CHANGE IN LABOUR MARKET AND RATE OF UNEMPLOYMENT

The global labour market is undergoing significant changes as a result of various factors such as advances in technology, globalization, and shifting economic and demographic trends. These changes are having a significant impact on employment opportunities and unemployment rates on a global level.

One major factor shaping the global labour market is the impact of technology and automation. Automation and the use of artificial intelligence and robotics are leading to job displacement in many industries, particularly in manufacturing and certain service sectors. As machines and software are able to perform tasks that were previously done by human workers, many jobs are becoming obsolete, leading to higher unemployment rates in certain sectors.

Factors and Impact:

Technological advancements and automation: The increasing use of technology and automation in various industries is leading to job displacement, particularly in manufacturing and certain service sectors. This can result in higher unemployment rates in certain sectors, but also lead to new job opportunities in other areas such as technology and data analysis.

Globalization and trade: The increasing integration of economies through trade and investment has led to the offshoring of jobs to lower-cost countries, resulting in increased competition for jobs in developed countries and potentially lower wages and higher unemployment rates.

Economic recessions and downturns: Economic downturns can lead to businesses cutting costs and laying off workers, resulting in higher unemployment

rates. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the labour market, leading to job loss and increased unemployment globally.

Demographic changes: An aging population in many developed countries is leading to a smaller workforce and a greater demand for skilled workers, resulting in a shortage of workers in certain sectors and increased competition for jobs in others.

Government policies and regulations: Government policies and regulations can have a direct impact on job creation and unemployment rates through initiatives such as infrastructure spending, tax incentives, and other programs. Government regulations can also affect the labour market by setting standards for minimum wages, working conditions, and other issues.

Business Strategy E-magazine | 6 7 | bizemag.com

Global migration: The movement of people from one country to another, whether through legal or illegal means, can impact the labour market by adding more workforce to the host country or by changing the demographic profile of the workforce.

Remote work: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift towards remote work, which has the potential to change the way we work and the way companies operate. This can have an impact on the labour market as some industries may be impacted differently than others.

Climate change: As climate change leads to more extreme weather events, it can disrupt the labour market as it can make it difficult for some businesses to operate, or it can create new jobs in fields such as renewable energy or disaster management.

All these factors interact and interplay with each other, making it complex to predict the exact impacts on the labour market and employment rate. However, it is clear that the global labour market is undergoing significant changes, and adaptability and flexibility will be key for businesses, workers, and governments to navigate these changes and maintain a healthy and stable labour market.

Manufacturing: Automation and technology have had a significant impact on the manufacturing industry, leading to job displacement in certain areas such as assembly line work. However, the industry has also seen job growth in areas such as robotics and automation engineering.

Services: The service sector, particularly in fields such as retail, customer service, and finance, has been heavily impacted by automation and technology, leading to job displacement and increased competition for jobs. However, the sector has also seen growth in areas such as e-commerce and digital marketing.

Information Technology: The IT industry has seen significant growth as a result of the increasing use of technology in various industries. Jobs such as software development, data analysis, and cybersecurity are in high demand.

Healthcare: The healthcare industry is expected to see significant job growth as a result of an aging population and advancements in medical technology. Jobs such as nursing, home health care, and medical technology are in high demand.

Construction: The construction industry is expected to see job growth as a result of increased demand for infrastructure projects and building construction. Jobs such as construction management, building trades, and environmental engineering are in high demand.

Renewable energy: The renewable energy industry is expected to see significant job growth as a result of increased investment in clean energy sources such as solar and wind power. Jobs such as solar panel installation and wind turbine maintenance are in high demand.

Remote work: The shift towards remote work has created new job opportunities in fields such as telecommuting, remote project management, and virtual event planning.

E-commerce and logistics: The e-commerce industry has seen significant growth as a result of the increasing popularity of online shopping. Jobs such as logistics, warehouse management, and last-mile delivery are in high demand.

REMOTE WORK SUCCESS STORIES Insights from Companies in diverse sectors

Summary: In recent years, the world of work has undergone a seismic shift, propelled by technological advancements, and changing societal attitudes. With its rigid hierarchies and organizational structures, the traditional office model is being challenged like never before with the rise of remote work, automation, and the gig economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has only hastened these changes, as companies worldwide have embraced remote work as a permanent option. Dr. Mythili and Dr. Mavis, two leading experts in the field, are releasing a groundbreaking new book this year: "The Future of Work G7- Perspectives, Trends, Developments, and Automation Effect." As an expert in this field, Dr. Mythili's article delves into corporate strategies for navigating this changing landscape and learnings for organizations to unlock the potential benefits of remote work while ensuring their employees remain happy, productive, and engaged.

Introduction

In the future, remote working, hybrid working, and other flexible work options will be extensively witnessed worldwide. Countries, societies, organizations, and individuals need to embrace the change gracefully and adapt effectively to ensure the sustainability of business growth. Most of the world has experienced remote working during the pandemic and has realized that it is a two-edged sword that needs to be tactfully managed to leverage its true potential and benefits. Remote working offers numerous benefits for both employees and employers. One of the main advantages is increased flexibility and autonomy, as remote workers can set their schedules and work from any location with internet access. This can lead to greater work-life balance, reduced commuting time, and increased job satisfaction.

Remote work can also increase productivity and cost savings for employees, as it reduces the need for expensive office space and allows for a larger pool of talent worldwide. Additionally, remote work can positively impact the environment by reducing carbon emissions associated with commuting. Remote or hybrid work presents unique challenges for both employees and employers. One of the main challenges is maintaining productivity and communication. Without a proper structure and accountability of an office environment, it can be difficult for employees to stay motivated and focused. Additionally, it can be challenging to maintain strong relationships and effective communication with colleagues and managers when working remotely, which can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection.

THE ROLE OF RESEARCH IN QUALITY EDUCATION & TEACHING PEDAGOGY

Let me first state Some Areas of Research. Research on effective teaching strategies; on student motivation; on technology in education; research on inclusive education; on assessment strategies; on curriculum design; research on collaborative learning; and on the role of emotions in learning. These are just SOME of the areas of research,

The ROLE of Research. THIS research provides evidence-based solutions to educational problems and helps teachers make informed decisions about teaching methods. Research helps teachers identify and understand the needs of their students. and provides a basis for curriculum development and design.

Research also provides teachers with insights into how to create a positive learning environment that fosters student engagement and motivation. Research helps teachers understand the unique needs of diverse student populations and develop strategies to support their learning. It provides teachers with evidence-based strategies to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and other important 21st-century skills. Research also provides teachers with insights into how to promote creativity and innovation in their students, and how to create collaborative learning environments.

Business Strategy E-magazine | 20 21 | bizemag.com

Ultimately, research supports evidence-based decision-making in education, helping policymakers develop effective policies and programs that improve student outcomes.

Two important issues.

The First: In Serial 2 above, I have referred to a study on the benefits of cooperative learning. Here, Sugat Mitra and his extensive, pan-India ‘Hole in the Wall” experiment done about 20 years ago are relevant. His TED and other talks highlight the essentials, and indicate the importance of and possibilities with cooperative, collaborative learning; more so in the absence of a formal teacher. The children were able to learn how to operate a computer with no teacher! Two of his talks can be seen here and here.

The Second: I want to end by reminding you of the beautiful Sydney Poitier movie of 50 years ago, “To Sir, with Love”. A “coloured” engineer doesn't get a job, and he is forced to accept a teaching job, teaching rowdy children in London’s East End. And how he does a wonderfully successful job about it. Even giving up an engineering job, when he finally gets one.

Research is an important foundation upon which we structure policies, curriculum and teaching pedagogy. The proof of the pudding is in the consequent outcomes on student learning and the impact on the psychological well-being of all stakeholders.

1. "Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Effective and Reflective Practices" (Hornby et al., 2019) discussed the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive classroom environment for all students.

2. "The Benefits of Cooperative Learning" (Johnson et al., 2007) analyzed the benefits of cooperative learning in classrooms and found that it can improve student communication and teamwork skills.

3. "The Impact of Hands-On Activities on Student Achievement and Engagement in Science" (Liu et al., 2011) found that hands-on activities in science classes improved student achievement and engagement.

4. "The Power of Feedback" (Hattie and Timperley, 2007) discussed the importance of providing timely and specific feedback to students to improve their motivation and academic performance.

5. "The Effects of Digital Tools on Student Learning" (Means et al., 2010) analyzed the impact of digital tools on student learning outcomes and found that they can improve student achievement and engagement.

6. "Promoting Positive Emotions in the Classroom: An Evidence-Based Approach" (Brackett et al., 2012) discussed the importance of creating a positive and supportive classroom environment for students' social and emotional well-being.

7. "Project-Based Learning in STEM Education: A Review" (Huang et al., 2021) analyzed the impact of project-based learning on student engagement and found that it can improve student motivation and achievement.

8. "The Formative Assessment Process in the Classroom: Evidence from Empirical Research" (Black and Wiliam, 1998) provided evidence that formative assessment can improve student achievement and motivation.

Buddha

Outburst of words, a flushed face, pounding heart are the symptoms that I am sure we all must be painfully familiar and have experienced many a times in life. The underlying emotions behind these symptoms is ANGER.

Simply put, Anger is a “short madness” that sets us on the path to self-destruction – “very like a falling rock which breaks itself to pieces upon the very thing which it crushes”. Definition is scary, isn’t it?

Anger is the most natural and automatic response to pain – physical and emotional. We feel anger when we don’t feel well, feel threatened, experience some loss or feel rejected/dejected. It is an ancient part of our defence mechanism that allowed us to survive, adapt and defend and is mostly there to protect us. Anger helps us to fight or flee from danger; motivates us to find solutions to problems. So then, is Anger good or bad? Let’s delve deeper –

Anger, like any emotion, conveys a message, tells us if a situation is upsetting, threatening or challenging. Its neither good nor bad. Anger becomes a problem only when it is displayed excessively, when it is harming self or others. Anger can range in intensity from annoyance to range, from person to person. Anger can cause us to behave in fashion we wouldn’t otherwise behave. While it is perfectly normal to feel angry when we are mistreated or wronged, truth is likely to have a negative impact on the way people see us, impair our judgement and get in our way of success too.

Psychology of anger

Understanding the psychology of anger can provide insight into Anger. Our interpretation or reaction to a situation can depend on lot of factors in our life –

 Our upbringing and childhood

 Past experiences

 Current circumstances

Consciousness about how and why we interpret and react to situations can help us cope with our emotions better. It can also help us find productive strategies to handle our anger.

Roots of anger–

1. Feeling Of Righteousness – The feeling that ‘I am right’ is the root cause of anger. We cannot get angry if we think we are not right. Righteousness is a perceptionwhich can be subjective.

2. Unfulfilled Desires – Frustration is bound to set in if our deep desires remain unfulfilled and frustration raises anger.

3. Being Tired – Physical and mental tiredness, high stress levels that we are carrying fuel the anger.

Expression of anger

Anger hits differently to different people, some might scream, some might hit an object or another person, some might resort to self-harm to let out their anger. Expressing anger healthily is important for our mental health. There are two ways people express their anger –

1. Verbal – Raised voices, insulting and hurt words, being abusive, snapping, shouting, yelling, name-calling, sarcasm are ways to express anger verbally.

Finding ways to control anger is essential. When we allow anger to take control of our lives, it can affect everything we have. Learning to control anger and express it appropriately will help us in building better relationships, achieving our goals, and lead a healthier, more satisfying life. Here are a couple of coping mechanisms that can help -

1. Identifying The Root Cause: Identifying the root cause of your anger and understanding the emotions behind the anger certainly helps. Important is to know if the anger is masking other feelings like embarrassment, loneliness, shame, fear, insecurity, anxiety, vulnerability. Identifying the root cause ofanger will help us communicate our anger better, which will lead to constructive action and further resolution.

2. Do Not Bottle-Up: Bottling up the emotion will result in a sudden and intense outburst when its least expected. Expressing anger assertively instead of aggressively is the key.

3. Avoid Triggers: If we are quick to become angry, it’s useful to try to identify and avoid our triggers. If we are often triggered when having a conversation with a particular person or about a particular topic, we must avoid them or that topic until we’ve learned how to have better control over our anger.

4. Think Before You Speak: Allowing ourselves few moments before we say something in the heat of the moment which we might regret later, helps. We must collect our thoughts together and allow others involved in the situation to do the same as well. Once in control, we must address the concerns clearly and directly without trying to control the situation and hurting others.

5 Identify Possible Solutions: Instead of focusing on what made us angry, identifying what can be the possible solution, works. Few things are just out of our control thus we need to be realistic about what we can and cannot change. Getting angry does not fix things and might make things worse.

6 Forgive: Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We will be engulfed by our own bitterness if we allow anger to crowd over positive feelings. Forgiving someone who made us angry might help us learn from the situation and strengthen our relationships with people.

7. Cognitive Restructuring: Focus on expressing rational rather than irrational thoughts is crucial. We must avoid using ‘always’ and ‘never’ in our thoughts and conversations. These terms make us feel like our anger is justified making it worse. Managing anger doesn't mean one should never get angry. In fact, it involves learning how to acknowledge, cope with, and express our anger in healthy and constructive ways.

How anger helps us?

Anger is a substitute emotion too in some cases. People often express anger so that they don't have to feel pain. It makes them feel better to be angry than it does to be in pain which may be an conscious or unconscious action. Anger helps people in many ways -

• Distraction – Someone in pain will think about pain whereas someone with anger will think about harming self or others who caused them pain. Transforming this pain into anger results in an attention shift from self-focus to focus on others.

• Temporary Protection – Anger temporarily protects us from dealing with the real feeling be it pain, embarrassment, fear or guilt etc. It helps hiding the reality that we find a situation frightening or scary. Anger also helps to duck the need to work on resolution temporarily.

• Feeling of Righteousness – Getting angry also creates a feeling of righteousness, justification and moral superiority. When we are angry, we are angry with a cause. No one will get angry with anyone unless they feel they have been harmed by others. Justified or unjustified anger, the feeling of righteousness associated with anger offers a powerful boost to self-esteem.

CONSUMER TRENDS AND THEIR IMPACTS ON RETAIL AND CONSUMER GOODS

What is basically a Customer Trends means?

Acustomer trend refers to a pattern of behaviour or preference that emerges among a group of customers over a period of time. These trends can include changes in purchasing habits, the types of products or services customers are interested in, or the ways in which customers interact with a business. Customer trends can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as technological advances, changes in the economy, or shifts in societal values. Businesses and organizations use this information to understand their customers, to predict future behaviour, and to make decisions that align with their customer's needs, preferences, and demands.

Companies which influence the customer trend behaviour

There are several companies that can influence customer trend behaviour, including:

Tech companies: Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, and Apple have a significant impact on customer trends, as they collect and analyse large amounts of data on consumer behaviour. They use this data to understand customer preferences and to develop new products and services that align with these preferences.

Retail companies: Retail companies such as Amazon and Walmart also have a significant impact on customer trends, as they have access to a large amount of data on consumer behaviour. They use this data to understand customer preferences and to develop new products and services that align with these preferences.

Food and beverage companies: Companies in the food and beverage industry can also have an impact on customer trends, as they produce and market products that can shape customer preferences and behaviour.

Social media influencers: Social media influencers with a large following on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube can also have an impact on customer trends, as they can shape customer preferences and behaviour through their content and product recommendations.

Consumer trends impact on the retail and consumer goods:

Online shopping: The rise of online shopping has been a major trend in recent years, and it has had a significant impact on the retail industry. Online shopping has made it easier for consumers to purchase goods and compare prices, which has led to increased competition among retailers. This has led to an increase in the number of online retailers and a decrease in the number of brick-and-mortar stores.

Sustainability: Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchasing decisions. This has led to a trend towards sustainable and ethically-produced goods, which has had an impact on the consumer goods industry. Many companies have had to adapt their production and sourcing processes to meet this demand, which has led to increased costs and a change in business models.

Personalization: Consumers are also increasingly looking for personalized products and experiences. This has led to a trend towards customization and on-demand manufacturing, which has had an impact on the consumer goods industry. Companies have had to adapt to this trend by investing in new technologies and implementing more flexible production processes.

Health and wellness: Consumers are becoming more health-conscious, and this trend has led to an increase in demand for healthier products, such as organic and natural foods, functional beverages, and supplements. This has had an impact on the consumer goods industry, as companies have had to adapt their products and marketing to meet this demand.

Experience economy: Consumers are increasingly valuing experiences over products and this has led to the rise of the "experience economy". This trend has led to an increase in demand for experiential retail, such as pop-up shops and interactive brand experiences.

Misleading customers: Creating a fake trend can mislead customers into purchasing products or services that they may not actually need or want. This can harm customer trust in a company and lead to a loss of customer loyalty.

Damaged reputation: Creating a fake trend can also damage a company's reputation, as it can be viewed as dishonest or unethical. This can lead to negative public perception of the company, which can harm its ability to attract and retain customers.

Legal consequences: In some cases, creating a fake trend can also lead to legal consequences, as it may be considered false advertising or fraud.

Wasted resources: Creating a fake trend can also lead to wasted resources, as companies may invest in creating and promoting a fake trend, when they could have invested in creating a real and sustainable trend.

Economic consequences: Creating a fake trend can also have an economic impact, as it can lead to overproduction of products that customers may not actually want or need. This can lead to a decrease in profits for companies and a decrease in economic growth for the industry.

Instances where companies create fake trends:

In 2020, several companies were accused of artificially inflating sales numbers for face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Companies were found to be purchasing their own products in bulk to boost sales numbers and make it appear as though there was high demand for their products.

In 2016, several fashion companies were accused of artificially inflating sales numbers for "skinny jeans" and other fashion items. These companies were found to be purchasing their own products in bulk to boost sales numbers and make it appear as though there was high demand for their products.

In 2015, several companies were accused of artificially inflating sales numbers for "smart watches". These companies were found to be purchasing their own products in bulk to boost sales numbers and make it appear as though there was high demand for their products.

In 2013, several companies were accused of artificially inflating sales numbers for "Fidget Spinners". These companies were found to be purchasing their own products in bulk to boost sales numbers and make it appear as though there was high demand for their products.

How to overcome these fake trending:

Educate customers: One of the most effective ways to overcome the negative impacts of fake influences

is to educate customers about the issue. By providing customers with accurate and reliable information, they will be better equipped to make informed purchasing decisions and to identify and avoid fake trends.

Increase transparency: Companies can increase transparency by openly sharing information about their products, production processes, and supply chains. This can help customers to understand the true value of products and to identify and avoid fake trends.

Encourage customer feedback: Encouraging customers to provide feedback can help companies to identify and address any issues related to fake trends. By listening to customer concerns and taking action to address them, companies can build trust and loyalty.

Implement strict regulations: Governments and industry groups can implement strict regulations and oversight to prevent companies from creating fake trends. This can include penalties for companies found to be engaging in deceptive practices and increased oversight of advertising and marketing practices.

Encourage ethical business practices: Encouraging ethical business practices can help to create a culture of integrity and accountability within companies. This can include promoting transparency, encouraging honest communication, and recognizing and rewarding companies that engage in ethical behaviour.

It's important to note that overcoming fake influences is a complex process that requires the collaboration of companies, governments, and consumers. By working together, we can create a more transparent and trustworthy marketplace for consumer goods.
