A re-creation of the iconic Bates Motel and house, which sits just north of the intersection of 272 Street and 8 Avenue in Aldergrove, is creating a lot of buzz in the Twitterverse. A&E is filming a prequel to Alfred Hitchock’s 1960 hit film Psycho, which tells the chilling backstory of the relationship between Norman Bates and his mother. The series is expected to air in 2013. It stars Freddie Highmore as a young Norman and Vera Farmiga as his ill-fated mother.
Cocaine valued at $1.5 million dumped near Aldergrove film set Acting on an anonymous tip, police recover two hockey bags containing 21 bricks Monique TaMMinga Times Reporter
Hockey bags with $1.5 million worth of cocaine inside were dumped out of a van and into a ditch in rural Aldergrove on Thursday morning, Oct. 4. Around 7:30 a.m., Langley RCMP received an anonymous call about a suspicious scene in the 27200 block of 8 Avenue. The caller said he witnessed an eastbound van with three occupants inside throw what looked like three hockey bags into a ditch at that location. Police went to the area and recovered two hockey bags containing what
appeared to be 21 bricks of cocaine. Police dogs attempted to locate the third bag, however they weren’t successful. Police could not locate anyone associated to the bags, said Cpl. Holly Marks. These bricks of cocaine, weighing 21 kilograms, have an approximate street value of $1.5 million, said Marks. Langley RCMP has not been able to identify the owner of the drugs so no charges will be laid. Cocaine-filled duffel bags have been dumped before on Zero Avenue, with the idea that someone was meant to pick them up and sneak them across the border, said Marks. But in this case, it isn’t known if the cocaine was tossed because
the people were afraid of being caught or if the police short-circuited a drop off/ pick up scenario. “This is a substantial seizure that we are happy to have off the streets,” said Langley RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke “There is no doubt these drugs would have caused significant harm to many people’s lives. I am hopeful that instead, this seizure will have a positive impact.” The location where the bags of cocaine were dumped is the same area where a film set for a new Psycho television series has been created, even featuring the iconic Bates Motel. The set has created quite a buzz around town, with many people taking pictures.
Tear down Willoughby Elementary and Langley Secondary and build new facilities nearby; turn R.E. Mountain Secondary into a middle school and build an addition onto the overcrowded R.C. Garnett Elementary — these are just a few of the recommendations to come out of the much-anticipated Long Term Facilities Plan on Tuesday night. The plan was unanimously approved at a special Board of Education meeting. It was a full house, with parents from several schools, including Glenwood Elementary and Langley Secondary, wanting to know what is planned for their children’s schools. This is the first long-term plan Langley School District has ever had, pointed out board chair Wendy Johnson. “It has been a commitment of this board to consult with the public and we will continue to do that,” she promised. “These are broad recommendations, a road map for the future,” said Trustee Megan Dykeman. “The intention of the board is not to rush decisions,” said Trustee Cecilia Reekie. “This plan looks at being ahead of the curve so we don’t repeat what happened in Willoughby,” said Dykeman. But some of the recommendations made in the plan will become immediate requests in a five-year capital plan the board must submit to the Ministry of Education by the end of October. That capital plan, if approved by trustees, will ask the province to fund an addition onto the already overcrowded R.C. Garnett Elementary, as well as build three new elementary schools and one new high school in Willoughby. continued, PAGE 5
