Dear Friends, It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the 10th Annual National Black Economic Conference (NBEC). 2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. This year has been anything but normal – natural disasters around the globe, a pandemic that has killed more than 780,000 people worldwide, the death of Breyonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery sparked civil unrest and international protests for black lives, the loss of two civil rights icons - John Lewis and C. T. Vivian, and we are facing the most important election of our time on November 3rd. For many, this year has been mentally, emotionally, and financially draining. It has been and continues to be a year of uncertainty. However, this does not mean that we should not push through and push forward. There is a silver lining in the midst of it all. We have all been forced to pause, a much-needed break from our norms. We were gifted with a moment to reflect, realign, reset, and reimagine what is possible.

This year’s conference is a true testament of reimagining what is possible as we host our first ever virtual national conference with more than 50 thought leaders convening to discuss generational wealth. Although I would have loved to meet each of you in person, I am grateful that with technology, we can gather virtually and engage in solutions driven dialogue. You are certainly in for a treat as you will experience a powerful opening Keynote address from former NBA Player and International Motivational Speaker, Walter Bond, fourteen seminars focused on industries to start and/or grow your business, strategies for real estate and financial investments, doing business in global markets including the Caribbean and Africa, and a path to comprehensive health and wellness. Learn from leading experts such as NBCU’s Yvette Miley, OneUnited Bank’s CEO Kevin Cohee, The Honey Pot Company’s Beatrice Dixon, UI Global Brand’s Psyche Terry, Ambassador of Ghana H.E. Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah, and Food Network’s CHOPPED winner celebrity chef Ed Harris, to name a few.

I believe the information you will receive will not only create a roadmap to building generational wealth but will also inspire and empower you to persevere through what’s to come in these unprecedented times. Executive Director, African American Research Library & Cultural Center Prior to her current role Makiba served as the Assistant Chief Librarian at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York. Her work includes faculty and community collaborations focusing on the role of libraries and archives in advancing social justice through digital archives like Documenting Ferguson, oral histories, and GIS mapping related to the LGBTQ community. Makiba is an author and her most recent piece appears in Library Trends’ special issue Race and Ethnicity in Library and Information Science. She was recently recognized by Florida Library Association with the 2020 award for Outstanding Scholarly Contribution and selected by Legacy South Florida Magazine as a member of the “50 Most Influential and Powerful Black Professionals of 2020.”

State of Black Business

2020

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, but especially the Black community. From disproportionately dying from Covid-19 to police brutality, the Black community has been through it all this year, especially Black owned businesses. According to a New York Times article, more than 40% of Black business owners reported they were not working in April compared to only 17% of white small business owners. Many Black businesses are struggling during this pandemic due to lack of resources including access to loans. Black business owners are mainly in the restaurant business, and retail which were the first businesses to shut down during the pandemic.

A report published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the number of African American Business owners plummeted from 1.1 million in February 2020 to 640,000 in April. The Black unemployment rate is at a high 16.8% reported in May compared to 5.5% reported last July. In addition to that, the protests for the Justice of George Floyd played a role in Black businesses struggling because some of their storefronts were damaged during protest. The bright side of the protests for most businesses was the message , and acknowledgement of inequalities the Black community faces. All in all 2020 has been a difficult year for the Black community, and our businesses, but we are a resilient community, and always find a way to recover.
