Hang glider killed in Spall crash Morning Star Staff
The pilot and lone occupant of a powered hang glider was killed after the craft crashed in a Spallumcheen field Thursday morning. RCMP report that at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, emergency crews were called to a field in the 5600 block of Back Enderby Road for a report of an ultralight plane crash. “Emergency crews arrived at the scene and determined that the aircraft is a powered hang glider, it is a non-registered aircraft,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “It was being operated by a pilot who was on a training flight at the time.” Indications are the pilot lost control of the craft and collided with the ground. The age and where the pilot is from are not being released at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the RCMP and the coroners department, which was called to the scene Thursday.

Enderby flooding forces residents out JENNIFER SMITH Morning Star Staff
Slumped creek banks and washed out roads and bridges forced families from their homes in rural Enderby. Rising water in the Ashton Creek area and debris closed down Enderby-Mabel Lake Road, approximately 14 kilometres from the Enderby bridge Wednesday. The road was re-opened for single lane, alternating traffic only Thursday afternoon. Remedial work continues in order to reestablish full traffic flow. It’s estimated more than 100 families were impacted by the flooding and debris, including residents of the Creekside Mobile Home Park, who were issued an evacuation alert Wednesday evening. “I know a lot of people were displaced and had to stay at the Howard Johnson or families’ places,” said Patty Marshall, who works at the Ashton Creek General Store.

Darilyn VanDresar keeps traffic off the washed out section of Enderby-Mabel Lake Road in Ashton Creek Thursday. The road was closed due to multiple flooded sections of the road. “It was impassable by cars but some fourby-fours got out (Thursday) morning. “It was blowing banks and taking sheds out,” said Marshall of Ashton Creek, which she

Creek bridge (at the top of the watershed) was washed out. “It’s a mess down there,” said Jackie Pearase, rural Enderby director, of the overall situation. Pearase says the problem was watering coming off the mountains. “It raises questions about ditching. The ditches aren’t able to hold the water,” she said. The closure of Enderby-Mabel Lake Road meant many residents east of Ashton Creek could not access jobs or schools in Enderby. The closure also could have proved challenging if a medical emergency arose. “I know of one woman who is pregnant. It was a real concern,” said Pearase. Pearase was at a Regional District of North Okanagan board meeting in Coldstream Wednesday and was turned away when she tried to get to her Kingfisher home.
