MP David Wilks talks about the first few weeks back in Parliament and his no vote on the beginning of life motion Annalee Gr ant Townsman Staff

It’s been a controversial few weeks in the House of Commons for Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks as members from across the country debated passing a motion to study when life begins. The private member’s motion, put forward by Kitchener-Centre MP Stephen Woodworth, asked Parliament to set up a commit-

tee that would study when life begins as it relates to the Criminal Code of Canada. Currently in Canada life officially begins when the infant emerges from a mother’s womb. Wilks, who was not in the House when the debate took place on Friday, September 21, said it was an interesting vote on September 26. “That was probably the quietest I’ve ever heard it in the House,” he said, explaining that often debate and conversation continues into the voting period. “It was a serious vote.” Wilks said his position was clear from the moment the motion was put forward. He voted nay on the motion, along with 203 other MPs, while 91 voted in favour.

Trickle Creek turns 20 C AROLYN GR ANT bulletin@cyberlink.ca

It’s hard to believe, but Kimberley’s golf course on the mountain, Trickle Creek, is celebrating 20 years on Sunday, September 30. They are going to celebrate with a fun tournament that will bring together all sorts of people involved in the history of the course, including designer Les Furber and many former pros and managers. The community is invited as well, though space is limited. The tournament starts with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. If you can’t make the golfing you might want to attend a social at the clubhouse at 4:30 p.m. , where staff awards will be handed out. The beneficiary of all funds raised at this fun tournament will be Big Brother and Sister of Cranbrook.

It’s apple picking season and this weekend Wildsight is setting up their apple press at the Kimberley Community Fair to help you turn your harvest into yummy, old-fashioned apple juice. The press will be available all day Saturday and Sunday during the regular Community Fair hours –that’s Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am5pm. Wildsight staff and volunteers will be on hand to show people how to use the press. Just pick apples from your, a neighbour’s or a tree on public property -Wilsight has ladders, fruit pickers & bags to help you with this too – details at www.wildsight.ca. Bring your apples to the fair and walk out shortly after with your juice. Apples should be washed and people also need to bring containers for their juice. The press will be set up outside near the fence so people can pass their apples over the fence and then enter through the regular Community Fair entrance.
