Grand Forks Airport to see more traffic? CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter

The Grand Forks Airport could see more use in the future with WestJet’s new short-haul carriers. Though still in its planning stages, WestJet’s new program announced early-February is aimed towards regional operations that will serve smaller Canadian destinations. At the moment, the local airport is available for 24-hour medical evacuations, BC Fire Services use during the summer months, aircraft fuel sales and recreational use. “Our key partner is the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), in regional district collaboration, because they also manage and look after the service at the Trail airport, which is seeing passenger service with coastal airports,” explained Coun. Cher Wyers. “We’re talking (to the RDKB) for a regional collaboration and to work together to improve transportation infrastructure in our region because it is a shortfall that has been recognized by the former economic development innovation chair, George Penfold, and his overview of the Boundary Country in September 2010.” The RDKB has realized the potential of both airports but the costs of operating both are expensive, Wyers pointed out. “I understand WestJet has something planned,” explained Wyers. “I was looking back and the last information I had in Jan. 25 was that the mayor of Castlegar had approached WestJet about the proposed regional services.” Castlegar’s Chief Administrative Officer John Malcolm stated the city did speak to WestJet upon hearing plans of entering into regional air service. “We did contact them and they said while they’ve decided to looking into regional service, they are still looking at a list of airports throughout the country that may work for their routes,” he explained. “We’ve indicated that we’re interested but we haven’t heard from them any further. We’re hopeful.” WestJet Public Relations Officer Robert Palmer stated, “There have been no discussions yet, as we are still far early in the process. We will not be in a position to look at various communities for some time.” While Castlegar is known for its topography and terrain, with two mountain faces on both

ends of their runway, the city also has to contend with its changing weather. “The difference in the airplanes that Air Canada Jazz uses and what WestJet is proposing to use, is the technology and the navigational systems in the Bombardier aircraft that will be used are much better,” explained Wyers. “Not only for the topography but also the lower weather limits that impact the north-west running valley over there with the Columbia River system.” On the other hand, the Grand Forks Airport faces different weather patterns and has more open days due to lack of body of water and the temperature changes. “Our airport is the only airport in the entire West Kootenay Boundary region that has 24-hour accessibility for Medevac,” stated Wyers. “None of the other airports have that capability and that is our primary service for the entire region.” Grand Forks Airport is the only airport with 24-hour accessibility east of Kelowna, B.C., until the Alberta border, stated Wyers. Along with Medevac, the airport is used by B.C. Fire services. “The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources have expanded over the last few years and they have quite a big operation and a base here,” stated Wyers. “We do see helicopters and aerial spotting planes stationed here during the summer, any time from spring to fall under contract with the Ministry of Forests.” Wyers pointed out despite the opportunities coming, it does require community and partnership to work. Including the efforts to boost usage of the airport, the lighting systems do require replacing. “The lighting systems were (installed) in 1998,” she added. “All the solar panels and batteries that were put up on our hill tops are becoming dated and eventually need replacing.” The lights and panels are serviced regularly, but will need to be updated some time soon. “It’s nice to hear that WestJet has considered our region,” stated Wyers. “Hopefully it’ll be a collaboration between all three communities that have an airport.” Along with Grand Forks and Castlegar, Trail also has an airport. Grand Forks Airport has a 4,300-foot (1,310-metre) runway with two taxiways and aprons. The airport is now equipped with 24 airport landing lights which allows for emergency access flights 24 hours a day.
