Port donates $60,500 for medical tools

PRINCE RUPERT - Health care on the north coast got a boost today as the Prince Rupert Port Authority donated $60,500 toward new orthopedic surgery tools for the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital.

The money comes from the port’s Community Investment Fund, and port authority president and CEO Don Krusel said this is a perfect example of why the fund is in place.

“I can’t think of a better way to spend money than on health care in the community, particularly specialized health care,” he said.

“As we entertain businesses

that are proposing to come to Prince Rupert, one of the first questions they ask is about health care and the quality of life...Today people have to leave town to get some of this service, so this is exactly what the fund is designed for.”

Northern Health was able to use the money to leverage an additional $60,000 from the North Coast Health Improvement Society and $5,000 from Ridley Terminals, and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alf Smith says the new tools will go a long way to providing

better service in the OR. “With the new tools we can do more cases, and those are cases that would be going out of town or on a waiting list. We have the expertise to do the procedures here, but it is often the resources that are lacking,” he said, Don Krusel noting that the time required to sanitize the tools limits the number of operations they can do in a given day.

“This allows us to essentially do more of the same that we are doing...We can go directly ahead with another surgery instead of having to wait for the sterilization of the tools we have.”

As well as the work of the North Coast Health Improvement Society, a volunteer group that raises funds for health care equipment in Prince Rupert, Dr. Smith and health services administrator Sheila Gordon-Payne praised both the Prince Rupert Port Authority and Ridley Terminals for stepping forward with a donation.

“The fact that we have businesses that are willing to donate for health care shows that it is not just jobs they are bringing to the community,” said Dr. Smith.

“I would say this is one of the gifts that we have in Prince Rupert,” added Gordon-Payne.

The tools have been ordered and are one their way to the hospital.

First Nations oppose coastal bear hunt

PRINCE RUPERT Ten First Nations groups on the province’s north and central coast have declared a ban on bear hunting in the Great Bear Rainforest, with the provincial government stating their disappointment with the unilateral ban.

“Despite years of effort by the Coastal First Nations to find a resolution to this issue with the province, this senseless and brutal trophy hunt continues,” said Kitasoo/Xaixais First Nation Chief Doug Neasloss.

The Coastal First Nations - the group imposing the ban - are against people hunting both grizzly bears and black bears for reasons other than for subsistence or out of self-defence.

The coalition of First Nations have a number of issues with the hunt, including the fact that hunters tend to go after larger, potentially genetically-superior bears which could weaken future breeding; unknowingly harvesting black bears that have the recessive gene responsible for the Kermode or Spir-

it bear; and the loss of tourism opportunities.

Above all, the group is opposed to killing animals that are not to be used for food.

“It’s not a part of our culture to kill an animal for sport and hang them on a wall,” Jessie Housty, a councillor with the Heiltsuk Nation, said. He alleges that hunters often gun down bears while they are near shoreline foraging for food.

Currently 58 per cent of traditional territories of the Coastal First Nations are closed to grizzly bear hunting, but the province does allow 300 grizzlies to be hunted throughout B.C. every year.

In an attempt to protect the black bear population that carries the recessive Kermode gene, the province has already banned black bear hunting in 122,000 hectares in the Great Bear Rainforest and also made it illegal to hunt Kermode bears.

The province will give out 32 permits for hunting grizzly bears inside the Coastal First Nations’ territory this fall, and based on past experience the govern-

However, William Housty, chair of the Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department board of directors in Bella Bella, said that the Coastal First Nations don’t care about the numbers and that even one bear being taken as a trophy goes against the values, beliefs and customs of the Coastal First Nations.

“Coastal First Nations

will enforce the ban by continuing to have presence on their traditional territories, by continuing to pressure the government to live up to signed agreements, and by continuing to walk the same shores, beaches and estuaries that the people of the Coastal First Nations have walked for thousands of years,” William Housty said.

“This fight will continue until all agreements are met, and until the Coastal First Nations

have a say in the management of their territories, particularly the management of bears.

None of the Coastal First Nations have ceded any land to anybody, so we feel that our word needs to count for something within our own territories.”

According to Housty, the Coastal First Nations have been fighting this issue for decades, and haven’t been able to get the province government to take action.

RCMP warn of drugs in ceremony

MASSET - The Masset RCMP has recently been receiving information from concerned citizens of Haida Gwaii about a group called the Earth People United and the groups founder Erick Gonzalez.

The group’s website states that their mission is to connect people to the natural and spiritual world, and to bridge the wisdom of the Ancient Ones with the world of today. One of the concerns raised by the public is that the group is encouraging and facilitating the use of hallucinogenic drugs during the religious ceremonies in order to experience a spiritual state of mind. It has been reported that drugs such as Peyote, Mescaline and Ayahuasca are being used during these ceremonies to elicit hallucinations that are then being interpreted as spiritual or ceremonial. It should be noted that Mescaline in any form is a controlled

substance and is listed in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) under Schedule III of the act. As such possession or distribution of Mescaline would contravene the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and could result in charges under the CDSA. The Masset RCMP is urging the public to think critically about the use of these so called “healing” or “spiritual” drugs. Not only are some of these substances illegal in Canada but it has been reported that they can produce negative long term side affects to a persons health and well being. These side affects have been described as insomnia, anxiety, emotional instability and headaches which can also be accompanied by various other physiological reactions. The illegal nature of these hallucinogenic drugs and their health risks should be taken very seriously if considering their use.

nity members is that traditional Haida gifts are being given to the groups founder, Erick Gonzalez.

These culturally relevant gifts are provided in addition to a fee that is required to attend the ceremonies and take part in the spiritual gatherings. There is concern among community members that the motivation for accepting these gifts is for the monitory value of the gifts instead of the cultural significance that is usually associated to gift giving in the Haida Nation. The tradition of gifting is an widely accepted practice and is not suggested that it should be stopped.

What is of concern is the expectation of receiving a gift. Any group or individual that expresses an expectation to receive a gift, should be questioned in regards to their motives.

RCMP encourage people to question the actions of individuals or organizations who claim to provide a spiritually healing experience in exchange for money.

KITIMAT - CityWest has grand ambitions as it expands its service through the Northwest.

What’s in store for the Prince Rupert-based, and owned, communications company was the subject of this past Thursday’s Kitimat Chamber of Commerce dinner with guest speaker Bill Craig, CityWest’s CEO. Craig spoke to the Sentinel ahead of his visit, and talked about their plans to break away from their reliance on telecommunication giant Telus. “All communication in this region...have historically run on the same carrier’s wholesale back-

bone network between Terrace and Prince George,� said Craig, referring to Telus’s infrastructure.

The company recently spent $11 million to break away from that reliance and created their own fibre network between Kitimat, Terrace and Prince Rupert. And they plan to extend that even further. “By November 2012, we will have extended this network from Terrace to Prince George,� he said, adding that it will cost $50 million.

But such development will “bring competition to the valley,� as telus will no longer be relied on to bring Internet.

Meanwhile CityWest will be investing their savings to diversifying the connection the company has to the world.

He added that Kitimat and Prince Rupert are unique in how isolated their connections are.

Section 288 of the Local Goverment Act states that municipalities are not liable in any action based on nuisance where the damages arise, directly or indirectly, out of the breakdown or malfunction of a sewer system, a water or drainage facility or system, or a dike or road. Nuisance actions are defined as instances in which a home is damaged as a result of a sewer, drainage or water system, or roadway or dike, breaking down and malfunctioning.

The main part of the training was to position a boom to contain the spill in a small area that can be cleaned up or to deflect a spill away from a water intake or an environmental area where birds are nesting for example.

PRINCE RUPERT - The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive in Prince Rupert ran this past week with collections being picked up on Saturday, September 15.

Designated homes received a paper collection bag in their mailboxes at the beginning of the week and were placed out on front steps to be picked up by volunteers Saturday morning. This was the second annual event for Prince Rupert. Last year just under 1500 pounds of nonperishable donations were collected and this year over 2100 pounds were collected.

A huge thank you goes out to all the community partners who contributed supplies, vehicles and even the time helping deliver and collecting bags. Community Partners this year include Overwaitea foods, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Stuck on Designs, Maher Terminals, BMO Bank of Montreal The Salvation Army food bank, Tim Hortons, and the Prince Rupert Port Authority Over 50 volunteers from the community joined the volunteer collection day.

KITIMAT - Kitimat council approved a capital transfer of $14,000 from their wading pool removal project to the Smith Street Playground project.

Leisure Services needed the extra money from the removal project — which did not proceed — to pay for the installation of the playground on Smith Street.

The playground project was budgeted at $45,000 and while the equipment itself came in on budget at approximately $25,000, the cost for installation skyrocketed from an estimated $23,000 to $37,000.

Kitimat administration blame “erratic pricing” of contractors in Kitimat these days to the jump in costs.

Being $14,000 short, the city looked to the unused wading pool money.

Police seeking suspect

KITIMAT - The RCMP are seeking a suspect and motive in an alleged assault that occurred near Nechako Elementary School.

The incident, which took place Sept. 9, was said to have involved a man grabbing a woman at around 8:20 a.m.

“It occurred on the path between the treed area, behind the school, and Pintail Street,” said Cpl. Darryl Peppler.

He said investigators are still gathering information on the crime from the victim and have yet to establish why it happened.

“As far as the motive, we don’t know if it was robbery or sexual in nature,” he said.

He explained that a woman walking on the pathway was approached by the man who allegedly grabbed at her. The woman received some scratches

The police are seeking an Aboriginal man, approximately 40-years-old, six feet tall, with short, dark, scruffy hair, who is not clean shaven and was wearing a red t-shirt at the time.

College makes big buck pitch

TERRACE - Northwest Community College needs to spend $45 million on a new structure to better house its technology and trades programs, its president told city council Sept. 13.

Denise Henning said the money would provide 120,000 square feet of space containing up to date equipment to produce the kind of graduates needed by industries who are about to set up shop in the region. “There’s just more and more demand for post secondary education,� said Henning of changing workforce requirements.

Projections calling for 5,500 workers being needed in the region within a few years require the college to be at the front of technology and trades training in the region, she said.

Henning asked for the city’s help in lobbying the provincial government to come up with needed capital financing.

But she also told council, in response to questions, that approaches are being made to have companies chip in.

Henning noted that the main trades building is not only old, some of its equipment dates back to her birth year of 1958. “We need to be thinking of 2020 and

As it is, the existing trades building needs $6 million just to address health and other issues, Henning continued. “We have more women in trades, young mothers and single mothers and we have two toilets for women,� said Henning of facilities in the building. “I would be remiss as the president of Northwest Community College not to go for an ideal situation,� she said.

While the sum of $45 million sounds like a big number, Henning and Dave O’Leary, a college official who was also at the meeting, said similar amounts are being spent at other community colleges. “We want the same that southern students have every day and we’re not apologizing for it,� Henning told city council.

Mayor Dave Pernarowski said council would carry the college’s

message forward. “It’s not something that would be nice to have, but it’s really something we must have,� he said.

Speaking afterward, Henning said it was too early to say if the current trades building, provided a renovation makes sense, would fit into plans for a modern trades training footprint. “We have no [building] plans [right now].

This is a concept and we’re going forward on a critical need,� she said.

The college has been the beneficiary of construction elsewhere – a Prince Rupert campus built at a cost of $12 million was opened in 2005 and a $16.7 million campus just opened in Smithers.

The Northern Gateway Project is generating healthy debate.

British Columbians are asking many important questions like, is this pipeline worth it for BC and its northern communities?

The benefits that the Northern Gateway Project will bring to British Columbia are significant.

It will create jobs, generate new tax revenue for BC, and strengthen the province’s economy.

New jobs will be created...

Many people will be employed to build this project. Here in BC, over 3,000 high-paying construction jobs will be created during the building phase. Enbridge has created the Gateway Education and Training Fund, a $1.5 million commitment that will support training initiatives that focus on pipeline construction skills. The knowledge and experience acquired during the construction phase will serve them well as the demand for skilled workers in the energy sector here in British Columbia, Canada and around the world continues to increase.

Inland Air to be featured on CBC

PRINCE RUPERT Prince Rupert business Inland Air Charters will be featured on CBC’s popular television show, The BIG Decision later this year, after a crew was in town filming last week.

“It was an interesting experience. My job flying airplanes and running a business is a lot easier than doing their jobs,” Inland Air owner Bruce MacDonald said, adding that he couldn’t work in front of a camera on a regular basis.

MacDonald heard about the opportunity last spring and applied for the show. In August MacDonald found out his business would be featured in an episode.

When MacDonald asked why Inland Air

had been chosen on the show, the show’s executive producer said that Inland Air was picked right off the bat because it fit the criteria.

MacDonald applied for the show to get expertise advice on marketing to reach the European and Asian markets for tourism.

“Tourism is what we’re trying to promote up here and bring Prince Rupert in as a destination rather then a place people pass through on their way to somewhere else,” MacDonald said.

Big name Canadian investors Jim Treliving and Arlene Dickinson were in town on September 9 until September 13, as well as a filming crew.

Interestingly, Treliving had already living in the community a number of years ago.

“Jim was actually based here for two years in 1962 as a RCMP officer. So he’s familiar with Prince Rupert,” MacDonald said.

While Dickinson, Treliving and the rest of the crew were in town, Inland Air flew them over to Haida Gwaii to see the Haida Heritage Centre and the village of Skedans, as well as other site seeing locations on the islands.

At this time Inland Air does not know whether they will be funded to help with marketing. MacDonald and Inland Air office manager Virginia Mcrae will be traveling to Vancouver at the end of the month to finish the episode and learn their fate.

Muslims sponsor forums in Terrace and in Dease Lake

TERRACE - The Ahmadiyya Muslim community returns to Terrace Sept. 23 for another in a series of interfaith sessions.

This one explores how to deal with economic and moral crises existing in the current

state of the world.

There are five speakers, each representing a faith community.

Two are local, Pastor Blake Holenstein, who has been primarily responsible for the youth and young adults ministry at the Terrace Pentecostal Assembly since July 2011. He’ll be representing the Christian

faith.

The other local person is restauranteur Davinder Singh Sangha, who will be representing the Sikh faith.

Three other speakers from elsewhere will represent the Islamic perspective, the aboriginal perspective and the Buddhist perspective.

The Muslim speak-

er is Muhammad Afza Mirza, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community and who is currently serving as the missionary-in-charge for Mississauga, Ontario. Serving as the moderator for the evening is George Clark.

The Sept. 23 session begins with light refreshments at 2:30 p.m.

followed by a 3 p.m. start at the aboriginal longhouse meeting hall at Northwest Community College. It lasts until 6:30 p.m. and there is a refreshment break in between.

This is the seventh symposium to be sponsored here by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community and is one of

many taking place across B.C. this year.

Founded in 1890, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community emphasizes the spread of Islam through peaceful means and has headquarters in Great Britain.

But the Ahmadiyya community is not well regarded by other Islamic followers and that’s

brought on persecution of Ahmadis in several Islamic countries.

The Ahmadiyya community travels next to Dease Lake for a session called “Focus on Islam.�

That session takes place Sept. 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Dease Lake Community Centre.

The exercise is set to be done on an annual basis but could be further

downstream next time, said Fallows.

er project, a Hwy 16 geographical response planning initiative, and

includes mapping the area along the Hwy 16 corridor, he said.

Central Interior Hockey League releases schedule for Rampage

PRINCE RUPERT - The Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL) released its schedule for the upcoming season, and with the ice out of the arena the Prince Rupert Rampage will start with a long road swing.

The Rampage will start the season against the perennial league champion Kitimat Ice Demons on Saturday October 6 in Kitimat. The next weekend the team will take a massive road trip, playing the Lac La Hache Tomahawks – the furthest southern team in the league – on October

13 and the Williams Lake Stampeders on October 14. Two weeks later the team will play one of only three Friday games against the Terrace River Kings on October 26 before traveling to Kitimat for another game against the Demons.

The home opener for the team will be October 27, once again against the Demons, and the following weekend the team hits the road again for a saturday game against the Houston Luckies and a Sunday game against the Smithers Steelheads. The next four games for the Rampage will be at home as the team hosts the Stampeders and the Kangaroos on November

24 and 25, host the Demons on December 1 and finish the homestand against the River Kings on December 8.

The Rampage continue their rivalry with the Demons on the road on December 14 and finish off the 2012 calendar year with a home game on December 29.

In 2013 the first game of the season will be on January 4 against the River Kings, and the team finishes off the 2012/2013 season with three home games against the Steelheads and Luckies on January 12 and 13 and play their last game against the Omenica Ice of Vanderhoof.

Grade five band program sees a high enrolment in its first year

Keeping an open mind I’m from British Columbia and I’m proud of that. I’m also proud to lead the Northern Gateway Project.

It’s been in development since 2001 – over a decade of intensive engineering, environmental study and planning has taken place with over 200 experts from around the world. I’ve been looking forward to the beginning of September for a while because it marked the first time Enbridge had the chance to make its case and address concerns about the project in the final stage of a lengthy, rigorous federal review. Since January, the federal panel reviewing our application has travelled throughout BC and Alberta to hear what residents have to say and to listen to Aboriginal communities about their rights and interests and how Northern Gateway might affect them.

It’s a great process, very Canadian – because everyone affected has the chance to give their opinion.

Through this process we’ve heard lots of questions and concerns about the project. And along the way we’ve met with over 17,000 people across BC and Alberta.

And we’ve increased the frequency of in-line inspections by a minimum of 50% over and above current standards. We’re not just listening.

Pipeline panned

TERRACE - After much discussion, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine board voted to oppose the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline at its Sept. 14 meeting.

The motion to oppose was brought forward by Telegraph Creek director David Brocklebank at the August meeting and was tabled to allow the other directors time to consult with their constituents.

Voting in favour of the motion were Brocklebank, Dease Lake alternate director Joey Waite, Terrace municipal directors Dave Pernarowski and Bruce Bidgood, Nass director (and regional district chair) Harry Nyce, Hazelton mayor Alice Maitland, Kispiox/Kitwanga director Linda Pierre and Diana Penner (who was sitting in for absent regular director Doug McLeod) for the area around Terrace. Voting against the motion were Thornhill director Ted Ramsey, Kitimat municipal director Corinne Scott, New Hazelton mayor Gail Lowry and Stewart municipal director Billie Ann Belcher.

During the discussion, Scott said she would vote against the motion because a federal project panel review would look at everything presented to it and supporting the panel was absolutely necessary. “Voting against it is to oppose the political process and I feel strongly we have to allow the [Joint Review Panel] to complete its findings,” she said.

Bidgood said the review was supposed to be independent and not political and that he had been greatly influenced by the prime minister and federal finance minister supporting the project. “What attracted me to northern B.C. was its beauty,” he said.

“If there was an environmental [disaster], I would have a hard time looking at the next generation and saying I didn’t do anything to oppose it.”

Ted Ramsey agreed with Scott, saying his constituents wanted him to remain neutral. Brocklebank said he had yet to talk to anyone who supported the pipeline project.

The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Orville was born on May 20, 1927 in Crystal City, Manitoba.

He passed away in Vernon, BC on September 12, 2012.

Oriville was predeceased by his loving wife Shirley, and his son Garth.

He will be lovingly remembered by his son Bruce (Nancy) Webster; daughters Lynne (Terry) McMurtrie and Diane (Brent) Hamilton; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Dad moved to Kitimat in the early 50s and worked for Alcan as General foreman of the Carbon Plant until he retired in 1985.

He was an avid golfer and loved being out on the course.

He got his first hole-in-one on the Hirsch Creek Golf course at the age of 71.

Passed with loved ones at his side At St. Josephs Comox.

BAND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT WORKER SCOPE: Reporting to the Band Manager, the Band Social Development Worker is responsible for the management of the Kitselas Social Assistance Program. Due to the sensitivity, confidentiality and demanding nature of the program, this position requires the Band Social Development Worker to be understanding and compassionate, while displaying a balance of firmness, fairness and patience.

DUTIES: 1. Is responsible to administer and implement the Social Assistance Programs as outlined in Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada’s (AANDC) Policy Directives and is funded by AANDC and Health Canada. Therefore, working knowledge of these programs is an asset.

2. Meets with Band Council on an annual basis to present an annual Work Plan and an annual Budget/ Cash Flow for the Social Assistance Program for Council adoption and ratification.

3. Provides Project Briefs, Work Plans and Budget/Budget Cash Flows for new programs and projects for Council adoption and ratification.

4. Submits a monthly Financial Report to the Director of Administration and Band Council along with a Case Load Report for each of the Social Assistance Programs.

5. Work with the Ministry for Children and Family Services as required.

6. Ensures that departmental budgets are on target and that all funding reimbursement claims are in accordance to plan.

7. Provide referral for clients that may require counselling. Consultations are carried out in the office and in the client’s homes.

8. Be prepared to work evenings and possible weekends when required.

9. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Administration.

Newbies and vets run Cannery Road

PRINCE RUPERT - The feet of 122 runners were pounding the pavement of the road leading from the North Pacific Cannery in Port Edward on Saturday, Sept. 15. This was the 9th Annual Cannery Road Race held by the Prince Rupert Running Club.

People of all ages and skill levels came out to the historic site to take part in the race. There were marathon-runners all the way from Ontario and also first-time runners from the club’s Learn to Run program. A healthy amount of participants from other northwest communities like Terrace raced as well.

With new coach, Demons prepare for a new season

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Ice Demons completed three nights of try-outs and a series of two intersquad games over the first week of September, at Tamitik Arena, with an average of 22 players each night, including a number of new young players and a group of returning core players.

The Demons have named club president, Cliff Madsen, as the team’s new head coach for the 2012 season with Darryl Craft as assistant coach. Practises will go twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays until the pre-season Ice Demons Challenge Cup tournament, this year to be hosted in Terrace by the River Kings on Sept. 28 and 29, with participation by the River Kings, Demons, the Smithers Steelheads and the Prince Rupert Rampage.

The Ice Demons captured the

Challenge Cup in last season’s preseason tournament held in Kitimat, defeating the Smithers Steelheads, who went on to win both the league and playoff titles in the CIHL and topped a very successful season by winning the Coy Cup in its first attempt.

The Challenge Cup Schedule will see the River Kings and Kitimat face off on Friday, Sept. 28, at 5:00 p.m. And the 8:00 p.m. Game will feature the Smithers Steelheads and the Prince Rupert Rampage.

Game three will go on at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and will see the two losers from Friday night match up. The Ice Demons Northern Challenge Cup will go to the winner of the match between Friday night’s winning teams at 8:00 p.m.

Don’t miss this exciting fourgame Northern Challenge Cup preseason series which will lead off into the regular 2012-13 season on Saturday, Oct. 6 when the Ice De-

mons will host the Prince Rupert Rampage for the opening clash at Tamitik Arena at 8 p.m. In an all West Division match up.

Other CIHL 2012-13 opening season games will see the Terrace River Kings hosting the East Division Houston Luckies in Terrace, while the CIHL champions, the Smithers Steelheads will also be hosting an East division team, the Omenica Ice on Smithers ice. The Steelheads will also meet the Ice in a second game at 1.00 p.m. On Sunday Oct. 7.

The last season opener, on Saturday, Oct. 6, will see the Williams Lake Stampeders travel west to Lac La Hache for what has been turning into heated local rivalries, since the Tomahawks entered the CIHL last season for the first time.

Each team will see nine home games in the 18 game schedule, which can be found on the Pointstreak service on most league team websites.

Fire ban put into place

SMITHERS – Effective at noon on Wednesday, Sept.

19, 2012, all open fires were prohibited throughout the Northwest Fire Centre, with the exception of the former North Coast Forest District, the Cassiar Fire Zone and the portion of the Skeena Fire Zone north of the Meziadin Junction.

The prohibition will remain in place until Oct. 15, 2012, or until the public is otherwise notified.

This prohibition is to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. Specifically, it prohibits: The burning of any waste, slash or other material.

The burning of stubble or grass. The use of fireworks or burning barrels of any size or description.

This prohibition does not apply to campfires or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Campfires must not be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres in size.
