Lumberjacks, maple syrup, beaver tails and mounted police. Most of us are aware of the stereotypes associated with being Canadian.

But how do new citizens perceive their Canadian identities?

In an afternoon of round table talks with existing Canadians and community leaders April 26 at Pearkes recreation centre, 50 new citizens discussed active citizenship and shared their experiences.

The talks were aimed at discovering how to connect new citizens in the community and create an opportunity for newcomers to New citizens (2011) learn from established ■ Canada: 181,251 Canadians.

■ Greater Victoria: 824 Dimitri de Morea, a clinical counsellor from France who attended with his wife, felt it necessary to become a “full-fledged member of society,” after moving to Canada, he said. “(Being Canadian) means respecting the law, traditions and values of Canada and representing them as well as I can and contributing to further ameliorate or enhance our society,” de Morea said.

Veronica Osborn, co-organizer with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship’s Victoria Committee, calls the discussions a tremendous experience for both new and existing Canadians.

“I’m an immigrant and I remember what it was like as a newcomer to Canada,” Osborn said. “We always learn so much from sitting down with people who have decided to make Canada their home.

It’s very inspiring.”

Colwood crawl caught on camera

Commuters who often get stuck in the Colwood Crawl along the Trans-Canada Highway can soon check out how bad the route is backed up before they even get behind the wheel.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will install a webcam at the notoriously congested intersection of McKenzie Avenue/Admirals Road and Highway 1.

The webcam will go live at drivebc.ca later this year.

The University of Victoria has significantly scaled back plans to build a parkade on McKenzie Avenue.

The new proposal for the parkade – to be built as part of the new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) – calls for it to be just ten-metres tall, with four levels of parking above ground and one level underground.

This comes after Saanich council and the community repeatedly told UVic over the last year that previous plans for a seven-level, 19.5-metre tall parkade were too big.

The current plan, presented at four open houses on the weekend and earlier this week, has a total of 332 parking stalls. Only 98 of them are new, however, as CARSA will be built on top of an existing 234-stall parking lot.

Kristi Simpson, associate vice-president of campus planning, acknowledges that the new parkade would only solve a fraction of the parking needs on campus.

“We did a transportation and parking report back in 2008 that told us between the years 2013 and 2018, even with a good (transportation demand management) program, we need to build up to 800 new stalls,” she said. “This gets us 100, and as we more forward we’ll have to think about how we accommodate that other 700.”

Saanich bylaws require that the university install one parking stall for every 50 square metres of new university buildings. In the last decade, UVic has successfully lobbied Saanich council to support parking variances to install fewer parking stalls than required. The university is currently 1,000 spaces shy of what’s required by Saanich bylaws. If the new parkade is built, UVic will need Saanich to approve an additional parking variance for 256 spaces that the municipality would otherwise require.

At the open houses, the new design was presented along with three different esthetic options: concrete and vines, metal and glass panels, or aluminum fins. Costs range from $13.4 million to $15.5 million.

After reviewing feedback from the houses, UVic will finalize a design to submit to the Saanich planning department.

UVic told to address source of health problems Kyle Slavin News staff

M

ary-Louise Leidl approached the University of Victoria’s Sedgewick Building in late 2003 feeling a healthy balance of anxiety and optimism.

It was only natural for her to feel this way, with a sought-after job interview imminent.

She stepped out of the December cold into the 1969-built building, but from the first rush of warm air that greeted her, Leidl could tell something was amiss.

“I noticed right away a musty smell. I remember standing there thinking: ‘Should I even continue with this? Should I go to the interview?’” she recalls. “I should’ve paid attention to that, in retrospect.”

The co-op student successfully got a job in the UVic communications department (UCom). She wrote press releases and articles for The Ring, the university’s newspaper.

But Leidl quickly gained more than just on-the-job work experience. Before the first work week was up, she developed health concerns, which she says were “completely out of my realm of experience.”

“I was feeling totally exhausted. I remember on the (first) Friday evening sleeping for 12 hours – I had never done that in my life,” Leidl says.

And the problems persisted as the job continued. “I was feeling unwell, feeling really run down – and unusually so.”

She brought her health concerns to the attention of her work and co-op supervisors, as well as her doctor. She asked her colleagues whether they had ever “experienced anything unusual working there” and got mixed answers. She even wrote to university president David Turpin expressing her concerns after her work experience ended.

“I have little in the way of concrete evidence that would show Sedgewick is in fact sick,” Leidl wrote to Turpin in July 2004.

“What I do know for a fact is that building has made me ill.”

Leidl was not alone. Since 2000 many UVic employees (the school won’t say exactly how many) have filed complaints about health concerns developed while working in Sedgewick. According to WorkSafeBC, UCom is where most of the serious health concerns originate.

A critical report from WorkSafeBC, released April 17, says the university has failed to protect the health and safety of its employees under the Workers Compensation Act (WCA) after high levels of mould and carbon dioxide were found in the Sedgewick building in late 2009.

“The employer has been receiving these complaints for a number of years, and, to date, has failed to fully investigate the known and unknown airborne contaminates,” wrote WorkSafeBC prevention officer Dawn Ianson.

CO2 levels inside were elevated – possibly due to the fact the building’s HVAC system, which pumps stale air out and fresh air in, was permanently shut down in 1998.

As well, mould spore counts were 31 times higher inside Sedgewick than outside.

These findings came in December 2009, when the university took air quality tests and fungi samples in Sedgewick for the first time. The 2009 tests were not prompted

by WorkSafeBC, but rather many years of complaints.

Murray shares a personal sick building experience with his students from the early 1990s when he and his wife moved into a 1930s James Bay house that had recently been renovated. Within weeks his wife became ill. Sick building symptoms can include eye, nose, throat and skin irritation, as well as nonspecific hypersensitivity to odours and tastes. It wasn’t until his wife got better while on vacation that the couple figured out it was the house. “It was sealed up super tight but the crawl space hadn’t been sealed and dampness was coming up causing mould,” he recalls.

They quickly moved out. “And when we bought our first home the first thing I did was seal the basement.” Building regulations require energy saving new homes to have heat return systems installed.

Murray suggests homeowner discuss with their architects and general contractors the many new kinds of organic products that can be used during renovations in order to maintain good air quality in a home.

– WorkSafeBC prevention officer Dawn Ianson ment, says the delay in testing the building came because it took nine years to identify similarities in the types of complaints the university was receiving.

“Our perception of it, at the time, was these were individual complaints. We certainly see, right at this point in time, there are a number of individuals that WorkSafeBC has identified who have common complaints,” he says. “Certainly by 2009, it was clear something needed to be done to address the complaints that we were hear-

ing in Sedgewick.”

Some of the concerns about smell were dealt with – one was food rotting in the kitchen, another was a spill inside a vending machine – but Piskor acknowledges that complaints continued about persistent “earthy-type odours.”

A current UVic employee, who spoke to the News on the condition of anonymity, says the building smells like “a stale, moist, dirty basement.”

“I’ve never not noticed the smell. It’s

always been there,” says the employee, who doesn’t work in Sedgewick.

She, too, would notice strange symptoms after spending time in the building.

“An hour or so after I would leave the building I would have a bit of a raw feeling in my throat, and sometimes just an irritation of a cough.”

Debilitating fatigue and headaches were the most common health effects reported by employees in Sedgewick, followed by chronic coughing, runny noses, bronchitis, asthma and itchy eyes, Ianson wrote in the WorkSafeBC report.

UVic took steps in the last three years to attempt to mitigate the problems. The crawl space beneath the building was ground-sealed in 2010, and the HVAC system was cleaned and turned back on earlier this year. (The HVAC was initially turned off because “it was blowing cold air,” Piskor says.)

Brian Kapuscinski, project architect with KMP Architecture Inc., which conducted the crawlspace remediation, says there was no mould or standing water found underneath the building.

“We simply cleaned up the space, tied up some data wiring that was not secure … then lined the entire crawlspace with a PVC membrane,” he says. There were a couple spots that were damp, though, Kapuscinski says.

Ianson states that, while the university has taken steps to mitigate the problems since 2009, “the area remains without adequate housekeeping and, in discussions with workers, … there remains chronic health/wellness concerns.”

WorkSafeBC only became aware of the issue in June 2011, when an employee fell ill and filed a claim, says spokesperson Donna Freeman.

Ianson issued four orders that the university must comply with by May 31.

The orders require UVic to ensure its workers’ safety by correcting the issues related to health and wellness complaints from Sedgewick employees.

The university must conduct airborne sampling and produce a report with findings when complaints are lodged.

It also must improve the reporting system for health and safety issues to ensure each one is investigated and addressed.

Finally, UVic needs to tell WorkSafeBC what steps were taken to correct the WCA contraventions.

“We’ve done our utmost to address the situation as it’s come up,” Piskor says.

“There are certainly things we can improve, and we are certainly moving forward to improve our processes.

“We have a compliance plan that we will be putting together over the next few weeks.

And we will be engaging a consultant to go through and do this work,” he adds.

One of the employee unions at the university, CUPE 951, sent out a release to its members last week asking anyone who has experienced health concerns in Sedgewick since 1998 to report it to them.

Leidl, who no longer works at the university, is hopeful that WorkSafeBC will ensure the health of employees still working in Sedgewick. “If there’s a problem, you fix it.

Why it was being swept under the carpet, I don’t know – it’s a bit of a mystery to me,” she says. “It’s been going on way too long.

Personally I would like to see the building torn down. I don’t know if they can do anything other than that or find another place for staff to work.” kslavin@saanichnews.com

After enduring an often lengthy journey fraught with paperwork prior to the ceremony, new citizens often feel a sense of relief after the event, Osborn added.

De Morea donned a furry black bear hat, bow tie and Canadian flags as a means of “putting a little spirit” into what he considered a very happy event, though he admitted the move from France did come at a cost.

“The most difficult thing as an immigrant is the fact you don’t know anyone when you arrive,” he said.

“You lose all of your family and social relations and your culture from where you were from. That was the hardest for me: rebuilding the social and cultural connections.”

De Morea’s wife, Rebecca Pearson, was born in the United States but now has dual citizenship and also took part in the Thursday ceremony.

The eighth incarnation of the event, hosted by the nonprofit group, Institute for Canadian Citizenship, culminated in a swearing-in ceremony overseen by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

The ICC was founded and is co-chaired by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul. The committee’s mandate is to ensure the annual 160,000 new Canadians are welcomed every year and included as equals. That goal is realized through three core programs, including the Cultural Access Pass. It allows new citizens a chance to visit cultural attractions for free for a year after swearing in ceremonies.

B.C. pushes possible year-round school calendar Change likely to take at least two years before hitting Victoria: board chair School districts will be able to determine their own calendar and offer online classes to students in any grade under amendments to the School Act presented Thursday.

Education Minister George Abbott said the changes are designed to increase flexibility for schools and students. The ministry will continue to require a minimum number of instruc-

tional hours, but school boards will be able to design their own calendars.

The standard school calendar is a relic of an agrarian society where children did farm work in summer, Abbott said. A two-month summer break can result in setbacks for student learning, especially those who are struggling to keep up, he said.

The topic of year-round learning has come up during election campaigns, but has yet to make it to the board of education table for debate.

“It’s a huge change to consider,” said Greater Victoria Board of Education chair Peg Orcherton. “(Allowing year-round schooling) might

affect families that have children in more than one district and it might have some educational merit.”

While calendar changes are worthy of discussion, Orcherton said, she doesn’t see the change happening any time soon.

“It might be a couple of years at least before any changes could even be contemplated.”

School districts will have to hold consultations with the public and staff before changing the school calendar, and the ministry has to approve changes before they can take effect.

The closure of an intelligence unit at CFB Esquimalt within the next two years won’t jeopardize the West Coast navy’s ability to gather data, says an Oak Baybased intelligence expert.

The Department of National Defence said it has already begun the process of merging its Acoustic Data Analysis Centre (Pacific) within a similar, but larger unit at CFB Halifax, a move that will create a onetime savings of $378,000.

Defence officials say the consolidation will save money, but won’t impact the military’s ability “to meet operational objectives in the delivery of naval intelligence capability.”

The 27 military personnel who work at ADAC Pacific are responsible for providing acoustic analysis, operational support and training “to enhance the overall combat effectiveness of maritime surface, subsurface and air fleets,” the department said in a statement to the News.

Though the military remains tightlipped about the exact nature of the work done at the unit, Alan Breakspear said personnel likely process and analyze sonar information, some of which is recorded at sea.

Shoe-prints on car window lead to drunk teen’s arrest

An 18-year-old Lake Cowichan man faces mischief charges after his shoe-prints were found on a crime scene.

Saanich police were called to SilverCity Victoria at Tillicum Centre late Saturday night by a 17-year-old who came out of a movie and found his Honda Civic extensively damaged.

A large piece of cinderblock was used to smash the rear windshield and the side mirrors were bent and broken. There were also running shoe imprints on one of the windows as if someone had unsuccessfully tried to kick in the glass.

The navy’s ability to analyze this collected data won’t be impacted by the West Coast unit’s closure, because the information will instead be sent to ADAC Atlantic for analysis, said Breakspear.

For decades, he worked in intelligence analysis and policy development for such federal agencies as Communications Security Establishment Canada and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, among others.

“The aim of the military, and the government, generally, is to have as complete a picture of what’s coming towards Canadian territory as you possibly can,” he said. “The more holes you have in your collection system, the more likely it is that something dangerous will slip through.

“I see no indication here that they’re closing down a collection capability.”

In fact, the move will be advantageous, he said.

“What you’re getting is a stronger capability to do analysis, because you’ve got more people there (on the East Coast) with more experience.”

ADAC Atlantic opened in 1967. ADAC Pacific was established the following year as a detachment and became a unit 1994.

Technological advancements make their merger possible.

Workplace health a serious issue To some, “sick building syndrome” sounds like an invented phrase designed to create a new industry.

But to those who have experienced health problems at work, the broad label – it was first coined in the 1970s – was music to their ears. It was a recognition that such annoying symptoms as sore throats or eyes, dry cough and even fatigue, that seemed to UVic has a disappear upon leaving a building, may indeed chance to be have been a result of a leader again external forces rather than being related to their personal health care in general.

A recent WorkSafeBC report called out the University of Victoria for not adequately protecting the health and safety of its employees in the Sedgewick building, home to UVic’s communications department. Mould spores and high carbon dioxide levels were determined to be contributing to symptoms experienced by employees working there.

UVic had been looking into the problems as far back as 2009, following numerous complaints from staff. Still, WorkSafe, which received a employee complaint about Sedgewick in 2011, found not enough was done to remedy air quality problems in the building.

In these days of economic uncertainty, people are fearful of losing their jobs if they complain and are often reluctant to speak up when working conditions are less than ideal.

It takes great courage for an employee to stand up for their right to a healthy work environment, especially when the source of illness or discomfort is not immediately apparent. It also takes courage for management to do the right thing, even if that means spending money on something not in the budget.

As with the identity theft case that prompted the university to tighten up its security, UVic, one of Canada’s top employers, has an opportunity to show leadership again by getting to the bottom of the Sedgewick problems. By adhering to WorkSafeBC’s orders and instituting an environmental health policy for all its buildings, it can ensure employees’ concerns are taken seriously.

Forest cover is increasing in industrialized countries, which use farmland more efficiently.

The B.C. Liberal government needs to make some tough decisions quickly, before next year’s election.

The premier’s vow to “create and defend” jobs is about to be tested like never before.

‘Attacks,’ ‘bullying’ not necessary strike rhetoric During this whole teacher dispute we’ve certainly heard a lot from Susan Lambert.

I’ve heard such phrases as “assault on teachers’ rights”, “attacking the union”, “the government is bullying us” and my favourite: “teachers aren’t respected or appreciated.”

If Ms. Lambert wants to talk about assaults, why doesn’t she go talk to the sex trade worker or nurse who’s been assaulted on the job?

If she wants to talk about attacks, why doesn’t she talk to some of our brave Afghanistan veterans who have witnessed roadside bombs and gunfire (Could you imagine the military going on strike?)?

If she wants to talk about bullying, why doesn’t she go talk to the kid that’s bullied because he or she is different for being skinny, or fat, or nerdy, or gay?

It does nothing but trivialize those that experience it daily.

If you have a computer shop and a teacher brings their computer in for repair, tell them you’re on strike.

If you have an auto repair shop and a teacher brings their car in for repairs, tell them that you’re on strike.

If everybody does that, maybe Ms. Lambert will come to the realization that everybody in society is valuable and that respect is earned and appreciation given for something of value.

I’ve met many teachers, mostly elementary, at bazaars, cake walks, track meets and spring barbecues and all of them were great.

Teachers need to know that I and every other parent I’ve spoken to respect and appreciate everything they do, despite what anyone says.

I’m tired of the stale rhetoric that has become the norm in public sector disputes. I’m tired of hearing it every day on TV and radio.

Get away from the TV cameras and into a negotiating room and get this settled before September – for the kids.

Canadians must speak up for B.C. Coast Stephen Harper has told China that the Enbridge pipeline is a done deal and that having huge oil tankers negotiating the narrow waters of B.C.’s coast is safe.

I wonder if Canadians realize that part of the tanker route passes through one of the most dangerous waters in the world, due to weather. Factor in our increasingly violent storms, fog and the possibility of human error, B.C.’s coast is in a very precarious and dangerous situation. It isn’t a matter of ‘if’ a tanker accident/oil spill will happen on B.C.’s pristine coast, it’s a matter of ‘when.’

Many of us live in B.C. because it is one of the most beautiful and diverse nature settings in the world. Yet Stephen Harper wants to build a pipeline right through one of the most fragile, delicate and vulnerable settings: the Great Bear Rainforest.

Unless Canadians, particularly the people of B.C., take some action, then the Enbridge pipeline will probably be a done deal. Premier Christy Clark has

the power to tell the Harper government that the people of B.C. don’t want it built. But we need to let her know our position.

If we sit back and don’t do anything, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Recreational fishing means more than fun It is with sadness that I see news that the Juan de Fuca Invitational Salmon Championship near Victoria has been cancelled for 2012.

The fact that this important social and cultural event for the B.C. recreational fishery that, over its 25-year history has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for much-needed salmon habitat and stock enhancement work has been cancelled should be enough of a tragedy, but it isn’t the whole story.

This major blow to the B.C. angling community and the tourism-based businesses that support it is a symptom of a far larger problem. It appears that over the past couple of decades the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has forgotten how important recreational fishing is to British Columbians and increasingly seems to have lost touch with the value of our fishery and how it works.

To illustrate the depth of this problem, you only have to look as far as DFO’s own planning and priority document for 2012.

It shows that the target landed value for commercial fisheries nationwide is $5 billion, while the target for the value of the recreational fishery is $7.5 billion.

The seriousness of the problem

becomes even more evident when we find out that DFO intends on spending $101.6 million to support commercial fisheries activity, while the recreational fishery is allocated $5.9 million.

Talk about no respect. How on Earth can this be justified?

The issues that flow out of this clear disregard for the recreational fishery affect many species across the entire province. Coho, Chinook, halibut, prawn, and crab are all glaring examples of fisheries where the recreational sector is becoming increasingly marginalized.

The public outcry surrounding halibut is well-documented, and yet even after making a tiny readjustment to the allocation, the minister has still tried to placate the commercial lobby by allowing individuals to lease quotas from commercial quota holders and thereby remove all bag limits or seasons for themselves. The DFO encourages this blatant defiling of the basic rules and ethics of sport fishing which is disgusting.

Certain Chinook and Coho stocks in the mid-Fraser River have been declining for more than a decade and DFO has been aware of this. What have they done to address or even gain an understanding of the problem?

Nothing, other than attempts to “shave the iceberg” by chipping away at an insignificant recreational catch. They know that further reductions in sport catch will do nothing to help these stocks, yet once again they will take what they feel is the path of least resistance rather than deal with the thornier issues.

This isn’t good enough, and until DFO is forced to address the fundamental issues of salmon production and in-river mortality

rather than recreational catch, there will be no light at the end of this tunnel any time soon.

It is time to stop allowing DFO to take the easy road. Personally I’m fed up with DFO managers who are only interested in creating confrontation between sectors and short-sighted band-aid solutions to long-term problems.

If the 300,000 or so anglers who value the precious time we spend on the water with family and friends, and the hundreds of businesses that are keeping coastal communities afloat across this province with their economic activity aren’t important to DFO, perhaps it’s time we remind them that we are here, we are important and we aren’t going anywhere.

Write the minister, talk to your local politicians, or just do something to make them understand that we are important, we do care and we have had enough.

The Capital Regional District board has introduced incentives for the commercial sector to separate its kitchen scraps from the waste stream.

Starting in 2013, waste haulers will be given a $20/tonne incentive to deliver kitchen scraps to CRD-approved transfer stations and compost-

ing facilities. The program is expected to help ease the transition to a full ban on kitchen scraps at Hartland Landfill, planned for 2015.

Organic materials such as food scraps and soiled paper products make up about 30 per cent of the waste stream at Hartland Landfill.

Fixing broken hearts Natalie North News staff

A Beyoncé remix blares through the speakers inside the Cordova Bay elementary gym as little bodies shake and shimmy wildly across the floor. But this isn’t dancing. This is jump rope.

Whether they barely skip over one rope rotation or they channel the spirit of a boxer in training, these kids are committed.

On April 26, all 266 students at the school participated in Jump Rope for Heart, an all-day jump rope fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Among the kids burning off energy for a good cause was Haleigh Miklic, a seven-year-old student for whom the event holds special meaning. As an infant, Miklic was diagnosed with a significant sized ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis – or,

as she explains it, a “broken heart.”

After open heart surgery, Miklic was given a clean bill of health. Sadly, her family was soon hit hard again by cardiovascular tragedy when her father suffered a heart attack and died at age 38.

Miklic surpassed her goal of raising $2,000 in pledges toward fixing broken hearts and has already set her sights on bringing in $3,000 in 2013.

“It’s important to other people’s families and it feels good,” said Miklic, who finds the double-dutch element of the event particularly enjoyable.

In 2011, Haleigh was the school’s top fundraiser, bringing in $1,270 of the total $11,715 raised at the school.

Cordova Bay elementary has been involved with Jump Rope for Heart for 22 years of the event’s 30-year history and has raised more than $120,000 to date. “(The students) get an inner desire to help and get so committed,” said Jean Prevost, librarian and event coordinator. “They definitely can make a difference together. Theater Skam spins with Victoria cycling festival Theater Skam is joining the Victoria International Cycling Festival.

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;theater on a bikeâ&#x20AC;? company will perform its annual summer project known as Bike Ride, June 16, 17, 23 and 24 beginning at Cecilia Ravine Park.

Skam is one of three arts and entertainment events on the cycling festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calendar this year, with Pedalling Art and Spoke â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Word. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to get into the festival even before (it debuted) last year,â&#x20AC;? said Theatre Skamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic producer Matthew Payne.

Both the performers and audience cycle along as Bike Ride presents a series of short shows along a four-kilometre stretch of the Galloping Goose Trail.

Through HAFI, homeowners and landlords with eligible tenants can apply for ďŹ nancial assistance of up to $20,000 for improvements that make their home more accessible and safe.

The goal of the program is to enable people who have physical limitations to live at home longer.

Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s physical needs change over time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sometimes, a small improvement to a home can make the difference between being able to live independently or not.

Victoria police have taken back the corner of Douglas and View streets from a crowd of young people who officers say could be seen openly selling and smoking marijuana.

During a recent six-week crackdown, patrol, Focused Enforcement Team and undercover Strike Force Unit officers targeted the 1100- and 1200blocks of Douglas St., which had become rife with drugs, aggressive panhandling and late-night alcohol-fuelled violence.

Eleven people are facing drug-related charges after they allegedly sold marijuana to undercover officers during the operation. Panhandlers who frequent the strip were also noticeably absent last Thursday, as uniformed officers spoke to media at the notorious corner.

“We felt we needed to be more assertive and create a bigger presence,” said Insp. Clark Russell, head of the police department’s Community and Operation Support Unit.

“We were seeing an increase (in problems) over the same time frame last year, but it’s not just that,” he said, noting the recent boost in police presence was also in response to intelligence gathered by officers and calls from the public.

“We don’t need stats to decide that some areas need a little more attention than others,” Russell said.

Ken Kelly, general manager of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, which represents 1,300 businesses and 710 property owners, voiced his concerns about the troublesome area to police late last year.

“I can’t adequately express our appreciation for the police who respond in the manner that they have,” he said.

One B.C. Transit driver recently asked to return

to his Douglas Street bus route now that the area has been cleaned up, signalling that police have made progress.

“He had asked to not drive this route because of all the problems that he had been having with the youth and the transient people that are coming on and off the bus – the ones who aren’t very respectful (and) causing fights,” said Focused Enforcement Team member Const. Chris Gilbert.

With summer around the corner and tourist season about to begin, it was important to nip the problem street corner in the bud, he said.

“It’s like vagabond centre and it only gets worse in the summer. So if we don’t get a handle on it now, then we set a precedent for the summertime.” emccracken@vicnews.com

■ April 24, 2012: A missing 13-year-old View Royal girl is found by police in the 1200-block of Douglas St. associating with a 22-year-old Quebec man.

■ Nov. 26, 2011: Tyler Noble, 20, of Shawnigan Lake, dies from injuries he suffered after he was allegedly assaulted at the corner of Douglas and View streets. Brandon Huth, 24, of Victoria, was charged with manslaughter. His case is now moving through the courts.

A reversion to the old days of lacrosse has the defence shooting and offence defending as the Victoria Shamrocks are going old school for the 2012 B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season (ages 18 to 21).

The Shamrocks jumped into first place with a perfect opening weekend, and downed the Delta Islanders 10-4 and Poco Saints 10-7.

Nine different players scored for the Shamrocks in the home-opener on Saturday against the Islanders.

The variety of scorers is due to a

retooling of the bench, said Shamrocks head coach Larry Smeltzer.

“The system is a work in progress. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance with it, but have a long way to go before it’s perfected. It contributed to our first two wins, but so did a deep desire from our players to win.”

Basically, Smeltzer is moving away from the specialization of offence and defence, with all players taking on a transition role, and playing at both ends of the rink.

“Box lacrosse seems to have deteriorated into some form of the field game (forced) into the arena.

Box players used to play offence and defence. Field isn’t a bad sport, but it belongs on the field, and not inside an arena.”

Smeltzer’s strategy is a response to the slower-moving but highly effective attack of the Coquitlam Adanacs and New Westminster Salmonbellies.

One of the changes is an increased ball-handling role by the goalies.

Cody Hagedorn made 43 saves on 47 shots on Saturday and on Sunday rookie goaltender Mike Berti made his debut, stopping 40 of 47 shots. Berti was added to the tandem in favour of last year’s goalie Cory Mayzes, who was cut, Smeltzer said.

“Hagedorn and Berti move the ball. That’s part of our system, they’re handling the ball much more and are the release person.”

It has led to breakaways and a faster counter-attack, he said.

The weekend was a different story for the Intermediate-A (16-18) Victoria Shamrocks, which lost 14-11 to the Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday but won 10-4 over the expansion Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday.

Jordan Cunningham led the Shamrocks with four goals and a helper on Saturday, while Darrin Wilson had a pair of goals and team captain Max Fredrickson picked up a goal and three assists. Cunningham netted a hat trick on Sunday.

With a heavy heart, Claremont secondary teacher Darren Reisig spoke about the April 25 cancellation of B.C.’s high school senior golf A, AA and AAA provincials.

The tournaments had been scheduled for May 29 to June 1 in Surrey, Radium and Kamloops, respectively.

The cancellations are part of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation protest against Bill 22.

Mountain biking was the first casualty, announced on April 24, while boys rugby, badminton, tennis and girls soccer were voted to continue on. As of Monday, the fate of track and field was still being decided.

Reisig is hoping the upcoming

Victoria Police Tournament for Lower Island high school golfers won’t be cancelled. As many as 72 golfers are expected for the shotgun tourney, today (May 2) at Olympic View Golf Club on the West Shore.

“I hope people honour their commitment to the police tournament just because so much work has gone into it already,” Reisig said.

As of last week, Reisig was in the process of trying to find out if there is enough of a reason to hold the Lower Islands, including the AAA. An Olympic future seems certain for upand-coming Victoria rower Patricia Obee, though she might have to wait a little longer.

Last week, 20-yearold Obee lost in a headto-head race against 37-year-old Tracy Cameron at Elk Lake. Cameron earned the secondspot in Canada’s lightweight double for the London Games, with Victoria’s Lindsay Jennerich (29) already selected for the boat.

Cameron and Jennerich won gold at the 2010 world rowing championships but Cameron was injured for last year’s worlds. That’s when Obee paired with Jennerich and won silver, helping to qualify the boat for London.

Eagles pass Mariners in standings A complete game shutout by pitcher Brendan Miller on Sunday afternoon (April 29) improved the Victoria Eagles to 8-4 on the season.

The Eagles swept both games against the Coquitlam Reds in the B.C. Premier Baseball League doubleheader on Sunday (April 29), 4-0 and 7-6.

Brett Hull earned the win in the first game despite allowing four runs in four innings. Kurt Horne threw three innings in relief for the save, and batted in an RBI from the cleanup position, helping his own cause.

Miller surrendered one walk and

six hits in seven innings of the second game. Catcher Sam Stevenson and second baseman Mitch Hawkins each clubbed two RBI. Meanwhile at Henderson Park on Saturday the Langley Blaze held the Victoria Mariners scoreless, sweeping the doubleheader 7-0 and 3-0.

Mariners starter Nathan McKinlay was tabbed with his first loss of the season.

Battle of the Atlantic remembered on the pond

Literacy expert to speak at autism fair The Victoria Autism Resource Fair happens this Saturday (May 5), from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the University of Victoria’s Student Union Building.

Argument leads to attack with slab of wood A 23-year-old Saanich man faces a charge of assault causing bodily harm after Victoria police say he entered a home and struck a 21-year-old Central Saanich man in the head with a piece of wood early Saturday.

“The assailant and the victim were known to each other, and had been in some form of argument earlier in the evening,” Victoria police spokesperson Mike Tucker said of the attack which happened in the 600-block of Linden Ave. in Fairfield.

The suspect fled the scene, but was later arrested with the help of Saanich police at a home in the 5200-block of Harold Green.

Those who died during the longest continuous battle during the Second World War will soon be commemorated by the Victoria Model Shipbuilding Society.

The society’s fourth annual

tribute to the Battle of the Atlantic happens May 6 at 10:45 a.m., at Harrison Pond, off Dallas Road.

There will be a minute of silence and a speech in honour of the sailors of the Royal

Canadian Navy and Canada’s Merchant Navy who lost their lives during the battle.

Models of warships will be on parade in the pond, in recognition of the Canadian ships that were sunk by

German U-boats and bomber aircraft, as allied and German forces fought for control of the Atlantic Ocean.
