exactly six years since Manjit Panghali died at the hands of her husband. And while the day will forever be a dark one for her sister Jasmine Bhambra, she was finally able to take a deep breath this week, knowing that Mukhtiar Panghali will remain in prison. Mukhtiar Panghali’s murder conviction was upheld by the B.C. Court of Appeal on Tuesday. Mukhtiar was convicted of second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body in February 2011 and later Jasmine sentenced to life Bhambra in jail with no chance of parole for 15 years. He appealed his conviction earlier this year, arguing there was insufficient direct evidence he strangled his wife or that he intended to kill her. The senior jazz band at Frank Hurt Secondary School will be among those performing next week at a tribute concert for longtime Surrey music teacher Bob LaBonte, who passed away in August. The concert takes place Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Frank Hurt Secondary (77 Avenue and 139 Street). Doors open at 6 p.m., and the music starts at 7 p.m.

night for a moondance, With the stars up above in your eyes.” The words are from singer/songwriter Van Morrison’s Moondance, which was often at the top of Bob LaBonte’s playlist. “That was one of Bob’s signature songs that he used to always play,” says Helen, his wife of 14 years. “But he loved all music. He was one of those guys that he’d hear a tune once and he could play it.” That unbridled musical talent and passion will be celebrated next week at a tribute concert at Frank Hurt Secondary to honour LaBonte, who taught in the Surrey School District for 38 years prior to his death in August.
