The officers received reports of the shooting and are trying to find the very young cubs, which will not survive on their own.

“Most people are aware that it is both technically and ethically wrong. I am sure other people must have passed the men who shot her, as there would have been miners going on and off shift.”

described as both in their mid 20s to early 30s, in a newer blue Dodge truck, which was parked by Corbin Road.

It is black bear hunting season until June 30, but hunters need a licence and a tag, and are not allowed to shoot sows with cubs.

The two cubs are believed to have been born just this year, and are not likely to survive long without their mother.

“Conservation officers received some information and responded,

then found evidence at the scene,” said Burley.

“Ideally we want the suspects to come forward themselves as soon as possible. A lot of people are really outraged by this. We hope either the suspects or witnesses will come forward soon.”

Academy show goes down like Greased Lightning

Flood warning issued for the Elk River

A

flood warning was issued on Tuesday for the Elk Valley, after heavy rain had the B.C. Rivers Forecast Centre concerned about flooding.

Although already on a flood watch, the valley’s potential for flooding was upgraded to 'significant’ on Tuesday

morning due to significant rises in river levels, then upgraded further to a flood warning that evening after 35 mm of rain fell during the day, with another 25 mm expected Tuesday night.

The advisory from the centre on Tuesday evening read, “Significant rainfall has already occurred in the East Kootenay over the past six to eight hours, with significant and rapid river level rises expected overnight

and into the early morning.

“Flood conditions are expected throughout tributary rivers in the East Kootenay, including the Elk River at Fernie.”

As The Free Press went to print on Tuesday night, the advisory was still in effect.

However, Environment Canada was forecasting a drying trend towards the end of the week.

lkford is gearing up for one of their biggest annual celebrations, Wildcat Days. From June 29 to July 2, Elkford residents and visitors will be having plenty of fun participating in and watching many different events. With everything from tug of wars to go carts, live bands to slip and slides there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Special this year will be one of the first events of the weekend. The Preschool Dance, from 5 to 6 p.m. will be the first formal event to be held in the new Elkford Community

Conference Centre. "And very fitting," commented Mayor McKerracher at the grand opening ceremony.

The annual SMS Charity Poker Tournament will take place on Friday at 5 p.m. with SMS donating 50 per cent of all proceeds to the Elkford Sled Dog Society. Friday evening will see inflatables, a scavenger hunt, and fireworks lighting up the sky at dusk.

A pancake breakfast will kick off Saturday and all those attending can fill their day with many fun filled events.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and local arts, crafts and creations can be found all day

at the craft and trade fair. Kids will be amazed at the events taking place on Saturday afternoon with a reptile show, air brush tattoos, a clown and cotton candy booth just a few things happening. The nightlife will kick off at sunset with live bands and good parties at all of the local watering holes.

As the weekend winds down, the fun keeps happening with Sunday seeing Canada Day celebrations. With face painting, free swimming, slo-pitch and more, Elkford welcomes all to Wildcat Days!

Training Betsy in kids’ play therapy

A

puppy is being trained by a Fernie woman to help children using play therapy.

CAPT, or Canine Assisted Play Therapy, is a type of child therapy in the form of clinical social work.

Eleven-week-old Betsy, a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, is undergoing training to

do such work at Fernie Counselling and Consulting.

Betsy is being trained to be a psychiatric service dog for our community. In the next year she shall receive training from Cheryl Hulburd MSW RSW, a clinical social worker and Play Therapy candidate, as well as local dog trainers, Denise McKay and Cathy Smith-Clark. Betsy will continue training for Play Therapy purposes and other community based

Cranbrook Food Bank building new 4000 square foot warehouse Black Press Staff

A

new 4,000 square foot warehouse is currently being built in Cranbrook to better store food and supplies for the food bank.

The food bank provides 4,500 hampers per year to Cranbrook and area, including Jaffray, Wardner, Yahk and RDEK Area C. The new space will help the society become more financially sustainable by reducing operational costs. This larger warehouse facility also enables local community donations to go further because of optimized storage systems, and the society will be able to purchase more bulk items, reducing the overall costs of food purchases.

The society has been fundraising toward this goal since 2007 and is excited to move into the new space at the end of June. “We would like to thank all of our contributors for making this new space a reality, including Columbia Basin Trust, Lions Club, Rotary Club, community member donations and Miller Custom Builders, who are providing their services at a reduced rate,� said Brian Smith, Director, Cranbrook Food Bank.

CAPT puppies begin training by being handled by a variety of people to get them used to and accustomed to interacting with many people from an early age, and are taken into public facilities of all kinds such as airports, bus stations, restaurants and shopping malls. Her intensive training will entail a number of different activities and interactions that are used to accomplish

therapeutic goals. These brief activities are tailored to the child’s personality and therapeutic needs. In addition to the extensive activities training, the dogs that successfully complete the training are able to remain calm even under conditions of high stress and chaos.

Please don’t be afraid to ask to pet our little bundle of fluff in hopes that she will, one day, be able to walk down the streets of Fernie as a registered service dog.

Easy riders at the Slow Mo Rodeo

he Slo Mo Rodeo (Kids With Cancer Motorcycle Tour) arrived at Fernie Alpine Resort on Thursday, June 21.

Over 100 riders from all over Alberta took part in the four-day tour which started in Red Deer and

visited Canmore, before coming to Fernie for a night at Lizard Creek Lodge. When the riders arrived at Fernie Alpine Resort they participated in the fun ‘Slo Mo Rodeo,’ a test of their balance and motorcycle handling skills at slow speed.

The annual fundraising event for the organization has raised over $1 million dollars to date and 100 per cent of the participant pledges go directly to support children with cancer and their families enabling the organization to provide more than 40 programs and services.

lk Valley groups have been working together to create a healthier Elk River.

On May 30, 41 participants from various industries, organizations, and governments all agreed to work together in mapping out a plan that will reduce the stress being put on the river.

“We all depend on this river,” said Lee-Anne Walker, organizer of the event, “it’s the lifeblood of our communities.

Everyone has a role to play in deciding its drinkable, fishable, and swimmable future.”

The workshop began by providing participants with information about the Elk during a virtual

flyover, which flew from the headwaters at Petain Glacier to the river's mouth at Lake Koocanusa.

The group then generated dialogue and learned from one another, discussing concerns and possible solutions that would help residents and users of the Elk River to live within the river's natural limits.

The main discussions revolved around how to prevent selenium and nitrate pollution from local mining and how to reconcile the positive effects of a growing economy with the harms caused by the continual rise in both residential and touristic use of the river.

Participants expressed a desire for the formation

of a watershed council for the Elk River, similar to the Fraser Basin Council or Okanagan Water Board, to help solve these issues.

“True collective action will happen,” said Walker, “when decision makers fulfil their role for areas in their control and demonstrate r e s p o n s i b i l i t y, accountability, and transparency in stewardship of a healthy watershed.”

Interested parties, along with all levels of government, are invited to the Elk River Alliance focus group on October 3 to initiate a formal planning process, and to begin the formation of an Elk River watershed council.

Water Smart Ambassador The District of Elkford has hired Scott Maartman as our Water Smart Ambassador for the summer. The Columbia Basin Water Smart Initiative (Water Smart), developed by CBT, helps local governments assess their water conservation needs and develops plans to reduce community water consumption. The District of Elkford is committed to reducing its water use by 20 per cent by 2015.

From May to August, Water Smart Ambassadors will be carrying out residential irrigation audits and promoting water conservation awareness and education.

2012 Property Tax Notices, Annual Utility Notices & Home Owner Grant Applications

The District of Elkford 2012 Property Tax Notices and the 2012 Residential Utility Notices will be mailed out by May 25th, 2012.

If you do not receive your notice by the end of the first week of June, please contact the District Office.

To avoid the 10% penalty, all payments and eligible Home Owner Grants must be received before: July 3, 2012 at 4:00 pm If your financial institution makes your property tax payment and if you are eligible, you will still need to claim your annual Home Owner Grant and also pay your annual utilities notice (water, sewer, solid waste) before July 3. Unclaimed Home Owner Grants and unpaid utilities are also subject to the 10% penalty.

The District Office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. We will be closed for the statutory holiday Monday July 2, 2012.

Fawning Season Residents are encouraged to exercise both caution and common sense this spring, as the fawning season approaches for deer.

Late May through June is historically the time of year does give birth to their fawns. Does will drive away their offspring from the previous year and look for a secluded place to give birth. Deer have one or two fawns per year and triplets do occur once in a while. It is quite common for does to leave fawns hidden while they forage in the area, returning occasionally to nurse.

If you come across a fawn, it is best to leave it alone. It is also important for residents to remember that does with fawns can be quite aggressive. Please do not approach deer or their fawns. If your presence creates a response from the deer, like a change in stance, ear position or physical movement, you are too close.

Give the deer plenty of space to either move or leave the area.

Do not walk closer to the deer, choose another route. Be sure to walk your dog on a leash and be ready to let go of the leash if a deer attacks.

Any acts of deer aggression where public safety is at risk should be reported.

Spring is the best opportunity we have to prevent bears from learning bad habits by ensuring that our properties are free of attractants (garbage, dirty BBQ’s and bird feeders). If bears get the upper hand early by feeding in our back yards, it will be hard to make them wild again.

After a long cold winter and high snow pack, bears are just starting to emerge from their dens. The cold and wet spring has delayed new plant growth. Bears will typically feed on plants, berries and bugs; however, they are natural scavengers and will travel great distances to find food.

At home: Please ensure that garbage containers supplied by the District of Elkford are kept indoors until collection day and all other bear attractants are secured.

Hiking and Biking: Make noise to warn bears of your presence, watch for fresh bear signs and travel in groups in daylight. If you meet a bear, back away slowly and leave. Do not run. Give the bear space to escape.

High school students in the valley are graduating this week, and they are faced with a tougher job market than many of us were when we graduated.

Although job prospects are improving, new graduates will have to work hard to compete in a fairly slow market.

But no matter what the economic times are, society is expecting our graduates to grow up, train for a job and become productive citizens.

That is a worthy and necessary goal, but, graduates, don’t get disheartened if it takes a little time, and don’t let your job define you.

There are many dimensions to you that you haven’t even begun to explore in the short time you’ve been alive. Find them, embrace them, and become that well-rounded person you haven’t yet discovered.

Be the kind of friend who is reliable, supportive and compassionate. Make your families proud not because you’ve “made it� financially, but because you turned out to be a caring, responsible adult.

Don’t forget to have fun. Life is too short to be consumed by the daily grind. I remember someone making a comment to me in passing once, “Nobody ever lay on their death bed and said ‘I wish I’d spent more time at work.’�

I thought about that a lot afterwards, and try, at least occasionally, to make sure my job isn’t always my primary focus. Chase your goals and dreams, whatever they are. If you’ve always wanted to climb the Great Wall of China, work towards doing that. If you dream of living on the beach, work towards that.

Work hard, of course, but remember that success is not necessarily defined by money, career or social status.

Stoke your passions and pursue your dreams, realizing that achieving them requires an investment of time and effort. Travel. You don’t have to backpack for five years, but just go outside your comfort zone, and area code once in a while, and get a different perspective on the town and country where you live. Make yourself happy, because nobody else will. And work hard to achieve your dreams, because nobody will hand them to you.

Everybody has the power to make a difference. That doesn’t mean curing cancer or brokering world peace. Some of you will go on to professional greatness; others will lead more modest lives, mostly under the radar. The world needs all of you. If you work hard towards achieving your dreams, don’t let society ever make you feel like a failure.

Mr. Visentin, The Weed Doctor, is resorting to scare tactics that he accuses his opposition of indulging in. ‘Infestations,’ ‘unmanageable.’ And descending to near name calling.

Perhaps his is a generic letter for all the East and West Kootenays and in that case there could be some truth in his accusations in regions that I am not familiar with. As this letter is in The Free Press I feel I can speak to it here.

In the Elk Valley and South Country I see NO insect infestations that require control by cosmetic pesticides (those that local bylaws are restricting.) The ‘weed infestations’ that I see are a) in yards that were kept this way 10

or even 20 years ago and b) properties that are temporarily vacant or untended for reasons of health or absence.

My reason for supporting a ban on cosmetic use of pesticides is contained in his statement "there is no need to worry about exposure to pesticides on lawns (or in pools) when the directions for use are followed.� The fact of the matter is that few private users of cosmetic pesticides follow the directions at every use. (I haven't seen coveralls, boots, gloves, eye protection and breathing equipment other than on farmers and commercial operators.)

I admit I regard dandelions as a food source and a very pretty flower for their short blooming season and that I regard clover as an excellent lawn and a terrific source of free nitrogen fertilizer.

In conclusion, mow high (so the mower will not damage a full pop can laying on it's side) use a mulching mower, dig weeds that want to take more than their share of space, water deeply when needed and fertilize if necessary.

PS my cousin just sold half his farm to a neighbour who has been farming organically for the past 15 or so years. The other half to a conventional farming neighbour. I look forward to seeing the results in 10 years.

Make helmets part of every day 3 Facts

I

t was Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 8:11 a.m. I will never forget the words, "Your husband has had a fall and is being transported to Fernie hospital. You better come immediately."

February 28, 2012, again, words that still haunt me, "Your daughter has fallen on the ski hill and is being transported to Cranbrook hospital by ambulance with a head injury."

We had always purchased helmets for our kids growing up on the Kimberley ski hill but once they became teeagers all we could do was trust that they wore them. That day in emergency the ambulance attendants and doctors confirmed that it was that helmet that prevented Abi from a potentially disasterous accident.

Eleven months previously Joe had fallen from a machine at the mine where he was a heavy duty mechanic and sustained a basal skull fracture and frontal lobe brain injury.

The brain injury staff at Foothills told us this was going to be a marathon recovery and it has taken the expertise of specialist doctors, nursing staff, physical therapists, occupational therapists, counsellors and community support services.

The bottom line is that brains need to be protected and in these two cases both were wearing helmets but injuries still occur and it’s a life-changing experience. I am privileged to be working with East Kootenay Brain injury association and we have so much to offer. June is Brain Injury Awareness month. The seven-year-old has always had long

hair, but after her Auntie Jen told her about how people with cancer sometimes lose their hair, Saige decided to help.

She went for a drastic hair cut on June 4, and donated a 12 inch poytail.

Fernie • A black bear was reported by the Brick House on Second Avenue in Fernie just after midnight on June 24. Bears are still accessing unsecured garbage on Ridgemont Drive and Slalom Drive.

Bear Aware and volunteers have been out monitoring unsecured garbage.

Residences with garbage stored outside between collection days potentially attracting bears and jeopardizing the safety of the community have been visited in areas with reported bear activity. Bear Aware information was left at the door if residents were not home and addresses are being recorded.

Please be reminded that it is unlawful to store unsecured garbage outdoors in the city of Fernie.

Consolidated Waste Regulation Bylaw No. 1845 states • It is unlawful to place your garbage on the curb prior to 5 a.m. on the day of collection.

• It is unlawful to accumulate, place or store wildlife attractants (garbage, food products, food waste and other accessible, edible products or waste that attracts wildlife) under your carport, on your deck, in your backyard or in such a manner as to promote an increase in bear activity, thereby creating a risk to the safety of the public in the neighbourhood or vicinity.

• Commercial waste dumpsters containing wildlife attractants must be kept closed during the day and secured at the end of each business day to prevent access by wildlife.

lkford Wild Cat Days is an exciting and fun-filled weekend for all ages to enjoy. Wild Cat Days is an opportunity for the whole community to showcase everything that Elkford has to offer, as well as offering fun and entertaining events to residents and visitors alike.

The weekend officially starts off with a real bang with fireworks on Friday evening and the events continue on from there. One of the cornerstones of Elkford Wild Cat Days is the Slo Pitch Tournament, which draws teams from all over the Kootenays and Southern Alberta, which runs all weekend long and is accompanied by adult refreshment gardens and an adult dance on Saturday evening.

The weekend is also packed with activities for families, such as pony rides, a preschool dance, a parade, PT the Clown, inflatables and much, much more. Other activities include a SMS Poker Tournament, geocaching, local bands and a pancake breakfast.

Wild Cat Days is a weekend that emphasizes the true community spirit of Elkford and I would like to personally thank all of the volunteers and organizations that work tirelessly every year to make this event such a huge success. You are greatly appreciated and I would like to say Thank You to everyone that helps out!

Barbecues & Outdoor Cooking attracts bears. Never leave any food unattended outdoors. Burn off your grill after each use. Cover the barbecue with a tarp.

Compost does not usually attract bears if it is well managed.

However, if there is a noticeable odour, it can become a problem.

Composts should be turned to mix with air. Worm composting is virtually odorless and a good alternative in bear season.

Bird Feeders attract bears especially when loaded with rich sunflower seeds and suet.

Pet Food left outside will attract bears. Pets should be fed indoors.

Fruit Trees often go un-harvested and attract bears. Some people feel that letting bears have unwanted fruit is acceptable, but encouraging bears to enter into residential areas is always a risk. The solution is to harvest your fruit early and or fence your orchards. Unwanted fruit trees should be removed.

A major attraction for these hungry bears are the garbage cans left in carports, and apple trees that have unpicked fruit on them or apples left on the ground.

2012 Property Tax Notices Property Tax Notices for the City of Fernie have been mailed to all property owners on record. Property taxes are payable by July 3, 2012, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current year taxes.

If you haven’t received your tax notice in the mail please contact City Hall at 250-423-6817 or cityhall@fernie.ca and request that a copy be forwarded to you. New property owners who have not received a notice are advised to contact City Hall. No exemption from taxation or penalty is conferred by reason of non-receipt of the Property Tax Notice.

Payment of your property taxes can be made by mail, in person at City Hall, or by phone or internet banking or in person through most financial institutions. Cheques post dated to July 3, 2012 will be accepted at City Hall. Please allow time for your payment to arrive at City Hall prior to the due date. Post marks on mailed remittances will not be considered as date of payment. Receipt of electronic payments will be recorded at the date and time the funds arrive in the City’s bank account and not when the payment is transmitted by your financial institution.

Regardless of the method of payment, eligible property owners must complete the Home Owner Grant application that is attached to the bottom of the Tax Notice and remit it to City Hall in order to claim the Grant. If you’ve misplaced the grant application that’s attached to the bottom of your tax notice, an online form is available at www.sbr.gov. bc.ca/documents_library/forms/0078FILL.pdf.

Completed Home Owner Grant applications can be faxed to 250-4233034 or scanned and emailed to cityhall@fernie.ca.

The self- guided tour of participating shops, galleries, and studios in all corners of town from Highway 3 to our historic downtown core highlights some of the best works in the Elk Valley.

The support shown for local and national artists is evident once you continue from stop to stop on this scenic, captivating expedition. Art has always had a dominant presence but, with the increasing number of establishments and studios featuring the works of so much talent, it has been decided an art walk is in order.

(Clawhammer Press) and Christa Moffat (ccmarketing) are no strangers to organizing community events. When the idea initially emerged, it wasn’t long before they managed to gather the troops and get a small scale art/ ski walk to test the waters. It couldn’t have been better timing as it coincided with the 50 years of skiing and riding in Fernie this past winter.

Now, it is time to bring out the big guns and go for the art walk they had envisioned and that is how ArtBeat was born.

Although ArtBeat will primarily be a self- direct excursion, free guided tours will take place on most Wednesdays and Sundays over the course of the runtime.

These tours will begin at The Arts Station and be led by knowledgeable individuals able

to provide additional insight and explanation of the exhibits, displays, and studios.

On Wednesdays, July 11 and August 8, as a special added bonus to the Wednesday Summer Socials Concert and Market Series, be sure to cap off your tour at the ArtBeat market from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Arts Station. Here you will have the opportunity to peruse and purchase works and wares of local artisans while enjoying live music and indulging at the beverage tent and delicious food vendors.

W

hether you call the Elk Valley your home or your home away from home, inspiration from the many facets of nature and wildlife is impossible to ignore.

For Karen Cook, she has been able to take this inspiration to the next level using her talent in artistry to create The Art Station’s latest gallery exhibit, Back of Beyond.

Those early years of absorbing and internalizing the raw beauty of her environment were the inspiration for the paintings she does today.

‘Back of Beyond’ is a compilation of pieces created by Cook in her specialty, oil painting, but also features some of her work in photography. Her use of earthy

tones and composition give a glance into the heart of this Natal native and allows the viewer to see just how much of an impact her environment and upbringing have played on her work.

Cook says, “Art begins in the imagination, long before an artist touches a canvas with a paintbrush.” Considering the nature of her pieces, it is safe to say Cook’s imagination has been largely affected by the many memories of the wilderness and landscape she has been immersed in since birth.

Join Karen Cook and guests at The Arts Station on Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. for her exhibition opening. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available on site so you are encouraged to come early and stay late.

The exhibit will continue until Tuesday, July 24.

What is a drug?

A drug alters bodily functions thereby affecting thinking, feeling or behaviour. Referring to drugs based on their impact on the Central Nervous System (CNS) clarifies possible confusion. When classifications of drugs are based on legal status, such as alcohol not being considered a drug, the legal status is subject to change. Additionally, when drugs are classified as “hard” or “soft” confusion lies in the interpretation. Therefore, classifying drugs based on the CNS affect provides clarity and consistency.

IDES boys placed first overall for the boys and the school took first place overall for the schools.

Kootenay Tae Kwon Do brings home gold Submitted

ootenay Tae Kwon Do has been hard at work preparing for the World Cup Championships being held in Brighton in England in early October.

Many exciting things have been happening, we were in Calgary in November to compete in the national championships and brought home an amazing 26 awards from that tournament.

The Nationals was a stepping stone for us and preparation for the Pan American Championships began.

We have been training long hard sessions in the Sparwood recreation center and

the school gym. The community has been very supportive to the students and has been wishing us the best of luck every time they see us train.

We went to the Pan American Championships on June 15 to 17 in Trios Rivieres, Quebec with five students and brought home three gold in sparring, four silver, three in pattern and one in sparring, and one bronze in pattern.

We were not left behind, we are right up there with the rest of the Tae Kwon Do community and now we are back home with a new energy and knowledge to start the hard preparation

for Brighton and the world cup.

Kootenay Tae Kwon Do is holding an umping seminar on Sunday to get our students very familiar with all of the rules we need to know for the World cup and the senior members an umping certificate to be able to judge in the rings during the championships in Brighton. It has been a very exciting time for our club over the past year and a major year of accomplishment for Mr. Saint Saran.

Our clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head instructor spent the month of April travelling to Nashville and Vancouver in preparation of his testing for his seventh

degree.

He was successful and now is among the rank of a Master and he is one degree from a Grand Master. This accomplishment takes a life time of commitment.

ouths ages nine to 14 experienced the thrill of racing at this year's Coal Miner Days Knights of Columbus Soapbox Derby.

This event which has been taking place for the past nine years during Coal Miner Days sees approximately 70 kids race a custom made Soapbox car down Red Cedar Drive in Sparwood.

"The kids have a lot of fun at the races. This also gives them a chance to participate in an event they feel is all their own. They are full of smiles and very friendly to each other, even in this type of competitive event," says Allan Barrass, Knights of Columbus Grand Knight and Soapbox Derby Organizer.

This event not only allows kids to participate, it gets parents, grandparents, friends and businesses involved with building the soapbox and sponsoring the drivers.

"This is such a great event on many levels, the kids that run the race are at the age where they may be too old to

Zipline brings more fun for adrenaline junkies

ernie Alpine Resort now has a new challenge for adrenaline junkies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the largest aerial adventure playground in the Rockies.

The new aerial

playground and Zipline tour opened last week and features 16 elements including Ziplines, Log Driver Walks, Nitro Swings, Shrinking Islands, Cargo Net and more fun, 60 feet off the ground in the trees.

Obituaries HARRINGTON: We share the loss of Michael Harrington on June 13, 2012.

Mike was born on September 7, 1953, in Fernie, where he met and married the love of his life, Patsy. They raised a family while adventuring from the Kootenays, Coast to Cariboo and finally Prince George with moves as Store Manager with Overwaitea Foods. He is survived by his daughter Jessica and her husband Brian, his son Mathew and his wife Jolene, who will work to carry on the values of their parents’ marriage. In the last 2 years, his love for grandsons Emerson and Harvey, continued to prove his warmth and depth of heart. Mike is also survived by 2 sisters; Maureen (Frank) Lento and Carol (Glenn) Uphill of Fernie and 4 brothers; Jim (June) of Osoyoos, Pat (Myrna) of Kimberley, Terry (Gena) of Cranbrook and Peter (Marion) of Calgary, as well as brothers-in-law Charlie (Mary) Mattersdorfer, Adam McNaughton and sister-inlaw Carol (Ken) Caldwell of Fernie. He also leaves to mourn several nieces and nephews. Mike shared his compassion and humour with his family, friends and co-workers. A Celebration of Life was held in the Atrium of the Prince George CN Centre on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

Roger was born on June 22, 1945 to parents Virginia and Ernie Scanlon in Eckville, Alberta. As a teen he attended South Peace Secondary School in Dawson Creek, BC and later graduated with a GED. He married Margaret Smith in Fairbanks, Alaska on September 21, 1977.

Roger was a very hard worker and worked as a heavy duty mechanic at Romar Mechanical Services.

Roger is pre-deceased by his parents Ernie and Virginia Scanlon, he is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughters Robin Scanlon and Becky Banack, his grandchildren Rachel and Max Banack, his brother Rolly Scanlon and his sisters Ruth Barker and Roxie Scanlon.

A special thank you to all of the ICU nurses in the Prince George Hospital, Dr. Thompson and all of the nurses at the Fort St. John Hospital.

Canada Day in Fernie

O

n June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st. The July 1st holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day. In 1982 the name was changed to Canada Day. In Fernie in the early years of the last century Dominion Day celebrations revolved around sporting events such as baseball, football (soccer) and footraces of various kinds. In 1903 there was a fat menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race (200lbs and over) as well as a blindfold wheelbarrow race.

First prize for the fat menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race was 100 cigars with a $2 bottle of perfume for second place. Another popular event was catching a greased pig â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the prize was the pig. Loggersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sports such as log rolling were held at the mills around Fernie.

On July 1st 1915 a first aid competition was held on the grounds of what is now city hall and in 1923 there was Dominion Day Q ueen Competition.

Photographer Fred Spalding donated 1 dozen photographs to the 3rd Lady in Waiting. Parades also seem to have been a feature of the day as well.

In 1927, which signaled the beginning of July 1st as we know it, Fernie along with the rest of Canada celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. Ottawa, the laying of the cornerstone by the Governor General of the Confederation Building and the inauguration of the Carillon in the Peace Tower were the highlights.

In addition Canada's telegraph and telephone companies and 23 radio stations forged a nation-wide link to broadcast speeches, songs, poems and the peals of the carillon bells live from Ottawa. Fernie marked the occasion with a parade.

Picnics were also a big part of the celebrations. In Coal Creek the Miners Picnic was held on July 1st: For the children the days before the event they witnessed the preparations as their mothers cooked and packed food for the big event. The train came to take them to the picnic site

â&#x20AC;&#x201C; usually where the golf course is now or out towards Morrissey. The day was filled with friendly competition, food and ice cream. At the end of the day the children were rounded up and loaded on to the train where seats were found and all were glad to be on their way home, treasuring fond memories and sharing them for days to come.

Community EcoGarden Treasure Hunt

P

rentice Park, which encompasses the school yards and soccer fields, is a familiar place to Fernie children.

On Canada Day, though, the kids have an opportunity to enjoy this open grassy space with their families and take in all the celebrations planned. The long day, with busy market, entertainment, crowds, and play areas can become overwhelming for little ones.

The Community EcoGarden comes to the rescue with a unique activity inside its deer fence. To slow the pace, enjoy the peaceful gardens and focus on an interesting task, consider taking your child on a garden treasure hunt!

The EcoGarden’s third annual Treasure Hunt is a fun activity for all ages, but preschoolers will need the help of a parent or older sibling.

This is how it works: Stop by the EcoGarden information table inside the big garden gate any time between 10am and 4pm on Canada Day. Pick up a list of treasure hunt items and a pencil, then start your search! Discovery is the goal, so your little hunters will find their natural treasure, but leave it where it is. Rather, write a few words on the list to describe it. Completed treasure lists will be collected and entered in a prize draw at the end of the afternoon.

ome join us for this fun filled family annual event! Bring your kids, bikes, pets and get ready once again as we celebrate Canada day with The Gearhub Bike rodeo. Dress up (your pets too!!) and tour your pets around the track to kick off the Canda day celebrations. Then join in for fun and prizes as we continue with bike races for kids of all ages and abilities.

There will also be a NEW "Run Bike" category this year for the littlest of riders too!

Canada Day Kids Tent

T

he Fernie Childcare Society will once again be teaming up with the City of Fernie department of recreation to provide a kids tent at the Canada Day festivities. Crafts, face painting, and infant play area will be available. As well, the Society will be selling drinks as a fundraiser for the non-profit, charitable daycare.

The Childcare Society is a volunteer board which

serves to meet the needs of children and their parents by providing licensed, affordable child care services in Fernie.

The society was formed in 2007 and the daycare opened it’s doors in September of 2009. Located at 1101 2nd Ave, you can “hear” the thriving business playing in the backyard. The centre is open 8 am to 5:30 pm five days a week. If you have toys in good condition that would benefit from a home at our infant/toddler centre for kids 0-2.5 or our early childhood centre for kids 2.5-5.9, please feel free to drop them by the centre during operating hours. The Society is very grateful for all the monetary and donations-in-kind that the daycare has received from generous members of the Elk Valley community and businesses in it’s first three years of operation. A $10,000 donation from Teck last year allowed the centre to make many improvements.

While both our daycare centres are presently full with waiting lists the board is looking into expansion. Music Line-Up

C

anada Day is right around the corner and this year’s celebration has an epic musical line-up that is sure to have all ages dancing through the day all the way to the evening fireworks display. Starting at noon the stage will have children’s entertainment with PT the Clown. Music performances will follow with local acts such as The Bickertons, Red Girl as well as Cranbrook’s Heather Gemmell and The Peaks. After a quick dinner break, the music will continue with Lethbridge duo Redrum Triumph, Golden BC’s Southern rock quartet Willhorse, and Fernie’s own power punk rock fun band The Runs. Just before the fireworks Fernie’s stoke folk band Shred Kelly will headline the show getting the crowd foot stomping into the night.

Shred Kelly has just returned from Toronto having finished recording the follow-up to their debut album “Goodbye July” and are excited to play some new songs to home town Fernie before heading out across Canada on summer tour playing festivals such as the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, and The Ottawa Blues Fest. The new album “In the Hills” is slated to be released on September long weekend and all band members are excited to be debuting some new songs that were inspired by mountain life and history in the Elk Valley.

Shred Kelly will take the stage on Canada Day having just come back from the Tracks on Tracks train trip from Vancouver to Toronto that CBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting. Ten bands have been selected to make the journey to NXNE Music Festival in Toronto by train that will be a ‘Festival Express’ style documentary filmed by Green Couch Productions.

In addition to live music and children’s entertainment, the days activities will also include the singing of O’ Canada, bike parade, bike rodeo, face painting, food venders, mountain market, and many more family attractions to celebrate the nations birthday.
