As our world becomes more digitally connected, the value of cybersecurity cannot be stressed. With the rise of cyber risks such as hacking, identity theft, and data breaches, we must prioritise the security of our personal and company data.

Cyber-attacks can come from anywhere in today's globe, and anyone can be a target. Cybercrime affects everyone, from people to small enterprises to major corporations. A single cyber assault can be disastrous, with potential outcomes ranging from financial loss to reputational damage.

To defend ourselves and our company from cyber threats, we must take proactive measures to improve our cybersecurity. This involves maintaining current on the latest threats and vulnerabilities, establishing strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and backing up our data on a regular basis.

Businesses should also invest in strong cybersecurity measures like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption. It is also critical to offer staff with regular cybersecurity training to ensure that they are aware of the risks and know how to respond in the event of an attack.

However, cybersecurity is the responsibility of governments and policymakers as well as individuals and enterprises. Governments must collaborate to develop rules and regulations that encourage cybersecurity and hold organisations accountable.

As we become more reliant on technology in our daily lives, the necessity for solid cybersecurity measures will only grow. It is up to all of us to prioritise the protection of our personal and business data and collaborate to create a safer, more secure digital environment.

THE RISE OF RANSOMWARE ATTACKS

How Cybercriminals are exploiting businesses

Ransomware assaults have become a common and extremely profitable kind of cybercrime in recent years, posing a substantial threat to organisations, individuals, and even governments all around the world. Ransomware is a sort of malicious software that encrypts data or systems on a victim's computer or network, making them unavailable until the cybercriminals are paid a ransom. With the rising reliance on digital technology and the increasing value of data, fraudsters have turned to ransomware assaults to extort money from their victims. In this essay, we will look at the rise of ransomware attacks, how cybercriminals benefit from businesses and individuals, and how these assaults affect our society.

EVOLUTION OF RANSOMWARE ATTACK

Ransomware assaults have been around since the late 1980s, but they have changed dramatically over the years to become more sophisticated and profitable. The first known ransomware assault, dubbed the "AIDS Trojan," was found in 1989 and was primitive in comparison to modern ransomware. It propagated by infected floppy discs and displayed a message saying that the victim's files had been encrypted and could only be decrypted by sending a payment to a Panama P.O. box. The ransom was little, and the attack was limited in scope, but it signalled the beginning of a new form of cyber threat.

Ransomware attacks have become more complex over time, extorting money from victims by utilising advanced encryption techniques, social engineering tactics, and anonymous payment mechanisms such as Bitcoin. Ransomware attacks are now

7 | BIZEMAG.COM

highly organised and frequently carried out by professional cybercriminal organisations with advanced tools, strategies, and resources. Individuals, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), large firms, healthcare organisations, educational institutions, government agencies, and even vital infrastructure are all targets for these groups.

RANSOMWARE ATTACKS AND THEIR MECHANISMS

Ransomware assaults often follow a similar pattern, while methods and strategies utilised by various cybercriminal gangs may change. A high-level description of the typical mechanisms of a ransomware assault follows:

1. INITIAL INFECTION:

Ransomware generally infiltrates a victim's system via phishing emails, malvertisements (malicious advertisement), exploit kits, drive-by downloads, or social engineering attacks. Once infected, the ransomware begins to spread laterally across the victim's network, encrypting as many files and computers as possible.

2. FILE ENCRYPTION: Once the ransomware has gained access to the victim's files, it encrypts them with strong encryption techniques, rendering them unreadable without a decryption key. The victim is then shown a ran-

som note, which usually takes the shape of a pop-up window or a text file and offers instructions on how to pay the ransom and acquire the decryption key.

3. RANSOM DEMAND: The ransom message will normally include the ransom amount, payment instructions, and a payment date. Depending on the target and the perceived value of the material, the ransom cost might range from a few hundred dollars to millions of dollars. Payment is typically requested in the form of cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, which provides a high level of anonymity.

4. EXTORTION STRATEGIES: Cybercriminals frequently use various extortion strategies to raise the pressure on the victim to pay the ransom. Threatening to delete or publish the victim's data if the ransom is not paid, setting deadlines with growing ransom amounts, or even contacting the victim's customers or partners to publicise the breach and harm the victim's reputation are all examples of such tactics.

5. DECRYPTION KEY: Once the ransom has been paid, the cybercriminals may give the victim with a decryption key or programme

to unlock the encrypted files. However, there is no guarantee that the decryption key will be delivered or that all of the files will be successfully decrypted. In certain circumstances, victims pay the ransom but do not receive the decryption key, or the operation fails.

THE IMPACT OF RANSOMWARE ATTACKS

Ransomware attacks can have severe and far-reaching consequences for businesses, individuals, and society as a whole. The financial impact of ransomware attacks is often significant, with

cybercriminals demanding hefty ransoms that can range from thousands to millions of dollars. Businesses, especially SMBs, may struggle to afford such payments, leading to financial losses, reputational damage, and even bankruptcy. Additionally, the costs associated with investigating and remediating the attack, as well as implementing stronger security measures, can further strain the resources of affected organizations.

Beyond the financial impact, ransomware attacks can disrupt critical business operations, leading to loss of productivity, customer trust, and competitive advantage. For

example, ransomware attacks against healthcare organizations can disrupt patient care, potentially endangering lives. Attacks against government agencies can compromise sensitive data and disrupt essential services, affecting citizens' trust and confidence in their government. Ransomware attacks against individuals can result in personal data loss, identity theft, and emotional distress.

Ransomware attacks also highlight the ethical dilemma of paying ransoms to cybercriminals. While some victims may feel compelled to pay the ransom to regain access to their encrypted data,

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 8 9 | BIZEMAG.COM

this can potentially fuel the ransomware economy and incentivize cybercriminals to continue their malicious activities. Moreover, paying the ransom offers no guarantee that the cybercriminals will honour their promise and provide the decryption key. It also encourages the use of ransomware as a profitable business model for cybercriminals, leading to more attacks and increased sophistication.

Furthermore, ransomware attacks can have broader societal implications. They can undermine trust in digital technologies and the ability to protect data, leading to a loss

of confidence in online transactions and communication. They can also highlight the vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure, such as transportation systems, energy grids, and healthcare facilities, potentially posing risks to public safety and national security. The increasing interconnectedness of our digital world amplifies the potential impact of ransomware attacks, making them a significant concern for society as a whole.

WHY RANSOMWARE ATTACKS ARE ON THE RISE

Several factors have contrib-

uted to the rise of ransomware attacks as a preferred method for cybercriminals to exploit businesses and individuals for profit:

1. Financial Motives: Ransomware attacks are financially motivated, with cybercriminals seeking to extort money from victims in exchange for the decryption key. The potential for significant financial gain, especially with the use of cryptocurrencies that offer anonymity, has made ransomware attacks attractive to cybercriminals.

2. Ease of Deployment: Ransomware is relatively easy to deploy compared to other forms of cyber-attacks. Cybercriminals can purchase ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) from the dark web, which provides them with pre-built ransomware kits that can be customized and used with minimal technical expertise. This has lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, enabling them to carry out ransomware attacks on a large scale.

3. Exploitation of Vulnerabilities: Ransomware attacks often exploit vulnerabilities in software, hardware, or human behaviours. Cybercriminals take advantage of unpatched systems, weak passwords, lack of employee awareness, and other vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access and deploy ransomware.

4. Increasing Value of Data:

With the proliferation of digital data and the increasing reliance on it for business operations, the value of data has skyrocketed. Cybercriminals recognize this value and use ransom

NOTABLE RANSOMWARE ATTACK

One notable ransomware attack that had significant consequences was the "WannaCry" attack that occurred in May 2017. This attack targeted Windows-based systems and quickly spread to over 150 countries, affecting businesses, government organizations, and individuals alike.

The WannaCry attack exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows operating systems, known as Eternal Blue, which had been previously leaked by the hacking group called "Shadow Brokers." The ransomware encrypted files on infected systems and demanded a ransom in Bitcoin for their release. The attack demanded a ransom of $300 per infected system, with the amount doubling if not paid within a certain timeframe.

The impact of the WannaCry attack was widespread and severe. It caused widespread disruption to critical infrastructure, including healthcare systems, transportation networks, and government agencies. In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) was particularly hard hit, with over 200,000 appointments and operations cancelled, and patient data inaccessible. This resulted in delays in patient care, and in some cases, patients being turned away from hospitals. The attack also affected major companies such as FedEx, Telefonica, and Renault, disrupting their operations and causing financial losses.

The WannaCry attack highlighted the vulnerabilities in outdated and unpatched systems, as the attack exploited a known vulnerability for which a patch had been released by Microsoft months before the attack. Many affected organizations had not implemented the necessary security updates, leaving their systems exposed to the attack.

The global economic impact of the WannaCry attack was estimated to be in the billions of dollars, including the cost of ransom payments, lost productivity, IT recovery efforts, and reputational damage. It also raised concerns about the potential for cybercriminals to disrupt critical infrastructure and essential services, and the need for organizations to prioritize cybersecurity measures to prevent and mitigate such attacks.

In response to the WannaCry attack, governments, organizations, and cybersecurity experts around the world took urgent steps to contain the attack, develop and implement security patches, and raise awareness about the importance of regular system updates and robust cybersecurity measures. It also highlighted the need for organizations to have robust data backup and recovery plans in place, as paying the ransom is not always a guaranteed solution and can further incentivize cybercriminals to continue their malicious activities.

The WannaCry attack served as a wake-up call for the global cybersecurity community and underscored the evolving and escalating threat posed by ransomware attacks. It highlighted the need for continuous vigilance, proactive security measures, and regular patching and updates to protect against such attacks and mitigate their potential impact. It also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness and education among employees and individuals to prevent falling victim to ransomware attacks and other forms of cyber threats.

RECENT RANSOM ATTACK

One recent example of a ransomware attack is the attack on the Colonial Pipeline in May 2021, which is one of the largest fuel pipeline operators in the United States. The attack disrupted the operations of the pipeline, which supplies fuel to the East Coast of the United States, resulting in fuel shortages and price increases in some regions. The attackers, reportedly affiliated with the Dark Side ransomware group, demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin to re-

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 10 11 | BIZEMAG.COM

store access to the encrypted data and systems. The incident caused widespread concern about the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure to cyber-attacks and highlighted the potential impact of ransomware attacks on essential services and the economy.

Another recent ransomware attack is the attack on the software company Kaseya in July 2021. Kaseya provides IT management and remote monitoring services to businesses, and the attack affected its VSA software, which is

widely used by managed service providers (MSPs) to manage and monitor their clients' IT systems. The attack resulted in the encryption of data on the systems of numerous Kaseya's clients, including small and medium-sized businesses. The attackers, allegedly belonging to the REvil ransomware group, demanded a multi-million-dollar ransom payment in Bitcoin for the release of the encrypted data.

These are just a few examples of the numerous ransomware

attacks that have occurred in recent years. Ransomware attacks continue to evolve in sophistication and are often carried out by organized cybercriminal groups or nation-state actors, targeting businesses, government organizations, healthcare providers, and individuals alike. The impact of ransomware attacks can be severe, resulting in financial losses, operational disruptions, reputational damage, and potential legal and regulatory consequences.

DIGITAL TRUST IN THE AGE OF DATA PRIVACY: INSIGHTS & BEST PRACTICES

Summary: Faith is becoming increasingly important as more and more activities are conducted online, from banking and shopping to communication and social networking. Without digital trust, users are less likely to engage in online activities. They may be hesitant to share their personal information, which can limit the growth and development of digital economies. In this article, Dr. Mythili Kolluru, a strategy consultant & professor who has written on 4IR, Metaverse, and the Internet of Behavior, reveals the nuances of digital trust for organizations to navigate their competitive advantage in a continuously evolving digital business landscape.

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 12 13 | BIZEMAG.COM

INTRODUCTION

Digital trust is a relatively new concept that has gained more attention in recent years due to the increasing importance of digital technologies in our daily lives. In a survey conducted by PwC in 2019, 58% of respondents indicated they were concerned about data privacy and cybersecurity, indicating a growing awareness of the importance of trust in the digital age. Similarly, a survey conducted by Edelman in 2020 found that trust in technology was at an all-time high, with 76% of respondents indicating that technology has positively impacted their lives. Digital trust refers to the confidence and reliability that individuals, organizations, and systems have in the security, privacy, and authenticity of digital transactions, communications, and interactions. It is built on data security, privacy protection, and transparency, where users can trust that their data and information are handled responsibly and securely.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of digital trust for individuals, organizations, and governments. While some countries have made significant progress in building digital trust, others have lagged. According to the latest research and surveys, countries like Denmark, Finland, and Norway are leading the way in digital trust. These countries have established solid legal frameworks for data protection, investing in digital infrastructure, and implementing effective cybersecurity measures. They have also tried to promote transparency, user control, and responsible use of data.On the other hand, countries such as Russia, China, and Brazil have been identified as lagging in digital trust. These countries have been criticized for their lack of transparency, weak legal protections, and limited investments in cybersecurity. As digital technologies continue transforming the global economy and society, digital trust will likely become an increasingly important factor in international competitiveness and cooperation.

One of the most important but least known facts about digital trust is that it is not just about technology but also human behavior and organizational culture. While technology is critical in ensuring digital trust, more is needed. Human factors such as awareness, training, and behavior can significantly impact digital confidence. For example, an organization may invest heavily in state-of-the-art security technology to protect its digital assets. Still, if its employees are not trained to identify and respond to security threats, technology alone will not be enough to ensure digital trust.

Similarly, an organization may have the most advanced privacy policies and procedures. However, if employees do not understand or value privacy, the organization may still be at risk of data breaches or other privacy violations. Therefore, digital trust requires a holistic approach considering technological and human factors and a culture of security and privacy embedded throughout the organization.

Research insights

A growing body of research suggests a positive association between digital trust

and organizational performance. Some studies have indicated a positive correlation between digital trust and financial performance. For example, a survey by PwC found that organizations prioritizing cybersecurity and digital trust are more likely to achieve revenue growth and profitability. However, it should be noted that the relationship between digital trust and organizational performance is complex and can depend on factors such as the industry, the organization's size, and the nature of its operations.

Digital trust can enhance organizational performance in several ways:

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 14 15 | BIZEMAG.COM

• Digital trust can build stronger relationships between customers and organizations. When customers trust an organization to protect their data and provide secure online transactions, they are more likely to remain loyal to that organization.

• Organizations perceived as trustworthy digitally will likely enjoy a better reputation and brand image, leading to increased customer engagement and sales.

• Strong digital trust can help organizations manage risks associated with data breaches and cyber-attacks. Organizations that have invested in robust cybersecurity measures are less likely to experience data breaches and associated reputational damage.

• Organizations that are perceived as trustworthy are more likely to be able to attract and retain talent leading to increased innovation and competitiveness.

Digital trust is becoming increasingly important in our society as more and more of our personal information and transactions are conducted online. However, several critical ethical issues associated with digital trust must be addressed. One of the biggest challenges is the constantly evolving threat landscape as technology advances. There is also a need for a universally recognized digital trust standard widely accepted across industries and regions. Digital systems and networks' increasing complexity and interconnectedness can also pose a challenge. Ethical issues related to digital trust include:

• The privacy of personal information

• Fair and transparent use of AI and machine learning algorithms

• Addressing the digital divide

• Cybersecurity Companies that collect and store personal data are morally obligated to protect it, and AI and machine learning algorithms should be used fairly and transparently. Addressing these critical ethical issues is essential for building a trustworthy digital environment that benefits everyone.

Let's learn from corporate illustrations

Several companies are considered leaders in digital trust and can be used as benchmarks.

• Apple has established a reputation for security and privacy by using strong encryption and strict security measures for its devices and services. The company also strongly focuses on transparency, with clear privacy policies and regular reports on government requests for user data.

PayPal's focus on security, transparency, user control, and responsible AI use has helped it build trust among its users and maintain its reputation as a leading digital payment platform. Overall, these companies have all demonstrated a commitment to digital trust and have implemented measures to protect user data and transactions, provide transparency and control over user data, and establish a reputation for reliability and safety. No two companies are alike; different companies operate in various industries with distinct business models, so their strategies for establishing digital trust will differ.A company's digital trust strategy should align with its overall business strategy and goals, be guided by industry best practices and regulatory requirements, consider its customers' and stakeholders' needs and expectations, and address technology's potential risks and threats.

Strategies organizations can implement to establish a reputation as a reliable and trustworthy digital partner.

• Organizations should be transparent about their data collection and usage policies. They should also implement secure data storage and processing practices to protect their customers' personal information.

• Organizations should prioritize cybersecurity and implement firewalls, encryption, and multi-factor authentication measures to protect against cyber threats. They should also conduct regular security audits and keep their systems up to date with the latest security patches.

• Organizations should be transparent and open in their communication with their customers.

• Organizations should ensure that their technology is used ethically and does not cause harm to individuals or society. They should also consider the potential impact of their technology on privacy, security, and human rights.

Organizations should continually evaluate and improve their digital practices to maintain trust. They should solicit feedback from customers and stakeholders and be responsive to their suggestions for improvement.Foster a culture of trust within the organization by aligning its values with the expectations of its customers and stakeholders. Conduct regular training and awareness programs for employees to ensure they understand their role in maintaining digital trust.

Concluding remarks

While "digital trust" may not be widely known or understood by the public, the underlying concepts are becoming increasingly important as digital technologies continue to shape our businesses, lives, and society. As such, awareness of the importance of digital trust will likely continue to grow in the coming years. Ensuring digital trust requires organizations to be mindful of ethical considerations related to privacy, bias and discrimination, cybersecurity, transparency, and responsibility. By addressing these issues, organizations can build trust with their users and create a more ethical and trustworthy digital ecosystem.

As the first child in the family, I felt a strong sense of responsibility to make a difference in the world. I realized that I wanted to pursue entrepreneurship as a means to create positive change and impact lives. My upbringing taught me the importance of using my skills, knowledge, and resources to find innovative solutions to problems and create value for others.

My entrepreneurship journey has been challenging but fulfilling. It has required hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks. I have faced obstacles and setbacks along the way, but my upbringing has instilled in me a resilient spirit and a never-give-up attitude. I am grateful for the strong foundation that my family has provided me and the invaluable lessons I have learned from them.

Today, as an entrepreneur, I am driven by the passion to make a difference and create a meaningful impact in the world. I am inspired by the legacy of my family's academic achievements and their commitment to excellence. I continue to seek solutions to problems, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and strive to create innovative solutions that can benefit society.

My entrepreneurship journey has been shaped by my humble beginnings and the values instilled in me by my family. I am proud to carry forward their legacy and use my skills and passion to make a positive difference in the world through my entrepreneurial endeavours.

Early Years and Passion for Entrepreneurship:

During my school days at APS, Bali Nagar, I had the privilege of having mentors who believed in my skills and guided me towards setting goals and working towards achieving them. Their influence shaped my career aspirations and instilled in me the importance of having a dream and working relentlessly to realize it. It was during these formative years that my passion for entrepreneurship started taking shape.

Early Ventures and Challenges:

After completing my 10th boards, I had to switch to a government school, SKV, Ramesh Nagar, due to financial issues at home. However, I was disappointed with the way the institution was not taking care of the girls in the school. Being a person of daring and truthful nature, I decided to take a stand and wrote a complaint letter to the education minister, highlighting the issues. After 8 months of relentless efforts, my concerns were addressed, and the faults were rectified,

showcasing my determination and courage to speak up for what I believed in.

This early experience of standing up for what is right and making a positive impact in my community further fuelled my passion for entrepreneurship. I realized that entrepreneurship is not just about building a successful business, but it's also about making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the greater good. This realization set me on a path of exploring various entrepreneurial opportunities and facing the challenges that came with them.

College Years and Business Ventures:

My college years were a turning point in my entrepreneurship journey. I pursued my undergraduate degree in B.Sc. Home Science Economics from Institute of Home Economics of Delhi University. During my college days, I actively participated in various extracurricular activities, including leadership roles in college societies and volunteering for social causes. I also took up internships and part-time jobs to gain practical experience and learn about the nuances of the business world.

With my passion for entrepreneurship, I ventured into my first business during my college years. I started a small venture to provide customized gift items for special occasions. Despite facing initial challenges in terms of marketing, finance, and operations, I persevered and learned valuable lessons about customer preferences, market demand, and business operations. This early entrepreneurial experience gave me the confidence and skills to explore other business opportunities in the future.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I pursued a post-graduate in Dietetics. During my post-graduation, I further honed my entrepreneurial skills through internships, business competitions, and networking events. I also

started a second business venture, offering digital marketing services to small and medium-sized enterprises. This venture gained traction quickly, and I learned the importance of innovation, adaptability, and customer-centricity in the competitive business landscape.

Building my Business Empire:

I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to start my own business. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was determined to create something unique that would deliver excellent products and services to customers. That's when I met Arshi Ahmad, and we decided to launch our first venture together - Adz Wellness Ltd.

Adz Wellness Ltd. was a combination of several different businesses - a wellness clinic, restaurant, online shopping site, and interior design firm. We worked tirelessly to make our brand stand out, and soon, we had 12 offices and 1 franchise, all located in Delhi. Our hard work paid off when we won the Best Business Award in 2018.

Armed with my education and entrepreneurial experience, I was determined to build my business empire. I started exploring various industries and identified a gap in the market for sustainable and eco-friendly products.

Even though I had no experience in home decor or digital marketing, I decided to partner with two new firms - one in the digital space and another in interior design. I

saw these ventures as new opportunities to grow my business and expand my horizons. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was excited to take on the challenge.

I faced numerous challenges, including securing funding, finding reliable suppliers, managing inventory, and marketing the products effectively. However, I was determined to overcome these obstacles and create a business that aligned with my values and vision for a sustainable future.

One of the key lessons I learned during this phase was the importance of perseverance and resilience. There were times when I faced setbacks and encountered failures, but I refused to give up. I learned from my mistakes, iterated on my strategies, and

kept pushing forward. I also sought guidance from mentors and industry experts, who provided valuable insights and helped me navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship.

As my business grew, I realized the significance of building a strong team. I hired employees who shared my passion for sustainability and had the necessary skills to contribute to the growth of the business. I also fostered a positive work culture that encouraged creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Having a supportive team has been instrumental in overcoming challenges and achieving success in my entrepreneurial journey.

In addition to building a strong team, I also focused on creating a brand that resonated with my target audience. I invested in branding, marketing, and customer engagement strategies to create a strong brand identity and build a loyal customer base. I leveraged social media, e-commerce platforms, and strategic partnerships to expand my reach and connect with customers who shared my values of sustainability and eco-conscious living.

One of the highlights of my entrepreneurial journey was when my business was featured in a leading national newspaper for its unique product offerings and sustainable business practices. This recognition boosted my brand's visibility and credibility, and I saw a significant

increase in sales and customer inquiries. It was a validation of the hard work and dedication I had put into building my business and a motivation to continue on my entrepreneurial path.

Using My Voice: A Social Activist's Journey Fighting for Justice:

With the success of my eco-friendly home decor business, I realized the potential of creating a positive impact on a larger scale. I wanted to expand my business horizons and explore opportunities to contribute to society in more meaningful ways. This realization led me to start a social enterprise that focused on empowering underprivileged women through skill development and employment opportunities.

As a social activist, I've been fortunate enough to be featured in many esteemed news channels such as News X and IndiaAhead. I've worked on cases such as Nirbhaya, Kathua rape case, Unnao case, Sabrimala Temple, and Sita Temple Case, among others. It's important to me to use my platform and voice to raise awareness and fight for justice. This social enterprise was not just about making profits, but it was about creating a positive social impact. It was a way for me to give back to the community and make a tangible difference in the lives of marginalized women.

From Entrepreneur to Best-Selling

Author: My Journey of Learning and Growth:

I'm proud to say that I've recently authored a book called "Mind Universe in Three Thousand Ways," which has become the second-best seller in the Kindle Edition category on Amazon. It's been an incredible experience to share my knowledge and insights with a wider audience. Along with being an entrepreneur, I've also pursued various degrees and cer-

tifications in areas such as Astrology, Vastu, Interior Design, Numerology, Human Behavior, and Chromo Therapy. My passion for learning has been a driving force in my life, and I believe that it's crucial to never stop expanding our horizons. By pursuing our interests and passions, we can find new avenues for growth and success.

Lessons Learned and Future Aspirations:

One of the key lessons I have learned is the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges. Entrepreneurship is not a smooth sailing journey; it is filled with ups and downs, uncertainties, and setbacks.

I have also learned the significance of having a clear vision and purpose for my business. It is not just about making profits, but it's about creating value, solving problems, and making a positive impact in the world.

Another important lesson I have learned is the power of collaboration and building a strong support system. Entrepreneurship can be challenging, and having a network of mentors, advisors, employees, and partners who share your vision and values can make a significant difference. I have learned to surround myself with people who inspire and support me, and who challenge me to be better every day.

In addition to these lessons, I have also gained a deep understanding of the importance of sustainability in business. As I pursued my passion for creating eco-friendly home decor and lifestyle products, I realized the urgent need to address environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. I have incorporated sustainability into every aspect of my business, from product design and sourcing to packaging and shipping. I have also educated my customers about the benefits of sustainable living and encouraged them to make conscious choices.

The pandemic lesson to entrepreneurs:

As an entrepreneur, the year 2020 was a challenging one for me, just like many others around the world. The pandemic forced me to shut down my 13 offices, and I was back to zero with huge losses, and unfortunately, my company was declared bankrupt. It felt like a major setback. However, I chose to see it as a learning opportunity and with the unwavering support of my family and friends, who have been my rock, I decided to start anew.

I launched my online business, Mineralz.in, along with two other businesses in partnership, and I am grateful for the opportunity to do what I love. My vision has always been to serve my nation and make a positive impact. Mineralz.in has a special place in my heart as it aims to uplift the status of farmers and dietitians in India while providing accurate information about health and wellness to people worldwide. The challenges I faced during the pandemic taught me valuable lessons that I have applied to my work life cycle. I still continue to do what I love, my vision to serve nation, helping budding entrepreneurs with my counselling and build people’s health and providing right information to the 8 billion people on

earth via Mineralz.in. Mineralz.in has vision to upgrade status of Farmers and Dietitians in India. And Idea is to serve society and create wonderful present and future for generations to live healthy Life.

Looking back, I am proud of how far I have come and the resilience I have shown. The support of my family and friends has been invaluable, and I am grateful for their unwavering belief in me. One of the key principles I live by is focusing on my actions and not being attached to the outcomes, as inspired by my favourite quote from the Bhagavad Gita.

In conclusion, my journey has been filled with challenges, but I have learned to see them as opportunities for growth. I am grateful for the support of my loved ones, and I am dedicated to serving society and making a positive impact through my businesses. With a professional approach, a resilient spirit, and a vision for a better future, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. As I continue to do what I love and pursue my entrepreneurial endeavours, I am determined to create a meaningful legacy and inspire others along the way.

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 26 27 | BIZEMAG.COM

As a child while I was growing up, my mom always used to tell me – never compare yourself with others, be happy with what you have. At the same time, I was always being compared with others when it came to academic results. It, then, left me confused and struggling with – should we compare or should we not? I am sure we all must have felt the same emotion at some point or other. Let’s try to demystify this together!

Honestly, I wasn’t too sure if ‘comparisonitis’ was even a term but believe me it exists in the dictionary. Comparisonitis is defined as ‘the compulsion to compare one’ accomplishments to others’ to determine relative importance’. It breeds dissatisfaction and robs us of peace and joy. It may lead us to change focus from our goals and achievements by altering our directions and distracts our focus.

Symptoms of Comparisonitis –

1. We feel we are not enough somehow.

2. We can’t possibly measure up to our friends, colleagues etc.

3. We feel inferior or not so capable as compared to others.

The tendency to compare ourselves is as natural as is any other emotion but when it starts to consume us and impact our confidence, that’s the sign we need to address it. The result of any comparison is a judgement about self which is rooted firmly in insecurity. And once we begin down that road, there is no end to it.

WHY IS COMPARISONITIS SO BAD?

Indeed, the negative effects of comparisons are wide and far-reaching.

1. Criticism Of Others - People who criticise more, ends up comparing more. The comparison is not about finding strengths in others but weaknesses.

2. Commending Self - Criticism or putting down someone is a way of puffing oneself up. Criticism of others is not about tearing someone down but more on promoting self. Critics are generally commending self, the underlying message is “I am better than you”.

3. Focus Shift - Comparison shifts our focus on other people’s successes and achievements rather than ours.

4. Nothing To Gain, Much To Lose - Comparison deprives us of joy, peace, contentment, pride, dignity, drive, passion and even time. It does not add any value or meaningful to our lives, rather sets in resentment and low self-confidence.

5. Roller-Coaster Ride - Comparison sees no end. The pleasure derived out of attaining success in one direction is short-lived as there will always be something or someone else to focus on and the ride starts again to prove self.

6. Need For Approval - Comparison makes us look to others for approval which means we second guess ourselves and our decisions.

29 | BIZEMAG.COM
“COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY.”
Theodore Roosevelt

IT also creates doubts on our self-needs. Comparison also fuels insecurities as one can bever admire other’s strengths as these strengths becomes yardsticks for our weaknesses.

7. Magnifying Imperfections - Comparison may fuel or exaggerate our perception of our imperfections. It may make us hyper -focussed on our shortcomings. Comparisons are also unrealistic at times. People with whom we are comparing ourselves may have challenges as well at their end which are invisible to us.

8. Dwelling On Your Shortcomings - Comparison make our mid focus on ‘what we aren’t’ or ‘what we don’t have’ instead of focusing on our positives.

FEW POINTERS –

1. Severity of Comparisonitis can be more or less severe depending on the stages of life.

2. Comparisonitis is more common in highly ambitious and accomplished people.

3. Comparisonitis may lead to moodiness, lower self-esteem, insecurity, feeling sorry for yourself, worthlessness, judging others’ success etc.

HOW TO COMBAT COMPARIONITIS?

Since comparison is such a pointless and self-sabotaging exercise, the obvious question then is how do you stop it? The first step is to acknowledge the emotion. We will not be able to change if we do not acknowledge its existence.

1. Awareness - Mostly, comparisons happen unconsciously without realisation as it’s a natural emotion. Hence, the solution is to become conscious about it. Once an issue is brought to conscious awareness, it stops sunning from behind the scenes. One can then make a decision of dealing with it from a space of greater strength and clarity. Allow self a pause, don’t judge yourself, acknowledge the thought, and gently change focus.

2. Clarity - We must place the focus of our selfworth inside of ourself instead of comparing with the outer world. Attaining clarity on our goals help. Have a plan to achieve them so that we can benchmark our progress.

3. Role Models- Comparisons need not be negative always. One can look at others’ success and achievements in a constructive way too. Study their struggles, their knowledge base, their personality traits. Turn comparison into inspiration.

4. Eliminate - Observing what triggered us into comparison is the magic mantra. Eliminating that trigger that’s sparked those toxic feelings is the key. Notice the harmful effects of comparison and remove them intentionally from the inside-out to free the mind.

5. Gratitude - Focusing on what we don’t have, will end us up never have enough. Observing and having gratitude for what we have can make us feel better, motivated and focused. It will also not leave us with much time to compare.

6. Acceptance – Acceptance of who we are and where we are, instead of fighting is necessary. Everyone has their own drive basis their capabilities and capacities. What matters is the mindset, attitude and accepting that we are all ‘perfectly imperfect’.

7. Be Kind To Self - In the mad race of comparisons, we tend to forget to appreciate and celebrate our own successes and achievements. Comparison can be really mean voices in our heads and we need to be kind to ourselves. ‘I should be doing this’ or ‘I should have this’ is a dangerous trap resultant of comparison and should be avoided.

8. Compare With Self - We must strive to be the best version of ourselves. Being aware of our past successes and achievements and find motivation in them, works. Comparison and competition can be easily turned into appreciation and compliments for the contribution of others which in turn will motivate us. Our best comparison should be with what we were in the past and no one else.

9. Celebrate Others - Constant comparison will lead us to not cheer, not appreciate what others are accomplishing in their lives. It will make it hard for us to celebrate the efforts that they are putting in to get somewhere and will stop our learnings from them. We must not feel we are losing because someone else is winning. Learning to rejoice with those who accomplish is a great trait to have.

10. Commit To Contentment - Contentment does not mean we shouldn’t have goals in life. It does not mean stagnation or idleness in life. It simply means that we develop peace about and around us and our happiness depends on what we have today and what we hope to achieve tomorrow without any comparison or competition.

Comparisons can be fairly innocent in the beginning but can become obsessive. More is the comparison, more is the discomfort.

CAN COMPARISON BE POSITIVE TOO?

1. Motivating Progress – Comparison can motivate progress, We can set realistic goals and discover ways to reach these goals by drawing inspiration from others. We can

also learn from their mistakes, experiences and struggles.

2. Feedback - Comparison can also help us getting feedback on our journey – what we are doing good and what not so good. It may also throw light on what needs to be worked upon to change or improve.

3. Learnings - Comparison in order to identify your shortcomings, limitations or areas of improvement and then using this information to better ourselves is healthy. It can help ups progress in life constructively.

4. Inspiration - From the double edged sword that comparison is, we can chose to opt for inspiration. Instead of being envious of others’ success, we can be inspired by their success stories and push ourselves to our optimum potential.

5. Self-Improvement - Use comparison for self-improvement rather than self-condemnation. Learn from others how they handle stress, failure, adversities and roadblocks. Learn self-management, organisation skills, communication style from those you admire or any other trait that helps you improve.

BUSINESS STRATEGY E-MAGAZINE | 30 31 | BIZEMAG.COM

6. Appreciation and Gratitude - When we compare ourselves to others, we might be motivated to take a good, realistic look at ourself. We might note our positive traits and the good in our lives.

7. Clear Pathway - Comparison provides us a clear pathway to success because we have someone who we admire and who is doing what we long to do and providing us the blueprint to get there. Witnessing someone’s growth also provides us clarity on what it takes to achieve or accomplish success.

8. Hope & Courage - Comparison also firm ups our belief and hope that something huge and rewarding is possible because we can see others attaining it.

Comparisonitis is a recipe for unhappiness, frustration and stress unless we are the best in the world which unfortunately we are not. The truth isperhaps others are comparing themselves with us because we might be better at something than them. Also,we must understand, behind every success and accomplishment, there is a tale of struggle, fear, tears and failures which is invisible and we become envious of the visible success.

We end up getting frustrated or demotivated because we compare. Life becomes a better version of self if we compare ourselves with the previous version of us. That’s the only game we can win. When we stop comparing and focus internally, we start being better and that’s what really matters. We must have an inner scoreboard rather than an external scoreboard as the most important thing in life are internal and not external.

Comparisonitis is inevitable. How we use it to our advantage is something that is crucial. Comparison can drive us to greater things as it offers us possibilities and goals to strive for, provides as a clear pathways. If used judiciously it can provide you strategies to success. However, if not used, judiciously can create deep dissatisfaction, stress, frustration and burnout. It can also breed jealousy, selfdoubt, over-confidence and arrogance.

It’s a shame that despite knowing the negative effects of comparison, we still indulge in it. But honestly, the struggle is real, and once we begin down that road, we never find an end to it.

Key Take Aways

• The most important things in life are internal and not external.

• Comparison is a recipe for unhappiness, frustration and resentment.

• We can be anything but can’t be everything.

• There is always something that we’re better at than other people. This is the only game we can really win.

• Comparison should be with who we were yesterday and strive should be to be a better version of self rather than comparison.

Be careful about who you associate with and what you share with them, avoiding dealing with any negative energy. Prioritize your health- eat well, sleep well and practice mindfulness through yoga and meditation.
