We dedicate the 79th season to Dr. Reuben Bareis, former board member and long-time supporter of the Black Hills Playhouse, and Chef Brian Ortiz, who left us much too soon.

A LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

“History walks here, love is lived here, loss is met and wept for and understood and survived here and not for the first time but every time.”

– The Book of Will Lauren Gunderson

Welcome to the 79th season of The Black Hills Playhouse—a place where mystery stews, hearts belt their truths, and the written word comes alive with unexpected fire.

This year, we hop aboard a most theatrical locomotive in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, where every passenger has secrets—and possibly a dagger. If ever there was a stage more perfectly set for drama, suspense, and impeccably timed exits, it is the snowbound railcar of Christie’s classic whodunit.

But fear not, it’s not all murders and mustaches! We’ll bend and snap into musicals where justice is pink, pies are powerful, and playwrights scramble to preserve the Bard himself (The Book of Will, we’re looking at you—don’t lose the folios!).

The Black Hills continue to echo with laughter, gasps, and the thunder of applause thanks to you, our audience—our fellow players in this grand act. Whether you’ve been with us for all 79 seasons or just stepped onto our stage this year, your presence keeps the curtain rising and the lights glowing.

So take your seat, silence your cell phones, and prepare for a season where the only thing more dramatic than the plots is the sheer joy of live theater.

Dramatically yours, Dan Workman

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

As we welcome another season of storytelling, I’m reminded that no matter how the world changes, there’s magic in gathering to share a story.

For over seven decades, the Black Hills Playhouse has brought people together in the heart of Custer State Park. From wooden benches in a tent near Legion Lake to today’s beloved theatre, it’s always been about more than performances — it’s about people and this special place. In 2024, over 24,000 people experienced Playhouse programs through summer productions in the Park, BHP Jr. Camps, Dakota Players Tours, and the Expanding Stage, where people with disabilities took the spotlight.

This year marks a time of dynamic growth and creativity for the Black Hills Playhouse. We’re working with Arc International to design a Master Plan for our campus. At the same time, our education programs have moved into a new home in Sioux Falls, and our admin/development team has settled into Rapid City’s Main Street Square. The Playhouse family now includes nine year-round employees (4 in Rapid City, 5 in Sioux Falls), 70 seasonal artists and technicians, and an annual budget nearing two million dollars. This growth could not have happened without the extraordinary support we enjoy from our community.

Your continued support will be essential to keep us strong, as $110,000 of our budget traditionally comes from federal sources to support Theatre in the Park, our statewide work in low-income and rural communities, and theatre for people with disabilities. We don’t know if, when, or how these funding priorities will sort out. Please consider a gift to help our vital work continue.

Thank you for your belief in the magic of live theatre. Next year, we will celebrate the 80th Season of the Black Hills Playhouse! Whether you’ve been with us for years or are visiting for the first time, you’re part of a story 79 years strong and still going. Thanks for being a part of the magic of the Playhouse and our story.

Warmly, Linda

The organization has since grown into a pillar of the arts in the state; together, the USD College of Fine Arts and the Black Hills Playhouse deliver enriching fine arts experiences and educational opportunities that establish South Dakota as a destination and home for artists.

A LETTER FROM THE

BOARD PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Black Hills Playhouse and today’s performance in beautiful Custer State Park. On behalf of the BHP board of directors, I want to thank you for joining us as we celebrate our seventy-ninth season of producing theatre in the Hills. Whether your journey to the BHP today is your first visit or one of many you have made over the years, please know that we appreciate your presence and support.

As a member of the BHP board, I’d like to share a glimpse of our role in the BHP’s activities. You can see in the board members’ descriptions in the playbill that we represent a wide range of occupations, skills, and connections to different areas of the state and region. Working as a whole and on various committees, we address governance issues, monitor finances, and help with directional planning.

Betsy Groves Lamont Enterprises, Whitewood Partnership Rapid City, SD Treasurer

Currently, staff and the Education Committee are developing a strategic plan for BHP’s education programs. The Physical Plant Committee and staff will soon evaluate the results of a comprehensive assessment report on the status of all buildings on campus. This report will help us plan for potential improvements to buildings and grounds, as well as fundraising for the same.

A current challenge we face is adapting to cuts in federal funding. Donors, state, and federal grants have traditionally supported the Playhouse in Custer State Park so ticket prices stay accessible for families. Remote rural communities, for instance, use grants to help bring Dakota Players for workshops and arts education in their schools. This support may be discontinued. The same could be true of our partnership with LifeScape and DakotAbilities, which is only possible through grants. Together, our organizations provide opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in creative activities, which boost their well-being.

While we are concerned that federal and/or state funding cuts may hamper our ability to function optimally, we are proud of the work we are doing in communities across the state. We know that with your ongoing support, the future will be bright for the Black Hills Playhouse.

Bruce Kelley

FROM THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA...

I want to personally welcome you to the Black Hills Playhouse and the marvelous Warren M. Lee Theatre. We are excited about this years season! The BHP staff and volunteers have worked hard to create a safe and enjoyable experience which will enable you to view the best of live theatre with South Dakotas Black Hills as an exquisite backdrop.

The USD College of Fine arts prepares students for a life of amazing and rewarding experiences in art, music, and theatre. Our vibrant campus is alive with music concerts, theatrical performances, and art gallery exhibitions. Our students are highly successful and find financially rewarding and emotionally fulfilling careers from the smallest of our South Dakota communities to the greatest stages in the world.

The USD College of Fine Arts is a proud partner with the Black Hills Playhouse. Together, we combine creativity and knowledge to make a difference for our world.

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY KEN LUDWIG

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer – in case he or she decides to strike again.

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS DIRECTOR’S NOTE

We are so proud to open the season with Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic Murder on the Orient Express. The original novel, published in 1934, was inspired by the real life kidnapping and murder of Charles and Anne Lindbergh’s 20-month-old son in 1932. The horrible incident garnered world-wide attention and was known as the “crime of the century.” While the play Murder on the Orient Express does not delve into the sensationalism of the original Lindbergh crime, it does continue the themes of law and justice that emerged back in the early 1930s during the Great Depression.

Despite its dark origins, both Christie’s novel and Ludwig’s adaptation, Murder on the Orient Express epitomizes the joy of the murder mystery genre. With a fantastic international cast of characters, led by the legendary Hercule Poirot, both the novel and the play take us on a suspense filled journey of who-dun-it, with twists, turns, and misdirects, that keeps the audience guessing who did do it. So, if you know who did it, don’t spoil it for those who don’t!

I am so happy to return for my second year at the BHP. Last year, I directed The Play that Goes Wrong which, oddly enough, is about a theatre company putting on a murder mystery where everything goes wrong, including the set falling around the actors. Now that we are putting on an actual murder mystery, let’s all hope everything goes right!

NOTES ON TONI FROM LINDA ANDERSON

THE POWER OF PLANNED GIVING: LEGACY GIFT FROM TONI MARTIN

In 2014, I met with Toni as she made her estate plans. I had been on the job for four years, and Toni wanted to know the most significant challenges at the Playhouse. I explained to Toni that cash flow was a big issue most years because theatre requires such large investments before ticket sales begin each year. We also discussed the challenge of making constant physical plant improvements in Custer State Park on top of raising 100% of the program funds needed to produce plays.

Toni listened carefully and told me how much the Playhouse meant to her and her concern that it continue well into the future. I gave her the information she needed to provide to her financial planner. Toni was able to enjoy performances at the Playhouse for another 9 years. She always checked in with me and told me how much it meant to her to visit.

After Toni passed, we were informed that she had made two significant gifts to the Playhouse–one was a large gift in cash, and the other was an almost equal gift made to the USD Foundation for endowed funds. These gifts have been transformational for the Playhouse. They have allowed us to make decisions faster and more confidently as issues arise and have made it possible to dream a little bit about the future with the goal of more proactive planning as we grow.

Toni was an unforgettable person who told it like it was and expected results. I know she would be so proud of our work and how we are using her gifts to make the Playhouse thrive. If you would like to include the Playhouse in your estate planning, contact Linda Anderson, at linda@blackhillsplayhouse.com or Jeff Kingsbury, Development Director at jeff@blackhillsplayhouse.com. Or call us at (605) 255-4910 and let’s have coffee so we can open the door for your transformational gift.

Ken Ludwig has had six productions on Broadway and eight in London’s West End. His 34 plays and musicals are staged around the world and throughout the United States every night of the year.

His first play, Lend Me a Tenor, won two Tony Awards and was called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century” by The Washington Post. Crazy For You is currently running on London’s West End. It was previously on Broadway for five years, on the West End for three, and won the Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Musical.

In addition, he has won the Edwin Forrest Award for Contributions to the American Theatre, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Charles MacArthur Award and the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year. His other plays include Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Baskerville, Sherwood, Twentieth Century, Dear Jack, Dear Louise, A Fox on the Fairway, A Comedy of Tenors, The Game’s Afoot, Shakespeare in Hollywood and Murder on the Orient Express. They have starred, among others, Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Kristen Bell, Tony Shaloub, Joan Collins and Henry Goodman.

His book How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare, published by Penguin Random House, won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of the Year, and his essays on theatre are published in the Yale Review. He gives the Annual Ken Ludwig Playwriting Scholarship at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and he served on the Board of Governors for the Folger Shakespeare Library for ten years. His first opera, Tenor Overboard, opened at the Glimmerglass Festival in July 2022. His most recent world premieres were Lend Me A Soprano and Moriarty, and his newest plays and musicals include Pride and Prejudice Part 2: Napoleon at Pemberley and Lady Molly of Scotland Yard. His plays include commissions from the Agatha Christie Estate, the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Old Globe Theatre, and the Bristol Old Vic. For more information visit www.kenludwig.com.

LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Elle Woods is a character who is consistently underestimated, and I think it’s easy to relate to the underdog in any story. We’re all familiar with the adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Elle faces many moments of disappointment but always fights to do what’s right and follows her heart.

In choosing to follow her heart, she finds a passion beyond Warner—a love for helping people through her skills as a lawyer. She discovers a higher purpose than she first thought possible. She tries to shape-shift to fit into others’ boxes for a while, only to realize that being her true self is the best way to be. And this heart isn’t just a romantic heart—it’s about standing true in her integrity.

She lives a little brighter than the people around her, often in her signature pink. In the moments when she shines, she shines brighter than reality, and her glow is contagious. I think we can learn a lot from Elle’s example: living the best version of ourselves by staying true to our integrity and following our heart.

I hope you enjoy the heart we’ve put into this production of Legally Blonde for your viewing pleasure!

15 PERFORMANCES. TEENS 13+ / ADULTS, STRONG LANGUAGE, MATURE THEMES

WAITRESS: THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Waitress started out as a little indie movie that could in 2007. The original script by Adrienne Shelley weaves together multiple stories, showcasing the ups and downs of relationships of the people within a roadside diner, touching on themes of self-discovery and the enduring power of love. Although the film was written about a time not so long ago, it feels remarkably far away from where we are now, with the ubiquity of cell phones and the constant connection they bring. A time where secrets were easier to keep, and especially in small towns, help was often in the hands of the people around you. The musical, with a book by Jessie Nelson, follows those same characters, adding wonderfully catchy heartfelt music from talented song writer and musician, Sara Bareilles, and blends laugh out loud moments with genuine emotional depth. At its center, Jenna, a wildly talented pie-making waitress, finds herself at a crossroad and holding on to the wrong secret. Working through the script I found myself asking many questions. Which legacies get passed down? What’s the story I’m telling myself? Where am I in my own story, at the sweet center or hardened in the crust of service to others? Is it easier to endure or break free from those stories? Even if the details don’t resonate with you personally, the theme of love and care for others in need is universal.

If you are or know someone who is in an abusive relationship, please reach out to www.thehotline.org (yay, cell phones!) to begin a conversation for change. One of the most satisfying parts of opening up is finding out what you’re made of.

Thanks so much for joining us in the kitchen, order up!

Sara Bareilles can next be seen starring in the upcoming Tina Fey’s series, GIRLS5EVA. Bareilles first achieved mainstream critical praise in 2007 with her widely successful hit “Love Song,” which reached No. 1 in 22 countries around the world from her debut album Little Voice. Since then, Sara has gone on to receive seven Grammy® nominations throughout her career, which include Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Love Song” and one Album of the Year for her highly acclaimed third studio album, The Blessed Unrest. Her book, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song, was released in the fall of 2015 by Simon & Schuster and is a New York Times best seller. Making her Broadway debut Sara composed the music and lyrics for Waitress, for which she received her first Tony® Award nomination for Best Score and a 2017 Grammy® Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. She also made her Broadway acting debut in 2017 by stepping into the lead role in Waitress. 2018 was a big year for Sara, she co-hosted the Tony Awards®, was nominated for an Emmy® and Grammy ® for her role in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert and was awarded with the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Hal David Starlight Award. Sara also teamed up with Apple as an executive producer for Little Voice a 10-episode series, for which she created the original music. What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress, her most recent solo studio album, is out on Epic Records. On April 5, 2019 Sara released her fifth full-length and first album of original material since 2013, entitled Amidst the Chaos. For this latest body of work, she joined forces in the studio with legendary Academy® Award-winning producer T Bone Burnett. THE BOOK OF WILL

Without William Shakespeare, we wouldn’t have literary masterpieces like Romeo and Juliet. But without Henry Condell and John Heminges, we would have lost half of Shakespeare’s plays forever! After the death of their friend and mentor, the two actors are determined to compile the First Folio and preserve the words that shaped their lives. They’ll just have to borrow, beg, and band together to get it done. Amidst the noise and color of Elizabethan London, THE BOOK OF WILL finds an unforgettable true story of love, loss, and laughter, and sheds new light on a man you may think you know.

THE BOOK OF WILL DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What if Shakespeare had vanished?

That’s not a rhetorical question. When William Shakespeare died in 1616, over half of his plays had never been printed. They lived only in the memories of actors, the scribbles of prompters, and the fading echoes of performance. Without the efforts of his friends, those plays—Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Twelfth Night, and more—might have disappeared forever.

This play is a love letter—to friendship, to art, to perseverance, and to the act of preserving stories. This is not a play about Shakespeare—it’s a play about those who believed his words mattered enough to save. This story is part history, part imagination. We know who published the First Folio, but the details—how it all came together, what it cost, and why they did it—are lost to time. Lauren Gunderson fills in those gaps with humor, heart, and human truth. And honestly, isn’t it more fun that way?

The Book of Will invites us to celebrate the joy of language. To mourn loss. To laugh through grief. And to witness the power of perseverance, passion, and the will to carry on. As you watch this production, I invite you to reflect on the people in your life who have fought to preserve beauty, truth, and connection. Because sometimes, the most incredible acts of heroism don’t come from creating something new— but from refusing to let something beautiful slip away.

Thank you for being part of this story; you help keep these words alive.
