STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

With extensive design experience working on buildings constructed of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and steel stud wall systems, this discipline tackles everything from new building construction, to historic preservation, to rehabilitation, developing holistic solutions that are adaptable and efficient, while minimizing environmental impact.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN EXPERTISE:

• Mild steel & post-tensioned, cast-in place concrete systems • Precast concrete systems • Structural steel frames • Cold-formed steel, masonry, and wood-bearing wall systems • Heavy timber structural systems • Shallow and deep foundations • Historic renovation and preservation • Existing structure repurposing • Structure evaluation • Peer reviews

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

LIGHT GAUGE STEEL CONSTRUCTION BKV Group researches innovative construction technology that enhances the value of the project, leverages the facility budget, and shortens the construction duration. Innovation in the application of codes and building systems allows differentiation in the marketplace. At BKV Group, that potential is: • Combining building systems and code categories to increase density • Flexible approach in partnering with clients and contractors in selection of appropriate structural systems • Innovative design of 10-story load-bearing, cold-formed steel systems • Panelized and modular construction for labor reduction

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

NET-ZERO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN With renewed focus on carbon footprint reduction, new design approaches will need to be considered in order to meet the challenges ahead. Net-zero carbon goals at the federal and local levels will ultimately mandate changes both in the power generation industry and building industry. Key drivers are the need to increase clean energy capacity into the power grid, and reduction in building site carbon footprint. A combination of more aggressive energy conservation code requirements and utility company incentives will result in a need for creative and technologically advanced sustainable design strategies. Extending the reach of the more traditional energy conservation fundamentals such as building envelope performance, heat recovery, refrigeration system efficiency, high efficiency lighting, and air and water distribution efficiency will play a major role in meeting these needs. Implementation of on-site renewable energy and energy storage is anticipated to be highly incentivized in the future to reduce peak demand on the existing electric power grid; this in support of converting the power generation industry toward the net zero carbon goals. At BKV, our engineering staff has extensive experience in these areas of energy conservation and high performance building design. We believe continued focus on extending the reach of the more traditional energy conservation fundamentals, combined with specific sustainable technologies such as water source VRF with heat recovery, Ground Source Heat Pump Systems, Hybrid Heat Pump Systems, and Thermal Energy Storage will all play a major role in meeting future net zero carbon goals.
