Chamber seeks input from business owners Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Past, present and future business owners in Cranbrook are being asked to take part in an online survey. The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce has put out the survey so it can get a clear picture of the challenges and advantages of doing business in Cranbrook. “The goal is to really get a solid picture of the business climate and what we can do to improve it,” said Dave Butler, a director on the Chamber’s board. Those who are in business, who have been in business, and who are starting a business here are being asked to provide their input. “We are really trying to get a sense from people what the business climate is like in Cranbrook,” said Butler. “We ask some questions about the kinds of solu-
tions that they think would be implemented to help improve that business climate.”
“We think if we can get a third (of businesses to do the survey) that will be a really good cross section of the business community and it will give us a really good sense of how people are feeling.” David Butler The survey came about after Mayor Wayne Stetski asked the Chamber to tell council what is and isn’t working for local businesses. “We decided to undertake this survey to get as many businesses as we could responding so
we could get our finger on the pulse as to what people are feeling,” said Butler. Once the survey period is up, the Chamber board will analyze the data and provide a report to the city and to Chamber members. “We will be very, very transparent about the results,” said Butler. The Chamber hopes to have 500 business owners participate in the survey, which would represent one third of the business licenses that have been issued by the City of Cranbrook. “We think if we can get a third, that will be a really good cross section of the business community and it will give us a really good sense of how people are feeling,” said Butler. The survey can be found online at www. c ra n b ro o k c h a m b e r. com. Responses will be accepted up to 4:30 p.m. on October 26.
‘Legalize it!’ (who supports it?) Municipal officials voted to support the decriminalization of pot last month. Here’s how Cranbrook’s council voted Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
A convention of local government politicians in Victoria last month came out with a decision that marijuana should be decriminalized. The Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) annual convention brings together mayors, councillors, and regional district directors from
every B.C. community. During the Sept. 24-28 convention, the elected officials were asked to vote on this motion: “Whereas marijuana prohibition is a failed policy which has cost millions of dollars in police, court, jail and social costs; and whereas the decriminalization and regulation of marijuana would provide tax reve-
nues: therefore be it resolved that UBCM call on the appropriate government to decriminalize marijuana and research the regulation and taxation of marijuana.” Some of Cranbrook’s council was present for that vote; the Townsman asked how they responded.

Carjacking suspect to stay in custody Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
The man charged in last week’s alleged carjacking near Creston that led to a police shooting in Cranbrook will remain in custody until at least Nov. 5. Nicholas John Bullock, 26, ap-
peared in Cranbrook Provincial Court on Tuesday, Oct. 9, facing charges of assault with a weapon, robbery, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of stolen property, and possession of a weapon with a dangerous purpose. Heavily tattooed, Bullock
seemed attentive but jittery during the court proceedings. Judge G. Brown remanded Bullock in custody until his next court appearance on Nov. 5 in Cranbrook, though Bullock is expected to appear via video.
