Rash of bike thefts

Police warn owners to lock them up NEIL HORNER

The fine summer weather experienced by District 69 residents is perfect for riding a bike, but as the local RCMP note, it’s also perfect for going for a ride on bicycles that don’t belong to you. Corporal Jesse Foreman said Monday bike thieves have been active in the Wembley Road area over the past few days. “It looks like we had quite a rash on both Friday and Saturday nights,” he said, noting several vehicles were also entered and rifled through. “Lots of people just leave their bikes out in the yard or on the patio or even in the back yard at this time of year,” he said. Foreman urged bicycle owners to lock their rides at night, regardless of how seemingly secure they might appear. As well, he urged drivers to both lock their doors and remove all valuables prior to leaving their vehicles for the night.

Local Paralympics star Michelle Stilwell was given a formal send off by Parksville council Monday. “We are all very proud of you,” said mayor Chris Burger as he listed off some of her numerous records and accomplishments including being the only Paralympic woman to win gold at two different games. Stilwell appeared almost embarrassed by the attention as she admitted she’d broken the 100 metre world record

Stilwell, who lived in Nanoose Bay for years, proudly told council she now lives in Parksville and has been “welcomed to the community and embraced warmly.” She spoke of how fast the four years since the last Summer Games went and some of extensive training and preparation she’s doing to shave hundredths of seconds off her time.
