The screams of thrill-seekers and the sugary smell of cotton candy will fill Central Saanich this long weekend, as the 145th Saanich Fair kicks off tomorrow (Sept. 1).

The fair, which attracts an average of 45,000 people to the Saanich Peninsula each year, is run by non-profit group North & South Saanich Agricultural Society. It is the longest continuously running agricultural fair in Western Canada.

As usual, the fair will feature a large midway, livestock, a farmer’s market and lots of entertainment, including fanfavourite bands like The Archers, Chick Wagon, Rukus and Phoenix the Band. Ten new acts have also been added to the entertainment roster – visit the entertainment stage at the fair to check them out.

There will be a number of contests for fairgoers with big

appetites, including the usual ice cream and watermelon eating contests, and a new addition: a SPAM eating contest.

These will also be hosted at the entertainment stage.

The fair also includes several horse shows and dog shows, a highland dance competition, and the exhibit halls, which feature award-winning produce, flowers, arts and crafts, and more.

The fair runs Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 1 and 2) from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday (Sept. 3) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission for adults is $10 ($9 on Monday), and seniors and youth aged seven to 13 cost $7 ($6 on Monday). Children six and under are free. Wristbands for unlimited rides at the midway are available for $40 on Saturday and Sunday, and for $35 on Monday.

Military police officer Sheldon Crawford set to cycle 1,000-km distance in Tour de Rock

heldon Crawford is accustomed to challenging himself.

As a military police officer at CFB Esquimalt and with a 2008 tour of Afghanistan under his belt, the 25-year-old corporal understands the mental and physical strength required to get the job done.

But when he trades in his uniform for cycling shorts this fall to conquer the 1,000-kilometre Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Crawford will be thinking of the hundreds of B.C. children diagnosed “I remember with cancer who struggle with much greater challenges every day. seeing the Tour de “I remember seeing the Tour de Rock, it was Rock. Crawford Crawford is one of two military police officers participating in this year’s tour – the other is Cpl. David Thompson, who works out of CFB Comox. The roster includes 14 police officers, two members of the media and two special guests.

Since its inception in 1998, Tour de Rock has raised more than $16.6 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. The money is earmarked for pediatric cancer research and also helps fund Camp Goodtimes, a medically supervised summer retreat for kids dealing with cancer.

“It gives the kids and their families the opportunity to have fun and not worry about chemotherapy and all their medical appointments,” Crawford said after he visited the Maple Ridge camp last month.

Crawford’s personal fundraising goal is $12,000, although he hopes to raise more He’s already managed to collect $7,000, including $4,000 from a concert at the Pacific Fleet Club in Victoria.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to give back and see some of the Island,” he said.

Deer, cougars go hand in hand An advisory group at the Capital Regional District is currently exploring options to deal with the ballooning deer population in Greater Victoria. We certainly hope those involved in making the decisions will keep in mind Mother Nature’s circle of life.

Recent events involving cougars Deer committee – livestock killings must keep food in Central Saanich and Saanich, and an chain in mind attack on a woman in her Trail, B.C. home – highlight how thin the line between urban and rural environments has become.

For any number of reasons, wildlife is straying closer to developed areas in search of food. While you may not like the deer eating your backyard vegetable garden, a larger selection of easy-to-catch deer keep the cougars full and fed most of the year, and will hopefully keep them from attacking humans and pets.

Conservation officers say there are eight to 10 cougar attacks on livestock every year in the CRD, mostly in Metchosin and Sooke.

While it seems like a relatively small number, the owners of these animals would certainly disagree.

If the advisory group determines a cull or removal of part of the deer population is necessary, they must keep in mind that it could impact the environmental order.

Significantly fewer deer for cougars to pick off could mean hungrier, more aggressive cats walking through our region’s farms and neighbourhoods desperately searching for food. And these animals aren’t picky eaters – living things that are slower, smaller or weaker than them are targeted.

Let’s be thankful that cougar attacks on humans and pets are as rare as they currently are, and hopefully whatever deer management solution is chosen will be mindful of the natural food chain, too.

It’s easy to become preoccupied.

We all have jobs or families or both, that take up much of our time. We plan vacations, business trips and coffee dates and fill our iPhones and Blackberries with appointments and reminders that seem to pop up on our screens in an endless slideshow of “to-dos.”

But seldom do I – and I’m sure many others – take the few minutes it would require out of my week to stop and consider someone else’s misfortune. Consider the needs of someone less fortunate or maybe a person who just needs a helping hand at that very moment.

We know that in every community there are people less fortunate than us. And sometimes, although we may not want to consider it, we might fall on hard times ourselves. As a community, we rely on the generosity and consideration of one another.

Whether it’s fundraising to help one of our own battle an illness, donating clothes or toys to a neighbour who could put them to better use, or simply dropping by a few cans of food to the food bank – we all benefit from giving back to the communities we live in.

We just have to remember and take the time to do it.

LETTERS Readers respond: Port Sidney Marina’s proposal impacts entire town Information was provided to residents of Second and Third street twice in July by the Port Sidney Marina Group in regards to them changing the configuration of one of their floats and adding a permanent structure.

The information included two proposals and a town requirement that the marina undertake a public consultation with residents located on Second and Third Streets who may be affected.

It is important to point out that the residents on these streets will not be the only ones impacted by the marina’s requested changes. The entire community and visitors to our beautiful seaside town will be affected by the location of the proposed structure.

The waterfront is a community jewel. The town of Sidney developed a walkway with flower beds, benches and sculptures. The result is more visitors who can appreciate the many aspects of Sidney including the seaside walkway.

It is bad enough we currently have garbage vessels in full view, now Port Sidney is asking to erect another full-view structure that impacts the seaside walkway and resident views.

This is not an example of a business that exemplifies community thoughtfulness or appreciation of esthetic value.

There are plenty of choices for storage facilities in the industrial parts of Sidney that would not negatively impact the sea views people enjoy.

Port Sidney Marina, park use bylaws, gay marriage Beacon Park for entertainment, I know she’d be the first one in line to address council to allow other productions be welcomed.

As the editorial notes, obviously seats would be ticketed, but lots of vantage points on the periphery for those whose budgets don’t allow attending shows could be available as well.

The Bible, God not the problem in gay marriage debate – people are Re: Plenty of proof God disproves of gay marriage (Letters, Aug. 24) So we want to know what God would think about the gay marriage issue? I believe looking in the bible would be moot, seeing as God didn’t write it, man did.

If you want to know God’s plans, instead look to nature. Lots of species share our occasional homoerotic behavior.

It seems like God has made his point: straight, bisexual or gay, it doesn’t matter.

The people who make it matter are the real problem.

Sidney parks bylaw on hosting paid events should be revised by town Re: Open Sidney’s bandshell (Our View, Aug. 24) By all means, the park bylaw should be revisited and reworded to allow ticketed events.

On the letters page in the paper of the same date is a comment from a Beacon Avenue business owner regarding how we can attract visitors to Sidney. What could be better than new forms of concerts and shows to draw visitors to Sidney?

What a real shame Shakespeare by the Sea was turned down. Hopefully they will be encouraged to try again next year.

Terry Fox Run at Centennial Park to be held Sept. 16 This year marks the 33rd Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. To keep Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer alive, the public is invited to participate in the Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Centennial Park, just off Wallace Drive in Central Saanich. This marks the 13th year for the Central Saanich run, which has raised over $77,000 to date.

Registration takes place between 8 and 9 a.m. and is by donation. The 5-km walk and 10-km run start at 10 a.m.

All money raised at the Terry Fox Runs, which take place nation-wide, goes to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Participants interested in collecting pledges can get pledge forms at Breadstuffs Bakery in Brentwood Bay or they can be found online at terryfox.org/Run/.

Last year close to 300 runners, walkers and cyclists participated in the Central Saanich event.

Chamber parts ways with its exec. director Devon MacKenzie News staff

The board of directors of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce announced Aug. 24 that they terminated the contract of executive director Doug Taylor.

“We want to commend Doug for everything he’s done for the SPCC,” said chamber president Mark deMedeiros, who added the termination of Taylor’s contract was a mutual agreement between the two parties. “[His] contributions to the SPCC have been invaluable and the board is grateful to Doug for all of his efforts and guidance this past year.”

The board, along with deMedeiros, is looking for a new executive director and hopes to fill the position as Doug Taylor soon as possible.

“The SPCC will continue to build the value proposition of the SPCC for its members coupled with its responsibility to maintain financial awareness and stability, as any business, large or small, must do,” deMedeiros said.

Taylor was appointed executive director of the chamber in June 2011.

NDP MLAs used the first public meeting of the legislative management committee to call for former clerk of the house George MacMinn to be removed from his $240,000-a-year consulting job.

NDP house leader John Horgan called for the second year of MacMinn’s consulting contract to be terminated, and asked if taxpayers are paying him for his car, club memberships or pension in addition to extending his salary.

MacMinn stepped down last year after 54 years as a legislative clerk, the longest term in Commonwealth history. He served as chief clerk from 1993 until 2011, when he agreed to make way for his long-time assistant Craig James.

Historically a secretive group overseeing the $70 million legislature budget, the Legislative Assembly Management Committee was pushed into the open by a critical report issued in July by Auditor General John Doyle.

Inattentive driver hits fire hydrant A single-vehicle accident saw Central Saanich police called to the 6400 block of Foxglove Terr. on Aug. 27 at around 8:30 a.m.

A woman who was driving her car along Bellavista Road reached down to grab something from the floor of her vehicle while she made the turn onto Foxglove Terrace.

As she was reaching down, she lost control of the vehicle and hit a fire hydrant. The vehicle was significantly damaged and had to be towed away.

The woman was charged with driving with undue care and attention.

The man identifies himself as the ‘gas man’ or the ‘furnace man’ and appears IN BRIEF to be targeting seniors on the Peninsula.

In some cases, the man has replaced hot water tanks and is paid for the job, typically by blank cheque.

“What we’re seeing is people paying him with cheques which have the ‘payable to’ section blank because he’s telling them he is going to use his business stamp on it,” said Cpl. Erin Fraser of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP. The problem is the man doesn’t even have a business registered in his name, she said.

“The Better Business Bureau has had complaints about him and we’ve had a total of six complaints about him on the Peninsula,” Fraser said.

School zones back in effect next week With back to school coming up, Central Saanich police are taking an extra step to remind drivers to obey school zones in the area. The police are teaming up with Mainroad Group to erect lighted signage in Central Saanich school zones to remind drivers that 30 km/h is now mandatory in front of all schools.

“The boards will be up during the first week of school just to remind drivers to be cautious again in school zones after the summer break,” said Cpl. Pat Bryant of the Central Saanich police.

Drivers can expect to see signage in front of Keating and Brentwood elementary schools, Bayside middle school and Stelly’s secondary.

Sidney teen Courtenay Neville-Rutherford struck gold once again at the 2012 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships held Aug. 17-19.

Last year NevilleRutherford took home a gold medal in the hammer throw event in Ottawa, and she did it again at the event held in Charlottetown this past week.

“I threw 53, which wasn’t a personal best

but it was good enough for gold,” said NevilleRutherford. Her goal throw for the event was 56 metres, but rain during the event hampered her throw slightly, she said.

She said she is looking forward to next year’s championships because they are much closer to home.

“I’m really hoping to qualify next year because the competition is being hosted in Langley,” she said. sports@peninsulanews review.com

“Before the world series, the team set a goal of winning two round robin games, which would qualify them for the semi finals and a top four finish. At the time, and given past results, this seemed like a lofty goal, but we knew we had a good team and would be able to compete,” Tucker said.

“The girls played great and exceeded expectations by not only qualifying for the semi finals, but beating Latin America in the semis [by a score of 5-2], to move on to the finals.”

The Canadian girls then played the U.S. West team from the Nunaka Little League in Anchorage, Alaska in the final. The team couldn’t pull out a victory and lost 6-2.

As Greater Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s senior population grows, so will the strain on long-term health care systems.

Last week federal and provincial governments awarded two University of Victoria researchers from the Centre on Aging more than $330,000 toward investigating how older adults transition through long-term care services.

Margaret Penning and Denise Cloutier will lead the study aimed at understanding the common pathways that people experience, with an ultimate goal of providing better care. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once we identify some of those common patterns, we want to say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Are there particular individual and social factors that are common to their experiences?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Cloutier,

a professor in the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s department of geography.

The study will evaluate data collected from people aged 75 or older connected to the Fraser Health Authority, the fastest growing health authority in B.C. Penning, of the UVic department of sociology, and Cloutier, will evaluate individual trajectories based on age, gender, income, social factors and available community resources. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand a lot about what makes people spend a certain amount of time in home care and then transition into residential care. Or why they would go to residential care immediately, and then around that, what happens when they go in and out of hospital,â&#x20AC;? Cloutier said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is on those transitions that people are the most vulnerable. If we can learn more

about those transitions and whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most vulnerable we can presumably plan better care and services in the years to come.â&#x20AC;?

Caldwell, Iris It is with profound sadness and deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of Iris Caldwell on Monday, August 27th, 2012 at the age of 84 years. She is survived by her loving husband; Ralph after 58 years of marriage, and her three children; Karen, Dianne (Andrew) and Russel (Donna) who were at her bedside to comfort her in her passing.

Iris will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren; Michael (Erica), Catherine (Ryan), Andrea (Donovan), Shannon, Rheana (Jason), Brendan (Amber), Michelle, Ryan and two great-grandchildren; Tahia and Eli. Born on March 25th, 1928 in Portsmouth, England, Iris lived through the blitz of WWII before meeting her future husband Ralph who had been deployed to England through the RCN for the Queens Coronation.

Iris and Ralph were married in 1954 and shortly there after Iris became a Canadian citizen. Iris and Ralph raised their three children in Victoria then in Vancouver and then later in life moved back to Victoria for the remainder of her life. Throughout her life Iris enjoyed square dancing, reading and her precious trips to Hawaii. Iris always had interesting stories to tell about her life in England and she loved a good joke. Family was always the most important part of Irisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life and she leaves a rich legacy of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, all of whom have happy memories of Iris.

Everyone who always knew Iris will remember her with great fondness and for her strong belief in a higher power.

A memorial service will be held On Saturday, September 1st at 11am, to celebrate Irisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglican Church, 1973 Cultra Ave., Saanichton, BC. In lieu of ďŹ&#x201A;owers, donations my be made to Vancouver Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Heart Fund.
