New Talons Athletics Program Debuts BLACKHAWK JOINS NJCAA OUR Athletics

Blackhawk Technical College is now a member of the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) and set to compete in Region 4 at the Division II level. Blackhawk now offers: men’s golf, co-ed clay target shooting, women’s volleyball, co-ed bowling and men’s and women’s basketball.

“Blackhawk Athletics is an extension of our goal to create vibrant student life on campus. We believe that the culture of athletics on campus will become a source of pride, uniting our community and creating lasting memories that extend beyond the playing field,” said Dr. Tracy Pierner, President of Blackhawk Technical College.

To lead Blackhawk Athletics, the college hired Todd Voss as a part-time athletic director last fall. Voss, who has 32 years of experience as a teacher and coach, has hired a team of coaches and is spearheading the recruitment of student-athletes.

We believe that the culture of athletics on campus will become a source of pride, uniting our community and creating lasting memories that extend beyond the playing field.

“I’m excited about this opportunity to build an athletics program and to inspire our student-athletes,” he said.

The bowling team, which practices

men’s golf team will use Riverside Golf Course as its home course, and the clay target shooting team is working closely with the Janesville Conservation Club. The volleyball team and the basketball teams will use Blackhawk’s new gymnasium in the Public Safety Center.

Looking ahead, Blackhawk plans to expand the range of sports offered based on student interest.

During an annual all-student picnic event held on May 1 at Blackhawk’s revamped Courtyard at Central Campus, the college unveiled its new athletics nickname: the Blackhawk Talons.

magazine, the decision to adopt the moniker “Talons” reflects the college’s spirit of determination, strength and agility, symbolized by the fiercelooking hawk featured in the newly unveiled athletics logo.

“The launch of the Talons is part of a new chapter for us as we strive to amplify the value of a Blackhawk education. It’s a key component to enrich student life and foster a stronger sense of community for Blackhawk students,” Pierner said.

MIKE BENNETT

Co-Ed Bowling

Coach Bennett attended Parker High School in Janesville where he was a wrestler. He also is an alumnus of Blackhawk Technical College, where he has worked for 35 years on the Facilities Team.

Coach Bennett has been a high school bowling coach for seven years and is an avid bowler himself. He has been bowling in leagues at local and state tournaments for about 40 years.

Teamwork is essential to Coach Bennetts coaching philosophy, as he believes that success in both sports and life is achieved through collaboration and mutual support.

“Because no one is built the same way, I strive to help each player improve their individual style.”

TIM ROCKHOLD

Co-Ed Clay Shooting

Originally from the Quad Cities, Coach Rockhold played football and wrestled for United Township High School before attending Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri, and later Western Illinois University. He also competed in powerlifting and qualified for collegiate nationals and won state titles in both Iowa and Illinois.

Coach Rockhold started trap shooting about a decade ago, competing locally and at a few larger tournaments. His coaching philosophy centers on a shooters strengths.

“You don’t make shooters conform to an exact technique,” he said. “You find what they can do and improve on that. There are several variations to trap shooting, and there are successful shooters using various techniques. I want to make each shooter the best they can be.”

OUR Coaches

HANSEN MCILVAINE

Women’s Volleyball

oach McIlvaine attended Union Grove High School and St. Catherine’s High School in Racine where he participated in volleyball, basketball and track. As a student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, he helped coach the men’s club volleyball team. He went on to help coach the Craig High School girl’s volleyball team and volleyball and basketball at Fort Atkinson High School.

Coach McIlvaine’s focus for the new Talons Women’s Volleyball Team is player development. He said he will strive to create opportunities for his student-athletes to play after their time at Blackhawk.

“My mission is to create a positive, uplifting environment on and off the court for my entire program. Our aim is to excel in the classroom, give it all in the gym and be a pillar of the local volleyball and athletics community.”

MATT YARC

Men’s Golf

Coach Yarc is originally from Libertyville, Illinois, where he played basketball, baseball and football for Libertyville High School. He went on to play golf and basketball at the College of Lake County.

Coach Yarc has been coaching sports for about 40 years, including 12 years as a varsity high school head coach. He also has taught and coached golf for 17 years and has worked with players who went on to play professionally.

His coaching philosophy is simple: “Success is a choice.”

“Every player is different. Once you figure out their strengths and weaknesses, you can help them improve and develop skills that they desire to have.”

DONTE BURT

Men’s Basketball

Coach Burt grew up in Madison and played football and basketball for Madison West High School. He went on to attend Madison College and also play semi-pro football.

With 10 years of basketball coaching experience from first grade through 17U Varsity, Coach Burt is all about practice. His philosophy is to get a little better every day and he believes in working on a skill until it becomes muscle memory.

Coach Burt said he’s excited about building a new men’s basketball program from the start and helping young people learn and grow.

“I put players in a position to be successful and contribute to the team by identifying each player’s strengths and weaknesses.”

KIRSTEN ECKERMAN

Women’s Basketball

Coach Eckerman is from Danville, Ohio, where she participated in basketball, volleyball, softball and track in high school. She went on to attend The College of Wooster where she played basketball and softball. She has held various volunteer coaching positions over the years, and she works as an emergency room nurse.

Coach Eckerman’s coaching philosophy centers on work ethic. She believes discipline beats talent.

“I expect a lot from my players. I expect integrity, work ethic, honesty, and respect of everyone on and off the court. Being a part of this team is more than just putting on a jersey and stepping onto the court. We are ambassadors for the College in the community. This is an exciting time and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

New Housing Option Blackhawk Partners With Beloit College to Offer

Students enrolled at Blackhawk Technical College now have a residential living option through a new partnership with Beloit College.

Students can reside in Peet Hall on Beloit College’s campus, where they can enjoy access to a range of amenities, including fitness facilities and flexible meal plan options. Additionally, Blackhawk will provide complimentary shuttle service between campuses.

“Providing a living space for our students has been a goal of ours for some time. Residential life is a key part of the overall college experience, and we are grateful for Beloit College’s partnership in helping us realize this vision,” said Dr. Tracy Pierner, President of Blackhawk.

This new housing option aligns with the college’s goal to provide students with a more comprehensive and traditional college experience, coinciding with the recent launch of Blackhawk Athletics. Both initiatives aim to enrich student life and foster a stronger sense of community for Blackhawk students.

Residence hall living is offered at six of the 16 colleges within the Wisconsin Technical College System. Some offer traditional residence halls, while others have partnerships with neighboring four-year universities or offer resources to find off-campus housing.

Beloit College President Eric Boynton said the housing agreement reflects the college’s wish to continue building partnerships with organizations and industries in the region, particularly with Blackhawk.

“We are especially excited about our partnerships with Blackhawk because they reflect our shared commitment to providing students with exceptional opportunities for academic and personal development,” he said.

The college and Blackhawk have already joined forces to offer emergency medical technician (EMT) and certified nursing assistant (CNA) certifications for Beloit students, Boynton said.

“These partnerships help prepare possible pathways for bachelor’s degree completion for Blackhawk students in health science careers who are seeking to transfer into a four-year degree institution,” he said.

SCIENCE CENTER

Construction has started on a new science center at Central Campus. This versatile space will include cutting-edge equipment needed to conduct innovative laboratory activities in all facets of Natural Science, including Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Physics. The physical space will promote flexibility and ensure support for all students, including those just taking a single science course as well as those students in STEM and Health Occupation programs.

INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING EDUCATION CENTER (IMEC)

Students in Blackhawk’s manufacturing programs will have a new home this fall in the Innovative Manufacturing Education Center (IMEC) at Central Campus.

The building is approximately 52,000 square feet and includes dedicated welding areas and specialized laboratory facilities. The former administration building connects to the new facility and has been transformed into office space and classrooms. The IMEC will serve students in Automation Systems Technology, Computer Numeric Control Technician, ElectroMechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, Manufacturing

Engineering Technology, Welding & Fabrication and HVAC-R.

The new facility also includes a cuttingedge manufacturing lab space made possible by a $250,000 donation by The Prent Corporation.

In June, Blackhawk’s manufacturing programs moved out of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Milton, which was previously owned by the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation. In May 2023, the Foundation sold the property to KANDU Industries and then donated the proceeds of $7 million to the college for the new facility at Central Campus.

PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER

The final building within the Public Safety + Transportation Complex (PSTC) is now open and will host its first semester of classes this fall.

Called the Public Safety Center (PSC), this building houses classrooms for Blackhawk’s emergency services, fire and police programs as well as a track, gym and fitness center. It’s the largest building within the PSTC, which includes the Center for Transportation Studies, an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course, a Fire Tow, an observation building and a scenario training village.

In 2018, Blackhawk purchased the land at West Sunny Lane and Prairie Street to address the growing demand for additional

training spaces. After reviewing all needs, Blackhawk proposed a multi-purpose training complex for EMS/EMT, Fire Protection Technician, Law Enforcement, CDL/Truck Driver Training, Auto Technician, Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technician and Motorcycle Rider Safety. The complex also serves select workforce and community development offerings.

On Nov. 3, 2020, about 60 percent of voters favored the referendum, moving the project forward. Construction began in March 2021. By June 2022, nearly all of the projects on the main training grounds were complete and open for use. Construction on the Public Safety Center began in October 2022.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! SEPT. 26 • 4-7 P.M.

Check out the new Public Safety Center on Thursday, Sept. 26, between 4-7 p.m. This open house will be held during Blackhawk’s Annual Fall Fest. Both are free and open to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held within the building’s lobby area at 5:30 p.m.

Own Words

Rebecca Barnett

Substance Use Disorder Counseling and Human Services

My name is Rebecca Barnett, and I am a current Substance Use Disorder Counseling/Human Services student. I also am the Blackhawk Ambassador to the Wisconsin Technical College System and president of the Student

Government Association. In addition to that, I also serve as the Student Representative to Blackhawk’s District Board, work as a Peer Advisor, and am the treasurer of Blackhawk’s MultiCultural Alliance and Phi Theta Kappa chapters.

I graduated from Union County High School in Maynardville, Tennessee, and

I moved to Wisconsin after navigating mental health treatment in 2021. My dad and stepmom live in Beloit, so my kids and I moved here to have better support.

Five years from now, I hope to have my master’s degree in Substance Abuse Counseling, and I hope to one day get my doctorate. I would like to work in higher education and continue my advocacy work for special needs families and transgender youth.

I am on track to graduate in spring 2025 with an associate’s degree in both Substance Use Disorder Counseling and Human Services.

Kendra Rhodes Business Management

My name is Kendra Rhodes, and I spent the first nine years of my life in a small town in Minnesota named Hutchinson before starting third grade in Beloit. I then went on to graduate from Beloit Memorial High School.

I chose Blackhawk because of the many fantastic things I’ve heard about the teachers and courses. I’m in the Business Management program, and I’ve heard many good things from past graduates about the quality of the material they were studying in this program.

Blackhawk has many outstanding resources available to me that have made my first semester here more tranquil than I had anticipated. I believe the most beneficial accommodation this

school offers is the professors and their willingness to work with you to help you reach your goals and aspirations.

I plan to graduate in spring 2026. I am currently the social media manager for a bar in Stillman Valley, Illinois. I would like to further my understanding

of what it means to own and market your own business by opening my own coffee and pastry shop, where I can sell pastry, tea and coffee flavors from all different regions and cultures.

My advice for those considering coming to Blackhawk would be not to fear asking for instructions or help of any sort. Every staff member and student I’ve met in my short time at Blackhawk has been nothing less than warm and welcoming.

Gabrielle Hoffman

New Diagnostic Medical Sonography Graduate

My name is Gabrielle Hoffmann, and I was born and raised in Roscoe, Illinois. I was homeschooled all my life.

I chose Blackhawk because of the programs it offers. I’m so happy I did because I love the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program here at Blackhawk. I always knew I wanted to help people and I wanted a job where I felt like I was making a difference. I’ve

found both of those things and more in sonography. Ultrasound is my life’s passion and calling.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography instructors, Melissa and Michele, are a large reason as to why I’ve been successful. They are always looking for new ways to support their students. They care and want us to succeed.

Being a full-time student in the medical field was hard. Between coursework and clinicals, most of our time was dedicated to this program. Blackhawk has many assistance programs that I wish more people knew about. I’ve been

able to receive emergency financial aid through programs like Coins for Caring. The staff in the Care Center really cares if you meet your goals or not.

I applied for and was accepted into the SDMS Foundation Emerging Leaders Program thanks to the recommendation from my DMS instructors. This program mentors future leaders in the sonography field and has been such a wonderful opportunity for me. My goal is to be a pediatric sonographer.

Samantha Kotlarek

New Digital Marketing Graduate

My name is Samantha Kotlarek. I grew

up in Milwaukee and attended an online high school.

I chose to attend Blackhawk Technical College because I wanted to get a degree in just a few years, yet also wanted to move a bit from home.

I graduated in May in the Digital Marketing program. I was interested in the design part of the major, but I also enjoy sales and marketing, so I felt like it fit the best.

Blackhawk helped me pursue my goals by having the accommodations department, so I am able to get the accommodations I need to make sure I succeed. I have been on the President’s List every semester.

I am planning on moving back to Milwaukee to hopefully do social media for a business.

My advice for individuals who are considering Blackhawk is to determine how you want to study and learn. Blackhawk offers classes that are MyEdChoice, where the classes are in-person, on Zoom during class time and recorded to watch later. This way, you can learn whatever way works best for you. If you have a busy schedule with your work and personal life, Blackhawk would be great for you with the MyEdChoice classes. There are also inperson and online-only classes available.

JULIO NEGRON

Automotive Instructor

Our staff and faculty bring diverse experiences and a shared passion for fostering a flexible and supportive learning environment. IN THEIR OWN WORDS, get to know the newest members of our team and discover the unique talents they bring to enrich our college.

Julio Negron

My name is Julio Negron, and I grew up in Waukegan, Illinois. I am an Automotive Instructor at Blackhawk.

I studied Automotive Technology in Kenosha and was drawn to this career because of its ability to change people’s lives for the better.

During my first visit to the campus, the staff was very welcoming. There is no doubt that the faculty and staff here are a group of great people.

The flexibility of courses is great for working students with families to take care of. Time is a big factor for people thinking about continuing education.

I had an instructor when I was in college who pushed me to my absolute limits and never went easy on me. At the time, I despised him for it and

felt singled out. Now, as an instructor myself, I can understand why he leaned on me so much. It may require an extra nudge to uncover a student’s full potential but once that potential is tapped, they are capable of a great future for themselves.

Mandi Adie

My name is Mandi Adie. I am the new Copywriter and Content Creator in the Marketing and Communications Department.

I grew up in Alberta, Canada and moved to Oklahoma to attend college at the University of Central Oklahoma. I earned my MA in Philosophy at UW-Madison before venturing into a career in writing.

I am very excited to have the opportunity to put a spotlight on the talented people who work and study at Blackhawk Technical College. I have already met so many warm and accomplished people in just the first week of my new role!

In my free time I enjoy reading fiction, playing nerdy board games and adventuring outdoors. My favorite novel of all time is True Grit by Charles Portis, and I am currently reading Just Kids by Patti Smith.

OUR Faculty & Staff

I enjoy movies with either talking animals, the Muppets or John Wick in them. My hot take is that the perfect movie would have all three.

Deanna Lette

My name is Deanna Lette. I grew up in Beloit but have lived most of my life in Janesville. I am the new Assistant to the VP of Finance and College Operations.

When COVID hit and my job seemed to be in jeopardy, I enrolled in the Administrative Professional program at Blackhawk, starting in the fall of 2020. I served in an administrative assistant role for much of my career, so it was a great fit for my future.

I have always enjoyed being a member of a team. A supporting role is rewarding to me. I like taking on tasks to make someone else’s workload a little lighter.

DEANNA LETTE

Assistant to the VP of Finance and College Operations

I enjoyed my time at Blackhawk as a student, so when this position opened up that aligned with my schooling and ultimate career goals, it seemed like a perfect fit.

Blackhawk offers its students flexibility and an increase in online classes. Many of the classes I’ve taken have been hybrid, giving the student options that fit anyone’s life. If I hadn’t been able to complete my classes online or in the evenings, I wouldn’t have been able to attend.

Rachel Gomez

My name is Rachel Gomez, and I grew up in Beloit. I am the new Welcome Center Assistant at Blackhawk.

I was homeschooled for my high school years, and I attended the Advanced Learning Academy of Wisconsin (ALAW) from the Barron Area School District. Before coming here, I worked

as a receptionist and sterilization tech for two years at a dental office.

I was drawn to the atmosphere at Blackhawk. When I had my interview, everyone was so welcoming, open and resourceful. It felt as if I were already part of Blackhawk. From that moment, I knew I wanted to work here.

In my previous job, I enjoyed working with patients, making sure they felt welcomed and heard regarding their treatment. That was something that I wanted to continue doing. I am shy and kind of awkward at times. Nonetheless, I wanted to keep learning how to handle all sorts of situations, to meet new people with different backgrounds, and to help them in any way I can. Blackhawk offers all of that.

Blackhawk gives opportunity to those who have very busy schedules. I also love that throughout the whole education process, students have the support they need to reach their goals.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin from time to time.

Blackhawk Celebrates

MAY GRADUATES OUR Graduates

Blackhawk Technical College held two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18, celebrating more than 200 graduates at the Dream Center at Central Christian Church in Beloit.

“As a Blackhawk student, you learned new things. You acquired advanced skills. You made good friends. You persevered through challenges, and you worked hard to be here today. You did it!” said Dr. Karen Schmitt, Blackhawk’s Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The first ceremony recognized students graduating from programs within the college’s Business, Manufacturing, Technology and Transportation divisions, and the

second ceremony honored students from programs within the Health Sciences and Public Safety divisions.

Both events featured two speakers. Passion Tann, who was voted Student of the Year at this year’s Student Awards Ceremony, spoke about her choice to be brave when she started her journey at Blackhawk.

“If there is anything you get from my speech, it’s to make friends with uncertainty and continue being brave. Keep putting yourself in new situations and allow yourself the room to fail, make mistakes, to be unsure. And from that you can learn and grow because that is what true courage is,” said Tann, who earned an associate

degree in Business Management.

Tinika Kilgore, a nurse practitioner who is the recipient of Blackhawk’s Distinguished Alumni Award, shared how Blackhawk gave her the foundation to pursue her career goals as a nurse. She currently has her Master of Science in Nursing and works for UW Health.

“Completing my education through Blackhawk changed me as a person. I had grown so much, and that had a positive impact on my family. My success inspired other family members to further their education and obtain degrees at Blackhawk,” Kilgore said.

Heartland Dental has established a new scholarship to support aspiring dental hygienists through a $11,550 gift to the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation.

One $500 scholarship will be granted annually each fall to a student who is enrolled in Blackhawk’s Dental Hygienist program, which launched in the fall of 2022 in direct response to a declining oral health workforce.

After the new program launched, Blackhawk and Heartland Dental formed a partnership that provides students with the opportunity to shadow a dental hygienist for a day. Heartland Dental team members also visit Blackhawk to present a resume-building seminar to the graduating Dental Hygienist class, followed by individual mock interviews.

“There are numerous costs—beyond tuition and books— associated with dental hygiene education and licensure. This scholarship will alleviate some of that financial burden for a student every year, for years to come. It has the potential to open doors and may be life-changing for some students,” said Lisa Johnson, Dental Hygienist Program Director.

Blackhawk Technical College Foundation: A Year of Growth and Impact

Through strong community partnerships and generous donors, the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation has had a remarkable year, significantly benefiting many students.

OUR Community

Tinika Kilgore Honored with Blackhawk’s Distinguished Alumni Award

Tinika Kilgore, a nurse practitioner for UW Health, is the recipient of Blackhawk’s Distinguished Alumni Award, which honors an outstanding Blackhawk graduate who has demonstrated the value of a technical college education through career accomplishments, community service, continued personal and educational growth and support of the technical college system.

Kilgore was honored at the 2024 Golden Brick Awards ceremony in April, and she was one of the guest speakers at Blackhawk’s May Commencement ceremonies.

“Completing my education through Blackhawk changed me as a person. I had grown so much, and that had a positive impact on my family. My success inspired other family members to further their education and obtain degrees at Blackhawk,” Kilgore told the graduates.

Kilgore worked at a restaurant with aspirations of making culinary arts her fulltime career after her graduation from Beloit Memorial High School. But at the advice of a cousin, she decided to go in a different direction. She opted to work at a nursing home and then attend Blackhawk to receive her certified nursing assistant technical diploma. Kilgore’s work ethic was quickly noticed, and she decided to work toward her associate’s degree in Nursing from Blackhawk.

After her Blackhawk graduation in 2004, Tinika started what would become a 20-year career at the Beloit Health System. In December 2022, she moved on to UW Health and is now considering a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Cooking remains a passion for Tinika, and she hopes to one day become a personal chef.

Blackhawk Partners with Elevation Air to Offer

Blackhawk Technical College is set to launch a fast-track pilot program this fall in collaboration with Elevation Air.

This 21-month program is designed for students aiming for a career in professional aviation. It’s open to new and returning college students, with additional opportunities for local high school students juniors and seniors.

First

Dental Hygienist Students Graduate

The inaugural class of Blackhawk Technical College’s Dental Hygienist program celebrated the completion of their degree in May with a pinning ceremony at Central Campus.

“This is a momentous occasion,” said Lisa Johnson, Dental Hygienist program director. “Every student in our inaugural class took a chance on a new program with no track record, no history… You embraced my vision for this program and helped me make it better.”

The Dental Hygienist program was launched by Blackhawk Technical College in the fall of 2022 in response to a growing need for skilled professionals in oral health care, particularly in the roles of dental hygienists and dental assistants. The program offers an associate degree, enabling graduates to pursue licensure as dental hygienists. Students in the program also help run Blackhawk’s Dental Clinic, which is open to community members at a reduced cost.

After completion of the program, dental hygienist graduates are required to successfully complete comprehensive written and clinical examinations given under the direction of the State

The Professional Pilot Program includes a weekly ground school classroom course held at Blackhawk’s Central Campus coupled with flight training at Elevation Air at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport in Janesville.

Students will dedicate approximately 20 hours per week to training,

encompassing classroom study, flight training and after-school assignments. This schedule enables students to earn the necessary FAA certifications, including private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot and flight instructor certifications.

The program also includes state-ofthe-art training equipment, featuring

Dentistry Examining Board, the American Dental Association’s Joint Commission.

Of the 10 Dental Hygienist students, two were award recipients during the pinning: Nancy Espana was the recipient of the Dental Hygienist Rising Star Award, which is given to the student who has demonstrated exceptional growth throughout the program.

Brittany Oren was given the Golden Scaler Award, which is given to a student who has demonstrated remarkable skill and talent throughout the program.

Also, Lisa Anderson was a recipient of a scholarship from the Wisconsin Hospital Association.

Professional Pilot Program FROM BLACKHAWK TO CONCORDIA:

A Pathway to Nursing Excellence

For Heather Holbrook, choosing to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Concordia University was an easy decision. She is part of a growing number of students taking advantage of Blackhawk Technical College’s direct pathway to a BSN through its partnership with Concordia.

“I chose this pathway as it fit my schedule and the program accepted 84 of my transfer credits from Blackhawk, leaving me with only 36 credits to obtain my BSN. It was very easy to apply and transfer the credits,” she said.

The direct transfer program is part of Blackhawk’s University Center offerings, which provide students with access to a range of bachelor’s degree programs without needing to relocate. Students can choose from a selection of courses and majors

offered by Lakeland University, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County, and Concordia University. The RN to BSN pathway from Blackhawk to Concordia offers a streamlined and flexible option for nurses to advance their education, with the opportunity to complete the BSN entirely online.

“Blackhawk is committed to providing our students with opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential without having to sacrifice their current commitments,” said Dr. Tracy Pierner, President of Blackhawk Technical College. “Our partnership with Concordia University exemplifies this commitment, offering a clear and efficient path for our nursing graduates to advance their careers and education.”

Holbrook began her journey at Blackhawk in the Medical Assistant program. She completed the first two semesters of nursing clinicals in December 2014 and successfully passed the NCLEX for the LPN qualification. Encouraged by her employer, she pursued an RN qualification at Blackhawk, completing the final semester in December 2023.

With an expected graduation date in May 2026 from Concordia’s BSN program, Holbrook looks forward to continuing her education.

Blackhawk Technical College and the Janesville Innovation Center (JIC) entered into a new partnership in February that combines innovation, entrepreneurship and workforce development.

Mark Borowicz, Blackhawk’s Director of Workforce and Community Development, has assumed the administrative and operational responsibilities of JIC. He had already been working closely with JIC, and a planned retirement by Mike Mathews, the JIC operations manager, facilitated this new arrangement. Borowicz will work with existing JIC partners and prospective tenants to provide holistic business-centric resources.

WTCS PRESIDENT Visits Blackhawk NEWS Round Up

Dr. Morna Foy, President of the Wisconsin Technical College System, spent the day at Blackhawk Technical College on Thursday, May 9, touring the college’s new Public Safety Center and meeting with students, faculty and staff.

The visit was part of Foy’s “Tour of Excellence” project. Since last November, Foy has been making visits to each of the state’s 16 technical colleges to recognize and celebrate technical college students, staff, instructors, alumni and business partners who connect each college to their communities.

As part of her visit to Blackhawk, Foy spoke with a group of women students, staff and faculty, focusing on her career path as a woman in leadership. The event, which was part

of a leadership series hosted by the Student Government Association, included topics from strategies on leading leaders to resilience in the face of challenges.

Foy also had the opportunity to meet several therapy dogs who were on campus as part of a mental health program through the college’s Multi-Cultural Alliance.

In March, Foy announced that she plans to retire later this year. She has been the WTCS president since 2012, and she was the first female to hold the position.

Phillips Honored as MACC Educator of the Year

The Milton Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Greg Phillips, Blackhawk Dean of Manufacturing, Apprenticeship, Training and Technology (MATT), as Educator of the Year during the chamber’s annual dinner and awards event on March 21.

As the Dean of Blackhawk’s MATT Division, Phillips has been a driving force behind forging vital partnerships between industry, community and K-12 institutions. His efforts have ensured the alignment and provision of crucial training and educational resources essential for workforce development.

Phillips’s leadership played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Stateline Manufacturing Alliance (SMA), a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing talent pipeline development needs within the manufacturing sector. Under his guidance, the SMA has facilitated programs like the Accelerated Industrial Maintenance (AIM) program, providing paid summer training opportunities for participants and exposing them to manufacturing careers.

Phillips’s commitment to community engagement is evident through his involvement in events like the Milton Maker Market where he and his team were part of the planning team and offered hands-on activities at the event, including welding and robotics. Phillips also does volunteer work at Milton High School for the Academic Career Planning presentations.

Bobbi Bishofberger, MATT Division Co-Chair and Welding Instructor, and Bryan Coddington, MATT Division Co-Chair and Engineering Technology Instructor, joined Greg Phillips (center) in celebration of his award.
