NET-ZERO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN With renewed focus on carbon footprint reduction, new design approaches will need to be considered in order to meet the challenges ahead. Net-zero carbon goals at the federal and local levels will ultimately mandate changes both in the power generation industry and building industry. Key drivers are the need to increase clean energy capacity into the power grid, and reduction in building site carbon footprint. A combination of more aggressive energy conservation code requirements and utility company incentives will result in a need for creative and technologically advanced sustainable design strategies. Extending the reach of the more traditional energy conservation fundamentals such as building envelope performance, heat recovery, refrigeration system efficiency, high efficiency lighting, and air and water distribution efficiency will play a major role in meeting these needs. Implementation of on-site renewable energy and energy storage is anticipated to be highly incentivized in the future to reduce peak demand on the existing electric power grid; this in support of converting the power generation industry toward the net zero carbon goals. At BKV, our engineering staff has extensive experience in these areas of energy conservation and high performance building design. We believe continued focus on extending the reach of the more traditional energy conservation fundamentals, combined with specific sustainable technologies such as water source VRF with heat recovery, Ground Source Heat Pump Systems, Hybrid Heat Pump Systems, and Thermal Energy Storage will all play a major role in meeting future net zero carbon goals.

Our electrical team collaborates with ownership and other disciplines to analyze the project’s power needs, and identify the power requirements to their buildings by taking into consideration occupancies and construction types. Our team works with the electrical utility to locate the electrical infrastructure, and size the generator to power the building life safety, standby, and peak shaving systems. We also design the power distribution system, locate electrical rooms, provide feeders, and branch circuit routing, and circuit receptacles, HVAC & plumping equipment, lighting fixtures and owner equipment. Through collaboration and close coordination with stakeholders, our electrical team innovates and designs state-of-the-art lighting systems and lighting control systems that exceeds energy standards and at the same time magnify the space’s beauty while enhancing the user’s experience. All indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures are energy-efficient LEDs, with full automated lighting control systems incorporated into the design that includes vacancy sensors, occupancy sensors, timers, dimmers, seen scenarios, and day harvesting devices.
We collaborate with owners, architects and other disciplines to engineer and design the optimum power systems, lighting systems, technology systems, and safety & security systems for affordable and market-rate housing, senior living, adaptive use buildings, mixed-use buildings, retail, hospitality, fire stations, police stations, city halls, courts, detention facilities, and 911 call centers.

Our electrical team collaborates with the ownership’s IT team to provide phone/data outlets, WAPs, racks, cables trays, antennas, TV outlets, and DAS throughout the buildings we design. We also provide optimum location for IDF & MDF rooms, as well as IT and server rooms throughout the structure. We work with signal providers to bring the signal service to the building and locate their equipment on site, and throughout the building.

Our electrical team collaborates with ownership to determine the most suitable access control system and video surveillance system for their buildings.
