North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) iWireless Center • Moline, Illinois

For three days in early April, Black Hawk College hosted hundreds of youth and college competitors for the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference 2015. Contestants competed in the following areas: • Agribusiness • Agricultural Mechanics & Material Handling • Agricultural Communications • Computer Applications • Crops Judging • Dairy Judging

• Horse Judging • Horticulture Judging • Knowledge Bowl • Livestock Judging • Meat Animal & Livestock Management • Soils Judging

The stats: • 12 contests • 173 teams • 24 states • 325 youth contestants • 51 schools • 834 individual entries • 49,896 meals packaged for the River Bend Food Bank The theme for this year’s conference aligned with the Agriculture Department’s mission statement, “What starts here changes the world, one student at a time.” “The young people in attendance at this conference are the future of agriculture,” said Drew Cotton, conference co-chair and assistant professor of horse science. “They have unlimited potential and optimism with which to attack challenges and opportunities,” he said. The NACTA Livestock, Dairy and Soils Judging Conference began in 1970. The college co-hosted in 1975 and hosted in 2004. The 2015 event involved months of planning and little sleep for East Campus faculty, staff and students the week of the conference. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success!

Horse Judging Awards & Scholarships Susan Shipp Memorial Scholarship (Freshman Horse Judging) .............................................................................. TBA This award is given in memory of Susan, a transfer student who lost her life in a car accident while a student at BHE in November, 1994. It is awarded to a member of the freshmen horse judging team. The selection is based on Contest results, an essay about their Personal Characteristics and first semester GPA.

Pard’s Western Store Work Horse Award (Sophomore Horse Judging) ................................................................ TBA Each year Pard’s Western store presents a gift certificate to the sophomore horse judge that competed on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals for themselves and the team; stayed very coachable until the end and added value to the team by motivating others and staying a team player. They always tried hard and finished strong, but not necessarily finished 1st. Also plans to continue their education and judging at a four-year institute.

Robert & Jean Wolf Memorial Scholarship (Sophomore Horse Judging) .............................................................. TBA In the fall of 2002 Jon Wolf, founder of the Equine program, suffered the loss of both parents, Robert and Jean Wolf of Polo during the month of September. They were of vital support in the beginning of the program and remained so to the end. Both parents are so reflected in the personality and dedication of Jon. This award will be given to a sophomore horse judge that compted on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals and made major progress in their placing of classes and oral reasons; stayed very coachable until the end, trying hard and finishing strong. This award goes to the sophomore who accumulates the most contest points in fall competition.

2014-15 Sophomore Team Members Heather Burroughs

Brittany Butler

Muscatine, Iowa

Warsaw, Ind.

Heather has been on the show team for three years. Her greatest accomplishment was High Point Open Rider of the Region. Heather’s most memorable part of show team was traveling to Florida for semi-finals. She gained horsemanship skills, and the ability to ride different types of horses while participating on the team. Her future plans are to transfer to Iowa State University for Ag Business. We would like to thank Heather for her consistent leadership.

Brittany has been a member of the show team for two years. Brittany’s greatest accomplishment during show team was winning a blue ribbon at her first IHSA horse show. Her most memorable thing about show team was the bus rides to the away horse shows. She learned from show team how important it is to use your body to help guide your horse. Brittany plans to attend Black Hawk for a third year and to continue riding for the show team. We would like to thank Brittany for helping organize things before the horse shows.

Marissa Chapa Maple Park, Ill.

Maple Park, IL Marissa has been on the show team for two years. Her most memorable part of the show team was traveling on the road and getting to see a lot of neat places. Marissa became a more versatile rider during her time on the show team. She also thought the show team helped her identify her weaknesses which helped her improve herself as a rider. Marissa plans on transferring to Oklahoma State University. She will be on the show team but the skills she learned at BHC will stick with her through the rest of her riding career. We would like to thank Marissa for always having an upbeat attitude, and boosting other team members confidence.

Bella Frisk

Cambridge, Ill.

Bella has been a part of the show team for two years. Her greatest accomplishment during show team was being involved in a great organization and learning how to ride different types of horses. Her most memorable moments on show team were in the practice pen. Everyone works together at practice and pushes each other to be the best they can be. Bella learned to be better in her riding position and a more versatile rider. The greatest challenge I had was adjusting to the different style of riding.
