QDTA ceasing all extra-curricular activities AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After last Thursday’s vote to oppose Bill 22, teachers across the province are ceasing all extra-curricular activities. “The decision was not an easy one,� Quesnel District Teachers’ Association president Teri Mooring said, adding the association is planning a public information forum.

A total of 21,625 teachers voted in favour of the AGM’s resistance strategy to oppose Bill 22, while 7,846 voted no.

Mooring said next steps include embarking on a resistance strategy to oppose the bill, including teachers withdrawing from any extra-curricular activities. “It is with heavy-hearts that teachers have made this choice,� Mooring said.

Peacock and Champagne receive two-year sentence AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Kelly Champagne and James Darren Peacock pleaded guilty to possession and have been sentenced to two years in prison, minus time served.

Champagne and Peacock were arrested April 12, 2011, along with David George Massey, in downtown Quesnel.

Two kilograms of cocaine and a very large sum of cash were seized at the scene.

Immediately following the arrests, RCMP drug enforcement officers obtained

warrants on a home and four businesses in Quesnel.

Several rifles, two handguns, a large cache of ammunition, body armour, two tasers and another large sum of cash were seized.

Two of the rifles are stolen and one of them was loaded with prohibited magazines that RCMP believed presented a serious risk to the public.

Stolen property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars was also seized including a one ton flat-deck truck, excavator, tractor and other machinery.

Massey is facing charges

including possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, multiple firearmsrelated offences and multiple counts of possession of stolen property. He is slated for his next court appearance May 7 in Prince George. All three men are currently in Prince George Regional Correction Facility. After time served, Peacock and Champagne have approximately 11 months left to serve.

Tonya Shepherd, Massey’s common law wife was also arrested but has since been granted stay of proceedings.

Hullabaloo Festival serves up children’s arts and music The Quesnel and District Community Arts Council was very pleased to receive a grant of $5,215.00 from the BC Arts Council and the provincial government to sponsor and organize the first Hullabaloo: Children’s Art and Music Festival held March 20 – 21 at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre. The Arts Council partnered with Quesnel Children’s Concert and Leisure Services for this event. On Friday more than 200 elementary children were involved and one little girl commented,” This was the best day of my life.” On Saturday, children and parents from the community were engaged in the event. The workshops included: improv singing with a loop pedal, recycled crafts, improv theatre, dream catchers, origami and dance. It was amazing to see how involved the children were in creating their art, dance and theatre. Go Go Bonkers, a group from Vancouver entertained the children and parents. Their theme was the environment and their enthusiasm and energy had the children very engaged and the children spontaneously would begin dancing.

The Arts Council wishes to thank the volunteers, Katimavik, the Cariboo Observer and Ad Boom Studio for all their help.

Land stability contract awarded

Council approved a $745,700 contract to the Jensen Drilling Company to cover the costs of drilling at nine horizontal drain sites as part of the West Quesnel Land Stability dewatering program.

Jensen Drilling was the firm that drilled the horizontal drains that were part of the 2008 WQLS trail dewatering program.

The total cost of installing the horizontal drains was estimated at $1.489 million, which includes $284,000 for engineering and inspection and $80,000 for plumbing.

At this stage, this portion of the WQLS dewatering program is under budget.

All three major contracts relating to the 2012 dewatering program (horizontal drains, vertical wells, and the Stork/Hawk storm drain) have been approved.

RCMP contract Council approved the Municipal Police Unit Agreement with the RCMP for a 20year period beginning in 2012.

The contract between the Province of British Columbia and the City of Quesnel maintains the same cost-sharing formula; cities with populations between

5,000 and 15,000 people pay 70 per cent of the costs.

The city’s RCMP budget for 2012 was based upon regular RCMP forecasts and a full compliment of 21 officers.

Those forecasts included provisions for pay increases.

Even with the Treasury Board’s March decision to approve pay increases for RCMP members, the existing city budget is sufficient.

Municipalities not ratifying the agreement would be required to start their own police force.

New fire chief City Council recognized Mike Russell as the successful candidate for the Deputy Chief position with the Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department.

Russell has been a department employee since October 1999.

His primary role has been that of the Fire Prevention Officer, although in 2001 he added the city’s safety officer duties.

Russell has completed his Fire Officer Level 4 qualification, holds a diploma in Fire

Service Leadership and is working on his bachelor in fire and life safety studies.

He will start in his new position on April 30.

Other news The city gave first three readings to its five-year financial and tax rate bylaws.The average homeowner will see an increase of 3.3 per cent to the city’s portion of the property tax bill, which equals $20.71.

The bylaws will return to council for final adoption on May 14.

An overall summary of property taxes for the average homeowner will be presented at that time.

Council made several decisions around economic development and twinning trips to Japan and China.

First, council approved Mayor Sjostrom using up to $1,000 of her existing travel budget to pay for some costs associated with her upcoming trip to China (flight to Vancouver, hotel and incidentals).

Second, council approved using up to $23,700 from the Asia Pacific Twinning Grant funds to pay for the mayor, three councillors

and the economic development officer to travel to Shiraoi and other sites in Japan.

Council approved the 2012/2013 transit and handyDART contracts.

There is a 1.7 per cent (approximately $4,000) increase to the city’s share of total costs compared to the last agreement.

Legion Lifestyles Show is shaping up to be a busy weekend. There are lots of booths booked and entertainment too. Something for everyone. The concession will be manned by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Another way to support your Legion.

Mother’s Day, May 13, will see the Legion Ladies Auxiliary serve breakfast in the Legion hall. What a great way to celebrate

with the whole family.

Next Legion general meeting is May 1, 7 p.m. There have been some changes in the executive. Come on out and discover what is happening at your Legion. Your opinions will not be heard if you are not there to voice them.

CRD seeking funds to offset First Nations consultation The Cariboo Regional District is resubmitting a resolution originally proposed to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) in 2009.

hey’ve really been left with no option.

Thursday, teachers across the province voted in support of an action plan to oppose Bill 22.

The legislation, passed in March, put in place harsh penalties for teachers and unions who take strike action, during the “cooling off” period.

Fines include $475 per day for teachers engaging in “illegal strike action”, $2,500 a day for union representatives and $1.3 million per day for the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation.

The action plan includes teachers ceasing all extra-curricular activities, as well as public information sessions to raise community awareness.

Quesnel and District Teachers’ Association president Teri Mooring said the decision to withdraw from extra-curricular activities was “not an easy one” and not one teachers took lightly.

But, she added, “it was the only option we have left.”

She’s right.

If government takes away all means to force them to listen, then what do you have left?

If classes run as usual, if no disruption is “allowed” then why would the province even bother with negotiations?

Teachers have no other choice but to pull out from after school sporting, music and theatre activities, it’s their only means to engage government in discussion.

Government has forced them to take action where the outcome negatively impacts students in hopes the pressure will lead them to negotiate rather than legislate.

Even if you oppose strike action, even if you don’t agree with teachers, government should never be able to remove all bargaining rights.

And the disruption to students after-school activities is a prime example of what happens when they do.

The superhero without a cape E

leven years ago, when I was running my own family daycare and supervising seven children aged three and under, music was my saviour.

No, I didn’t put my headphones on and crank my iPod to drown out the sound of the kids.

I’d put a CD in the ghetto blaster, announce to the crew it was party time and play some of their favourite tunes from musicians like Raffi, Fred Penner and Norman Foote.

Watching the little ones prance around in their own unique ways was an instant delight and a welcome reprieve, even in my most frazzled moments.

Their CDs weren’t background music in my home, they were special and reserved for carved-out blocks of time in our day when we all needed a break.

Most of all me.

So when I recently had the opportunity to meet one of my musical saviours who unknowingly helped me keep my sanity all those years, I had two words for him: Thank you.

On A Brighter Note Norman Foote was on the receiving end of those words and was about to put on a show to entertain a lot more than just seven youngsters and me.

He’d be playing for hundreds of folks, ranging from babies to seniors and delighting them all.

On top of that, he would be managing about 100 elementary-aged children up on stage with him who would be serving as his backup singers for their very first time.

I felt like I was meeting a superhero.

A superhero with no cape.

“The most important thing to me is that these kids have a blast,” he said pointing to the excited students who were standing on stage ready to entertain the

camera to capture Daisy conduct her very first surprise interview with him.

As he graciously answered her questions, it dawned on me that his writing style is similar to mine.

His songs, like my columns, are about the everyday.

He writes about grandfather clocks and family pets and things like the crazy colourful shirt he fell in love with at a consignment store.

Of course, the comparisons end there.

Lightyears ahead of me, he’s a Juno Award-winning musician while I can barely carry a tune.

He’s also a brilliant family performer who makes entertaining for all ages look easy when I know the opposite is true.

Norman Foote is a superhero alright.

He might not have a cape, but he’s got one heck of a nice, new second-hand shirt.

audience. “And,” he added, “to put on a great show for everyone out there.”

He succeeded on both counts.

As I watched from my seat in the theatre I couldn’t help but notice what a fabulous time we were all having, particularly my eight-yearold daughter, Daisy, who I could barely keep my eyes off of.

She wasn’t sitting beside me, she was one of those students on the stage.

Singing, laughing and gesturing dramatically, she was clearly having the time of her life.

For months, she and the other back up singers had been learning Norman Foote songs and the movements to go along with his lyrics.

They’d obviously been paying attention.

After the fun, funny show was over, the energy in the place was high and I wanted to bottle it and sell it for millions.

Not knowing how to do that, I waited until the beloved musician finished signing autographs and swooped in with my video

Act like professionals, respect your profession Editor: It has been 50 plus years since I attended school in Quesnel, B.C. Although the Cariboo Junior/Senior High School has since burnt down and replaced many years ago, I have many fond memories of my teachers.

I remember class rooms of 36-40 children.

There was pre-school band practice, noon band practice, after school practice, choir practices, sports after school and at noon. All on the teachers’ time.

I also remember in Grade 10, our teacher, Mrs. Pegues, saying

Yes, all teachers were Mr. or Mrs., or Sir or Mam. Our music teacher/girls counsellor, Mrs. Halleran, taught Jr. band, Sr. band, Jr. orchestra and Sr. orchestra, plus our regular school music classes.

Every year we did a school musical, Rogers and Hammerstein productions, costumes rented from Theatre Under the Stars in Vancouver.

We had sold out seats for the two-night

performances. Christmas was always a manger scene and the Christmas songs and yes – religious ones. Every night was a full house.

She was also my church choir instructor and our organist. Mrs. Halleran will never be forgotten and the hours of work she did every day could never be paid.

It was doing what she loved to do – teach.

We had sport tournaments against Prince George and Williams Lake for best basketball and volleyball teams.

We would travel to and from the towns by school

bus, with teachers.

We practiced at noon and after school.

We had track and field and travelled to and from Prince George and Williams Lake to be the best in the Cariboo.

In those days our teachers were professionals, they dressed in suits and ties, dress shoes and the women were in dresses, suits or skirts and blouses, nylons and heels.

The students took pride in their appearance as well, girls were not allowed to wear jeans or pants.

In the winter we would

wear long stockings, or pants under our skirts and remove them once at school.

There was very little bullying – although there was some but they got the strap or detention after school.

Our teachers today have lost all their pride in themselves and their profession. Look at their appearance at school – jeans, runners... so unprofessional.

I remember singing Oh Canada and God Save our Queen and saying the Lord’s prayer before class every morning, also bible readings every morning.

I bet 75 per cent of our students today could not sing the anthems, or say the Lords Prayer. What a shame. This is progress?

Will our students have these kind of memories – I think not.

They will remember strikes, no sports, no music programs, no report cards and these teachers call themselves professionals.

Act like one, respect your chosen profession, dress appropriately – being called by your first name is not demanding any kind of respect.

LAWN & GARDEN Catnip in the garden is heavenly for cats

T

his article goes against my grain, so to speak, as cats and I don’t exactly see eye to eye. In fact, I’m so allergic to them my eyes are getting itchy just thinking about them. But, I will take one for the team.

Richbar Nursery does grow catnip and the plant does have an interesting background, so for the sake of cat lovers out there – here goes.

Catnip, nepeta cataria, is a hardy (zone 3) perennial herb with white flowers, blooming mid to late summer.

It resembles mint with its greyish green leaves and grows to an average height of 75cm. Plant it in sun or partial sun. Plant it for your cat, but also for your own entertainment. You’ll get a

kick out of watching them roll around in it.

It’s a recreational drug for cats. So far, it is still legal.

Cats can enter the United States even if they have previously dabbled in it.

Catnip does not affect all cats. Only 70 per cent of cats react to catnip, but those are the only ones who filled out the questionnaire honestly. Kittens, fewer than three months of age, do not react, nor does it seem to have an affect on old cats.

In fact it is an inherited reaction and so some cats and their offspring will never react to catnip. Cats release the chemical nepetlactone when they bruise the leaves and stems by rubbing against them. The chemical is inhaled and the fun begins.

They may roll around on the ground, paw at the plants, lick them and chew them. Every cat responds differently. Eating the plant may cause drooling, anxiety, hissing or sleepiness. No worries though; catnip is not toxic. These reactions usually last a few minutes then the cat appears to lose interest. It may return to the plants in a couple of hours and have some fun again.

I would suggest planting your catnip patch in an area by itself. Nepeta is a vigorous plant, plus who wants a bunch of drunken cats partying it up next to your prize fern-leaf peony. I have to hand it to cats, at least they have the sense to roll around in an aromatic herb, whereas dogs love old fish

carcasses!

unning has been Candace Miller’s passion since 1995.

She’s parlayed that passion into Reason2Run, Quesnel’s new running and athletic wear store on Reid Street across from Safeway, opening May 1.

“At one point I was very overweight and, with no knowledge or money for a gym, I began walking,” Miller said.

“As I started to lose weight, I turned walking into running. Once I realized the benefits of running, then I was hooked.”

As her running progressed and she entered various runs and marathons, learning about shoes became a necessity.

“In my training for one marathon, foot problems were a big issue and I wished someone could have helped me choose the right runners for me to avoid the trial and error process. For me, I had to go out of town to buy the right running shoes. I always wished we had something like that in Quesnel.”

Reason2Run is a place where people can get advice on what type of shoe they should be wearing for the type of

running they do.

And Miller said anyone can start running for whatever reason.

“Participation in a running event is confirmation that people of all sizes, shapes, ages and ability can participate.”

She also said running is a confidencebuilder and that’s what gave her the confidence to pursue opening her store.

“I’ve dreamt for 10 years of opening a

running specialty store.”

Miller is also a certified fitness instructor, currently working with Healthy Transformations.

As well as helping customers choose the right running shoes for their lifestyle, Miller is also carrying all the accessories for running, including running and X-training footwear, apparel and sportswear.

“Sports bras are a big part of the apparel and I carry a variety of distributors,” she said.

“Accessories include water bottles, hydration belts, watches and energy products.”

One of the first steps, Miller said, in choosing the correct footwear is to look at foot type, your arch configuration.

“From there we’ll look at how the arch performs while the customer is walking. And that’s how the right shoe is chosen. Even an old insole will tell the story on how a person walks.”

Miller is also offering cross trainers for those who don’t run, but need the right shoe for the gym and some walking shoes and trail runners.

“I’m supplying footwear I know about. I’ve had people ask about other footwear but I’m sticking with what I know.”

Some of the brands Reason2Run carries include Asics, Saucony, Nike, New Balance, Brooks, Avia, Ryka and Reebok, however, Miller said if she doesn’t have exactly what a customer wants, it can be ordered.

Let’s be honest!

After years of trying to get the provincial government to start planning for the inevitable reduction in timber supply in our region, it looks like we might have finally made a breakthrough.

Why? Because some very concerned public servants released documents which revealed how deep and soon timber shortfalls might be realized, and the lengths the current government was willing to go to prevent any mill closures.

Quesnel to host seed swap May 6 Wanna swap some seeds?

Quesnel is hosting a seed swap in conjunction with the Earth and Agricultural Event being held May 6, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the College of New Caledonia.

According to Wikipedia, “Seed swaps are events where gardeners meet to exchange seeds. Swap meet events, where growers meet and exchange their excess seeds in person, are also growing in popularity. In part this is due to increased interest in organic gardening and heritage or heirloom plant varietals.

“This reflects gardeners’ interest in ‘unusual or particular varieties of flowers and vegetables’,” Kathy Jentz of Washington Gardener Magazine said.

Seed swaps also help consumers who, due to increases in the cost of living or those wishing to cut down on expenditures, grow their own food. Some events are organized as part of an educational effort, where visitors are taught gardening and growing skills and how to preserve an area’s cultural heritage and biodiversity.

The event is free and is designed to both educate and to unite people who are experienced and those just beginning to dig in the earth.

A children’s play area as well as a video presentation are going to be available for the entire event.

One of the objectives of the organizers of the seed swap is to start a seed bank.

A seed bank is a place to keep and record the seed.

It ensures that the variety is maintained by keeping viable seeds on hand of

all varieties of the plants collected.

Currently, there is not a seed bank in Quesnel.

In the case of food crops, many useful plants that were developed over centuries are no longer used for commercial agricultural production and are becoming rare.

Storing seeds also guards against catastrophic events like natural disasters, outbreaks of disease, or war.

What a great way to spend a Sunday.

I thank whomever made these documents available, because they forced their political masters to put all the documents up on their website for everyone to see. You can also view them on my website at www.bobsimpsonmla. ca.

I’ve never understood why both provincial and local government leaders were not willing to admit and start planning for the possibility of a worst case scenario in our region: timber shortages, major mill closures, and job losses.

Planning for this, while trying to do what’s possible to mitigate it without putting our long term forest health at risk, would have demonstrated true leadership, instead of the boosterism we’ve experienced thus far.

Last week’s documents confirm that sometime between 2014 and 2020 we won’t have enough timber available in our immediate area to keep all our mills running as they do today.

So let’s figure out what that means and how we’re going to adapt to this scenario.

Surely we can be more creative than simply exhausting the rest of our forest resource to keep mills open for a few more years, which is the essence of the current provincial government’s thinking.

Between mining, agriculture, tourism, and the emerging bioeconomy, we should be able to create replacement jobs, if not grow job opportunities in our region. We have an older workforce that will see many people retiring in the same timeframe as our log supply diminishes. Let’s make sure we have the community supports and amenities that will keep those retirees here. Those same amenities will also help us keep our young people around while attracting new entrepreneurs and new working families to our communities as well.

Being honest about what’s facing us is the only way to uncork the creative juices that will help us plan our way through the upcoming transition. My hope is that rather than continuing to pretend we can avoid any mill closures, the provincial government will now enable us to roll up our sleeves and start figuring out what our realistic options are.

Turn hardship into glory I

like the story Dr. Lenore Campbell recalls from one of her patients: “Early in my career as a doctor I went to see a patient who was coming out of anesthesia. Far off church chimes sounded. “I must be in heaven,” the woman murmured. Then she saw me. “No, I can’t be,” she said, “there’s Dr. Campbell.”

Or the story of when in 1858 the Illinois legislature sent someone else to the U.S. Senate instead of Abraham Lincoln, although Lincoln had won the popular vote.

When a sympathetic friend asked Lincoln how he felt, he said, “Like the boy who stubbed his toe: I am too big to cry and too badly hurt to laugh.”

The Bible tells us the story (1 Kings 18-20) of when the prophet Elijah experienced discouragement with God when he was threatened to be killed by the evil Queen Jezebel after he defeated her 450 prophets of Baal.

Running scared for his life: “And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty...and now they are trying to kill me too.” (1 kings 19: 9-10).

Elijah had just done some big time ministry for God and in return he gets this?

we can take from this is, God will not leave us living in perpetual discouragement. Rather God will encounter (speak to) those who are running from Him and send us back into service.

To quote Philip Yancey, “Endurance is not just the ability to bear a hard thing, but to turn it into glory.”

The Quesnel & District Chamber of Commerce is feeling very optimistic! We have had meetings over the last few weeks that are indicative of some exciting possibilities for our region. On March 13th the Chamber coordinated a meeting with the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces. We discussed the evolving significance of Northern BC and the potential security challenges with the proposed pipe line projects and lack of a Canadian Force base in Northern BC. We discussed our concerns around interface fire challenges and flooding due to the devastation of the mountain pine beetle. Out of this meeting there is ongoing dialogue with our Economic Development Officer April Goffic, around potential opportunities and partnerships for our region with the Canadian Forces. Lieutenant Tony Wright is also interested in connecting with families in Quesnel that have loved ones in the forces and we mentioned the special recognition day coordinated by our Quesnel Rodeo Club at the BCRA Finals.

On March 14th we had an exceptional presentation from Nazko First Nation on the proposed Nazko Gateway Project, which calls for the expansion of three-phase power, creating a westward gateway designed to spur significant long-term economic development and business investments throughout the Nazko, Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District. The start-up investment and long-term operations of the projects identified in the plan would inject billions of dollars into the economy and generate thousands of long-term, well-paying jobs, directly and indirectly, for many years. This is the type of vision and diversification that we need to be exploring. We applaud Nazko First Nation for their leadership in coordinating the partnerships and brining all levels of local government and the business community to the table. No matter what obstacle or opportunity, we will flourish as a region by working together.

On March 29th we had a full house at our Chamber Member Appreciation event.

It was a fun evening where new businesses and members had the opportunity to network. We were delighted that the business delegation from China was able to attend and we were able to connect them with various local businesses. There are some very exciting announcements coming shortly that will have a significant benefit to our community and we are proud to be a part of this dialogue. We would like to congratulate Tracey Granger of Essentials Boutique, for winning our Membership Drive. We would like to thank Zack for providing us with an update of the Long Board Team skating to Vancouver to raise funds for cancer. We would also like to thank Eric for his presentation on his program to raise funds for bursaries for people coming from single parent homes. This is the type of youth leadership that will drive our community to success in the future. Our Business Resource Team which includes Community Futures, the City of Quesnel, Economic Development and the Chamber of Commerce, launched an exciting campaign at the event, where we will be going out and visiting new businesses in our community.

Upcoming Chamber events includes a Tourism Stakeholder meeting on April 17th from 2-4 at the Visitor Centre. We are seeking operator’s ideas on unique packages and marketing messages to better promote our region. We live in a spectacular part of the world and this really is our opportunity to hear from our tourism members. QDA wins BIABC award ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

Quesnel Downtown Association was honoured recently at the Business Improvement Area of British Columbia’s Best in the West awards gala in Nanaimo.

They placed first in the Community Programs, Partnerships category against downtown Langley and downtown Maple Ridge.

“It’s nice to be recognized for the hard work to give back to the community,” Carol Pitkin, chair of QDA’s revitalization committee said.

“We were happy to accept the award on behalf of the QDA and the community of Quesnel.”

Pitkin was quick to credit the partnerships formed in order to access the funding for the revitalization project.

“We had great partnerships with QDA, South Quesnel, the federal government and our local businesses,” she said.

She added QDA had shelf-ready projects, so when the announcement was made that $23 million worth of funding to communities hit hard by economic downturn was available, in just two weeks 22 applications were submitted to Northern Development Initiative Trust.

With 11 downtown businesses and the South Quesnel BIA prepared to foot 25 per cent of the cost of the projects, QDA’s submission garnered $1.5 million in funding including a second project submitted by the Central Interior Poultry Producers Association.

From wall murals to downtown hosts and several business exterior upgrades, the QDA’s revitalization committee co-ordinated all aspects of the project.

The revitalization project covered 25 projects spread over 11 businesses and groups.

Quesnel’s total portion of the grant was $757,250 and the QDA, South Quesnel and the businesses involved contributed a total of $196,750 for an impressive $954,000 in project-generated employment for 66 people and all the material purchases.

“They all fit with our vision for a friendly, safe atmosphere for a people-friendly downtown,” Pitkin said at the conclusion of the project.

Quesnel Downtown Association isn’t resting on its laurels though, Pitkin said.

“Right now we’re putting together a five-year plan for downtown Quesnel and what the area will look like then.”

If during the run a fielder hits the wicket, the batter whose wicket it is is once again out. That happens until the captain calls the innings, or until ten of the offensive team’s batters are out.

The players then switch and continue until the game is won.

That is the essence of cricket, stripped though, of the finer points of the game.

Quesnel youth dominate in Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Quesnel youth did well at last weekend’s Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo.

Junior barrel racing was domi-

nated by Quesnelites with Brett Wills coming first, followed by Lane Wills and Rikki Hutnyk taking $339.66, $259.74 and $179.82 respectively.

Two thirds of the junior steer riding podium were also occu-

pied by young'uns from gold pan city. Dustin Piers took top honours and a $286.44 purse, with Clay Watercrese sneaking into third to nab $175.56.

The younger kids got in on the action too, with Dyson Laneve

taking second for $120.00.

The adults didn't fair too poorly either.

Clayton Honeybourn took the first spot in tie-down roping along with the $743.85 purse, while Jody Coe roped her way

to the top and $786.42.

In bull riding, Matt O'Flynn managed to hold on for second and $831.86.

Gary Nicoslon teamed up with Glen Brown from Crofton to tie for third and $643.68 to each.

Cutting it close, away from the heard JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter After an 8 year hiatus, cutting is back in Quesnel.

"It's probably the most exciting thing you can do on a horse with your clothes on," is how vicepresident of the B.C. Cutting Horse Association, Robin Hay, explained it.

Which captures the excitement of the sport, but may have you wondering what cutting, horse

and your clothes fit together.

Cutting is, put simply, keeping one cow away from the herd.

The horse and rider come into the paddock that has a herd of cows.

The rider and horse then separate one cow from the herd, at which point the rider drops the reins and it's up to the horse to keep the cow from going where it wants to go.

That's when the action begins, as both

This usually happens about three times in two and a half minutes.

All this action will explode on April 28 and 29 at the Alex Fraser Park, 9:00 a.m.

Sunday Will Come Mary watched her Son come baring his cross, With grief and despair, she felt such a loss.

But because of Him, we will rise from the grave, So follow the Messiah who is mighty to save.

Rejoice on what Christ overcame on that day.

For the gift of exaltation for us, He did pay.

Families sealed together with eternal love, Is the binding cord from our Father above.

When a loved one goes ahead, it is the Lord’s will, We will meet them again and our arms they will fill.

The plan of Salvation brings joy to my heart, And peace in my soul, may we all take apart.

When I hear the glad tidings, “We can die no more”, It lifts up my being and my spirit does soar.

Echos ring out, like the chimes of a bell, Your Sunday will come, All is well, All is well.

Ducks Unlimited Banquet It’s that time again, the “Ducks Banquet” is here, We’ve saved all our funds for over a year.

To save all this money will take quite awhile, For there’s tickets, and dinner and then there’s the style.

One brings the whole family, it’s their yearly treat, An outing like this just cannot be beat.

First comes the dinner, it’s unique and divine, While placed on the tables are bottles of wine.

You purchase these booklets, they have coloured tickets, Place them in buckets till they stick up like picketsl Put more tickets in one bucket, how smart can this be, If they pull out your name, you can say it’s for free.

They have a small auction it’s silent they say, Each running up to change what they’ll pay.

The live auction has items, some big and some small, They too take up nearly three quarters the hall.

You look at the items they sell from the floor, In hopes that you may get a bid in the door.

There’s a guy in the corner, his bids are unreal, I wonder deep down, does he know how I feel?

I bid and I bid, but he bids even

higher, The auctioneer says “Sold: to that buyer.

They bring up the buckets, a ticket to draw, Hope they find mine, it’s like needles and straw.

The one making the draw, he puts his hand in, Yes, you have guessed it, mine’s still in the tin.

You sit there and ponder, you’ve just been a jerk, With all of your wisdom, even that didn’t work!

And off to the side, a ladies auctions in store, No bids from the men will they take from the floor.

These ladies are crazy, they bid with all might, The bids on these items are clear out of sight.

Very soon now, this evening will end, Did we win something free? All this will depend, Yes we’re coming back to this auction next year, For all of these memories in our heart we hold dear.

So come to this banquet and buy up some loot, For this whole events been one complete hoot.

This gala evenings been a learning affair, Come see for yourself, there’s none can compare!

The Dogs There are some dogs on the farm who are unique to you and me, They’re quite best friends in a dog way you see.

Pete, Jem and Sam are the special dogs on the Anderson farm, They are gentle and kind and mean no harm.

But with gifted dogs, they are some fearsome creatures, Let me explain, the wonderful features.

Pete is three, but still a young dog, He can be really messy, like he jumped in a bog.

He’s a fairly small Chihuahua you may know, His favourite thing to do is chase cows or horses or maybe even a doe.

That’s all about Pete, let’s go onto Sam. That silly little puppy, his name rhymes with ham.

Sam is great, Sam is energetic, Sam is curious, Sam is big, Sam is nice, He’ll follow ol’ Grandpa around, maybe once or twice.

He’s new to the farm, so he likes to explore, He whines, but doesn’t bark and roar.

He’s not even half a year old.

Now we have Jem! A dog with a kind mind and body she must hold.

She’s a Blue Healer, different from a cortically like Sam, but a lucky one.

She rests and follows Grandpa, and thinks of adventurous fun, But soon after the chores, she rests in the afternoon sun.

These are the gifted dogs who roam the fields, They’re a big ol’ trio with a friendship they wield.
