Tim Davila

Spanish Instructor Enjoys Staying Connected to the Language

Growing up in a Puerto Rican-American home, Tim Davila has a deep love for the Spanish language. That passion has resulted in more than 20 years of teaching the Spanish for the Absolute Beginner class at Blackhawk Technical College.

“I love the Spanish language and knew that I wanted to stay connected to the language and help others learn it in the process,” he said.

An Ohio native, Tim studied Fine Arts and Spanish at Rockford College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1996. His position at Blackhawk came about when the current professor, who was moving out of town, asked him if he’d be interested in taking it over.

Teaching Spanish to adults who find it important and beneficial to learn a second language is rewarding, Tim said, and class flexibility at Blackhawk has benefited both him and his wife, who was able to complete her degree.

“I love the fact that I am able to help offer classes such as mine that work with students who work full time and need to take nighttime classes that fit into their schedule,” he said. “I have needed it as well at certain times.”

Tim also has taken part in the Rock County Externship program, which aims to immerse teachers in business environments and shadow specific occupations or disciplines for one week. The knowledge they gain can then be included in their classroom teachings.

Tim’s externship experience with Alliant Energy taught him about the Renewable Energy Program and gave him a deeper appreciation for the trades in general. He even enrolled himself in a certification course on workplace ergonomics through OSHA so that he can prepare his gym students for what is expected when working in the trades.

Outside of Blackhawk, Tim teaches Spanish, Fine Arts and Physical Education at Rock County Christian School in Beloit. He also coaches junior high volleyball and varsity girls basketball and is the Worship Pastor at Resonate Church in Janesville. He and his wife have six children, a dog, a cat and five chickens.
