TECHNICAL STUDIES — JOURNEYWORKER

POTENTIAL CAREERS INCLUDE: Trades Journeyworker

• Associate Degree • 60 Credits

The WTCS Technical Studies – Journeyworker AAS (10-499-5) is designed to help you achieve your career goals through academic recognition of instruction and on-the-job learning that you completed through registered apprenticeship. As a member of the Registered Apprenticeship – College Credit (RACC) Consortium, through the Department of Labor, the WTCS recognizes credit recommendations among RACC partners.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

All WTCS colleges recognize successful completion of an apprenticeship program with at least 400-hours of paid related instruction provided through a WTCS college and possession of a Certificate of Apprenticeship (completion) issued by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development – Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards as fulfilling the 39-credit minimum Technical Studies requirement of the 60-credit Technical Studies – Journeyworker degree. In addition, students must complete 21 general education credits to meet the 60-credit degree requirement. Advanced standing for apprentice-related instruction taken at other accredited institutions is currently determined on an individual basis using established Credit for Prior Learning procedures. RACC recommendations are accepted. Review the Degree Completion Requirements below for more information.

Please Note: Tuition and fees vary by program. Please contact your academic advisor for more information.

DEGREE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

1. Possess a Certificate of Apprenticeship (completion) issued by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce – Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards.

2. Complete all required WTCS apprentice-paid technical instruction with a minimum course grade of C. There are no time limits on credit recognition.

3. Complete a minimum of 21 additional credits to meet the WTCS Associate of Applied Science 60-credit minimum degree requirement. These must include

15 credits of general education distributed across the following categories and 6 elective technical studies or additional general education credits:

• Communications, 6 Credits

• Social Science, 3 Credits

• Behavioral Science, 3 Credits

• Math and/or Science, 3 Credits

• Additional Elective General Education OR Associate Degree Level Technical Studies, 6 Credits

4. Complete at least 25% of your credits through the technical college awarding the AAS degree. A WTCS apprenticeship program with at least 400-hours of paid related instruction (PRI) meets this threshold.

5. Meet stated institutional graduation requirements, including any graduation fees.

Get Help Paying for College

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS & ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE

A Solid Foundation to Get You Started

These new two-year degree programs provide you with the first two years of bachelor’s degree credit courses that will transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

An Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree will give you a solid general education foundation while focusing on the practical and relevant application of skills and knowledge needed to advance your career and prepare you for a bachelor’s degree.

Partnership with UW-Whitewater

Courses for both programs may be held on Blackhawk’s Central Campus or on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County. Upon completion of either program, you will earn either an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science from Blackhawk, and through these programs, you will have the opportunity to transfer to UW-Whitewater or any university or college of your choice.

Transferability of Credits

If you have a particular four-year institution in mind, it is important that you verify the transferability of credits to that college for graduation and for your major. If you have not selected a major field of study, enrolling in the liberal arts transfer program will give you exposure to several areas of study and a broad preparation for transfer.

Workforce & Community Development

Blackhawk’s Workforce & Community Development (WCD) team is the region’s one-stop resource for employee training, professional development, continuing educational opportunities and strategic partnerships.
