Port Coquitlam, Onni Group development manager Jamie Vaughan said despite the company’s efforts over the last three years, market conditions have made it difficult to find tenants for the commercial properties. The company is currently developing a retail centre in the Dominion Triangle, anchored by Walmart and Canadian Tire. When it is completed, the project will boast more than 650,000 sq. ft. of commercial space for both large and medium-format retailers. As part of the devel-
opment, the company is required to build a promenade in what is called the “lifestyle centre” at Fremont Village. This construction consists of an 18 m wide road with sidewalks on either side and at least one tree every 9 m. Onni says it intends to complete the project but is asking the city to allow construction of the buildings and surrounding amenities to be phased in over time, Vaughan said. see ONNI, page A9
New Port Mann to open Dec. 3: union Bus drivers say they’ve been notified of opening By Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS

Led by principal Petra Kintzinger and student bell ringers — including Manvir Tagger (Grade 3) — kids and staff of James Park elementary school in Port Coquitlam paraded from their old school to its replacement on Monday morning and toured the building. Tuesday was expected to be the first full day of classes in the $14.8-million replacement school.
The new Port Mann Bridge may officially open with eight lanes on Dec. 3, although transportation ministry officials won’t confirm the date circulated by the bus drivers’ union. Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 president Don MacLeod said the union was notified drivers will be required to run the new Highway 1 rapid bus service,
which is promised to be in place on opening day of the new bridge. “My understanding is the first Monday in December,”he said. A ministry spokesman said the bridge’s official opening date will be announced in the coming weeks, giving drivers enough notice of the traffic pattern change and the date tolling will start. There have been no difficulties with construction and work remains on schedule for an eightlane opening sometime in December as planned, the spokesperson said. see HIGHWAY 1, page A6
