oseph Kony was not a household name in North America one month ago. But a viral video from the U.S.-based charity Invisible Children has successfully shone the spotlight on the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in central Africa. Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court for countless human rights violations. It also sparked what Victoria-based documentary filmmaker Jordan Clark calls “the first social media revolution.” “It’s extremely effective. It’s showing that the power really is in the hands of the people. It’s just in a new medium … sharing a link on Facebook,” said Clark, program co-ordinator at the Pacific Film and New Media Academy. “I don’t think that they’re going to solve the problems in the region, but it certainly opens the door and reinvents how powerful social media can be when you’re trying to expose an issue or get information out.” PLEASE SEE: Charity main beneficiary of film, Page A15

Saanich police have seized the motorcycle seen barrelling down the Trans-Canada Highway at speeds reaching 300 km/h in a video posted online earlier this month. But on Wednesday officers were unsure whether they’d be able to charge the man they believe was behind the handlebars on the bike. “We don’t believe the owner is the rider,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen. “At this point, any action that’s taken is going to be against the registered owner.” The registered owner of the blue 2006 Yamaha is an Esquimalt woman. The suspected rider is her son, in his 20s. The two-minute video, showing the motorcycle dashboard and the driver’s first-person view weaving in between vehicles, was posted to YouTube on April 8 and quickly came to the attention of police. The digital speedometer shows the bike hitting speeds of 299 km/h. PLEASE SEE: Reckless rider, Page A11
