A 47-year-old Parksville woman is likley breathing a big sigh of relief this week after the Crown stayed all charges against her in an alleged murder for hire case. The ordeal for Suzanne Brendeland began last August 27, when she was arrested for allegedly plotting to have her estranged husband, killed in a murder-for-hire plot. The charges stem from an August 23 report to police by her 40-year-old estranged husband, Randy Brendeland, who said he believed his wife was trying to hire people to kill him. A police investigation into the claim turned up two local men who confirmed they were approached by a woman who tried to hire them to kill her husband. Neither of the men reportedly accepted the offer. Police said the couple separated just over one year ago and their disputes appear to have been escalating over that period. The estranged couple filed divorce papers in family court in July. Randy Brendeland worked as a fitness instructor, while Suzanne Brendeland worked until recently at a moving and storage company. They moved to Vancouver Island in 2009. Although the charges have been stayed, that doesn’t mean the case has been thrown out and it could be brought forward at a later date, should new evidence arise. Because of this, a publication ban on evidence brought forward in the case remains in place.

Water restrictions on tap AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
While the current hot dry weather is perfect for the beach, the City of Parksville is moving to Water Conservation Level 3 to ensure a steady supply. Under the system coordinated with the Regional District of Nanaimo last year, the city is on Level 2 restrictions automatically during the summer unless conditions call for more. On July 18 the city moved to Level 3, the toughest restriction next to a complete ban. This allows one hour of watering at a time for a total of
two hours on specified days between 6 - 10 a.m. and 6 10 p.m. Odd numbered addresses can water on odd numbered days, even numbered on even days. Multi-unit buildings can divide the watering by unit number or irrigation zone to ensure the net effect is half the watering is done in two hours each day. This requires prior written consent of the city. Vegetable gardens, shrubs, trees and flowers can only be watered with a hand held container or a hose with a shutoff nozzle outside the permitted times. Vehicles, RVs and boats may be washed with a hand held container or shutoff nozzle hose.
