Five-year-old 911 caller earns praise Young girl taught by grandmother how to handle emergency A five-year-old Langford girl is being praised for calling 911 after her mother went into an epileptic seizure at home. On Aug. 15, RCMP dispatcher Chelsea Chang recieved an emergency call from a young child named Rebecca reporting her mother had fallen onto the cement in the backyard and was not getting up. The dispatcher stayed on the line with Rebecca while paramedics went to the scene. While talking, Chang learned that the girl was five years Audio online old, that her father was GoldstreamGazette.com at work and that she was at home with her two younger brothers, aged three and one. “Our dispatcher kept this very upset young girl on the phone, gleaning as much information from her as possible,” West Shore RCMP Cpl. Antonio Hernandez stated in a media release. “This call was high risk and emotionally difficult for this young girl, who needed to hear a friendly, calming and compassionate voice on the phone. She got just that, and together we were able to help her family.” When paramedics arrived they found a 31-year-old woman who had experienced an epileptic seizure. They helped the woman, reportedly now in good health. The girl later told police that her grandma had taught her how to call 911. West Shore RCMP are using the incident to remind people of the importance of teaching children about the emergency line. The family has been invited to come to the station so police can present the young girl with a gift of appreciation for her actions. news@goldstreamgazette.com

Rowing proposal makes waves Municipality and SMUS looking to build new facility on Langford Lake Kyle Wells News staff

A proposed rowing facility could cause troubled waters for users and residents of Langford Lake. Plans by the City of Langford and St. Michaels University School (SMUS) to build a rowing facility on Langford Lake have some residents concerned over the impact to current lake users. The proposal includes building a rowing facility and using the lake for practices. A rowing lane would also run directly up the centre of the lake. Proponents say the move will bring more users to lake, create a rowing community and offer schools in the area the ability to restart long defunct rowing programs. Others are concerned rowers will disrupt other activities on the lake and spoil its usual serene, quiet ambiance.

Rowing season starts in early September and runs until late November, before picking up again in February until the beginning of June. Rowers would use the lake most school days from roughly 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., along with some early morning training in the spring and some weekend training during the school year. Lakefront property owner Peter Ash has written an open letter to Langford opposing the rowing concept. He found out about the proposal by way of a pamphlet Langford distributed to lakefront property owners. He believes the community at large should be made aware of the idea and be able to have a say. “It kind of limits the knowledge base of what they’re attempting to do,” Ash said. The project will be paid for entirely by SMUS and will come at no additional cost to Langford taxpayers. Langford will provide funding for community use of the facility through the Amenity Reserve Fund. PLEASE SEE: Rowers eye Langford Lake, Page A10
