Volunteers distributed Crime Prevention Notices to 77 vehicles Wednesday, during the Community Policing Office’s “Lock Out Auto Crime Blitz.�

The notices were placed on vehicles that appeared to be at risk of auto crime due to noticeable valuables or unlocked doors. “The Community Policing Office is thrilled with the response from the first [blitz],� said Kelly Donaldson, community policing co-ordinator. “The volunteers engaged the community and were complimented by car owners and pedestrians alike in their efforts to prevent crime and educate the public on how to better protect themselves.�

Due to the event’s success, the CPO plans to conduct regular blitzes.

The blitz was organized in response to the high number of recent break and enters throughout the community.

RCMP arrest suspect Merritt RCMP arrested a 31-year-old male from Squamish in connection with several incidents where a man asked young women for directions and then asked them to get into his vehicle.

Const. Tracy Dunsmore said police arrested him Friday afternoon with a warrant from a community-safety peace bond and were holding him in custody.

Earlier in the week, police warned residents about a man driving a green car approaching Merritt women.

While locking car doors may seem like an obvious prevention measure, many people leave their doors unlocked, which is an invitation to thieves.

Approximately 10 volunteers inspected vehicles in hightraffic areas such as Quilchena Avenue, areas around banks, and at City Furniture and Cooper’s Foods.

The CPO reminds people to instal antitheft devices, such as alarms and steering wheel locks.

Similar blitzes have been conducted in Kelowna, Vernon and Richmond, for example.

Merritt is experiencing a 250 per cent year-over-year hike in the number of break and enters.

Police warn people to remove valuables, and lock doors and windows.

Suspicious activity should be reported to the detachment at 250-378-4262.

Merritt Mayor Susan Roline says council needs to seriously consider budgeting money for a sun shelter in Spirit Square, after two baking hot Clash of the Talents performances had concertgoers dreaming of shade.

The concrete concert venue in Merritt’s downtown core offers little protection from the sun except for a wooden shelter over the stage and most people attending this summer’s talent contest wore sunglasses and sun hats to fend off the rays though some used umbrellas for a little bit of extra cover.

Roline said the original drawings for Spirit Square included plans for a sun shelter; however, there wasn’t enough money for the addition when the project reached that point. “[The shelter] wouldn’t be a permanent structure — it would be made of canvas or tenting material — and would come down depending on the season,” she said. “There had also been talk about putting in a shade system for the artists because depending on the time of day the sun shines directly in their faces.”

The issue came up briefly during a regular council meeting on Aug. 7 when several councillors reported attending the City-sponsored talent

contest, and they commented on the heat. At the time Roline, said a shelter was something council should consider during this year’s budget process.

Later she said she had no idea what the cost would be, adding that the City would need to get a quote prior to budget discussions.

Gordon Campbell (premier at the time) announced funding for Merritt’s Spirit Square in July 2007 as part of the B.C. Spirit Square project in preparation for the province’s 150th anniversary.

Roline said the project cost just over $1 million and included funding from both the federal and provincial governments as well as city contributions such as purchasing the existing buildings and lots where the plaza sits.

The Merritt Walk of Stars Society was instrumental in securing the grants for the project.

Kamloops architect Trevor Owen designed the venue with help from Vanessa Graham.

Spirit Square is a work in progress, said Roline — First Nations artist Les Hampton was contracted to create several pieces of art still in the works, including copper fish that will go in the water fountain and another piece to be displayed near the gazebo.

and recognize that the lack of shade at Spirit Square is a deterrent for some people “I think most councillors would be supportive of [a sun-shelter] because most of them have sat through events there and see how hard it is on people,” she said. “We can’t just say ‘we can’t afford a sun shade so we can’t use Spirit Square anymore.’”

the fountain at a Clash of the Talents performance and questioned whether this was safe.

Public Works Superintendent Darrell Finnigan confirmed that the water was not potable and a sign went up the following week.

“That water is not fresh, potable water — it’s recycled within that fountain,” said Shawn Boven, public works manager. “We add chlorine once in a while to keep it from going green, but it’s not drinking water.”

Boven said if people drink water that is not from the community water system they run the risk of getting sick.

“Ideally people will read the sign and just not drink from the fountain,” he said. “We don’t want to see anybody sick.”

The Merritt School District will have to make more cuts in its 1982 budget because of the new set of restraint guidelines announced by the provincial government.

School board chairman Elmer Reimer said Wednesday that the district will have to find some way to cut another $175,000 out of this year’s budget.

HERALD OPINION A price to pay for U.S. shopping Many Canadian consumers are heading south for an overnight stay and shopping to take advantage of new cross-border allowances and the high dollar.

Cross-border trips in June, the first month the higher exemptions took effect, were up to levels not seen since 1972. Way back then, the dollar was also above par, and U.S. gas prices were also low.

Taking a trip to the U.S. was a breeze.

It seems many are willing to spend the time in border lineups and pay for the extra gas to save about 14 per cent on many items.

They also want access to a wider variety of clothing and other consumables.

The downside is that local retailers are taking a hit, and when they do, they cut back on new hires and those much-hated taxes (which pay for health, education and other important programs) take a hit, as well.

Retailers in border communities like Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford are particularly hardhit.

Canadians are understandably looking for bargains. But there may come a time when the lure of cheaper U.S. products will come back and haunt them.

A long-term decline in retail jobs and declining tax revenue can do some major damage to the B.C. economy.

Tax shortfalls must be made up somewhere, so that means everyone (including cross-border shoppers) will pay more. With fewer jobs, it will be that much harder to pay those added taxes.

More likely, though, as the U.S. economy rebounds as housing sales are cautiously expected to do, the loonie will eventually drop in value.

This will greatly diminish the advantage of shopping down south.

The same fate awaits the Kinder Morgan plan to twin the existing TransMountain oil pipeline to Burnaby. Dix left the impression that he would undo the years of work that have gone into bringing some rational sense to environmental approvals that can be, and have been, dragged out for years.

and more complaints to justify refusal at the provincial level, to go along with court cases and direct-action protests.

Speaking of which, the frontal assault by agitators at the federal Enbridge hearings has mostly petered out. After 4,000-odd people were signed up to speak, most didn’t bother, and some hearings were cancelled.

Apparently slacktivists such as “Jonathan L. Seagull” and “Cave Man” didn’t make it out of their Vancouver basement suites to tell the panel oil is bad.

Professional environmentalists are now wringing their hands over Ottawa’s decision to leave smaller-scale reviews to the province. This means, for example, that there won’t be a duplicate federal review of the urgently needed refit of the John Hart Dam on the Campbell River.

NDP environment critic Rob Fleming hammered away at the B.C. Liberals about this in the spring, reminding them that Auditor General John Doyle had exposed a lack of resources in the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, even before Ottawa’s changes.

Fleming makes it sound like a huge new burden has been dumped on B.C. False.

Provincial assessment already must be done with the participation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, the provincial ministries of natural resources and energy and mines, and of course aboriginal communities.

This is why it’s so long and expensive.

And don’t be fooled into believing that a federal review would go out and count the tadpoles and caribou again.

It’s only the desk jobs that have proliferated.

There weren’t just two levels of duplicate review, but three. Earlier in their mandate, the B.C. Liberals exempted major projects such as mines and energy generation from local government control, citing the “provincial interest” similar to the federal authority over projects that cross provincial borders.

I agree with the NDP that B.C. environmental assessment needs more resources, in particular to do the followup on approved projects, as called for by the auditor general.

Forest management needs more money too. All the more reason not to waste resources on political gestures.

Political deception doesn’t measure timber the right way Dear Editor: Re: Harry Lali MLA Fraser-Nicola, Merritt News, June 29, 2012 After reading Mr. Lali’s misleading statements on blaming the Liberal government for their elimination of “supports” and the resultant loss of high-paying forestry jobs, the public should know that Mr. Lali is more concerned about political self-preservation and deception than truly representing the electorate.

Had Mr. Lali studied lumber markets between 2001 and now, and the effect the sub-prime crisis had on housing starts and lumber demand in America and Canada’s dependency on that market, he would’ve had a better

understanding of economics. Want a government to blame? Look at the administration of George W. Bush, his housing policies and lax approach to banking regulation.

The Mountain Pine Beetle infestation continues on in biblical proportions and I believe our creator is giving us a warning about the way we harvest/manage/measure and utilize the timber resource. The Liberal government allows devaluation of public’s resource; jobs disappear in the name of innovation and efficiency (greed). One of these devaluation policies is the use of timber cruising for the purpose of “setting” payable log grades and measuring timber depletion volumes for the allowable annual cut.

Log scaling and grading means

measuring timber, logs and special forest products for volume and grade to value transactions. Timber is scaled and graded across B.C. by hundreds of log scalers.

A sub-standard measurement that allows plus or minus 12 per cent of net timber volume in a cut block is criminal and an absurd revenue risk to the crown. When log scalers are checkscaled by staff from BCFS, they must be within plus or minus three per cent on volume and value (grade).

In the era of diminishing timber supply we have to ask ourselves “What standard do we want our timber resource measured by?”

Fire ban lifted in Merritt

The campfire ban imposed a week earlier was lifted Friday in Merritt, Kamloops, Salmon Arm and Lillooet.

Kamloops Fire Centre officials said the ban is still in place in all of the Okanagan, including the Penticton and Vernon fire zones.

“This partial rescinding of the campfire ban is due to rain received overnight [Thursday and Friday], resulting in lower fire danger ratings in those areas,” said Michaela Swan, fire information officer.

The ban that is still in place

does not include the use of cooking stoves that use propane, gas, briquettes or portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating and uses briquettes, gaseous fuel and liquid — if the height of the flame doesn’t exceed 15 centimetres.

The Wildfire Management Branch has been called to 65 wildfires over the last week in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Nearly 92 per cent of the blazes were contained to fewer than four hectares.

Approximately 400 crew members were dispatched to fight the flames.

This personnel includes fire wardens, pilots, firefighting

crews, initial attack crews and heavy equipment operators.

Open burning is still prohibited in all areas of the Kamloops Fire Centre.

“This prohibition applies to open fires larger than a halfmetre high by a half-metre wide, fires with a burn registration number, industrial burning, fireworks and burning barrels,” Swan said.

All BC Parks, crown and private lands are covered in the open burning prohibition, though the ban does not apply in local government boundaries with forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by a fire department.

Riding bareback or with an old saddle JEANETTE MCMASTER In FRIENDSHIP Growing up in our village gave us many advantages.

As children we had horses to ride — sometimes bareback or with an old saddle.

Our main social place was on top of a hill we called “skakelt" meaning little mountain. Skakelt is situated right in the center of our reserve, and so we had a view as far as the eye could see.

Facing the lake we could see the Manual homestead, the church, and the corrals with chutes.

During wild horse roundup time our father's, brothers and uncles would get up before dawn and have

their fastest horse ready to ride. Off they went, up the high mountains where the wild horses roamed.

When they found the herd, they would ride the herd back to the reserve and the corrals.

We used to watch for them and when we saw a big cloud of dust on the horizon, we knew they were on their way home.

I can still hear the horses' hooves pounding the ground and their heavy manes flying high as their long beautiful bodies glistened with perspiration. What an amazing sight to behold!

In the meantime, someone at the corrals would have wood ready to start a fire and several branding irons which belonged to families. At a certain time, the fire would be lit and the branding irons placed into the fire.

I would watch for my dad — he wore a Stetson and a red ker-

chief to cover his face as protection from the dust. His horse was easy to recognize from the other riders.

The men put the horses into the corrals, then each would take a turn with a rope. He would choose a wild horse, or two, then he would cast his lasso.

If he caught a young mare with a colt, he had a bonus.

There is a special technique in doing this. The man had to cast his lasso in just the right manner, so that he caught the two hind legs. Then he would tighten the rope so it became taut and the horse would fall. If need be, another man would help by casting his lasso so it caught the horse by the mane and he was able to keep the horse still. No injury was ever done to the horse.

The young helper would run as fast as he could and slide to a stop with dust flying in the air. Another man

would take the branding iron and place it on the horse.

The branding crew were our heroes back then. We would cheer them on and it did not matter that their faces were covered with dust — it made them look like cowboys in action.

During the wild horse roundup, the men would look for fine quality riding horses to use for travel or hunting. Others would look for those who had workhorse qualities to use for hauling heavy equipment. These had to be strong horses, while the riding horses had to be trim and lean yet have strong bones. My dad taught me how to measure a good working horse, and a good riding horse. He taught me many things — I believe he was hoping one day I would take over from him. But that would not happen.

Because I married a non-native man, I lost my inherent right to

my father's land.

Families came together to celebrate during the roundup.

Women brought food, cold tea and home-made bread.

Sometimes, after the branding was all done, there would be a dance at someone’s house.

That was always a lot of fun. There would be music provided by men who had violins, guitars, and accordions. No alcohol was allowed.

I truly believe our Skylix people were very wealthy — we had horses, cattle, range land, lakes and rivers. We never went hungry.

In the book of Psalms 33:12 it says, “Blessed, happy, fortunate, to be envied is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His inheritance."

A new, exciting Merritt Centennials’ season is upon us!

Intersquad games reveal some speed and scoring If Monday night’s Merritt Centennials’ intersquad game was anything like Sunday’s, this year’s Cents’ team may have speed to burn, and a nice knack for finding the back of the net.

The first tilt between Team White and Team Red on Sunday was a bit of a ‘scorefest’ with no fewer than 12 goals on the board at the end of 60 minutes.

Hat trick performances

by Sebastien Pare and rookie Brendan DeVries paced Team White to a 7-5 victory in front of close to 150 fans at Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Pare came over to the Centennials during the offseason with Derek Huisman in a three-way trade that saw former Cent Jakob Reichert go to the Langley Rivermen. DeVries, a native of Smithers, played for the Sicamous Eagles of the KIJHL last season, and averaged close to a point a game.

Bennett Huber had White’s other tally, while Silvan Harper with two, Jeff Wight, Huisman, and Scotty Patterson replied for the Reds.

“Throughout the game, I thought that the pace was really good,” stated Cents’ head coach

and GM Luke Pierce following Sunday’s tilt. “There’s a lot of speed in camp, and the goal-scoring was good. I definitely think that’s going to be a strength of ours this year.”

With just three returning defensemen this season, the reloading of the blueline remains a priority for Pierce and assistant coach Joe Martin.

“I’m happy with what I saw on Sunday. There is definitely a half dozen or so players that we can form a D-corp around. We just need a few of them to step out, and break away from the group.”

Q101 radio - Merritt’s Music Mix - has announced that Graham Turnbull will be the new ‘Voice of the Centennials’ for the upcoming 201213 BCHL season. Turnbull replaces former play-by-play announcer Alex Grebenyuk who has accepted a position as the Director of Media Relations & Broadcasting with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.

Turnbull is no stranger to Merritt, having been with Q101 since October, 2011 as the radio station’s on-air afternoon host. He has also produced a number of features for Centennials’ broadcasts including the WHL Report and the Minor Hockey Minute.

Turnbull has previous hockey playby-play experience with the KIJHL’s Chase Chiefs and Kamloops Storm during the 2011-12 season, and with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express while still a broadcast student at BCIT in 2010-11.

“If you know Graham, then you know that his first passion is hockey and his dream is to be a play-by-play announcer,” stated Q101 Program Manager Taylor Landry. “We’re excited to give him this opportunity to be part of the historic 40th anniversary season of the Merritt Centennials.”

In 105 games as a Centennial, dating back to October, 2010, the New Wesminster, BC native has posted 11 goals and 17 assists to go along with 58 penalty minutes. In 13 career playoff games, he has three goals and three assists and 18 penalty minutes.
