Highway names are back Parksville council floats idea that crashed a few years back AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A Parksville councillor wants the city to look into changing the name of Highway 19A. Bill Neufeld suggested on Wednesday the main road through town is more of a city boulevard than a highway, especially since the city took it over from the province many years ago. He suggested that it would help the city promote itself with a more evocative name suggesting different combinations with “Boulevard” like Parksville, Marine, Pacific, or Nelson Park — the first postmaster who the community is named after. Coun. Marc Lefebvre pointed out the issue had been looked at before. He later expanded to The News that a citizen committee was set up to look at changing Highway 19A and the Alberni Highway in 2000 but in his recollection it “went off the rails” when many issues arose. Everyone on the street, including many businesses, would have to change their addresses, stationary and signs, some people had sentimental attachments to the old names and there would be costs involved with changing street signs and maps. “The next problem is, what do you change the name to?” he said, concluding that it is worth reviewing but didn’t think it is an urgent issue and that a lot of consultation would have to be done. Council unanimously agreed to ask staff to look into the possibility.

MLA gets new job in shuffle Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon says he got what he asked for NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
When Premier Christy Clark shuffled her cabinet this week, she gave Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon an opportunity to follow his passion. That passion, he said, involves helping to turn the province’s wood industry into far more than a two-by-four machine. Cantelon, who sat briefly as forests minister and more
recently as the parliamentary secretary for seniors for the Ministry of Health, was named as the parliamentary secretary for innovation and technology. He said Wednesday it’s a good fit. “I got what I asked for,” he said. “She put me in a position where I can work to expand the markets for wood fibre. We can’t just cut two-by-fours any more. We need more and different wood products.” See MLA WANTS, page A5
