Dear Members,

L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T

What an exciting season it has been for the Black Hills Home Builders Association! I am incredibly proud to reflect on the success of our recent Home Show, which was not only our largest in history, but also one of the most impactful It was inspiring to see so many of you members, volunteers, and supporters come together to make this event shine A heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy to make it such a tremendous success We were especially honored to welcome NAHB Chairman Buddy Hughes to the event His visit was a major highlight, and his remarks about the Five Pillars of Membership truly resonated with our group Buddy reinforced what many of us already know that NAHB is a powerhouse for advocacy, working tirelessly to protect and promote the housing industry at every level

One key way they do this is through Build PAC, which supports political candidates who champion housing initiatives and consistently score high on issues important to our industry. We’re proud to share that through the efforts of our association and the generosity of our members, we held a successful fundraiser and raised over $16,000 to support National Build PAC. Thank you for your commitment and support in helping us make such a meaningful contribution!

In addition to our policy impact, we continue to see exciting growth within our association. We are welcoming new members, expanding our outreach, and strengthening our voice in the industry None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff Their efforts behind the scenes are the driving force behind our success, and I want to extend a sincere thank you for all that they do Your passion and professionalism do not go unnoticed

As we look ahead, there is a lot to be excited about With your continued support, we’re building a stronger future not only for the Black Hills Home Builders Association, but for our entire industry

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Quick Tip for the entrepreneur

EOS (the Entrepreneurial Operating System) is a simple, proven business operating system that can help your entrepreneurial organization clarify and achieve its vision. It is a new way to look at your business – through the lens of the Six Key Components of the EOS Model for any business in any industry that must be managed and strengthened to be a great business. As we ramp up for another busy construction season. How is your To-Do list shaping up? This may surprise you but every bit as important as your To-Do list is your Stop-Doing list.

One of the tools of EOS is Rocks or the 90-Day World. What are those things that you need to accomplish in the next 90 days to have the most successful season and year ever? In the picture here, Rocks are those things that need to be accomplished first, we put those things (Rocks) in first and then fill in the less important items in the space left, the pebbles and sand.

Now, the tougher question … what are the things over the next 90 days that you need to stop doing?

WAIT WHAT? DON’T I HAVE TO DO IT ALL?

This question is one of prioritization and focus on your best talents and what you most love to do. Remember that as you and your company grow part of your Stop-Doing list might be items on your To-Do list that could go to a trusted person in your company to carry out. Having handed those off now you can focus on the bigger money makers for you and your company. Let me share a secret with you, those trusted folks in your company are waiting, can I say WANTING you to delegate those other tasks to them. In EOS we refer to this as Delegate and Elevate and here is to a fantastic season!

SPRING LAWN CARE TIPS SPRING LAWN CARE TIPS

Build a greener, healthier lawn with these essential spring lawn care tips from Professional Choice Lawn & Landscape.

Clean-Up:

Remove winter debris like leaves, sticks, and other winter debris to prepare for the lawn for growth. Give it a first mow at 2–2.5" to kickstart growth.

Aeration:

Aerating loosens compacted soil which allows for better water and nutrient absorption.

Overseeding:

Great for bare spots or improving overall lawn health. Best results come from overseeding 2+ seasons in a row.

Fertilizing:

Start with a soil test to know what your lawn needs. We offer custom soil testing with our Propeat Fertilizer. Fertilize 3–4 times a year (every 6–8 weeks): Early Spring, Late Spring, Summer (use lower nitrogen), and Fall.

Weed Control:

Pre-emergent: Stops weed seeds early (apply in spring).

Post-emergent: Spot-spray weeds as they show up.

A thick, healthy lawn is your best defense.

Sprinkler System:

Inspect and repair. Adjust sprinkler heads and timer regularly to match the weather.

Mower Maintenance:

Sharpen blades, check height. Cut to 3" in summer, shorter in spring and fall.

Mowing Tips:

Begin in mid-spring. Don’t cut more than 1/3 of the height at a time. Leave grass clippings, because they are 90% water and release moisture and nutrients back into the soil.

Disease & Pests

Watch for and address any trouble spots, or areas with appropriate treatment. When in doubt, call a lawn care pro. We’re happy to help at Professional Choice Lawn & Landscape.

Attending IBS 2025 was an unforgettable and incredibly valuable experience. I had the chance to connect with NAHB leadership, BHHBA members, and clients from South Dakota while diving into the latest industry trends and policies. It was a great mix of learning, networking, and fun!

At the Area 10 Caucus Meeting, I was excited to hear about an upcoming Leadership Training Conference in Iowa—an amazing opportunity for anyone wanting to grow within our local and national associations. Even more exciting, BHHBA was recognized as the #1 association for membership growth in Area 10—what an honor to see our local efforts gaining regional and national attention!

A major highlight for me was hearing from newly appointed HUD Secretary Scott Turner. He spoke about the housing crisis, homelessness, and the new administration’s focus on cutting wasteful spending—huge issues that directly impact our industry.

Throughout the week, I explored the IBS and KBIS show floors (it was packed!) and spent time at the Cambria booth with BHHBA members and clients, showcasing our newest designs. National hosted fantastic events— the House Party was a blast, and the Chris Jansen concert was phenomenal. As a Spike, I loved the VIP experience—being so close to the stage made it extra special!

Key Takeaways:

Strengthened relationships with clients and BHHBA members at the Cambria booth

Gained insight into design trends: greens, reds, and metallics like brass, gold, and silver

Expanded my network and engaged with industry leaders

Learned about national housing policy and advocacy initiatives

Huge thanks to NAHB for putting on such a well-run, high-energy show. It was an inspiring week that I’ll never forget!
