Encouraging self-propelled commuting Langford’s transportation network expands with more bicycle lanes Charla Huber News staff

When Langford Coun. Lillian Szpak arrived home on July 12, she felt like it was Christmas morning. The avid cyclist was floored that Treanor Avenue was freshly painted with bike lane signage. She knew the lanes were coming, but didn’t know when to expect them.

Szpak cycles everywhere, and it’s not uncommon to see her zipping to a meeting in a business suit and peddling with heels on. The bike lanes on Treanor Avenue aren’t just for people commuting in Langford – one of Szpak’s favourite routes is Treanor Avenue to the Phelps Trail which connects her to the Galloping Goose trestle. The magic of the route is “no highway,” Szpak said with excitement. “I am not a fast cyclist. From my door to the (Capital Regional District headquarters) or Victoria City Hall is about an hour,” Szpak added. “But when you factor in the traffic it’s the same as driving.”

Langford is currently creating a transportation network for its residents to promote alternative modes of getting around. Last year Langford added eight kilometres of new bike lanes throughout the city. “Anywhere there is a road wide enough to put a bike lane, we will,” said Coun. Lanny Seaton, adding the road needs to be busy enough to warrant one. All main roads in Langford, such as Goldstream, Jenkins and Jacklin avenues and Veterans Memorial Parkway, have bike lanes.
