Todd Richard gets CMT screen time

Todd Richard choked back tears a few times last Thursday night, as he described his journey in the country music scene and his reasons for being there. He and his family, friends and fans had gathered in a conference room at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa to watch the series premiere of CMT's new show Big in a Small Town. Richard is a contestant in the country music based reality series. He's competing against 30 other contestants from across Canada for a recording contract, cash prize and a touring opportunity sponsored by the broadcaster. It's a chance of a lifetime, and watching the premiere for the first time with his supporters brought out strong

emotions. In the show, he told producers how he made a promise to his father that he would follow his musical dreams. His father died about five years ago, and he's been true to his word. Richard has sold his Harrison-based plumbing company, his house and some of the expensive toys he and his wife had bought over the years. They have moved into a 600 square foot home, and he took a job with the school district as a maintenance man. Richard then went on to say that if his wife asked him to give up his dream so she could have her life back, he would do it. But that's not likely to happen anytime soon. His wife Sylvia has been one of Richard's biggest supporters through the years. She sat beside him through the screening at the hotel last

week, and when his segment was over, they shared a kiss. On the show, Richard sang Life's About People, a song he wrote with Rick Tippe. The judges seemed to love him as much as the crowd gathered at the hotel. At the hotel, he sang a few songs including Life's About People, much to the audience's delight. He also described the journey backstage, confessing that he wasn't feeling well in the days leading up to the filming in Penticton. After the show, he hugged supporters and autographed CDs and merchandise. Viewers could "like" their favourite on the show's website www. biginasmalltown.cmt.ca until last Wednesday, Aug. 29. The second show, including another 30 contestants from Eastern Canada

and the results of the West, aired Thursday night, after press time. To find out the results of that show, visit us online at www.ahobserver.com. If Richard makes it through this round, he'll be up against five other contestants vying for the top spot, and the winner will be crowned at the CCMA Awards on Sept. 9. Richard has had plenty of success since letting go and chasing his dream, including being nominated for multiple awards at the Canadian Country Music Awards. You can see Todd Richard perform live this weekend at Bands on the Beach, in Harrison Hot Springs, along with the Vacationers, Ailsa Rose, Chris Buck Band, Trevor Murray, Ken McCoy, Brent Lee, Kenny Hess and Matthew Cheverie. Emcee for the event is Curtis Pope from Country 107.
