Since then we have published 10 magazines and created a membership of almost 200 businesswomen who meet monthly. We launched our podcast hosted by Michelle Cowan and plans are in the pipeline for more things for our members. Watch this space!

Accountant who has launched a new accountancy service aimed specifically at women, you can read about this on page 76. We also welcome Philip Stoner Jewellers who I am sure many of our ladies cannot wait to see the goodies they hope to bring along to some of our meetings, they will certainly be at Grantley Hall alongside another partner Lexus.

I am also delighted to welcome two new ambassadors, actress and presenter Natalie Anderson and top DJ Stephanie Hirst. I’m sure members and guests will get the chance to meet the ladies at a future event.

Many members will be signing off for the holidays now the children have broken up from school. I hope everyone has a great summer break and look forward to seeing everyone again after the holidays. Gill

As I write this, we are preparing for our special event at Grantley Hall in September. This sell-out afternoon tea event will be hosted by member Lisa Darwin a real fashion expert, who for the last 25 years has hosted the Leeds Fashion Ball. Check out the member area as Lisa is also hosting another fashion event in December at Grantley Hall called Fashion Rocks, I won’t be missing that. Some of our members have agreed to model at the show and I think there are one or two places left if you would like to ‘strut your stuff’ on the catwalk. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what size you are, we celebrate all women and encourage you to come forward and have some fun. I would also like to welcome a new partner

Radio star Stephanie joins Yorkshire Businesswoman With over 15 awards and 11 years of hosting the biggest breakfast show outside of London, we are delighted that Stephanie Hirst, one of radio’s biggest stars has joined Yorkshire Businesswoman as an ambassador. With over 15 awards and 11 years of hosting the biggest breakfast show outside of London, we are delighted that Stephanie Hirst, one of radio’s biggest stars has joined Yorkshire Businesswoman as an ambassador. During her career, Stephanie has also presented for BBC Breakfast, ITV’s Lorraine and is regular panellist on C5’s The Jeremy Vine Show. She has written for The Independent, The Telegraph and teamed up with Kurt Geiger to promote their brand. She has also appeared recently on Loose Women. Starting her broadcasting career aged just 12, making tea for the DJs at Radio Aire in Leeds, she eventually secured her own slot on the station’s overnight radio show aged 16. This

took Stephanie on her unbelievable journey hosting some of the biggest commercial radio shows in the UK, including the national Sunday Top 40 show ‘Hit40UK’ for three years, along with a weekly spin off chart show on C4’s T4 interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars. Born and brought up in Barnsley by her adoring parents, Stephanie always had a dream of working in radio & television. Her determination and passion to succeed would guarantee she would fulfil her dream, but there were many twists and turns along the way. One of which would completely threaten to destroy her career she had worked so hard to achieve. Stephanie always says, ‘if you believe

it, you can achieve it’ and tours the country giving talks about this to businesses, conferences & universities, with her brand ‘Believe Achieve’ She says “You just have to believe. By putting your mind into a state of belief, this creates an energy force around you. It attracts positivity, and from that allows you to reach your potential and manifest your dreams.” We are lucky that Stephanie has agreed to speak at one of our events on this subject, a treat not to miss! She is also a trustee and fellow of the Radio Academy and received an honorary degree from Leeds Beckett University. Today, she broadcasts nationally for Bauer’s Hits Radio and is very much in demand as a public speaker, host, compare and event/ festival DJ. Stephanie will be joining us at some of our events, so do make sure you are signed up. Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

CEO Steve Waud comments: “The recovery of the north during Covid has been fantastic to see, as people have pivoted, adapted and started again. We have been delighted to support so many new businesses and 64% of our loans were given to companies in the most deprived areas of the UK, which is incredibly encouraging. That is why we exist – to support businesses get funding in areas where it might not otherwise be within reach.” BEF provides funding, support and advice for growing businesses across all sectors. Its aim is to deliver flexible finance to businesses in geographical areas that need it most, by providing unsecured business loans when other lenders such as mainstream banks cannot fully assist.

Yorkshire’s Business Enterprise Fund is delighted to announce it has completed a record year of funding to entrepreneurs and small business across the north - with growth in women-led businesses in particular. The independent, not for profit

loans provider has invested over £14.6million to the region, and over a third of the companies supported (33%) were women-led businesses, a rise of over 8% on last year. In total, the lender has boosted the region’s economy by £58.4m, with

21% of the support over the last 12 months has been to construction, 1 3 % to h o s p i t a l i t y, 1 5 % to manufacturing and 18% to business services. Steve concludes: “We continue to work in some of the most challenging and economically and socially deprived communities in the country and now support businesses across the North of England. By supporting the lowest income communities and most disadvantaged areas, we aim to alleviate poverty in the communities we serve. We also aim to support groups that have traditionally been less represented, so we are thrilled to be seeing an increase in funding to women-led organisations.” For information on how to secure or discuss business funding, please go to www.befund.org Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

Agency in the spotlight:

Youbee Media Ltd Since May 2021, over 4.75million young people have started an apprenticeship in the UK. With more competition looking for an ‘on the job education’, it can seem as though the same people are fighting for an opportunity in a top agency. So how do you make yourself stand out from the crowd? Sophie Mei Lan sits down with recent apprenticeship graduate, Emma Pearson from Youbee Media to find out.

So, Emma – can you tell us a bit about yourself? Yes, I’m Youbee’s digital marketer and I’ve been with the team for around 18 months. I live just outside of Leeds and have a passion for creating content on social media. My interest in marketing ignited in school when I studied Business and Media at A Level and since then, my curiosity has continued to grow. What attracted you to work at Youbee Media?

18 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

Before my apprenticeship began, I was presented with other job opportunities. However, Youbee Media really stood out. With no previous office experience, I felt a smaller business was the path to take. I could also see the passion from Rebecca, and I knew that with a friendly, welcoming employer I would feel completely comfortable in my first job role. There’s so much potential growth in not only me and my role, but also where the business could go. I have already done so much more in my career than I thought I would do.

What’s next for you? I’m proud to say that I’ve recently bee n promoted to marketing executive, which is really exciting. I will be able to develop my skills, work on business development and continue learning. The opportunities at Youbee Media are endless as the team is growing so quickly. I’m really excited to support Youbee Media’s growth, strengthen relationships with clients and develop new relationships with professionals in our network. What advice would you give to someone looking to start an apprenticeship in Digital Marketing? From this apprenticeship I’ve learnt that when challenges arise, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help and use the experience of those around you. Being in a small team has really helped me to reach out, learn from others and have autonomy in my role. An apprenticeship can be invaluable at the start of your career, but you definitely get out of it what you put in.

What was your first job?

A coffee with Natalie Anderson Yorkshire Businesswoman editor Gill Laidler recently caught up with our new Ambassador - actress, presenter and podcaster Natalie Anderson. Many of you will remember Natalie for her appearance as Stella Davenport in the medical drama The Royal and Alicia Metcalfe in the television soap Emmerdale, a role she held for five years from 2010 to 2015. As well as regularly appearing on This Morning and Loose Women and many stage plays, more recently Natalie has been playing the role of Lexi Cal-der in the soap Hollyoaks. She also runs the very popular website and podcast The Capsule. What did you want to do when you were growing up? My ambitions at that time were to rule the world, like many other young children, I wanted to act, I wanted to do everything. I had huge ideas of going to Hollywood, wanting that kind of life, I was just dreaming big. I suppose I only ever really wanted to be an actor. I grew up in the 1980’s on a Bradford council estate, it was Thatcher’s Britain, it was really tough. My mum and dad were separated and I spent a lot of time with my grandad who loved old mu-sicals and films from the 1930’s 40’s and 50’s, he basically brought me up on Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and all the amazing Hollywood legends and I went from quite a bleak time in my childhood to this wonderful technicolour world in the films and musicals and I thought, that is exactly where I want to live.

20 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

My first job was helping my dad in his hair salon in Bradford. I used to sweep up and rinse everyone’s perm solution off, I loved it, I learnt a lot and loved watching my dad. I don’t think he paid me until I was 12, then he gave me £10 for the day, which was quite a lot of money then, I also used to do his ironing too! Did you go to university or attend higher education? I went to the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts which was founded by Sir Paul McCart-ney, I attended between 18 and 21. I chose that one as most London schools only taught acting whereas Liverpool offered acting and music. The facilities they had were amazing and I completed a degree in performing arts. When did you start acting? I started acting professionally when I was eleven. I appeared in a play at The Bradford Play-house, but professionally in television I was 14, I worked for Children’s BBC in a show called The Biz, people might remember it because the show really kickstarted Paul Nichols ca-reer. It was about a stage school in London, but the interesting thing is I auditioned for the first series of the show, I was eleven going on twelve, but they felt I was a little bit too young. Fast forward three years and we got a phone call from the BBC saying they had writ-ten a role for me called Francesca and would I join them in the third series, so it was pretty amazing to be working in television at that time. I learned so much working for the BBC. What does your son Freddie think when he sees you on television? When Freddie sees me on the telly, he doesn’t even flinch, he’s quite used to it and he’s been lucky enough to have seen the inner mechanics of it. I think the only time it was a bit weird for him was when there were some emotional scenes on Hollyoaks recently and he was quite teary. I was sitting right next to him and said why are you upset, I’m sitting next to you and

Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

he explained he didn’t like to see me upset and my mum says the same, she doesn’t like it either. How do you juggle family life when working away? It is tough when work takes me away from home, but Freddie is so robust and it’s what he has known since he was born and the same goes for my husband James, we’ve been to-gether 18 years now and got together quite early in my career, so it’s what we have always known . We were 6 months married when I was offered a job in the West End and he stayed in Leeds and I went to London for a year and we saw each other one day a week. It was tough, but it’s kind of what we know, it’s our framework, and we are lucky that we have my mum and James’ mum to help with childcare. Fred’s only ever been with his nan-na’s if he’s not been at nursery. That said, we really do value our time together as a family and when we are together, we make the most of it. So, what is a typical day like? There is no such thing as a typical

22 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

day for me. I never know what I will be doing from one day to the next to be honest! Some days I can be on the radio or perhaps on set somewhere or in another country or in character, other days at home working on the podcast, every day is so vastly different. The only time I have had any real kind of routine was during the pan-demic, but I love that each day is different, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster, you don’t know how the day is going to end but that is exciting and makes you feel alive. What is the worst part of what you do? Uncertainty, you could go weeks, months, even years without getting a job. You have to maintain a good mental attitude which can be incredibly difficult, especially when you feel that people are rejecting you. I suppose that is the unpredictable nature of the job. And the best? I love to see people’s reaction, engaging with the audience and the people, that is 110% the best thing. Whether you are doing a play, or someone stops you in

the street, whatever it is, the fact that you have connected with somebody which can bring them joy, I love that. This is why I do what I do really. Is there anything that you would like to change? I think that would be just the casting process that people get feedback quicker than they do now. There is a thing now where casting directors have to tell actors whether or not they have got the job. In the old days you had to just wait and wait and wait hoping and praying that you had got the job. Sometimes you would never hear back or get any feedback which is quite damaging to selfesteem and the opinion of yourself, this was quite damaging to a lot of people’s mental health. If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t acting, 110% I would be an event planner, I love it. I love planning events and in some respect it’s similar to putting a show together, you have all these different elements to bring together to create something that will give joy and pleasure to an audience or

Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

23

your client and it makes people happy and makes them smile. I just love pulling all these ideas together and creating something magical. Years ago, I even built a wedding website just in case I wanted to become a wedding planner! What would you do if you were starting your career again? If I was starting again I would be much much braver knowing what I know now. There have been so many times in my life, because I suffer with anxiety, that I’ve played smaller roles or I have said no because I was afraid, but now I would just throw myself in at the deep end. If you could, what advice would you give to your younger self? Again, this would be, to be brave. Don’t play small because of other people. When I was growing up if you were too confident you were a show off, the message now, which I love is don’t let anyone dim your sparkle, believe in yourself and really go for it as it’s OK to love yourself. These are qualities that I am teaching Freddie. Where did you get the idea from for The Capsule? The idea came to me a long time ago. During my final days at Emmerdale I was writing for Hello magazine and writing a lot about fashion and I had this idea of building something around a capsule wardrobe. I worked for Hobbs when FACT FILE: • Husband: James • Children: Freddie, 10 • What car do you drive? Audi • What do you do in your leisure time? Workout and watch The Real Housewives (it’s my guilty pleasure!)

24 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

I was 18 and I learned about the principals of a capsule wardrobe and the importance of choosing the right pieces. I started to think about the money people were spending on clothes and not wearing that would end up in landfill, so I wanted to create a blog site where I would do all the hard work choosing all the great pieces, where people could just come to us to get their capsule wardrobe. In 2019 I was really struggling with my anxiety so I was looking for other things, therapies, products, anything I could find to take the edge off my anxiety. I realised when I was post-ing information that we had a massive spike in hits to the website which made me think, well it can’t just be me that feels like that, so the idea of leading The Capsule into what it is now stemmed from that. I thought you could make a Capsule for everything that makes you feel better, the idea of having everything for your wellbeing in one place with all the infor-mation and inspiration that you need. How did the pandemic affect you? The pandemic was very tough for everyone. Home schooling for me was very difficult, living and trying to work in the same household with schooling was hard. Having an only child who couldn’t see any other children for months on end was not good and not seeing his grandparents was so tough on him too. But, what it gave me was time to nurture the pod-cast which I had started in 2019 and it gave me time •

Where is your favourite restaurant? The Mumbai Village near where we live and Bibis in Leeds What is your favourite food and drink? I think a good curry and a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Where is your favourite

to speak with wellbeing experts and practitioners that not only helped me personally but enabled me to offer that help to oth-ers, so in a way that time was bitter sweet because without the pandemic, I wouldn’t have had time. What are your plans for the future? I’m planning to just keep doing what I’m doing really. I’ve always loved and admired older entertainers Barbara Windsor, Joanna Lumley, Judy Dench, all these incredible women who have had lengthy and amazing careers they have all really worked hard, I admire Joan Col-lins so much I always watch her interviews and she always advises you to say yes as you never know when they won’t want you. I’ll really just carry on taking jobs and see where that takes me. But, in terms of The Capsule which is something I am really proud of, I want to build on the momentum and the success of the podcast especially and focus much more on the brand. I think podcasting is a great way of reaching people you wouldn’t normally be able to under normal circumstances, for instance we have reached audiences in countries across the world which is amazing. I’m just working on our future guest list and we have some wonderful people lined up. My family is the most important thing to me in the world, so I need to continue making sure I have a perfect work life balance.

The benefitsof fermented skincare By: Jane t Mi lner-Wal k er - Fo u n d er of Bespok e Ad v an tag e

Let’s be honest … fermentation doesn’t sound like something you want to apply to your face. Whilst there are many synergies between the food industry and the beauty industry – ingredients, packaging, science, fragrances, and flavours to name but a few, fermentation is probably not high on your list of benefits you are looking for when seeking out your next moisturiser. But perhaps it should be. Fermentation is more often associated with food products, and their benefits for our gut health. Sauerkraut and kimchi are both examples of fermented products, which contain high levels of live bacteria (known as probiotics) that break down in the gut to restore balance and to support digestive health. It is not only gut health that fermented ingredients are good for, but they are also good for the health of our skin. Fermented beauty products are nothing new, hailing from Korea and Japan, you have probably been using fermented beauty products for some time, without even knowing this. Fermentation

is a metabolic process in which compounds are broken down by micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, into smaller compounds. It occurs in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic conditions), and in the presence of beneficial microorganisms (yeasts, moulds, and bacteria) that obtain their energy through the fermentation process. During the fermentation process, these beneficial microbes break down sugars and starches into alcohols and acids. Fermented skincare is rich in healthy bacteria and probiotics and can support the skin in balancing and strengthening microorganisms that make up our skin’s microbiome. One of the biggest difficulties for a skincare product with a large molecular size is to penetrate deep enough into our skin to be able to deliver optimum benefits. However, with fermentation breaking down larger sized molecules into smaller molecules, the reduction in size aids in absorbing active ingredients to where our skin needs it most. Sometimes, chemical compounds in a specific extract can irritate our skin type (we have all been there) especially if you have sensitive skin. Fermentation assists in breaking down Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

this irritant to reduce its effect on sensitive skin. There are numerous fermented ingredients from green tea, to mushrooms, sake extract, alpha hydroxy acids to natural extracts created from ingredients such as red ginseng and black tea that can be found in skincare. Glycolic acid, in a natural form, is derived from fruits, plants and sugar cane, and is great for exfoliation and to stimulate cell renewal. Why use them Some of the most common reasons to seek out beauty products with fermented ingredients include To treat acne Fermented skincare products contain probiotic bacteria that help in maintaining healthy bacteria in the gut and in attacking harmful bacteria in our gut that cause acne.

to achieve a plumper and softer complexion, fermented soy can help boost your skin’s own production of hyaluronic acid. Green tea seed oil has superior moisturising benefits, and the complex fermentation process releases an extra hit of vitamin E, free fatty acids, and polyphenols. Eczema Eating fermented foods also assists in clarifying and rejuvenating our skin from the inside out. When used in topical skincare, this fermentation process increases the bioavailability of ingredients, which means that they penetrate our skin at a deeper level. This is ideal for anyone with particularly dry skin. Kefir is made from fermented milk and has been found to cure eczema. Fermented skincare products help to strengthen and balance the skin, retain moisture, and improve the PH balance of our skin. Brands to look out for

Keeps us looking younger One of the best benefits of fermented products, is that they help in slowing down the natural ageing process of our skin. Yeast is a form of fermentation that is found in most anti-ageing skincare products and is effective in fighting against skincare infections, containing enzymes that are used extensively in anti-ageing skincare formulations. If you are looking

An increasing number of brands are utilising the wonders of fermented ingredients to create effective, barrierboosting skincare products that help to support a healthy skin microbiome. Fresh has a cult product called Black Tea Kombucha Facial Treatment – which can be used post-cleansing in the morning and the evening to ensure a hydrated complexion.Clinique

launched an updated version of their hero product Moisture Surge with fermented aloe vera, which penetrates the skin more easily. Glossier launched Cleanser C o n c e n t r a te w h i c h c o n t a i n s exfoliating grape ferment, along with lactic and malic acid and niacinamide to brighten, smooth and tighten the skin. Zelen’s has launched Tea Shot Urban Defence Serum, which includes fermented black tea (or kombucha) along with another four types of tea for antioxidant protection. Sunday Riley’s has launched Pink Drink Essence, which contains prebiotic fermented honey, green tea, and ceramides to help keep your skin strong and luminous. In case you are not yet sold on fermented ingredients, let me hasten to add that they are not only good for our gut health, and our skincare regime but they also pay benefits to our hair. In China the Yao women have been using fermented rice water on their hair for centuries. It helps increase blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles and is packed with vitamins and amino acids that help to prevent oxidative stress and to boost keratin levels. Having a long day? Perhaps it is time to relax with a cup of green tea, a bowl of sauerkraut, a rice hair mask, and an exfoliating grape cleanser.

Self awareness Why self-awareness is key to business success

By: Ros Jones - Business Coach

30 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

It’s very easy to sail through our days (our lives) unconsciously with little or no awareness about why we do what we do. In business, there’s a danger that we just carry on thinking the same (busy) thoughts and doing the same (busy) things over and over and somehow expect different results. Here are 9 areas where increased selfawareness will help boost business success. Know what drives us It’s important to know what we want from our business and careers and to be clear about why we want that. Some people are driven by a fear of something – they want to move away from something that causes them anxiety – and others are driven by pleasure – they want to move towards something that they will derive satisfaction from. Setting ourselves goals that personally excite and motivate us is key to success in business: they will keep us going when times get hard or when obstacles inevitably challenge our resilience and determination. Be clear on our values We need to have a deep awareness of our values and what we want the culture of our business to feel like and then create that culture. Take ownership It’s often very easy to come up with reasons why things aren’t turning out the way we say we want them to. But that habitual way of thinking only keeps us stuck where we are. A more helpful practice is to take ownership, to become more self-aware

and to ask ourselves what we can do to move forward. Catch yourself blaming outside influences and turn it around to ask yourself how you can change things. Manage mindset Our thoughts turn into the words we say, the actions we take (or don’t take), the way we behave and the decisions we make (or don’t make). Our thoughts direct how we live our

It’s important to have awareness of our habits, useful and not so useful, and whether we need to break them... lives. It’s crucial therefore that we learn to be self-aware of the way we think and the thoughts we allow into our heads. Communication style How you communicate with other people will have a major impact on your success in business. We need to be aware of our personal communication style and the style of those with whom we communicate. It’s important that we learn to “read” other people through their body language, their tone of voice and their personality type in order to adapt our communication style to them. Identify the skills gap To be successful in business we need to be aware of our strengths and also of our skills deficits. There are so many other skills we need to be good at in order to grow a business.

We need to be self-aware enough to know which new skills we need to learn, which skills we know we’re never going to be good at and which skills we need to outsource to an expert or to recruit someone else (better than us) to do it for us. Time management and self-mastery Self-awareness is crucial to understand how we are spending our time. Are we procrastinating, doing anything to avoid doing the things we know deep down we should be doing? Are we being busy urgency fools responding to “urgent” requests and ignoring the important things it would be a better more effective use of our time to be getting on with just because we’re addicted to the feeling of being busy? Review our Habits We go through our days, weeks, months and years doing things habitually. How aware are you of your habits, how much time they take to do and how potentially detrimental they are to you and your business? It’s important to have awareness of our habits, useful and not so useful, and whether we need to break them. Look at Life as a Mirror The journey of learning to get to know ourselves can be fun with lots of light bulb moments of selfrecognition. Remember that life is a mirror. Stuff shows up in our lives to teach us something about ourselves. So why not enjoy looking in the mirror – being consciously aware of what shows up in your life each day – and work out what it’s telling you about you and maybe what needs to be changed in order for you to be your best you and to build your best business. Propaganda launches new age positive consulting Brand and creative consultancy, Propaganda is launching a new consulting arm, Propaganda Agency, helping brands realise the opportunity to differently frame how we see mid-life and the years beyond. Propaganda has appointed brand strategist Claire Lowson to lead the new division.

GenM launched last year and has so far signed up over 50 Partner brands including Co-op, Boots, Royal Mail, M&S and WW (formerly Weight Watchers), each pledging to do more to improve the menopausal experience. Building on its initial success, GenM is now launching a

consulting division to support its brand Partners – connecting them with expert businesses who can help them adapt and shape their menopause offer. Propaganda Agency will work alongside this division, offering brand and marketing consultancy to GenM’s Partners.

Claire will lead the new service. She brings extensive experience in brand strategy for clients including Kimberly Clark, GSK, Aviva and BT. Prior to that she was MD of TW Creative where she ran the RBS and Barclays accounts. She lectures on the Master of Design course at Ravensbourne University and oversaw the brand strategy and rebrand for Leeds Playhouse, formerly West Yorkshire Playhouse, where she is a Trustee. With a recent IPA report showing that less than 5% of marketers aged 51+

are female, Propaganda is committed to addressing the lack of older women in the industry. Through recruitment strategies, new role creation and an active freelance base for seasoned talent, Propaganda is working to address this gap of female understanding, knowledge and talent in marketing. Laura Kynaston, managing director says: “Through our work supporting GenM’s brand proposition and launch, we’ve developed a deep understanding of the mid-life audience. It is clear those experiences demand new and appropriate brand responses. Propaganda Agency will help brands change the way this market is represented in campaigns, product development and internal communications, better serving this audience and driving societal change.” Claire says: “Many forget that the menopause transition (which starts in relative youth) kicks-off the most powerful phase of life yet. From corporate clients retaining senior talent, NPD creating a new market, or external campaigning for aspirational ageing, the societal and commercial benefits are obvious. As marketers, it’s time to colour in the decades beyond 40 and switch out the cult of youth for the cult of powerful ageing.”

Exciting Yorkshire business Yorkshire based Blossom Training & Development has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a brand-new awards programme. The Start-up Awards National Series has been launched to recognise the booming start-up scene across the UK which has accelerated since the pandemic began. In 2020, when most of the world was shutting down, more than 400,000 start-ups were set up in Britain, with similar increases seen in other European countries. There was stiff competition with over 2,500 applications received in response to the Start-up Awards National Series’ first-ever call for entries.

Rachael Allen and Madeleine France, joint managing directors said: “Whe n we started the company six months ago, our aim was to share our unique selfdefence training with 40 students a month, to date we have taught over 750 women and girls in addition to a small number of very brave men. This has far exceeded our expectations. The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive, we feel so proud of what we have created and in addition we are honoured and overjoyed to have won the award”.

Heather Jackson, co-founder of GenM says, “Normalising the conversation around the menopause, and ageing as a whole, is one of the most important things we can do to make a change. Together, GenM and Propaganda will support responsible and forward-thinking brands to play their part. The outstanding work we have delivered with Propaganda over the last year speaks for itself – strategically we couldn’t have asked for a better partner. GenM looks forward to what together we can deliver to drive real change to the change over the next important and impactful years ahead.” Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

Why is self-care essential Author: Nicki Campbell - Life Without Limits Ltd Health & Wellness Coach

to you? Is it your belief system, or have you inherited, adopted it from someone else? Identifying this allows you to ‘choose’ to be different, to decide your own habits, free of judgement (yours or anyone else’s). Learn to accept that ’time out’ is important to both your physical and mental health. Our mind and body needs rest and repair. Have a break from social media, emails, technology, demands, stimulation. It is possible - it’s just something we need to learn.

School holidays are here - for many women this adds the increased pressure of juggling childcare plus work amongst an already busy life. It’s a time when many women pretend to be ok when we really are not. To put on a brave face, keep going, saying yes when we really mean ‘no’, feeling more exhausted mentally and physically. At the se ti me s, whe n w e a re emotionally not coping, we carry on, because physically we can. Our body and mind is programmed to keep going, to do what it takes, to survive. However, they do give us warning signals along the way. Whether those be mental symptoms or physical symptoms, the warnings are there. So how come we struggle so much, as humans in today’s world, to ignore them ...... often until we get a physical or mental / emotional issue that literally stops

34 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

us? An illness, disease or mental breakdown. So what can we do differently? We can choose to develop some new habits, take sometime, and re-asses our thinking.

Create space for you. We often say “if you don’t make time for health, you will soon have to make time for illness”. This space may need to be negotiated, you might need help - that’s ok. Asking for help is a great start. Start a Journal, connect with yourself in a way you never have before. Stop, listen and notice - when you do, you actually find the answers within you. Is self care part of it?

It starts with choosing something different

What steps do you need to put into place?

Become aware of how busy you are. Are you listening to the signals to slow down, or are ignoring them? The first step to any change is awareness, if we don’t know something is happening, we can’t change it.

Who’s support do you need?

Is self care part of it?

What steps do you need to put into place?

Allow yourself time to reflect. Where does the habit or behaviour comes from? Is there is guilt attached to stopping? Where is the influence for this coming from? Does it belong

Who’s support do you need?

Can you allow yourself permission to start now, today, this week?

No-bake summer berry cheesecake Nutritional information Serves 8 Calories per slice (1/8 th of cake) 250 Cals

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all having a wonderful July. The long days and beautiful balmy summer nights are finally here! This month for me, is all about making the most of some wonderful seasonal produce in the shops that include spring veggies, garden herbs and sweet chillies, (if you’re lucky enough to grow them at home) and of course, summer berries. I’m delighted to share two wonderful recipes that incorporate the best of the season. As always, with my recipes, you can adapt them to suit your own palette and lifestyle by choosing vegan or vegetarian substitutes for my tasty ‘sizzling summer chilli con carne’ and my ‘no-bake summer berry cheesecake’. Both recipes are so easy to create from scratch, as well as being economical and they’ll even stretch over a few days if you are all about batch cooking as I am.

I do love cheesecake and this one is just so easy and requires only a few ingredients. It’s relatively inexpensive to make from scratch, not overly sweet and you can adapt the recipe to make it less indulgent by replacing some of the ingredients or omitting refined sugar, replacing it with sweetener or honey. I added lemon to the mix as I love the flavours of a zesty cream cheese. The topping is simply a garnish of fresh summer berries and garden mint, which you can grow at home or pick up at your local supermarket. It certainly wouldn’t feel like summer without an abundance of fresh strawberries and cream whilst watching the tennis Ingredients • • • • •

1 cup / 250 ml double cream 2 x 165g tubs cream cheese (I used Philadelphia light ) 2 tbsp plain yogurt 5 tbsp caster sugar Juice of a whole lemon

Sizzling summer chilli con carne Nutritional information: Serves 8 Calories per serve 650 cals (with the rice) It might be hot outside, but did you know eating hot food can actually serve to keep you cool by lowering your body temperature more than a cold meal! Which is why I love this sizzling chilli con carne, made with beef mince or vegetarian equivalent and lots of flavourful and healthy spices. I added ground turmeric, not just for its earthy flavour and intense orange colour, but also for its healthy properties, as it is a natural anti-inflammatory and has many purported health benefits; I try and add it to all my sauces. A cool garnish balances this gorgeous classic dish and makes it look beautiful. A great one for dinner parties or outdoor gatherings over the summer; definitely one to impress your guests. It’s a crowd pleaser!

Jobs Outlook: Spotlight on Yorkshire An in-depth look at Yorkshire's economic and recruitment activity

“Business confidence has taken a significant hit. A cut in VAT on energy bills to 5%, and other steps to relieve the tax burden on firms to encourage investment are crucial.” Demand for skills

The latest data for Yorkshire & Humber shows a cause for concern with on-going recruitment challenges, rising raw material costs and supply chain disruption being the key factors contributing to the inflation issues which are affecting business confidence and in turn limiting the region’s growth potential

sets. As the skills shortage continues to make an impact, competition for candidates pervades the North with employers offering financial incentives to retain talent, so increasing wage inflation.“ “Employers need to ensure that these increased wage costs are sustainable in the long term to avoid creating problems for themselves further down the line.”

Staff appointments Pay pressures and inflation The data from local recruitment agencies indicates a broad stagnation for permanent placements in June with anecdotal evidence attributing the drop off to widespread skill shortages, even though the demand for candidates is still there. In addition to this, candidates are accepting counteroffers from their current employers rather than taking on new roles. Temporary recruitment appears to be more stable with the data showing a sustained rise in billings during June. Businesses believe this is a less risky option due to the flexibility and ability to adjust workforce with fluctuating demands. Commenting on the latest survey results, Warren Middleton, Manchester office senior partner at KPMG UK, said: “Permanent placements stagnated in June across the North due to a lack of available candidates with the right skill

42 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

There has been increases in salaries for both permanent and temporary appointments as businesses attempt to retain and recruit talented staff. Inflation trends are also a big factor leading businesses offering higher pay rates. The impact of inflation is huge as it increases the cost energy, gas, and other raw materials to its highest level in a decade. This has a knock-on effect across the whole country with the Consumer Price Index hit a 40-year high of 9.1% in May. Commenting on the issue, David Bharler, Head of research at the British Chamber of Commerce, said: “Inflation remains by far and away the top concern as businesses face an unprecedented convergence of cost pressures.”

Similar to our last jobs outlook report, there are skill shortages across all sectors. In the MYCCI Economic report for Q2, the data highlights the manufacturing sector as a key concern. Mark Roberts, Chair of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, commented: “Recruitment has remained challenging, particularly in the manufacturing sector, where vacancies at the UK level have reached their highest levels in 20 years. 77% of manufacturing firms, and 58% of service firms, report having experienced recruitment difficulties within the last three months.” Martin Hathaway, Managing Director of the Mid-Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, also commented: “It is concerning that our manufacturing sales appear to have slowed. Yorkshire, a historically proud manufacturing region, has the tools, skills and ambition to be at the forefront of British and global manufacturing.” “Our region, as well as the nation as a whole, is still experiencing difficulty recruiting. While it is fantastic news for individuals that they have a choice about where they want to work and the careers they pursue, this is often leaving firms with gaps to fill, potentially having to outsource work, increasing the strain on the already stretched purse strings.”

Aagrah celebrates 45 years in business

One of the region’s most renowned Asian restaurants is celebrating 45 years in business. The Aagrah Group opened its first restaurant on Westgate, Shipley, in July 1977. When brothers Sabir, Iqbal and Mohammed Aslam decided they wanted to set up a restaurant to share the delights of Asian cuisine with the people of Bradford, little did they know that 45 years later their multi awardwinning business would still be running some of the most popular eateries in Yorkshire. And to celebrate the milestone anniversary, the business has announced a number of promotions. The celebrations began on Tuesday 5 July (the actual birthday) diners were offered 45% off their bill in restaurants at Chapel

And membership of the restaurant’s Privilege Club will be free of charge during July. Since opening in 1977, the Aagrah Group has won nume rous accolades. With plans to hire three additional recruiters / headhunters by Q4 of this year, Red Diamond will also launch its London office in the immediate future, enabling it to take advantage of the capital’s strong financial sector – recognised by the business as a growth market. Tech, engineering and aviation are other key sectors for Red Diamond over the next five years. But when recruiting in-house, Red Diamond will not go down the traditional route. Emma explained: “We always tell clients that the right person for the job isn’t necessarily someone who has years of sector experience, and so we follow our own advice. Our next headhunters will already be industry experts in the fields we are looking to grow in – and we’ll train them in headhunting. We’re reverse engineering the process.” Red Diamond is also set to launch a graduate training programme, with close links to the University of Huddersfield. Most of Red Diamond’s largest clients cannot be disclosed, but others include Gardner Aerospace, a 1,500 employee and £170m turnover business; Dye and Durham, a 1,500 employee, £600m-turnover software company; Bomag, a construction machinery firm with 2,000+ employees and £700m turnover and OE Electrics, a £25m turnover Yorkshire-based electrical business.

New Pathways into Science

Psychology By : Cat ri ona Morri so n , Dea n of Sci en ce – Ul a w

Science can seem like an intimidating subject – thinking of formulas, test-tubes, experimenters in lab coats. But Science is a whole lot broader than that. It might surprise you to learn that, as well as obvious subjects like Computer Science, Science encompasses subjects as wide as Criminology, Psychology, Policing and Education. At the University of Law we offer all these subjects within the Science School, as well as the opportunity to combine these core subjects with other well-established subjects at the University, like Law and Business. I’m the Dean of Science, and my background is as a psychologist. When I started my studies (a few years ago!) I was surprised and challenged by the fact that the real Psychology I was learning did not exactly fit with my expectations.

What’s your burning question about human behaviour? The list is endless, but some of the things I’ve investigated or taught about are: •

Psychology is mind reading, right? • Wrong! Psychology is a rigorous scientific • subject, examining the realm of human and animal behaviour and appreciating the complexity of the mind and brain. • While in my initial undergraduate studies I was a bit confused about the mismatch between expectations and reality, I soon came to appreciate the skills and knowledge I was acquiring. Having avoided Science at school, I really appreciated the fact that Psychology gave me a route into a fascinating space that I had never imagined I could be part of. I could learn about, use and apply a scientific approach to studying human behaviour.

Inspirational Women:

Kim Kaewkraikhot Thai Leisure Group

54 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

Khoa San Road to Leeds City Centre Kim was born in Kirimart Village, Thailand, where she grew up as part of a large and close-knit family. She didn’t have the easiest of upbringings, she lost her father and brother at a young age and had limited access to education. However, she always had a passion for food. Her first taste of cooking was at home with her mum, and she knew from a young age this was something she wanted to pursue. Kim says: “It was very different growing up in Thailand. Times were tough but I had a big family and we would always work together. We loved to go out fishing and cooked together as a family – I think deep down I always knew I wanted to work with food. We lived in a very poor area where cooking with fresh local ingredients was not only a necessity but an escape.” At the age of 15, Kim left her village for the bustling streets of Bangkok to expand her knowledge of Thai cuisine and where, after setting up her own garment factory, she went on to open her own small Pad Thai cart in 1993. To this day, Kim’s Pad Thai recipe is the most popular dish throughout all Thai Leisure Group sites and one that is close to her heart. A few years later, Kim was working on her infamous cart when a group of Englishmen came to try it out. Her now partner, Martin, was visiting Thailand on holiday when he convinced his friends to try out Kim’s Pad Thai and he fell in love. In 1999, Kim moved to the UK where she started off working as a waitress and kitchen porter then set up a Thai restaurant with her twin sister. This partnership came to an end and in 2004 Martin and Kim

started their journey of making their vision and dream a reality – opening their first restaurant, Chaophraya, in Martin’s hometown, Leeds. After the success of Chaophraya in Leeds, the feedback and passion from guests was overwhelming and spurred Kim on to create a second brand, Thaikhun (pronounced Tycoon). She adds: “We opened multiple Chaophraya restaurants across the country and then saw a gap in the market and had ideas for a more casual dining brand that did not fit with our Chaophraya audience.” It was then that Thaikhun brand was born – a casual, street food style restaurant, which is family friendly, authentic and playful. Being a female business owner in the hospitality industry No matter what gender you identify as, being a business owner in the hospitality industry is a challenge and in recent years, more so than ever before. But Kim has found that by staying true to her values and having a strong team beside her, who are willing to both challenge and support, it is much more manageable. The hospitality industry is heavily dominated by males however it is part of Kim’s mission to invest in and progress females within the business. “There are talented females across every department of our group and by nourishing this talent there is no reason why, alongside passion and hard work, these team members cannot progress to board level.” As well as running the wider Thai Leisure Group business, being part of the kitchen team is also an integral part of Kim’s role.

“Outside of Thai Leisure Group, I sometimes find it challenging to communicate with others in the industry due to the language barrier however I have found communication comes in so many more ways than through speaking. It comes through the skill of showcasing your passion through food and service and that is what I focus on.” Providing a True Sense of Thailand When starting her business, Kim knew she wanted to give diners a true taste of what Thailand has to offer in whichever form this may be. “Our Thaikhun brand is like walking straight onto Khao San Road, we have imported bric-a-brac from market stalls in Bangkok for the truest authentic feel within our ve nues. Whe reas Chaophraya focuses on the finer details, it is more of what we call ‘occasion dining’. “Thaikhun is our authentic, casual street food experience whereas Chaophraya takes a modern and contemporary twist on traditional Thai cuisine. We believe both of our core brands are more than just the food, they’re about an overall experience and feeling.” To recreate her dishes, Kim employs mainly Thai chefs, so not only is she bringing a flavour of Thailand to the UK, she is creating hundreds of jobs nationwide. Thai Leisure Group currently employs 679 members of staff from 39 different nationalities. Kim visits Thailand regularly to see friends and family, as well as to source and bring back innovative Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

and traditional ideas to ensure her position as the leading Thai restaurant group across the country. Both Kim and Martin still love eating from the street food sellers in Bangkok when they visit Thailand. “I try to go back once a year as my mum still lives over there. It’s great to go to all of the street vendors and new restaurants then go home and try out the dishes for my mum. She has the final say after all!” There are now nine Chaophraya restaurants across the country and 20 sites under the Thai Leisure Group umbrella. “Martin and I always had a dream of owning our own restaurant and

we are so lucky that this came true. I still pinch myself now, I can’t believe we have 20 restaurants across the UK. Although Kim is now an extremely

successful businesswoman, she started from scratch, and her success is down to her positive attitude and determination. “Being a good leader in this industry requires an abundance of skills. You need to show attention to detail, be able to multitask, have an excellent understanding of cleanliness and safety/allergens, as well as cooking techniques and culinary expertise. “My advice to anyone trying to make their dream a reality is to follow your heart and trust your instincts. There will always be people who tell you that you can’t win and that ‘it won’t work’ but if you truly believe in your vision, then persevere and you will be glad that you did,” she concluded.

first instance facilitating focus groups and market research to inform the brand strategy. Fliss then used the learnings to develop a complete brand identity and strategy, alongside Tash who worked on creating copy for the newly launched website, created by Kayleigh.

Female creatives help drive region’s sustainability forward A group of female founders have teamed up to help an established operations improvement firm build on the transformational support it has provided to Yorkshire businesses and not-for profits over the last three years. Laura Norman of Chroma Marketing, Fliss Lee of Honest Folk, Kayleigh Nicolaou of Kakadu Creative and Tash Morgan-Etty of Write Rabbit, joined forces to facilitate a rebrand for Yorkshire-based DH Professional Solutions at a time when sustainability is top of mind for many. With each founder already having sustainability at the heart of their brand, it was the perfect group to lead the firm’s transition to becoming the newly named Optimo. Founded in 2019, DH Professional Solutions (now Optimo) exists to maximise the impact of every

organisation with a purpose and mission to make positive change. Headed up by experienced operations, project and change professional Danielle Heward, the firm supports businesses and not-for-profits working for environmental and social change to do what they do more efficiently and effectively. This includes co-designing, planning and implementing operational solutions with people development, process improvement, systems implementation and project and change management. Having been founded just before the pandemic began, the firm’s brand identity hadn’t taken priority and thus, DH Professional Solutions was created as a temporary solution. In June 2022, being already familiar with the work that Laura and Fliss do, founder Danielle approached them with a brief for a complete brand refresh. Laura took the lead on the project in the

Commenting on the process, Laura Norman said: “I’ve been familiar with the amazing work Danielle and the team have been doing over the last few years, so when she approached me regarding the rebrand, I jumped at the chance to get involved. “It was such an exciting project to work on. I knew the first thing we had to do was obtain insight, so we conducted a focus group with a network of clients, associates and people in the sustainability field to understand what they would like to see the company do, how they feel about certain ideas and more. This gave us an abundance of inspiration to take into the design process. “At this point, brand strategist Fliss came in with the creative ideas and thus, Optimo was born.” Danielle Heward, founder of Optimo added: “Having started the business so close to the pandemic, my brand always took a bit of a back seat. I knew it was a challenging time for many organisations and so I wanted to focus entirely on helping those making positive changes to be as efficient and sustainable as possible. “Now, having almost three years under our belt and some brilliant client success stories, I felt it was the right time to focus on leveraging that with a brand refresh.“It’s been well received already, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Yorkshire Children’s charity official launch event to be a royal affair Following its official opening on 1st January 2022, Yorkshire Children’s Charity has announced it will be hosting an exciting and unforgettable celebration at the region’s most prestigious 5-star hotel and spa, Grantley Hall in November. ‘A Night Under the Stars’ will be held on 4th November 2022 - an official launch event for the charity at which Yorkshire Children’s Charity has the privilege of welcoming a Royal Head of State as its honourable guest.

Having already raised over £500,000 in six months to support families and children who are living at a disadvantage, this star-studded event will celebrate an incredible first year, whilst toasting to the future plans of this ambitious regional charity. The Yorkshire Children’s Charity team has a long-standing connection with this particular Royal family, who has passionately supported children at a disadvantage in the Yorkshire region for over 60 years and is delighted that a representative of their family has agreed to attend.

Yo r k s h i r e C h i l d r e n ’ s C h a r i t y launched at the start of 2022 with the aim of doing things differently and work tirelessly to support the

92,000 children in Yorkshire with disabilities, and approximately 352,000 of the region’s children who are currently living in poverty.

Supported by Grantley Hall and Berry’s, the event will be held in a breathtakingly beautiful orangery, supplied by The English Marquee Company and dressed by florist to the stars Fulford Flowers. The full event will be designed and styled by the esteemed Party Architect and legendary Royal party planner, Johnny Roxburgh. Johnny has generously donated his services to deliver a spectacular evening of fun for Yorkshire Children’s Charity’s guests. Featuring a champagne reception, an exceptional four-course banquet designed by Grantley Hall’s Executive Chef, Simon Crannage, a sensational firework display and incredible entertainment including the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra and more well-known surprise guests, its set to be an incredible night to remember.

Party Architect and Royal party planner, Johnny Roxburgh, said “This year celebrates one year of Yorkshire Children’s Charity and I’m thrilled to be taking the lead on planning such a special occasion. The event will welcome famous faces and even Royalty at arguably the most prestigious venue in the region – Grantley Hall. Guests can expect immaculate décor, service and entertainment - it’s going to be a fantastic night which really will change children’s lives in Yorkshire.” Charlotte Farrington, CEO at Yorkshire Children’s Charity said: ‘We have had an incredible start to the year since our launch in January and I have been blown away by the support from individuals and businesses across Yorkshire. This event is going to be extremely special, and we are incredibly honoured that a Royal Head of State has agreed to attend – it’s such a generous act of kindness. However, despite all the excitement for what is set to be a spectacular event, above all we are there to raise vital funds for the children in Yorkshire who need our help. In just the first six months since our launch we have already been able to make a tangible difference to Yorkshire’s most vulnerable children, and fundraising events such as this one will allow us to elevate that important work. Whilst this event presents the opportunity to showcase Yorkshire at its finest, I assure you that we never lose sight of the responsibility we are entrusted with to raise significant funds for the children and young people who depend on us.” Tickets for ‘A Night Under the Stars’ are priced at £10,000 for a table of ten sold by invitation only. The hidden jewel of the Yorkshire Dales

Nestling on the banks of the River Skell on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and encased in beautiful woodland, you will find the spectacular Grantley Hall Hotel, a Grade 11 mansion built in the 17th century. A short drive from the market town of Ripon with its beautiful cathedral, the area also boasts lots to do with both Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal on the doorstep.

The original part of the hall was built by Thomas Norton during the reign of Queen Anne, to celebrate a family wedding. The original building faced south towards the river and was accessed via the main entrance, which today leads to the Norton Courtyard remaining almost completely intact. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries the hall continued to be owned by the Norton family, who continued to extend the original building before the hall changed hands in 1900. With the outbreak of World War 11 the then owner Sir William Aykroyd offered Grantley Hall as a convalescent home for American, Jamaican and Canadian airmen and soldiers. The hall remained as a convalescent home until 1946 and with the death of Sir William and Lady Aykroyd in 1947 the era of a privately owned Grantley Hall ended when it was sold to West Riding County Council, where for the next 50 years would be used as an adult education residential college.

In 2015 Valeria Sykes and her family purchased Grantley Hall with plans to turn it into a leading luxury hotel in the UK. Costing £70m and taking four years to renovate, Yorkshire Businesswoman editor Gill Laidler and colleague Lisa Darwin who spent 24 hours there recently can confirm that Valeria most definitely succeeded. The hotel and spa opened in 2019 to rave reviews. This was only my second visit to Grantley Hall, but the impressive welcome was just the same. I was greeted at the gate by the smartly dressed gatekeeper who welcomed me to the estate and directed me to the front of the hotel, following the gravel driveway along the edge of the river to the front of the impressive building where I was greeted by a porter

and valet driver who took away my car and bags, informing me that my room was waiting for me. A swift check in followed and as the weather was beautiful, I opted to wait on the pretty courtyard terrace for Lisa to arrive.

arrived offering water and I opted for a glass of crisp rose wine, Chateau Terrabonne, Cotes de Provence from France, whilst I waited. Lisa arrived 20 minutes later and had enjoyed the same welcome experience as I had.

Lisa and I stayed at the hotel as we wanted to check out all the facilities they offer as we have arranged to hold a Yorkshire Businesswoman networking event, fashion show and afternoon tea there in September which is already sold out and Lisa will hold a glamourous Summer Charity Fashion Gala with them on 7th July 2023, with a Fashion Preview Party on 10th December 2022 to launch Glamour Rocks.

We decided to order lunch which we ate whilst catching up about the forthcoming Yorkshire Businesswoman event, a buttermilk chicken burger served with fries and a side salad, which was served promptly and was delicious.

Comfortably seated, my waiter quickly

Time to check out our room, one of 47 rooms and suites split across the old house and new wing, which they had kindly converted into a twin for us. On a previous visit we had viewed some of the beautiful suites that are situated on the top floor, with emperor sized beds, dining areas and full lounge. Wandering back to reception we headed through the Norton Bar, named in honour of the hall’s original owner, which boasts a roaring fire, not lit on our visit, low ceilings, dim lighting and wingback armchairs, perfect for a cosy winter evening. The large reception hall is tastefully decorated with all the charm of a country home where we collected our keys and headed to our room on the first floor. Passing through several rooms, each decorated differently but all so elegant with bold block furnishings and eclectic collections of art covering the walls with orchids and tropical greenery. Others were traditional and oak panelled. We passed the award-winning spa (more of that later) and headed in the lift to the first floor, or you could opt for the stairs that wrap around a glittering contemporary chandelier, where we were astonished to find another completely different space an atrium with olive trees and marble statuary, it is absolute theatre. Our room was located in the corner of this wonderful space. Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

Our room was different again, elegant with a real country house feel, painted in creams and subtle golds with a beautiful vaulted ceiling. Paintings adorn the walls and even the giant TV hides behind one of them and is revealed at the touch of a button and includes Sky so guests can enjoy movies and sport. Wooden shelving is stacked with books and Yorkshire guides, making the room feel very homely. As you would expect, complimentary tea and coffee are included but unexpected was the complimentary bottle of fizz, bottle of damson gin, fruit and Lauden chocolates. The mini fridge was filled with water, soft drinks and milk and all complimentary. Inspecting the room we found white fluffy robes in the wardrobe with slippers but were impressed with the addition of coats boasting Grantley Hall logos that guests can use if the weather is inclement whilst exploring the beautiful grounds, checking out the vegetable patch or viewing the pretty Japanese

drawing room or dine in the The Orchard, which will host our event in September.

In the under-floor heated bathroom, we were delighted to find a large double walk in shower and a huge bath, very rare to have both in a hotel room. The room was large and elegant with marble fittings and all the complimentary toiletries you would expect from a quality hotel.

Eighty-Eight is situated across the driveway in a modern building that also hosts the champagne and cocktail bar. This is where those coats would come in useful or the abundance of umbrella’s available by the main reception door, but it was a beautiful balmy evening, so we were able to wander across, taking in the breathtaking gardens along the way.

Although we could have stayed to relax in this fabulous space, we were booked for dinner. Grantley has an amazing choice when it comes to dining there are four restaurants and three bars, including one Michelin star fine dining restaurant Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall. We were booked into the Asian inspired EightyEight alongside Champagne and cocktail bar Valeria’s named after the owner. Guests can also enjoy refreshments elsewhere in the hotel, afternoon tea in the

Welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff, we were soon seated in a cosy booth and offered both the food and wine menu. We ordered a bottle of Le Fief de la Brie, a Muscadet from France which was crisp and delicious as well as reasonably priced at £38. The restaurant serves a selection of small and large plates as well

as lots of sides, so dishes can be mixed and matched. To start, we settled on Thirkleby Duck Pancakes for two, confit of duck leg served with cucumber and hoisin. Portion were large and equally delicious. Service was quick and as you would expect, our waitress was ve ry knowledgeable about all the dishes on offer as we challenged her. For the main course, I chose 2 small plates of Teriyaki glazed salmon served with Umeboshi plum, sea lettuce and radish and aromatic chicken tea, herb fed chicken, enoki and lemongrass. Lisa opted for one large plate of dry aged Yorkshire Beef fillet and soy braised short rib with black bean, smoked leek and wild garlic. To accompany, we shared a bowl of XO fried rice and a portion of Kombu roasted new potatoes. Two tasting menus are also available, one vegan, 8 courses for £70 per person and for £50 you can add on six carefully chosen paired drinks. Plates cleared and it was time for dessert. Lisa chose the Mango Cheesecake, cream cheese, mango confit on matcha biscuit. For me I chose ice cream, three scoops one each of dark chocolate, Madagascan vanilla and malted milk crunch. The perfect way to round off a simply delicious meal.

available to purchase on departure, sporting the Grantley monogram as most things do across the hotel including the water bottles. Waking refreshed, it was time to head to Fletchers restaurant for breakfast a smartly decorated room in creams and red with double aspect windows looking out across the pretty gardens. We booked an early start, but it was already busy with other guests. As with most hotels, there is a large selection on offer from buffet continental with fruit, pastries and cereal, to full English. Served with fresh tea and coffee as well as orange juice, Lisa ordered the full English minus the black pudding and I asked for bacon, sausage, beans and toast, not on the menu but no

Grantley Hall is one of the most luxurious places I have stayed. The attention to detail is incredible, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble...

Sadly, it was time for me to leave as I had meetings, so we headed to reception for a smooth check-out with the porter taking our bags to the car. However, as Lisa was to enjoy more of a leisurely morning, she was lucky enough to head to the Three

Graces Spa to finish off her stay. The stunning purpose-built spa is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Likened to a Roman Spa there are pillars, sandstone floors, marble statues and tropical plants. There is a large marblelined pool perfect for swimming while a separate vitality pool has bubble and massage seats with powerful jets to soothe aching muscles. There is a sliding glass door where swimmers can head outside into a steaming outdoor pool or relax in a sunken hot tub. The changing facilities are on another level, with pool slippers and white towel robes inside your locker. The fluffy white towels and array of Malton Brown toiletries make for a real treat. The Spa is tranquil, giving a feeling of holiday and relaxation, other guests are friendly and have wonderful things to say about their stay. Lisa took advantage of the sauna, steam room and outdoor jacuzzi, alongside enjoying a leisurely swim inside and out and relaxed before she managed to tear herself away and back to reality. The verdict? I think this review speaks for itself. Grantley Hall is one of the most luxurious places I have stayed. The attention to detail is incredible, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. Everyone should experience Grantley Hall at some point. We are lucky enough to be returning again on 16 September when Grantley Hall will play host to a special Yorkshire Businesswoman event. Fifty lucky ladies will join us for sell-out afternoon tea and a special fashion show, choreographed and styled by Lisa, who for the last 25 years has organised FB Fashion Ball in Leeds and who will return to Grantley next year for another special fashion event. We will be joined in September by some of our amazing partners from Lexus Leeds, Philip Stoner Jewellers, John Lewis, Charlotte Tilbury and more, as well as the fabulous celebrity hairstylist Andrew Barton who will be helping out with model’s hair. months, the limited space couldn’t hold enough stock for the demand, and she knew that it was time to broaden her horizons. Within four years, Georgina had gone from having one small store in Barnsley, to having five stores in different locations, one of those being in the prestigious Redbrick Mill.

Gut instinct led one Yorkshire interior expert to her dream career F ro m w o rk i n g i n t h e construction industry to launching an interiors brand at one of the most prestigious showrooms in the north, interior expert Georgina Ward, seems to have done it all. With such a thriving brand to her name, most would rightly assume that interior was something Georgina had pursued her entire life. But her career path has been quite the opposite. Aged 25, Georgina found her hectic schedule to become a little too much so decided she needed a project that would help her unwind and free herself from the stress.

else going on so to free myself from these thoughts, I knew I needed something else to concentrate on. It was a huge task but for me it was a sort of escapism.” Interior design had always been an interest of Georgina’s, but never did she think that she could turn her passion into a career. But, after witnessing two fatal crashes on the motorway in the space of a few days, Georgina, who was at the time driving 2000 miles each week up and down the country as a regional sales manager in construction, decided to pack it all in and pursue her passion.

For most people, winding down often includes taking up a new exercise, or reading their favourite book. For Georgina, this meant renovating her entire home.

She said, “I had no experience at all. But I was really good at it and most importantly, I enjoyed it. I think that when you’re really passionate about something, you’ll commit everything to making it work.”

She said, “My brain was already working overtime on everything

21 years of successful business later and Ice Interiors, which is now solely located at Redbrick Mill, has built upon an impressively loyal customer base to whom they sell furniture of all shapes and sizes as well as artwork and home accessories. Georgina recalls working with entire generations of families on the renovation of their homes. She said, “People often think that working in interiors, you wouldn’t have regular customers because once someone finishes their renovation, why would they need to come back for 10 or 15 years. But one of the best parts of my job is seeing the same people return time and time again as they look to switch up their space.” She continued “In fact, I’ve even had experiences where children that once came in with their parents have since grown up, bought a house of their own and returned, this time to shop for their own furniture. St George’s RC Primary School & Nursery, a school for children aged 3-11, is located near Henry Boot’s Cocoa Works construction site, which is seeing the historic Rowntree Factory transformed into 279 characterful apartments. The school’s Garden of Remembrance had become wildly overgrown, with overhanging branches making the garden unsuitable for the children to use.

The construction company provided all the required tools and equipment needed to help revitalise the once cherished green space, and ensured that all the volunteers, including children and teachers, looked the part and could work in a safe way. They also provided compost, bark, a well-deserved lunch for everyone, and a range of beautiful new plants to decorate the reclaimed space. Henry Boot Construction was joined on the day by volunteers from Framedeck,

IHE Demolition, Benchmark and Clarion Housing Group. The volunteers, armed with their tools and a jet wash from Banner Plant, spent a fulfilling day cutting back shrubbery and stray tree limbs. Dee Statham, headteacher of the school & nursery, said: “The team have completely transformed the Garden of Remembrance and it is now well used at lunchtimes by the children. It’s made a huge difference and the children love having a quiet place to just sit and think. It was a brilliant day and we can’t thank the team and volunteers enough.” Andy Greaves, senior project Manager, from Henry Boot Construction, said: “We’re hugely committed to giving back to the communities in which we operate, and this local school project was a really rewarding one for our volunteers. Green space is really important in big cities and every child should have access to an attractive and welcoming quiet space where they can reflect and relax during their day.”Steven Graham, Community liaison manager at Clarion Housing Group, said: ”We really enjoyed getting stuck in alongside Henry Boot, supply chain volunteers and everyone from the school to make this project happen.” Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

Topping out for Sheffield’s first zero carbon ready office

Elshaw House, Sheffield’s first zero carbon ready off ice, celebrated an important construction milestone this week with the building reaching its peak height. A key part of Heart of the City – the transformative city centre development programme being led by Sheffield City Council and their Strategic Development Partner, Queensberry, Elshaw House is situated between Wellington Street, Carver Street and Backfields. The office’s striking industrialstyled metal frame, which has now reached its highest point, will incorporate approximately 70,000 sq ft of innovative, flexible and comfortable workspace over

seven floors. The ground floor will house new retail and food and beverage units.

Sheffield City Council welcomed key representatives from Queensberry, Henry Boot Construction, Turner & Townsend and more to celebrate Heart of the City’s latest milestone.

72 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

Decarbonisation of the grid will ultimately make the building, which is designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, an operationally carbon zero workspace. The fully electrified building drastically reduces operational energy through mixed mode ventilation, coupled with innovative cooling embedded in the fabric of the building and the latest in heat pump technology. Thanks to the reuse of existing materials, lean design and low carbon choices, the structure also has 40% lower embodied carbon than average. This pioneering development for Sheffield is targeting NABERS 5*, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and RIBA

2030 accreditation, which would place Elshaw House in the top one percent of all new UK office buildings in terms of quality and long-term sustainability. To celebrate Heart of the City’s latest milestone, Sheffield City Council welcomed key representatives from Queensberry, Henry Boot Construction and Turner & Townsend for a tour of the site, along with an official topping-out ceremony. Kate Martin, executive director, City Futures at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great to see the progress being made on Elshaw House. Heart of the City is committed to a green and sustainable future. This will the most sustainable office in Sheffield and will continue to grow the new business district at the heart of our city centre. The

Council’s ambition is for Sheffield to become carbon neutral by 2030 and developments like this are essential to us meeting those targets.”

2050 standards. It sets the bar for new offices in Sheffield – delivering a blueprint for more sustainable, innovative and flexible workspaces.”

Andrew Davison, project director at Queensberry, commented: “We are looking forward to seeing Elshaw House complete next year. The building is already years ahead of current practice, with predicted performance close to expected 2035-

Richard Jackson, principal engineer for Arup, said: “I am really proud of what is being achieved with Elshaw House, using cutting edge building design techniques to create a building that is highly energy efficient and future ready whilst creating spaces

that are modern, flexible and controlled by the people that use them.” The game changing office space, which will be ready for occupation in Spring 2023, is set to hit the market in the coming weeks and the project team are confident of attracting leading organisations who are committed to a sustainable future in the heart of Sheffield. New artwork is picture perfect addition to city centre greenspace A new collection of artwork is adding a thought-provoking and visually-vibrant extra dimension to a popular piece of green space in Leeds city centre. Leeds City Council commissioned local artist Melody Sutherland earlier this year to create a series of interactive art installations in Merrion Gardens. She was tasked with using her talents to shine a light on the stories of people of marginalised genders – including young women and girls – from Leeds. And Melody has done exactly that,

74 Y o r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s W o m a n

working in conjunction with her mum, Nicola, who is herself an artist, to produce a pair of colourful large-scale murals on the gatehouse-type building that runs along the northern edge of the gardens. Benches and bins around the site – located between Merrion Street and New Briggate, next to St John’s Church – have also been given eye-catching paint-jobs.

As part of her work on the project, Melody interviewed 10 people of marginalised genders aged from 10 to 26 about their lives, their hopes for the future and their views on the wider world. The faces of two of her interviewees feature on the gatehouse murals, while metre-square portraits of the other eight will shortly be going up on the site’s perimeter railings. An information board is also being installed that will display a QR code

The artwork scheme received funding from the Government’s Welcome Back Fund, which was itself supported by the EU’s European Regional Development Fund. The Welcome Back Fund was designed to assist councils across England with the safe post-pandemic reopening of their local economies by making town and city centres as welcoming and friendly as possible for visitors, residents and businesses alike. The ongoing improvements in and around Merrion Gardens and New Briggate form part of a wider councilled transformation of the city centre, with other high-quality pieces of public realm having been created at locations such as the Corn Exchange and Cookridge Street.

Melody’s artwork was officially unveiled to the public at a free launch event in Merrion Gardens on July 30. Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, culture and education, said: “We want to make sure that spaces like Merrion Gardens are appealing and attractive to everyone in Leeds, and this project is a great example of how we are achieving that. “The new artwork looks tremendous, it adds a real splash of colour to a much-loved spot in the city centre. Just as important, though, is the message it sends out – that our city is a place where people of all Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n

Working through chemo wins industry award for travel expert

Chemotherapy is a living Hell for so many cancer sufferers – a debilitating, all-consuming and draining form of treatment – yet travel expert Rachael Coyne from Huddersfield has not only managed to work through it, generating hundreds of thousands of pounds in sales, she has also won a coveted industry award. Rachael, who set up her own travel consultancy through The Travel Franchise, owns and runs Jetset Not Just Travel with her husband Colman. She has won a Great British Franchisee Award from whichfranchise.com the highest honour in the franchising world. Not only did Rachael continue to work while undergoing the most gruelling chemotherapy for three days a week, but she also managed to do £400,000 of business in just the first six weeks of this year. Rachael was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in eight years in autumn 2021. Having again gone through gruelling chemotherapy, sadly, this time the cancer was found to be stage four, which means that while it is controllable, it is not curable. The treatment has been successful

and has shrunk the tumours. Rachael will remain under surveillance from her specialist for the next three years, with injections every three weeks to maintain control of the cancer. “Rachael and Colman are a walking, talking example of resilience and success,” says Paul Harrison, cofounder of The Travel Franchise and Not Just Travel. The couple began by running international trips for a social club before turning professional nine years ago and have developed Jetset NJT into a business with a £2 million turnover. Cancer apart, their resilience was put to the test during the pandemic, not least when a £125,000 business trip to South Africa had to be postponed three times.

“We worked tirelessly during Covid to fight for refunds and never stopped fighting for our customers,” says Rachael, “for us, this award and our success shows that The Travel Franchise’s product offer and business model works. There’s no way we could have built our company from scratch if we hadn’t bought a franchise. We have grown our business on our terms, at our pace, and now have a brilliant lifestyle. We absolutely love what we do and feel very lucky to have met the co-founders Paul and Steve all those years ago.” Unusually in the travel world, Rachael and Colman offer 24/7 customer service, giving their customers their personal mobile numbers and even calling them back on a Sunday night if they have a query. The Travel Franchise is one of the UK’s fastest growing travel agency businesses, with demand for the franchise soaring despite the pandemic. The Travel Franchise enables people to operate their own travel agent business from home without the risk of going it alone, and unlike many of its competitors, franchisees do not need any travel agent experience or qualifications to join. Franchises range between just £2,995+VAT to £49,995+VAT depending on the chosen package. In addition, if franchisees hit certain milestones, they can have their franchise fee refunded in full. This can be achieved in as little as 10 bookings. The £2,995 Lite Package was initially introduced during Covid as a more affordable option, but it has proven so popular that the company has decided to continue it. The Challenge Ashleigh had already secured premises and a fully functioning workshop, with a product range of 13 different pieces and 3 different arrangements of set pieces. Her objectives when joining Start-Up West Yorkshire were to enhance her business, improve business knowledge, build confidence and make new connections. I felt a bit lost and unsure of what my next steps were, I needed support to build my confidence and knowledge in business and to figure out how to connect with people in order to generate leads. Celebrating You I’m delighted to be joining you with this column, which will be focused on the power of PR and why Celebrating YOU is important. Too many incredible business owners stay hidden away, scared to get visible, and in doing so deny those who need their services.… For starters let’s consider the benefits of Celebrating You via PR by you sharing your story or knowledge in the press. Sharing an inspiring or motivating story offers hope to others who are where you were. It illustrates success and attracts attention, gains credibility and visibility It impresses your community who become more primed to buy. It helps you connect more closely around your mission and creates pride around being recognised.

Why you should be celebrating you Welcome to the new PR column from member Jo Swann. Jo is the founder of Chocolate PR, an award-winning PR agency she established over 15 years ago, after working in journalism, media , marketing and PR agencies. She’s supported brands such as Whistles, NSPCC, Yo! Sushi, Dale Carnegie winning many awards along the way, however she believes PR is

not just the big boys and her focus now is on championing entrepreneurs helping them to gain credibility and visibility in national media. Facing imposter syndrome head on she works with clients to create confidence in their message, helping them to craft their story in a way that makes them a media magnet. Here in her first column, Jo talks about why you should be Celebrating you!

It shows your ideal clients you have what they need - be it a product or service. It helps people connect with you on a values basis, so you are more likely to magnetise your dream clients. Often PR can be seen as scary or egocentric - it needn’t be either of those things when you focus on it from a point of view of celebration and giving back to those who need to hear what you’ve got to pass on from your knowledge or experiences. www.chocolatepr.co.uk www. instagram.com/jochocpr Podcast: https://podfollow.com/prpowerhouse

It all started with The Enveloper - a bespoke envelope maker she designed at the age of 21 while at university, which became an instant hit with the crafting crowd. This soon evolved into Sara’s current Crafting Companion business, which sells all types of creative materials and boasts an average turnover of £34million! Sunny 7up is perfect By: Graham Courtney - Motoring Correspondent

One of the worst injuries I’ve ever sustained was a broken wrist. I’m not sure which was more painful, the injury itself or the mocking I received when revealing how I broke it. I fell off a skateboard. I was 46. I need to grow up. H o w e v e r, s o m e t h i n g t h a t i s maturing nicely with age is the MINI. It recently celebrated its 21st birthday by being given a refresh. Oh and before anyone points out that the original Mini is a darn site older…it was launched in 1959… we’re talking about the BMW owned MINI here.

Inside, there’s an updated infotainment system which now features an 8.8-inch display and new switchgear. You can use a rotary dial situated between the front seats to operate the system. It’s simple and intuitive to use. The infotainment graphics have been updated and look stunning.

The good news is that driving the current MINI is like its predecessor… it’s still like riding a skateboard.

The steering wheel is new and feels lovely…it’s chunky…and there’s an option to have it heated.

And lowering the hood in the MINI Convertible (it takes only 18 seconds) merely adds to the fantastic fun.

Out on the road in the Cooper S Convertible, the ride has been much improved thanks to new suspension dampers. Okay there’s a bit of flexing caused by the missing tin roof, but it’s not a problem.

The Cooper S version is still the one to go for if you want grin-a-minute motoring. It’s a hoot to drive. There are three levels of trim…Classic, Exclusive and Resolute…but all come well equipped. There’s a new-look grille and a wider and lower front bumper which certainly gives the car a purposeful stance. Side vents allow air to flow onto the brakes to keep them cool. The rear of the Cooper S gets a wide diffuser which surrounds the twin exhaust pipes. There are new alloy wheels and a new range of colours. We think Zesty Yellow looks fab.

Under the bonnet there’s a tried and tested 2.0 litre 176bhp petrol engine. In the right conditions you can complete the 0-60mph dash in 6.7 seconds and go on to 146mph. Go easily and MINI reckon you can average 46.3mpg. Emissions are a low 139/km.

up the price considerably by dipping into the extensive options list. Want some stripes on the bonnet? That’ll be £150 please.

Prices for the latest MINI 3 door Cooper S Convertible start at £29,040. You get all of the essentials like air con, decent audio system, electric windows and a stack of safety kit, but it’s very easy to bump-

Things aren’t all plain sailing. The MINI in 3-door guise is still tight for anyone sat in the back. Adults find it decidedly cramped. Boot space is limited. However, most folk will see this car as a one or two person

mode of transport and will probably chuck stuff onto the back seats. But, if you want a car that provides serious driver thrills added to some wind in the hair, flies in the teeth fun, then the MINI Cooper S Convertible fits the bill. Build quality is outstanding. We think it looks great too. It’s maturing with age…..unlike some of us. Yo r k s h i r e B u s i n e s s Wo m a n
