Hero Street

Presenter: Kelly Rundle of Fourth Wall Films Only a block and a half long, Second Street in Silvis, Illinois, lost six young men in World War II and two in the Korean War, more than any other street in America.

Hero Street, as it is now known, has provided more than 100 service members since Mexican-American immigrants settled there in 1929. Join us at the beautiful Quad City Botanical Center for a short film, “Letters Home to Hero Street,” followed by a discussion and question-and-answer time with the Emmy-nominated filmmaker Kelly Rundle. We will be discussing the story and the making of the film. The film is based on 130 letters written by Frank Sandoval over a two-year period (1942-44). The last letter was written just a month before he was killed in Burma.

Chippiannock Cemetery

Presenter: Art Pitz Chippiannock is a Native American term that means “place of the dead.” Chippiannock Cemetery is located in Rock Island, Illinois, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chippiannock has long been considered a Quad-Cities landmark and is the resting place of more than 25,000 people, including some of the Quad Cities most memorable individuals. One can trace the history of the territory – and even the nation – in the inscriptions on the headstones of the adventurers and settlers, rivermen and preachers, statesmen and builders who have left their mark on the territory. Join us as we discuss the rich history that lies within Chippiannock.

Quad Cities Brewing History

Presenter: Mike Wenthe

Join us as we take a look back at the colorful history of the Quad Cities during the Prohibition Era as well as the vast history of brewing in the Quad Cities. After large numbers of German immigrants arrived in the 1850s and after the Civil War ended, five breweries were functioning in Davenport, IA: Mathias Frahm and Son, Koehler and Lange (also known as Arsenal Brewery), Littig Brothers (later Mengel and Klindt and Eagle Brewery), Julius Lehrkind’s Brewery and Zoller Brothers. The five breweries primarily distributed their beer in Davenport, Rock Island and Moline. Brewing has a rich history in the Quad Cities area and has managed to survive many changes, through the Civil War, Prohibition and has now morphed into the thriving industry we know today.

Your family and friends will receive an e-mail invitation to view your photos on a slideshow without having to download each individual picture. Learn how to rotate, crop, add borders, fix red-eye, and more. You will also learn how to create a photobook using Shutterfly. Select backgrounds for your pages, a cover, fancy edges for your pictures and more.
