March Madness at LEC

The Walnut Grove Gators survived an upset scare to move on to the quarter-finals. The Gators, seeded fourth at the 20-team B.C. AAA senior boys basketball championships, held on for a 78-73 victory over the Mount Douglas Rams on Wednesday morning on day two of the five-day March Madness tournament. The win moves Walnut Grove to the quarter-finals tonight (Thursday) at 8:15 p.m.

They will face the winner of the W.J. Mouat Hawks and Kitsilano Blue Demons, who played after The Times’ press deadline on Wednesday. In Walnut Grove’s win, Jadon Cohee poured in 33 points while Brad Hoffman and De’Sean Monsanto scored 15 points apiece. The Gators led by three at the half, but fell behind in the third quarter by six points before rallying to take the lead for good. Walnut Grove is the lone Langley team which qualified for the provincials and they are looking for the school’s best finish since

2000 when they placed fourth. This is the tournament’s second year at the LEC, with a contract to stage it at the venue through 2015. This is the tournament’s 67th year. Last year’s inaugural tournament — it had previously been played at the PNE Agrodome for the better part of the past 30 years — drew 13,604 fans over the course of the five-day event. The championship final is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. and last year’s game drew more than 4,000 fans.

The 19-year-old Surrey man charged in connection with the choking of a bus driver and stabbing of a Langley passenger remains behind bars. Steven Fayant is charged with aggravated assault for the stabbing of a 41-year-old Langley man who was getting off a bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall on Feb. 21. Fayant is also charged with assault in connection with an attempt to strangle a Surrey bus driver on Feb. 18. He has made more than half a dozen court appearances since his arrest on Feb. 23. He appeared in court again on Tuesday and will be back March 20 to fix a date for his trial. Fayant’s arrest happened after a Langley Mountie recognized the man from surveillance footage provided by TransLink. The victim of the stabbing wasn’t known to the suspect and it isn’t known what provoked the stabbing, said police. He was stabbed in the back as he was getting off the bus. The victim’s brother gave chase but the assailant got away. The 41-year-old victim is expected to make a full physical recovery. In the Surrey incident, the bus driver said he asked a young man to move down the bus. The suspect complied, but later returned to the driver and started choking him. The assailant suddenly let go and ran off the bus. Fayant has a criminal history and is before the courts for unrelated break-in charges in Langley.
