Former University of Texas quarterback Vince Young will try to recapture some of his bygone gridiron glory years in May when he attempts to crack the roster of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Though some veteran CFL sports writers are already speculating whether the Rose Bowl champ has been gone from football too long to be effective, we thought a little advice to Mr. Young would be in order: R Be sure to study up on Ron Lancaster, the most revered Roughrider quarterback ever, a Pennsylvania native who won the CFL championship twice, including as a rookie.

The life partners and owners of Lick Honest Ice Creams were recently featured in the “American Doers” web series produced by People magazine that includes small business success stories from across the nation as well as inspiring tales about artists, athletes and others.

A downtown office building that recently garnered some unwanted headlines when

some ornamental panels fell to the sidewalk may be on the market, according to an insider real estate publication.

Real Estate Alert, distributed by Harrison Scott Publications, recently reported that 5th+Colorado, the 18-story tower at 201 W. Fifth St., is up for sale.

The property is being listed by Eastdil Secured and could fetch in the neighborhood of $120 million, according to Real Estate Alert. The ownership is a joint venture of Lincoln Property Co. and Goldman Sachs & Co. Another entity formed by those two companies recently purchased the Chase Tower a block away at 221 W. How to make big bucks by brewing beer For some, it’s a lifelong dream and a license to print money. But those who jump in now face the likelihood of being drowned in a crowded market. Here’s how the sector has blossomed, and how newcomers are raising the bar.

It’s hard to sell beer in Austin.

An abundance of choices from breweries large and small crowd the shelves of local grocers. In many Austin HEBs, for instance, the available selection of craft beers equals or exceeds what’s offered by the big beer conglomerates.

The growth in selection has been driven by a rapidly expanding number of craft breweries and brewpubs locally, across the state and across the nation.

Consider this: Between 1996 and 2008, nine craft breweries or brewpubs were started in the Austin area, according to Austin Business Journal research.

Then the Great Recession took hold, and for two years no breweries or brewpubs were established. But since 2010, as Austin regained its economic footing, it emerged with a healthy appetite for local beer, and the number of breweries exploded. Between 2010-2016, a whopping 34 new craft breweries or brewpubs were established in the Austin region, with more on the way.

For Amy Cartwright, co-founder and president of Independence Brewing, an Austin craft brewery established in 2004, it was like the floodgates had opened up.

“Live Oak Brewing was around, and they were eight or nine years older than us. There was Real Ale out in Blanco and St. Arnold out in Houston, and they had a little presence here,” recalled Cartwright, thinking about how the Austin’s craft brewery scene has expanded. “It used to be, you’d go into a bar and they’d have two or three local taps, and if you wanted anything else local, you had to get it in a bottle. That’s the biggest transition. Nowadays, even a small bar has six to 10 local taps, and the number of shelves on the grocery store for locals has ballooned since we started.”

When Charles Vallhonrat started his job as executive director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild in 2012, the organization had 40 members. Now, it claims 210, and Vallhonrat estimates that there are 250 craft breweries across Texas. So, with at least 47 active breweries or brewpubs in Austin, is there still room for a newcomer who wants to make his or her mark on the world of suds?

“We think there’s still tremendous room to grow,” said Vallhonrat. “That being said, you still have to compete with shelf space. You will still have to compete for accounts, and your quality has to be very high in order to stand. In the early days — and that’s a hard term to define — you could be a new brewery, and the novelty of being a new brewery allowed the beer to be good, but not necessarily great. Now the beer has to be great from the get-go.”

Beer brewers ask the capitol for help

The Texas Craft Brewers Guild hopes state lawmakers make it a bit easier for breweries to sell beer — as lawmakers have been inclined to do in recent sessions.

Currently, wineries, distilleries and brewpubs are allowed to sell their alcoholic wares for off-site consumption. But manufacturing breweries are only allowed to sell beer for onsite consumption — so if you take a tour of a brewery in Texas, you can’t buy a six-pack to take home with you.

The Texas Craft Brewers Guild wants to change that, arguing such a move would help Texas brewers.

“The primary rationale to enable this is to increase awareness and create beer tourism opportunities, said Charles Vallhonrat, executive director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild.

“Brewer i e s have become great destinations, and having a product Charles that the conVallhonrat sumer can take out with them is a good marketing tool.”

Such proposals have been opposed by retailer groups that fear increased on-site sales could cut into their bottom lines. Amy Cartwright with Independence Brewing Co. said that notion was ridiculous.

“We do not believe this is a mechanism by which people would change their shopping behavior,” said Cartwright, explaining that many of the beers offered in her taproom never make it to retail shelves. “Nine out of 10 times, that same beer, given how limited it is, would not be offered to the stores in the first place.”

On March 10, the deadline for filing bills this session, two companion bills were introduced in the Texas House (HB 3287) and Senate (SB 2083) that would legalize the sale of beer for offpremise consumption at breweries that produce no more than 225,000 barrels per year. Vallhonrat, interviewed as the bills were being drafted, said it was hard to predict if they would gain traction this year. Similar efforts in the past hadn’t gone too far, but he hopes this year will differ.

“I wouldn’t be able to put odds on it,” said Vallhonrat. “The legislative process is supposed to make it more difficult to pass a law than not.”

Is Austin on the right economic track?

It depends on who you are — and how you ask Actions are important when city leaders look to keep Austin’s economy on track. So are words, apparently, as new data shows Austin’s attitudes about the direction of the city’s economic development policies vary from one demographic to the next.

Polling done by the Austin Chamber of Commerce shows policy leaders looking to move the dial on attitudes over affordability need to carefully craft their messages for their audience — and there are several audiences to consider. The Austin Business Journal previously reported on the top-line takeaways from the poll, which showed how Austinites’ support for policies that make it easier to add housing supply in the city changed — depending on how that message was framed. The same poll also split the audience into several demographic and ideological groups to see how opinions on Austin’s economic development and housing policies differed among them.

The pie charts at right illustrate how respondents with differing political ideologies and incomes responded to two questions about Austin’s economic direction. The first asks simply if “things in Austin are going in the right director or have gotten off on the wrong track.” The second question asks if Austin “should plan for more growth or should take steps to stop or slow growth in the region.”

While the charts highlight political and income differences, the report also splits responses into racial and ethnic demographics as well as by tenure living in Austin.

The full report is available at AustinBusinessJournal.com, but broadly speaking minority groups and those who’ve lived in Austin more than 35 years are much more pessimistic about Austin’s economic direction despite the recent boom times. Conversely, whites and people who have lived in Austin for less than 10 years are more optimistic.

Piñata store demolition drama continues amid court tussle

Jordan French, the man at the center of a controversial 2015 demolition of an East Austin piñata store, is suing his own company over allegations that senior managers defrauded the business after they tried to remove French from it.

The company in question is First Page Management LLC, a reputation management company that does business as Statuslabs.com. The lawsuit was filed in February in Travis County District Court by French against Statuslabs and its managers Darius Fischer and Jesse Boskoff. French’s lawsuit seeks damages and attorney fees.

According to the lawsuit, French stayed on with the company, at least on paper, because they allegedly did not follow proper procedures to remove him from the business.

Further, the lawsuit alleges that the Piñata store was demolished to make space for new offices for the company. Statuslabs executives couldn’t be reached for their response.

The suit goes on to allege that Fisher and Boskoff each raised their annual salaries from $170,000 to $400,000 and began to pay themselves a 15 percent bonus of gross company revenue, an amount worth $310,000. French, in the lawsuit, alleges that this is a “thinly veiled attempt to extricate profits” from the company without paying French his share.

Austin fliers to soon get new option for West Coast trips

Whole Foods Market Inc. will soon shift its local catering operations from a centralized facility in Southeast Austin to five area stores, and will transform the empty space into a “test kitchen” for its culinary team — a growing point of emphasis for the Austinbased company amid fierce competition in the grocery business.

Ninety-three employees will lose their jobs May 3 at the centralized catering facility, at 6201 Bolm Road near U.S. Highway 183 and Airport Boulevard, according to a notice filed with the state.

The company expects to hire a “majority” of those catering workers at the five Austinarea retail locations.

Alaska Airlines announced year-round, daily flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Mineta San Jose International Airport beginning Aug. 27.

Flights will leave Austin daily at 3 p.m. and arrive in San Jose at 4:50 p.m. on SkyWest Airlines E175 jets, which can hold up to 76 passengers. They will depart San Jose daily at 8:45 a.m. and arrive in Austin at 2:02 p.m.

That boosts the total of nonstop direct flights out of ABIA to destinations outside Texas to 83.

Southwest Airlines already flies direct from Austin to San Jose.

Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK), which owns Alaska Airlines as well as Horizon Air and Virgin America, had revenue of $5.9 billion.

Steward Geise is the new managing director of asset services for CBRE Group Inc. in Austin.

Call of duty — commercial style Former Marine leads CBRE asset services into new era of strategic growth One of the most unheralded aspects of commercial real estate is property management. It’s also a service area that has become more sophisticated and crucial to investor returns. So please call it “asset services” from here on out — and please meet Steward Geise, the new managing director of asset services for CBRE Group Inc. in Austin.

Geise is heading the team that will manage the next eagerly awaited trophy project to debut soon — 500 W. 2nd Street, the 29-story downtown office tower that will include high-profile tenant Google Inc. Managing the new office property is a natural fit. Developer Trammell Crow Co. is a subsidiary of CBRE, and CBRE also is the listing broker for the property. Plus, CBRE’s Austin office will move into the new glitzy digs this summer.

Crossing different lines of business, Geise said, benefits clients with operating efficiencies and investment acumen.

CBRE’s technology platforms, knowledge of green building systems, global presence and capital markets experience add to the appeal.

“It’s not just about maintaining a safe, comfortable and viable environment. It’s really understanding what the client’s goals are,” said Geise.

Geise brings an intriguing resume to this executive position. He served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, carrying out combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2003-2007.

The 36-year-old hometown hero began his commercial real estate career at CBRE’s Austin office in 2007 with tours of duty in the Houston and New Orleans offices. Geise returned to Austin in January to lead the asset services team.

In addition to the Trammell Crow project, CBRE also manages 100 Congress Ave., another trophy asset which is owned by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in a new partnership with Invesco Ltd. CBRE manages a variety of office properties across Austin and San Antonio, a massive industrial portfolio in El Paso and a growing range of retail assets — a market sector CBRE is eager to embrace. Some properties are brand new. Others are older assets with a unique set of challenges and opportunities.

Geise enjoys the variety of product types and an ever changing daily docket.

Currently, Geise is responsible for 20 million square feet of commercial property and 50 employees. He is settling into his executive position with aplomb.

“Stewart’s background with the U.S. Marine Corps translates into a natural leader who can rally a team around a

common goal and vision,” said Rob Roy Jr., executive managing director of asset services for CBRE’s Southeast U.S. Region.

“His dedication is exemplified by multiple moves to different markets during his tenure with us. He’s well prepared to deliver for our clients in Austin, El Paso and San Antonio.”

How did Geise find his calling to military service — and later commercial real estate?

“I knew from the eighth grade that I wanted to go into the Marines,” Geise said.

“I wanted to deploy and travel around the world. It was a great opportunity.”

He graduated from Austin High School and attended Texas A&M University, earning a degree in political science. While still serving in the Marine Corps, Geise was recruited by CBRE through its military recruitment program.

Many large corporations recruit through military outreach programs, but Geise said CBRE was the clear choice.

“I interviewed with a lot of big companies, and CB just stood out as a unique organization. I could tell that their chain of command resonated with me,” he said.

Geise hopes that as he settles into his new position, he’ll have more time for enjoying Austin’s outdoor life, as well as hunting and deep sea fishing.

Single and living in Tarrytown, Geise said he’s not lonely, given that family are nearby and a canine friend waits at the door.

“I have a Pointer,” he said.

R St. Clair Commercial Realty, headquartered in Redondo Beach, California, purchased the Techni Center Drive portfolio — seven buildings at 5910-6104 Techni Center Drive. The seller was an entity formed by a San Francisco firm. No purchase price was disclosed but records at the Travis Central Appraisal District show the collective 146,000-square-feet valued at about $10.6 million. Ryan Wilson and Matt Fain with ECR handled the off-market transaction. ECR has been retained for leasing the property that is near U.S. Highway 183 and East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. St. Clair Commercial has rebranded the property as “Techni Center Business Park” and plans significant interior and exterior renovations. Live OakGottesman is assigned with the property management.

R Fitness Connection, a health club brand, leased 55,000 square feet at the Shops at Tech Ridge, 13001 N. I-35.

The Houston-based brand currently operates another store at 13776 U.S. Highway 183 near Lakeline Mall. Lance Morris and PJ Kaminer of The Retail Connection represented the landlord, RD Management, and the tenant.

R An unidentified investor purchased Tremont Plaza, a 53,164-square-foot office building at 3001 Bee Cave Road.

ECR handled both sides of the deal with Matt Fain of ECR representing the buyer. No purchase price was disclosed. Records at the Travis Central Appraisal District show the new owner as Padauk LLC Series 2 with an address in Las Vegas, Nevada. The seller, according to the same records, was Hudson Office Partnership III LLC. The property sits on nearly 5.7 acres and was built in 1984. It was most recently valued for tax purposes at $9,658,967.

R A unidentified Houston investor purchased nearly four acres at the northeast corner of State Highway 71 and Covered Bridge Drive in far Southwest Austin. Marshall Durrett of Cushman & Wakefield represented the seller and the buyers were selfrepresented. Retail is planned.

R A Giddings, Texas-based investor purchased 2 acres of land at the southeast corner of Elroy and McAngus roads adjacent to the Circuit of The Americas racetrack. White Lodging Services Inc. continues its domination of Austin’s hotel market with the planned construction of two major hotels — the Marriott Cesar Chavez Hotel downtown and the Autograph Collection/AC Hotel by Marriott near the West Campus neighborhood of the University of Texas. The latter will displace a McDonald’s restaurant, according to demolition permits filed with the city.

The Marriott Cesar Chavez will be built at 304 E. Cesar Chavez St. Valued at $150 million, according to filings at the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, the hotel will include 613 rooms across the street from the Austin Convention Center. The Autograph hybrid hotel is a new brand for Austin. The proposed construction site at 414 W. Martin Luther King Blvd. currently is occupied by a popular McDonald’s restaurant. Valued at $70 million, according to TDLR, the hotel will have 352 rooms. Public records show White Lodging plans to begin construction on both projects in May. HKS Inc., headquartered in Dallas, is the architect on both projects. Renderings are not available, said a White Lodging spokeswoman, because revisions are in the works. General contractor Hunt Construction Group Inc., which is building the $350 million Fairmont convention center hotel that is scheduled to open this summer, has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking an injunction against one of its major subcontractors on the project — Cobb Mechanical Contractors Inc. — and Liberty Mutual Insurance Co, which was the underwriter of a performance bond. Hunt alleges that Cobb fell behind schedule, failed to hire the necessary workers to get back on schedule and performed unacceptable work. But the main point of the complex suit is to stave off a demand for arbitration, which Cobb submitted to the American Arbitration Association earlier this year. Hunt Construction maintains that Cobb has no right to arbitration based on the construction contract the two entities signed in 2015. A surprising detail is exposed in the lawsuit — construction on the 37-story hotel came to a near standstill last summer. Even so, developer Manchester Financial Group Austin said the luxury hotel will open on schedule in August.

How Medici aims to disrupt health care

The experienced entrepreneur launched the app for his fledgling Austin-based company, Medici Technologies LLC, that day to coincide with the start of this year’s South by Southwest conference and festival. Consumers can use the app to R QUOTE

text physicians on call who can instantly answer concerns, for a fee of $25, similar to an office visit co-pay. Users also have the option of adding their own doctors to the app and inviting them to participate.

“We’re going to be as well-known as Uber,” Phillips, chiropractor-turnedstartup guru, said without averting his eyes or breaking a smile during an interview at his downtown office. “Health

care is desperate for change. We have an incredible product, an amazing group of investors, a very smart team and an enormous market.”

He also didn’t shy away from the possibility that this 10-day period could be Medici’s “Twitter moment.” The socialmedia site based in California mushroomed into prominence during SXSW 2007.

“We’re going to be a $10 billion company,” predicted the South African native, 42, whose wife Jade was formerly “Thunder” on the South African version of the “American Gladiators” reality TV show.

“The only question is whether that happens in two years or four years. This is a ginormous opportunity. It’s really about building a new health care ecosystem.”

The startup, which began operating in stealth mode in April 2016, spent about $250,000 to introduce Medici at SXSW, said Phillips, who has founded two other health care companies.

By late November 2016, the company had raised about $32.2 million from more than 10 investors — and had one of the biggest Austin-area capital raises during 2016. Phillips doesn’t plan to raise more funds until October, he said.

The company will move its 30 employees on April 1 to new offices on the 25th floor of the Bank of America financial center at 515 Congress Ave. from its current digs at the WeWork complex across the street at 600 Congress Avenue.

“Right now, we’re focused on execution,” said Phillips, who wants to be the Elon Musk of health care. “We’re focused on patients and doctors using the app to solve problems. We want to know what people value, what they choose and how they choose. Then we’ll know what we have to do.”

INSITOME INC. Unlike other companies working in the realm of genetics, this Austin startup allows customers to access their DNA from the cloud repeatedly. Spencer Wells, the company’s founder and CEO, and co-founder Neeraj Rao, plan to introduce Insitome’s first app during this year’s second quarter. The app will focus on customers’ ancestries. Wells is a geneticist and anthropologist who worked for more than a decade as an explorer-inresidence at the National Geographic Society. The eight-employee company came out of stealth mode March 13 during South by Southwest. It has raised about $3 million to date.

Austin cancer-fighting startup rejoins public company it spun out from in 2012 Pelican Therapeutics Inc., which last year received a $15.2 million state grant to develop cancer-fighting immunotherapy treatments, has rejoined the publicly traded company that it spun out from more than four years ago.

Durham, North Carolina-based Heat Biologics Inc. (Nasdaq: HTBX) has agreed to buy a controlling stake in Austin-based Pelican for cash and stock in a deal valued at about $1.5 million.

More than 75 percent of Pelican shareholders have signed onto the agreement, which would pay them as much as $500,000 in cash and about 1.3 million shares of Heat restricted common stock, representing a roughly 5 percent stake in the company.

After the acquisition, Heat would own 80 percent of Pelican Therapeutics, which would remain in Austin.

In May 2016, Pelican received a $15.2 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.

That figured prominently into Heat executives’ decision — the grant “should enable the company to advance multiple prod-

ucts through preclinical development and at least one program through a 70-patient Phase 1 clinical trial,” according to a March 8 announcement.

At the time of the CPRIT grant, Pelican’s only employees were CEO Josiah Hornblower, and Dr. Taylor Schreiber, director and chairman of its scientific advisory board, but Hornblower said the company planned to add 20 employees within three years.

Pelican expects to file an investigational new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2017 for its lead product, a T cell co-stimulator.

Heat Biologics spun out Pelican in 2012 — at the time, the parent company was focused on cell-based treatments and executives decided Pelican could better advance its programs as a standalone business.

“We didn’t have the resources at the time ... to focus on the development of two technologies, so we spun out the Pelican technology,” Heat Biologics CEO Jeff Wolf told the Triangle Business Journal.

Heat Biologics, which went public in 2013, focuses on cutting-edge immunotherapy treatments, which use the body’s own immune system to fight cancer — it has treatments in Phase 1b and Phase 2 trials.

The company also has experience in infectious diseases: a subsidiary, Zolovax Inc., is working on a vaccine for the Zika virus in conjunction with the University of Miami.

Heat Biologics is operating in a pre-revenue stage, which is common for pharmaceutical and biotech companies as they spend heavily on research and development while their treatments work their way through regulatory approval.

It reported a $21 million operating loss in 2015, with $2.6 million spent on R&D. Heat’s shares were trading at about 89 cents on March 14, basically flat since the start of the year.

Capping damages in medical malpractice lawsuits was a cornerstone of thenGov. Rick Perry’s agenda when he came into office. This session, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, in particular, has made curtailing litigation on hailstorm damage a priority through the introduction of Senate Bill 10, which remains pending in committee. If approved, it will head to the floor of the Senate.

Litigation over hailstorm claims has skyrocketed over the last several years due to a handful of attorneys who are doing nothing more than padding their pockets, Patrick said.

Lawyers take away profits, he said, while homeowners and business owners face increased premiums, higher deductibles and fewer choices because of insurance companies going out of business.

“One of the hallmarks of our great economy over the last 10 to 15 years has been lawsuit reform,” Patrick said. “We’ve ended frivolous lawsuits against business and doctors, but hailstorms? The lawyers found another way to try to make a buck, and that hurts everyone.”

homeowner’s insurance as a direct result of litigation. Another seven companies have reduced, limited or stopped writing policies. Litigated claims by what TLR calls “storm chasers” has turned an average settlement into an almost two-year process.

But lawyers and their allies are striking back aggressively at those claims. Texas Watch, which considers itself a consumer advocacy group on insurance, calls the hailstorm bill a crisis fabricated by TLR to rob people of their rights.

The Texas Department of Insurance never mentioned a crisis in its biennial report, and plenty of bills are on the books to dismiss unsupported lawsuits, said Texas Watch Executive Director Ware Wendell.

“The bill does nothing to distinguish between good claims and bad claims,” Wendell said. “We have strong, balanced laws today to punish bad actors. The laws need to be enforced, not weakened, which will only encourage more abuse by insurance companies.”

Sen. Kelly Hancock, R-North Richland Hills, is chairing Senate Business & Commerce for the first time this session, where issues from hailstorm tort reform to statewide regulation of ridesharing and shortterm rentals have landed, along with title insurance reform.

In early March, Hancock sent a strong message to the Texas Trial Lawyers Association during a hearing on SB 10. Hancock indicated he was willing to compromise on some portions of the legislation, but he wasn’t going to be pushed around by the lobby.

“Let me be clear,” Hancock said. “When we started this process, in no way did I think — with a 1,400-percent increase in litigation and the financial benefit of that — we were going to get to a point where everybody agreed upon it,” Hancock said.

“There’s way too much money involved with a 1,400-percent increase for me to think that somebody’s pocketbook was not going to be impacted significantly. I anticipated there would be those in opposition to this.”

The Texas Trial Lawyers Association said it will continue to be available to amend the bill, although Hancock accused them of stacking the witness testimony.

The organization argues Texas is a severe weather state, the overall impact of litigation on premiums has been minor, and that insurance companies continue to close claims without payment.

“SB 10 is a flawed piece of legislation.

That’s why an ever-increasing chorus of industry, small businesses, churches, homeowners and many others are opposing the bill,” said TTLA President Lin McCraw.

“The bill as filed punishes all policyholders, benefits foreign insurance companies over Texas businesses and homeowners, slashes slow-pay penalties, and burdens property owners with additional costly, bureaucratic notice requirements.”

How a glass wall helped my startup retain its collaborative culture

The great divide: ShippingEasy’s glass wall helped the company’s employees feel less isolated — and spawned more socialization in the break room.

For most of my career, I worked at online businesses where sales and marketing dominated. They were the key players, and I was accustomed to an environment with a frenetic pace and music pumping to create energy that often resulted in sales.

When I took over running ShippingEasy Inc., I developed a similar culture but quickly realized that high-energy vibe did not sit well with employees who were coding and hold an enormous amount of data in their heads. It’s a challenge many business owners and key executives face: How to build a work culture that marries different departments in order for the entire machine to run smoothly and effectively.

It started fairly innocuously. Five salespeople dialing prospects, overcoming the rejection with music, ping pong, and a loud bell that signaled every new customer. Across the room were four engineers with headphones rebuilding the product, trying to ignore the enormous distraction that was their sales team. Working across these departments, I saw the frustration and tension grow as Top 40 music looped endlessly.

We needed to physically do something to the office to provide what the entire team needed: both energy and quiet to think. ShippingEasy purchased a $3,000 green, insulated curtain designed to absorb the music and separate the space.

That bought us three months, because it didn’t immediately solve the problem,

considering sales needed the volume on 10, and the curtain could only block out so much.

The next investment was a second office on the same floor where the engineers created a space and culture more conducive to their craft. Though we eliminated the noise issue, the extra office produced another challenge. As a team, we came together weekly to share wins, losses and business progress. But, now we had two teams with a common goal living separate lives. We made it work as best as we could, but it wasn’t ideal. There wasn’t enough camaraderie, and while we planned gatherings, there wasn’t the spontaneous, water-cooler conversations that can lead to unexpected ideas and exponential thinking.

Fortify relationships Last year, profitability and the company’s acquisition led to an entirely new space and new options. There was unanimous support for marrying the teams and building unity beyond meetings and planned gatherings. Enter the Glass Wall.

The 27 ½ foot-long, 8 ½ foot-tall glass wall afforded consolidation while preserving noise and light preferences. We might work separately, but we have significant shared space where relationships are fortified, conversations trigger marketing investments, and adoption blockers become joint problems.

I’m happy to report it worked. The kitchen and breakroom now work over-

time, and serve as the chief spots where team members socialize and get to know each other again. The espresso machine taught us that we have four former Katie May baristas and more coffee snobs than vegetarians. Who knew?

Our philosophy is that connections are important to collaboration, which is crucial to success. But forcing those connections sucks. The glass wall enables greater sympathy and transparency, and ultimately means we get to live together. No more separate lives. We’re back together, talking about our day and collaborating on our issues and opportunities, all over a proper coffee influenced by baristas in between sales and support calls. Our team is stronger, our opportunities feel bigger and our issues feel smaller. More people talking and thinking in shared spaces have lead to something else — better business outcomes.

CEOs say technology, medicine convergence offers huge upside Medical students who don’t learn at least some computer coding will be at a serious disadvantage in the future.

Such is nature of the close and deepening Ginni Rometty ties between the health care sector and the technology world.

That’s according to Ginni Rometty, CEO of International Business Machines Corp. She spoke March 13 with Alex Gorsky, CEO of health care conglomerate Johnson & Johnson, in a South by Southwest discussion moderated by Clay Johnston, dean of the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

“We are moving toward a world where technology will intersect with every job,” Rometty said.

The two CEOs discussed the myriad technologies disrupting health care, from artificial intelligence to the smartphone.

IBM (NYSE: IBM) enables cutting-edge AI research in health care with its Watson platform, a computer system that gained a measure of fame for competing on TV quiz show “Jeopardy!” in 2011, Rometty said.

“We’re doing our piece but what we’re providing is a platform for lots of other people and entrepreneurs to use those tools to go and create new things,” Rometty said.

The IBM CEO said cognitive computing like Watson, blockchain technology (the technological foundation of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies) and internet-ofthings connected devices have the most potential to change health care.

The rapid pace of technological innovative means big corporations such as Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) must invest in early-stage technology, even when it isn’t yet profitable. The company has partnered with Alphabet Inc. on a robotic surgery venture, which was spun off in 2015 as Verb Surgical.

The company aims to improve surgery and make it more widely available using robots and artificial intelligence programs.

Gorsky said he recently tested some of Verb’s technology, and learned within about five minutes how to operate robot surgical tools that roughly mimicked minimally invasive surgery.

Other innovations will develop outside the enterprise environment but can then be scaled up when they land with large customers. Rometty said IBM uses the app of Colorado-based startup CafeWell, which rewards users for making healthy choices. It also cuts down on the $1 billion or so IBM spends each year on employee health care, she said.

ail Vittori is one of those people who is accomplishing great things but doesn’t get much ink.

Vittori is considered an international authority on green energy systems. She served as chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council, the organization that is largely responsible for cajoling developers and public entities to build structures and neighborhoods that are sensitive to energy conservation, material recycling and resource management in general.

She received major national recognition as the 2015 Hanley Award Winner for her accomplishments in the green building field and she has been profiled in Builder magazine, a major trade publication.

Vittori has a long and illustrious history locally that includes spearheading Austin Energy’s Green Building Program.

It was the only sustainable building program in the U.S. to be featured at the United Nation’s Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero in 1992.

“That was what catapulted Austin to the global stage” in sustainability, Vittori said.

The current LEED certified building program administered through the USGBC — considered the industry standard — was inspired by the Austin Green Building program.

She’s come a long way since arriving here in 1977, leaving behind a wellentrenched Boston family. Her father

began his career in military intelligence but eventually became a real estate investor and developer.

A trip to visit friends in Austin in 1975 elicited a desire to do something really offbeat — move far away from the refined culture of the Northeast to the bold and brash cultural wonderland of Texas.

“I’m not sure I thought I’d actually stay,” Vittori said.

To make ends meet she worked as a cocktail waitress and then found a job at a law firm until a pivotal decision changed the course of her life.

The newly formed Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a nonprofit education, research and demonstration organization, held an open house. Vittori and a friend decided to check it out.

“I was very intrigued with what I saw that first visit,” she said.

So much so that she enrolled in a class about green building and sustainability at the University of Texas.

“I realized I could see myself doing this for a very long time,” Vittori said.

The city of Austin hired her to be an energy research specialist — where, ironically, she was banished to a freezing basement cubicle. Despite the discomfort, she loved it.

“The job was a great window into work that was really community based,” Vittori said.

Retailers fear proposal in D.C. Texas is known for its friendliness, delicious food, honesty, and of course, that everything is bigger and better in the Lone Star State. The grocery industry is George Kelemen no different. Grocers invest in the communities they serve, ensuring quality and affordable food is readily available while competing openly in a large industry every day to create good jobs and boost our state’s economy.

Texas retailers strive to keep their prices low by seeking out efficiencies in every aspect of their business and constantly negotiating lower costs. One area where they have never been able to negotiate their costs is in accepting credit and debit cards. U.S. merchants pay nearly $80 billion annually to the banks and credit card companies in hidden acceptance fees, which is higher than anywhere else in the world. These hidden fees have stifled growth, driven up the costs of consumer goods and hurt small businesses for long enough.

In 2010, American consumers and merchants earned a hard fought victory over escalating, uncontrollable hidden fees with the inclusion of the debit reform measures in the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. These reforms

brought transparency and competition into a market where fees were traditionally set collectively behind closed doors and without regard to the costs imposed on American consumers and Main Street retailers. For the first time small businesses can now see and know exactly how much they will be charged for a debit transaction from one of the covered institutions. This was an essential first step to move America’s electronic payments system toward a truly open and free market.

Unfortunately, these pro-competition reforms are now under assault in Washington. Texas’ own Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling, chairman of the Financial Services Committee, is expected to introduce legislation that would repeal Wall Street reforms, along with the successful debit and swipe-fee reforms.

The mega-banks are spending millions of dollars to convince Congress that competition is bad for business and should be repealed. Opponents of competition argue that small banks and credit unions have been harmed by these reforms. However, the argument has a giant hole in it and the facts tell a much different story.

Just last year the Federal Reserve studied how the small banks that were exempt from the regulations, those under $10 billion in assets, were faring under the reforms. The study concluded that “…the volume of transactions conducted with cards issued by exempt banks grew faster than it did for large banks.” The report further found that interchange revenue

for exempt banks continued to rise for small banks. The study concluded that “… the evidence does not support the claim that competitive forces have effectively imposed the interchange fee ceiling on small banks…”

At home here in Texas, our local credit unions have also been able to capitalize on their ability to compete with the giant banks, which has been good for consumers.

The facts are clear: Not only have the reforms worked, but 98 percent of banks and credit unions that were not covered by them have actually been able to use the debit reforms to their advantage. It is remarkable that at a time when Congress should be focusing on fostering competition, growing our economy and enabling job creation they are instead considering repealing reforms that have had the opposite effect.

Congress needs to reject this blatant assault on Main Street Texas businesses and instead stand up for competition and our job creators. Texas retailers urge Chairman Hensarling to keep debit and swipe-fee reforms that have proven to work and include them as part of the Choice Act; an otherwise favorable effort to reform our nation’s financial services industry.

HB 2861 will put Texans in fast lane we do to alleviate congestion — and get the kids to school on time and make a lastminute meeting across town?

One solution can be found in the private sector, specifically in leveraging the finances and innovations that business can provide in partnership with state and local governments.

Public-private partnerships, or P3s, have already proven successful in the development of several Texas roads. Take, for instance, the $2.6 billion LBJ Express in North Dallas. This project was made possible by a P3 that allowed the state to leverage its funds to complete one of the most complex highway reconstruction corridors in the nation. This 13.3-mile, state-of-the-art highway opened in September 2015 three months ahead of schedule and 10 years faster than a traditionally built project.

U.S. News & World Report recently gave Texas high marks for our economy and the fiscal stability of state government. All positive — except it wasn’t. The same Chris Wallace report pointed to the worsening— and in some cases, worst-in-the-nation— commutes in some Texas cities. Overall, Texas ranked 49 in the report’s infrastructure category. As anyone who drives can attest, mind-numbing traffic congestion is now the norm in many Texas communities. Adding to that misery: Relief isn’t in the cards any time soon, given limited tax dollars at all levels of government.

So, where does that leave us? What can

Not only is the LBJ Express providing drivers with additional mobility solutions, but it has also attracted new development along the corridor.

We’ve seen similar results with another P3 roadway: the North Tarrant Express along I-820 and Airport Freeway in Northeast Tarrant County. During construction, the North Tarrant Express employed more than 2,000 Texans working for more than 100 Texas companies.

Since opening in 2014, nine months ahead of schedule, the North Tarrant Express has seen an overall increase in traffic of nearly 40 percent with congestion relief of approximately 70 percent and increased speeds of 10 percent or better.

Similar P3 projects are being con-

sidered throughout the state and one is already underway in Houston.

These projects serve as models for how P3s for highway development can and should work. By capitalizing on the private sector’s willingness to invest in innovative solutions to get Texans moving again, the state can leverage its tax dollars to provide needed roadways.

Thankfully, Texas legislators have filed a number of proposals this session to allow the private sector to continue to work to enhance Texas mobility. One such measure, House Bill 2861 by state Rep. Larry Phillips, would authorize P3s for specific projects across the state.

Texas Association of Business asks all Texas legislators to support HB 2861 and similar measures to help build roads, leveraging private dollars where possible.

With any luck, the next time U.S. News & World Report issues its state rankings, Texas will get top marks for infrastructure.
