Small, black SUV flees after hitting Agassiz woman Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

An Agassiz woman who was struck by a vehicle while crossing on a pedestrian light this week is hoping the driver who hit her will come forward.

Sara Green, 28, was crossing Cheam Avenue, from where she works at Oasis Coffee Bistro to the SuperValu, in order to pick up some supplies for the bistro.

She said the walk light was on so she headed across. A black, smallerstyle SUV entered the intersection from Evergreen, turning right onto Cheam.

"She just kept on driving," Green

said, ignoring the fact a pedestrian was crossing. The vehicle struck Green in the knee, hard enough to knock her off her feet. The driver, described as an elderly woman with grey hair and glasses, didn't stop.

Green moved away quickly to avoid being run over by the vehicle's back tires.

No other drivers stopped to assist Green, and she said she isn't sure if it was witnessed by others.

"It's such a blur," she said.

The incident happened at about 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7. Green was taken to the hospital for x-rays.

While nothing is broken, she is limping and heavily bruised.

Despite the injury, she was back at work by Wednesday on lighter duties as advised by a doctor. Green, who was working her first day at the Agassiz coffee shop, said the incident could have been worse had she been walking with her small children, pushing a stroller in front of her.

It's incredible that the driver didn't see her, she added; Green has flourescent pink hair.

Police are also hoping that the driver will come forward, or that witnesses to the incident will report any further details.

Green's employer, Reese Ollmann, said in the two years that she has owned Oasis it has become

commonplace to hear honking and screeching tires at that intersection that is just a few feet from her front door.

"That corner is hopping busy, and dangerous," she said. "Four or five times a day we hear squealing tires."

And it's not just from four-wheeled traffic.

"We joke about the big rigs that go around that corner," she said. "They cut it so tight we move back."

At the regular council meeting on July 23 Mayor Van Laerhoven presented the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting (CAnFR) plaque for the year ending Dec. 31, 2010 to Glen Savard, Director of Financial Services. The CAnFR recognizes excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a municipal government and its management. Savard has achieved this important recognition the last four years.

Missing Hope girl found Jessica Janis Webber, 16, has been found in Alberta.

Police issued a plea to the public in late July to help find the Hope teen.

She was last seen in Hope on July 8, and then in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

The last time she was heard from, she contacted a friend on July 17 to confirm she was in Alberta.

A police statement noted that Webber “lives a high risk lifestyle and has gone missing on several occasions.�

But she had not contacted her family in a long time, spurring the public plea.

Webber attended the Lethbridge RCMP detachment on Tuesday, August 7, and is no longer considered missing.

Home plate bylaw up for discussion Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

The District of Kent is looking at adopting a farm home plate bylaw, which will address issues such as the location of homes on farmland.

Staff and council held a public open on July 30 to discuss the matter.

The bylaw includes a list of proposed changes, as developed through consultation with the Kent Agricultural Advisory Committee.

Home plate bylaws refer to the placing of a house on the outside edge of a property, similar to the home plate on a baseball diamond.

As presented, the District's bylaw states that one side of the farm home plate must be located along a dedi-

cated road, and approved employee dwellings must also be in that area.

It also sets a maximum area of .5 acres for a home plate, and up to .125 acres more if an employee residence is on the farm. The area which can be used for a floor plan for a home would also be restricted.

Outbuildings and other areas related to the home would also be required to be located on the home plate, including attached garages, yards and decorative landscaping, swimming pools, tennis courts, workshops, household greenhouses and more. The District's presentation states that putting all the residential usage in one corner of a farming lot increases the area avail-

able for farming. A similar bylaw is in place in Delta. Communities with a bylaw in a draft process are Kent, Surrey and Abbotsford.

There would be a leniency for current homes that are destroyed, with the ability to rebuild in the same location, through a development variance permit. There will also be options for farmers to make a case to move their home plate, if it is more beneficial to agricultural viability.

District staff is now reviewing public comments, and preparing recommendations to be taken to the Agricultural Advisory Committee.

A public questionnaire is available online at www.district.kent.bc.ca until Friday, Aug.10.

Many fantastic performers have brought music to Agassiz throughout the summer, thanks to the Pioneer Park Twilight Concert Series. And finishing up the series next Wednesday is one of Agassiz’s favourite musicians, Andrew Christopher.

True fans will know that he is the lead singer of Pardon My Striptease, and that has only recently changed to a stage name, from Andrew Putt.

He is also the father of Lilee Jean, whose ongoing struggles with an aggressive form of cancer have been documented in the media. The band has supported “LJ” in her journey, and has raised thousands of dollars for Childrens’ Hospital in the process.

The proud father was out of the country this week, but answered a few questions for The Observer via Facebook to help his fans get caught up on his life. Read on, and then come out to Pioneer Park next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy the music.

Observer: Why did you change your name?

Andrew: It was partly a privacy thing. Now that I have a family and am getting more and more attention from people I don’t really know I’d like to keep my personal life a bit more private! And partly because some people think i say ‘Butt’ when i say ‘Putt.’

Observer: Who have you been performing with lately, and is Pardon My Striptease still going strong?

Andrew: PMS is still doing great! We have played close to 10 different fundraising shows for Childrens’ Hospital and cancer research since coming back from the break I took with LJ. Now we are playing/booking some more ‘normal’

shows to help fund our next CD! I’ve also been playing a few more solo shows around Vancouver/Lower Mainland, and busking out on Granville Island this summer a bit, and that has been incredible!

Observer: What has been your best gig so far?

Andrew: My best gig so far was our ‘Comeback For the Cure’ show at Joe’s Apartment in Vancouver.

It was PMS’ first show in six months since LJ got sick. It was just SO nice to get back on stage and the crowd was unbelievable.

Observer: Who will you be bringing with you to the Pioneer Park show?

Andrew:NextWednesday will be mainly a solo show. I’ll check what the other guys are doing; maybe we will have a few ‘special guests.’

Observer: What kind of music can people expect to hear?

Andrew: I play such a wide range of tunes, Some really fun, sing-along stuff, and some really deep, meaningful songs, too. I’ll make sure it’s a good mix that everyone likes. It will be mostly covers with a good amount of original tunes thrown in.

Observer: With your growing success, what advice do you have for young musician?

Andrew: Learn from everyone, and everything that you can. In every situation you get into there is something to be learned, so pay attention and apply it to your own life. AND! There are gonna be a few ‘haters’ — listen to them too. Do the opposite of what they say, and then call them stupid in your songs. Surround yourself with people who support you in your dream.

Observer: How has growing up in a small town helped you in your adult life?

Andrew: Growing up in a small town was one of the biggest blessings of my life. Everything that has gone on in the last year has been made so much easier because of the support I had from this small town. It brings me to tears thinking about it. I’m so proud of who i am because of growing up in Agassiz, and I’m so thankful that Agassiz is full of such beautiful people. Small town people have the biggest hearts!

Plastic pick-up next week Dairy farmers urged to join FVRD pilot project Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

There is one more agricultural plastics pick-up for Agassiz area farmers.

The round up will be on Aug. 14 and 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the municipal gravel pit on Cemetery Road.

Drop-off is free of charge, and open to all dairy farmers in the

District of Kent. The plastic will then be sent for recycling, in an effort to reduce the amount of agricultural plastics being sent to the landfill or burned on farm.

A large majority of local farmers are using the service, FVRD has reported. Those farmers are using a variety of methods to store the plastics on their farms between pick ups.

The pilot program is wrapping up, but has received some positive feedback from the farming community and the government, Stacey Barker with FVRD recently stated.

Donna Bellingham began work with the District this week. Born and raised in Vancouver, Bellingham moved to the

South Cariboo in 1984 and has called 100 Mile House her home since then. She has worked in banking, real estate book keeping, and conveyancing until starting her career in local government in 1998.

She commenced her career in local government with the District of 100 Mile House in 2001, obtaining her Municipal Administration Training Institute Certification, followed by her Local Government Ad-

The ‘other Larry’ heads into retirement

Agassiz paramedic Larry Ekman lists bringing patients back from the dead as the most satisfying part of his 30 year career.

Contrary to popular fiction, resuscitation from cardiac arrest actually has a low survival percentage. “That’s why it was so gratifying in the sense that it was what they call it the ‘good save,’� he said, adding it was even better when those folks would go on to live normal, happy lives afterward.

The newly-retired Ekman reflected back on three decades with BC Ambulance, 18 of which were spent in busy Vancouver, two in Chilliwack, and the previous decade in Agassiz.

He said he always knew he wanted to be a paramedic years before getting into the service after beginning with industrial first aid and working as a lifeguard.

Former partner Larry Kennedy, who retired in 2010, worked by Ekman’s side for eight years.

Because they were both named Larry, the pair became well-known in the community.

But Kennedy said it was kind of fun to have the same first name as his partner. “Not that we got any complaints over the years but if anybody did say anything we’d just say, ‘oh, it was Larry,’� he said, adding they even look a little alike.

Kennedy said Ekman was an excellent partner and came to think of him as his wingman, a military term adopted in the ambulance service. Whoever is driving that day is the wingman because the second paramedic is attending the patient in the rear, he said. “I don’t think some people understand what it’s like to go to work and know that somebody’s always got your back, and is looking out for you.�

Ekman said working in Agassiz was always varied and interesting, with the possibility of calls to the Coquihalla toll booth,

Harrison Lake, Hemlock Mountain, or even the rare helicopter trip to Royal Columbian hospital in New Westminster. “I loved the job because when I went to work I didn’t know what I was going to be doing that day.�

Another fun part of the job was delivering those sudden bundles of joy in the back of the ambulance or at a patient’s home, when baby wouldn’t wait for mommy to get to the hospital.

Working in a small community like Agassiz was a mixed blessing for Ekman, who said he would sometimes have to attend emergency calls of people he knew. “That’s always been a difficult part for any paramedic when you work in a community, especially if you’ve been there for a while and you get to know people,� he said.

Although they’re both now retired, the two Larrys still plan to hang out together and both have cabins on the same lake in the Interior. “I’m pretty excited about gearing down and turning a page in my life,� said Ekman, adding it’s a nice feeling to pass on his spot to the next generation of enthusiastic paramedics.

Opinion Robinson sentence must be appealed The sentence handed down to former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson is a disgrace.

It leaves the justice system in ill repute. Everyone involved in this obstruction of justice case should do all they can to see that the sentence is changed to more properly fit the crime, and the criminal.

Robinson was the officer in charge of a four-man RCMP squad who Tasered Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski to death at the Vancouver Airport in October, 2007.

One year later, in October, 2008, he was at a party in South Delta. He left and, while driving home, struck and killed a 21-year-old motorcyclist, Orion Hutchinson.

Robinson had his children in the car and immediately left the scene of the crash with them. He went home, downed several shots of vodka, and then returned to the scene.

He was charged and eventually convicted of obstruction of justice because he made it impossible for Delta Police to collect evidence regarding impaired driving. He never pleaded guilty, but stretched the case out all the way. At his trial

in February, court was told he had previously told friends how to beat an impaired driving charge.

Robinson still faces a charge of perjury over his testimony to the Braidwood Commission, established following the Dziekanski death.

On July 27, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Janice Dillon gave Robinson a 12-month conditional sentence on the obstruction of justice charge. One month is to be served under house arrest. He received no jail time.

Dillon’s sentence completely glossed over the fact that Robinson was an RCMP officer. As such, any conviction on an obstruction of justice charge is far more serious than in other circumstances.

She also said he deserved a lighter sentence because he is of native extraction, a statement that has drawn scorn from numerous aboriginal leaders.

The sentence must be appealed.

It cannot be allowed to stand, if we truly believe that police must be held to a higher standard than other citizens when they are convicted of breaking the law.

Pipeline posturing doesn’t help B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hard-line approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September.

Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to cross-examine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan.

That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s highprofile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into

the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax.

Clark’s demands for “worldleading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides.

Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition.

There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk.

But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier

of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring.

Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years.

The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable?

Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. With a tenfold increase to 25 tankers a month proposed to sail under the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that

trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for neardaily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade.

An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds.

Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming.

Mailbag Time to start cashing in on parking premium When are we going to make a positive decision on the installation of parking meters in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs?

"Enough is enough".

Does the Chamber of Commerce run this Village or does the Mayor and Council?

Today (Sunday, Aug. 5) I am witnessing the game of "parking space roulette" by a huge traffic flow of motorists who are jockeying for a prime view of Harrison Lake together with a very well developed and expensive foreshore on Esplanade all for free.

Not a dime is being spent by our welcome visitors to the Village (other than at the local ice cream store) and they get to bring along their bags of out-of-town goodies and their barbeques (although the latter was not allowed in Block three).

Just think of the amount of potential parking meter revenue that is being lost to the Village simply because Council does not have a say and/or the C of C runs this Village.

As a bonus, the local taxpayer gets to foot the bill for the beach

clean-up after our welcome noncontributing guests have left town.

The time has come to install parking meters in this beautiful Village without further petitions, traffic counts, C of C surveys or immature input.

If you are happy with your property taxes continually rising each year, please ignore this letter.

Refer to the the White Rock's parking meter initiative if you would like to be exposed to a real success story.

Development must not be stopped I find it ironic that people that live in newer homes and areas of Harrison that once were crowded with trees and developed by developers complain that THEY

don't want any further development! I guess they must be super rich and don't want their home to increase in value and want Harrison to be changed into a +55

Customer service commended by travelers I hope you print letters to the editor in your paper, as I would love your readers to know about an Agassiz business.

Two weeks ago our daughter was retrurning to North Van from our home in Kamloops in our Jeep which broke down on the highway.

She called BCAA who immediately dispatched Fred from Modern Tire & Towing who went to her rescue right away and looked after her and her dog.

The Jeep had to stay in Fred's shop till he fixed it, so we went down from Kamloops a few days later to pick it up and carry on to North Van for a visit. On the way home our Jeep began making a strange noise, and as we were close to Agassiz again we went back into Fred's shop. We joked about not planning on seeing each other again, then Fred determined it was the water pump, and it likely would not make it home to Kamloops.

As it was closing time for him, we inquired about a motel or place to stay so it could be repaired in the morning. Fred replied that even though he was closing, he did not like to see traveller's like us stuck, so he and his mechanic stayed for several hours and fixed it so we could continue home that evening.

Just when you think the real meaning of customer service is a thing of the past, along comes people like Fred and his staff who offer the fantastic service that he did. He could have directed us to a motel, but instead on his time he looked after us. This man and his business are a real treasure to the good people of Agassiz and district, he made what could have been an unpleasant experience a real treat for us, and for that we cannot commend him enough.

Paving the way to cheaper taxes The previous two Councils were criticized for a lack of growth and non-development within the village.

Now this Council is progressing with Mr. Kingma's revised and greatly reduced development plans along the Hot Springs Road, they have been criticised by a small-minded minority for considering this development.

The village needs growth from new residents to support and sustain the existing businesses, services

and contribute towards village taxes which are needed to maintain our deteriorating infrastructure (roads, sewer line, street lighting etc).

Residents of this village need to ask themselves one question: Do I wish Harrison to be a vibrant resort village or a retirement home with higher taxes and fewer services, because they will become unaffordable on the current level of taxes that are being charged currently.

Caesar Salad Ingredients: 1 large head romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 large cloves garlic, peeled 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dry mustard 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup shaved or shredded Parmesan cheese Directions: Crush the garlic cloves & salt into a paste in a large salad bowl.

Add the Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, lemon juice & pepper.

Whisk in the remaining oil until thoroughly combined.

Add the grated Parmesan cheese & whisk again until combined.

Add the shredded lettuce & toss thoroughly. Top with shaved or shredded Parmesan cheese. Serve.

More good news about potatoes Ever since I wrote about King Frederic the Great and the notso-humble potato, I have read and heard more and more fascinating stories and facts about them.

In fact, I think that the potato is perhaps the one vegetable fthat has had the greatest impact in the history of mankindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-being!

When I recently looked through my cookbook collection I came across one that was given to me by a friend and fellow chorister: Betty Allen. It was written by Bettyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cousin, Agnes ToewsAndrews and is titled, The Incredible Potato. It is, of course, all about potatoes: recipes, health facts and tips plus more fascinating stories.

Cook a sausage patty for each latke, place it on latke, making a well in the center with the back of the spoon.

Songbird touches down in Harrison Cover Me Canada contestant performs tonight Ali Milner, a past contestant on Cover Me Canada, is coming to Harrison Hot Springs.

The singer will perform at the Layback Lounge tonight (August 10) as she tours and performs around B.C. Fans of the CBC hit show will remember Milner as the redhead with the smooth voice who sang Black Velvet with Canadian rocker Alannah Myles. She made it through eight weeks of the television series, placing third.
