Fall from Canyon Bridge kills boy
First sand sculpture contest offers prizes
An 11-year-old boy was pronounced dead on the scene Monday evening after he fell while playing on trusses that support Canyon Bridge, west of Creston just off Highway 3. RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said police, ambulance and fire department personnel were called to the scene after 5 p.m. “Three young brothers were climbing around the trusses,” he said. “One slipped off and fell to the ground below. It was a drop of 40 to 60 feet.” Gollan said that investigation of the death is in the hands of the BC Coroners Service and that there is no suspicion of foul play. “This is a very dangerous practice, playing under a bridge of that height,” he said. Emergency personnel were able to reach the accident scene by way of a trail that winds down the steep incline from Canyon-Lister Road to the Goat River below. The area contains a popular swimming hole. Police were not releasing the name of the deceased at press time.

Playing in the sand can reap benefits this weekend, that is if you are a participant in Creston’s first annual sand sculpture contest. World-class sand sculptor Paul Dawkins is supervising the project on the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre property at the corner of highways 3 and 3A. “There is no need to register ahead,” said Dawkins. “Just show up.” He will provide a free training workshop to anyone who wants it — more confident artists “can wing it.” With 39 years of experience in making sand, snow and ice sculptures on six continents, Dawkins brings plenty of knowledge to his craft. He has amassed 21 medals and five titles in the White Rock and Harrison Hot Springs world sand sculpture championships. See SCULPTURE, page 3
