Three Blooms for Barriere

always, both Terry Fox Runs in Barriere were well attended. As always attended The Community Terry Fox Run on Sept. 16, had 86 registered participants, raising over $6243 from the community of Barriere. The weather was perfect for the event; sunny, but not too hot for those running. Registration was at the Barriere Bandshell where participants began their run. They ran, walked, biked and even scooted around Barriere. They wrapped up the fundraising event back at the Bandshell a fews hours later. Miss Oates, a teacher at the Barriere Elementary school organized the schools Terry Fox Run. It was held on Sept. 20. The whole school participated. The goal was to raise a toonie per child enrolled in the school. The 225 children were successful in reaching this goal, bringing in just over $455. The students participated in a assembly learning about the history of Terry Fox Run and its founder with a special guest appearance from local resident and the community Terry Fox Organizer Kathy Cooper. The excitement from the students was obvious with many cheers and applauds from the crowd as they bursted through the school doors and began their run. It is heartwarming to see the youth in Barriere being so involved in such an important community event.

Barriere Bandshell paver volunteer day Provincial Winter Fair
Submitted bmitted The Ministry of Transportation and Argo Road Maintenance generously vol volunteered the time and equipment. They and local volunteers layed approximately 7,000 brick pavers in front of the Barriere Bandshell. It took two days of hard work, which included preparing the site and then putting the pavers in place. “We didn’t get the grant we applied for to pay someone to do this for the community,” said Colleen Hannigan from the District of Barriere office, “however when Argo and MOTI stepped up to volunteer, we used the matching funds we did set aside in the budget to purchase both new and used pavers for the project.” Prior to the day, District staff put a pipe chase in under the paved walkway which extends from the stage out into the grass portion of the oval to accommodate cables for events using a sound system. This will protect the cables and make the walkway more accessible for scooters and walkers.
