THE controversy surrounding ‘Gardagate’ has many far reaching implications and serious questions are now being asked about Garda involvement in a number of high profile cases including the murder of Fr. Niall Malloy, the phone tapping of the prison service, the Corrib gas line dispute and the Cynthia Owens murder case. Irish-based human rights organisation Front Line Defenders has called for any independent inquiry into An Garda Siochana to include a complete investigation and review of Garda handling of the Corrib Gas dispute. The deputy director of the organisation, Andrew Anderson, said “The concerns, which Front Line Defenders raised in its 2010 report, 'Breakdown in Trust; a Report on the Corrib Gas Dispute,' have not been adequately addressed and there continues to be a climate of mistrust between the local community opposed to the project and An Garda Síochána”. The organisation said they are specifically calling for any independent inquiry into An Garda Síochána accountability to review the policies and practices related to the policing of the Corrib gas dispute, including; the keeping of records, how legal advice was sought and acted on, timing and practice in connection with the service of summonses and the bringing of prosecutions, particularly in matters where complaints have been brought to the GSOC and review the process by which the GSOC reviewed complaints into the policing of the Corrib gas dispute. During the recent Alan Shatter Confidence Dail Debate, calls were made by numerous T.Ds including for a full and complete investigation into the murder of Fr. Niall Malloy.

Speaking in the Dail, Joe Higgins said “It is time for a commission of inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, and the investigation of the death or murder, of the Reverend Niall Molloy as pursued relentlessly by the journalist Gemma O’Doherty. It is one of the longest running miscarriages of justice cases in the history of the State. The Government must move on this.” Also speaking during the same Dail debate, Richard Boyd Barrett said “Three times in the last two weeks I have asked about the appalling case of Cynthia Owen, a child who was ritually raped and made pregnant at the age of ten. Her baby was murdered and she alleges that Gardaí were involved in that abuse. The case was closed down after six weeks and nobody was ever brought to trial over it. There was a sham investigation years later when the victim of this heinous crime was not even interviewed. The person who carried out that investigation had said publicly a few weeks before that, cases of abuse like this should not be investigated at all. Ms Owen has asked the Minister, Deputy Shatter, through her solicitor, for a meeting. She is seeking a commission to investigate this heinous crime, yet the Minister still says “No”. How can one have confidence with issues like that?” Additionally, Luke Flanagan spoke about the phone tapping of the prison service. He enquired “I wish to ask about Brian Purcell. He had a connection with the prison service; apparently he ran the prison service. Now, we discover that phones were tapped in the prison service. What did he know about that? Did he have anything to do with it?

HBO is lending its name and logo to a new Tourism Ireland campaign that aims to promote Northern Ireland as a top holiday destination in markets across the world. The new campaign kicks off with adverts on Facebook and Twitter and will run until early June in Great Britain, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Welcoming the announcement Arlene Foster said: “Today’s announcement follows months of negotiation with HBO, America’s most successful television company whose services reach more than 50 countries outside the U.S. “The partnership is a major coup for tourism and offers a unique opportunity to promote Northern Ireland, the home of the Game of Thrones series, in a brand new way to the many fans around the world. “As the fan base has grown substantially over the first three seasons, everyone now

wants a piece of the action. The hype is incredible and on the same level as many Hollywood blockbusters, this month’s ‘Vanity Fair’ has even devoted its front cover to a photograph of the cast with the stunning Antrim Coast Road as their picturesque backdrop.” The Tourism Ireland campaign aims to leverage the incredible success of the HBO brand and the huge global popularity of Game of Thrones, with its strong associations with Northern Ireland where much of the filming takes place. The park is looking great and the improvements are to be welcomed and Dublin City Council are to be commended on the work being done to the park, but more needs to be done. An outdoor gym would be a great asset to all users of the park, and more facilities like this are needed in the Crumlin/kimmage and South west inner city areas, it is hoped that the Swimming pool refurbishment in Crumlin will be completed by mid August. NUMBER OF ONETEACHER SCHOOLS SET TO JUMP FROM 8 TO 60 THE Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn has confirmed to Fianna Fáil that the number of one teacher schools in the country could jump from 8 to as high as 60 from September, as a result of Government increases to pupil teacher thresholds. In reply to questions from Fianna Fáil in the Dáil, Minister Quinn said there are currently 8 one teacher schools in the country, but that this is set to increase to as high as 60 in September based on current enrollment figures. The impending cuts are a direct result of rolling increases in the pupil teacher ratio introduced by Minister Quinn in his first budget in office, Budget 2012. Deputy McConalogue commented, “This is a direct admission from Minister Quinn about the real impact of his cuts on smaller schools. As it stands, 52 two teacher schools are on course to be downgraded to one teacher schools because their pupil numbers are below the new threshold of 20 required by Minister

Quinn to retain two teachers. “The Minister also confirmed in reply to my questions that 61 three teacher schools have fallen below the new threshold for retaining all of their teachers. This means they have already lost a teacher or are at risk of losing a teacher in the future. Similarly, 50 four teacher schools have been caught by the new pupil teacher ratio and have already been hit with cuts or are on course for future cuts to staffing levels. “This is real evidence of the Government’s targeted campaign against small schools. The burden of Minister Quinn’s changes to the Pupil Teacher Ratio has fallen on rural schools, minority faith schools and Gaeltacht schools. The cuts are based on pupil numbers alone, with no consideration of the geography of an area, a school’s particular ethos or the school’s position on the community. The number of schools affected adds to concerns that this is an underhand campaign to eventually force schools in more rural areas to amalgamate.”

300 PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR NEW TRINITY DEMENTIA RESEARCH HEALTH OF SPOUSAL DEMENTIA CAREGIVERS FOCUS OF TRINITY RESEARCH INFORMAL family caregivers play a vital role in looking after the increasing numbers of older people living with dementia, but looking after the health and wellbeing of caregivers is also incredibly important. Dementia is an acquired and irreversible syndrome that involves a decline in multiple mental abilities, such as attention and memory, which is severe enough to interfere with everyday functioning. In Ireland much of dementia care is provided by informal family caregivers; about 50,000 people, or 26,000 family units, currently look after a relative with at least one symptom of dementia. These caregivers make an incredibly important contribution because they enable people with dementia to continue to live at home in their own communities, and this is associated with better quality of life and positive health outcomes for the person with dementia. However, providing dementia care can be stressful for caregivers and such stress may have an impact on the caregivers’ own health. It is therefore extremely important that the impact of caregiving is considered and that the wellbeing of caregivers is understood and

protected. De-Stress is a new study on the health and wellbeing of Irish spousal dementia caregivers. The study is being carried out by researchers in Trinity College Dublin’s NEIL (NeuroEnhacement for Independent Lives) programme and is funded by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and the Health Research Board. The aim of the study is to understand the impact that providing dementia care has on caregivers’ wellbeing and to identify factors that may help to promote or protect caregivers’ health. Ultimately the goal of the research is to inform policy and the development of targeted interventions and supports for improving caregiver health, so that caregivers can continue to look after their loved ones with dementia at home for as long as possible. The research team at Trinity are looking to recruit 300 participants for the project; specifically people aged 50+ who are providing care at home for their spouse or partner with dementia. Taking part involves answering questions about caregiver activities and physical and psychological wellbeing, completing tasks on various aspects of

mental functioning, such as memory and attention, and providing saliva samples, which will be used to examine physiological and genetic factors that may be linked with healthy ageing. Participation is open until November 2014 and no travel is necessary to take part. THE garden is slowly awakening now. It is early springtime and all around I can see signs of new life. All the shrubs and flowers that are due to come back have begun their journey. They will arrive at different times throughout the coming summer months. I hope I can make their stay a pleasurable one. I am wondering which ones I will have to make new beds for, and which ones like to be in the shade or sun. I am trying to remember what each one looked like the last time I saw them and how they were reacting to the places I allocated for them. I can look back at the photographs I took of them last year and note how each one looked. Were they healthy looking? Did they have the right amount of protection and colour? Was the food to their liking? Might there have been any disturbances around them? Good food will have to be purchased and pots, beds and boxes will be freshened up! I will save as much rain water as I can, for they do have a particular liking for that, and plenty of it! Each evening when the sun goes down they like to take a little drink. About every three weeks they like to have a rich meal. There were a few who unfortunately didn't get along well together, and if Mint the wily old herb had his way he'd take over, spoiling every ones stay. I think I'll give him a room of his own this year. There are also a bunch that call themselves 'Lords and Ladies' who are devils for jumping from bed to bed! Busy Lizzie couldn't seem to keep her dress on so I wonder did I give her too much to drink! I wonder will Rose (the rambler) get entangled with Virginia Creeper this year, or will they go their separate ways? I hope I see the Lupin family stay a bit longer this time, at least as long as the Dahlias whom I'd begun to believe would be with me forever. They really seem to like it here and each year they bring more of their family to visit.

So much so, that I will need to make much larger beds for them. I'm a little concerned about the Clematis family because they never seem to settle. I hear they like to be able to keep their feet cool and their heads in the sun. Some things I know to bother my visitors for sure are the pests such as flies, blights and the many members of the Slug family. I am still trying to find the least offensive way to deal with the problem after many years of intrusion. Giving the Slugs beer can cause more riots in the area, particularly around the back of the rear shed! Not to mention the multiplying that goes on!! But my guests for the summer do enjoy the visits of the many butterflies, birds and bees every day, and they go all out to feed them on fat berries, nectar and pollen. I have witnessed the Bumbles in particular falling from the Sweet Peas trellis with huge bellies before getting their bearings to take their flight away again. I don't for a moment class myself as a typical gardener. Hence the reason behind my concern over making things as good as possible for the guests who do deign to spend time with me. But for now the ground and I await. The Primroses and the Snowdrops are already here. They like cool air and aren't afraid to rough it! And the Daffodils seem to be taking up residence everywhere now, even lining the sides of the roads of Ireland, striping them with gold. Sometimes it seems, a truly exceptional and beautiful vision will arrive for far too brief a stay. It could be the gorgeous Cherrie Blossom or even the humble Hollyhock. Gracing the lawn with shades of perfect pinks and hot crimsons. Alas, with the first strong breeze these stunning gowns of perfection fall sadly from their hosts. Falling like fairytale pink snow, creating a bed of natures confetti on the grass below. Try as I might to please them into staying longer,

it's all been in vain. The various perfumes of my visitors will no doubt save my weekly purchase of air fresheners. I shall fill my vases with gifts of heady scents and mood evoking wonders. I'm always amazed at their generosity. Beautiful Lavender has given me sprigs to cherish for years. The charming Herb family have fed me, cured me and endured me for many years, with the lovable rogue mint even making me his own refreshing tea! The Rose family have already made their leafy reservation, as they cleverly disguise their thorny issues against the front wall! But there is one old lady that I would like to mention, and that is dear old Iris who has been with me through thick and thin many years. Actually I think I must have Iris and her childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children! Many a time she has wondered if she outstayed her welcome. But I have always insisted that she stay. Even now her long, jade arms reach up from her bed, promising me of the wonders she will unfurl in the weeks to come. But I urge all these little sleepy heads to take their time for now. They have a long and arduous journey ahead of them. Probably not knowing what to expect when they get here? Will the weather be fine? And will mutts and moggies be kept at bay? In my prayer for their safe arrival I send out a little message and a promise that all will be well. Yet somehow I sense that in a strange and mysterious way they already know. LILLIES. Slowly they bloomed before me. Spear shaped leaves beneath Ten chalices of pink and white. Offering Lilly scent to Permeate the air in glory. There will be starbursts born tonight. JAX MILLER’S INSPIRATION Written by Orla Coffey HAVE you ever witnessed something truly inspiring? In the last two weeks, I have. I’ll explain… Many people think that writers make a great living when, in reality, it’s a tough gig. Most struggle for years without even making a basic living. Over the past two weeks, however, I’ve witnessed something rather incredible… and, ironically, it centers on a book, “Freedom’s Child” which tells the tale of a woman in the witness protection program. This woman, named “Freedom”, “risks everything” to save the daughter she gave up for adoption… Doesn’t it sound amazing? Well, plenty of publishers – worldwide – have read it and they are obviously impressed. The book, which has been described by Zack Wagman, senior editor in Crown Publishing, as a “propulsive, raucous thriller” was one of the most talked-about reads in London’s Book Fair 2014, with main publishing houses throughout the world trying to get a piece of it, bidding, translating, auctioning…you name it! All of this is very exciting, as it is, but the reason why I’m so exhilarated by it all is because I know the author. I was in a writing group with Jax Miller – although I know her as Aine O’Domhnaill(pictured right) – a couple of years

ago… Jax, who is from New York, but is living and married in Ireland, is a lovely girl, a supremely talented writer and one of the most passionate people I’ve ever been in the presence of. Witnessing what’s happening in respect of her writing career has been magical. There is little as liberating, refreshing and joyful as watching someone you know realize their dreams. And it made me think of a beautiful old Indian tale about Career Choices, which I share with you below… There is a town In Northern India with a very strong tradition of supporting children in their chosen career path, whatever career they may choose. Many years ago, a man and his wife sat their three sons down and asked them… “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The first son answered, “A fireman” and the parents were delighted. The child’s uncle was a fireman and they knew that the uncle could teach the child to be a great one too. They supported their son completely. Given the same question, the second son answered, “A farmer.” The parents were, again, delighted. They had an aging neighbor who had no children to help farm his land, so the parents would bring their son over to the farmer tomorrow

and he would surely take this boy under his wing. They supported their son completely. The parents moved on to ask their third son the same question and their son’s answer was clear and loud; “A beggar.” The parents were disgusted. The father, red-faced with fury, picked the boy up by the scruff of his neck and, shouting, “No son of mine is going to be a beggar!” he threw the boy out onto the street… The boy, of course, grew up to a beggar. With a twist. For whatever reason, he was a very lucky beggar. He found a “lucky” begging spot, so he didn’t want for anything and he lived a stress-free and contented life. He died on the street when he was 50 years old (which was a long life, for those days!) and a group of nearby shopkeepers deliberated over what to do with his body… They decided they wouldn’t burn it, as they didn’t know his religious beliefs and couldn’t take the risk of offending his God. They decided they wouldn’t put him in the Ganges River, as he always expressed a dislike for water. Finally, they all agreed that the safest thing

to do would be to bury him, in the exact spot that he always loved so much. The men dug down through the earth with tools and with their bare hands. They hit many rocks and hard spots on the way down – it was tiresome work – but they kept going. At 6ft deep, they hit a metal box, so they dug around it, deeper, removing all clay and stones clinging to it and eventually releasing the box from the ground’s clasp… Their eyes widened as they opened the box on the pavement. It was full to the brim with diamonds, gold and sapphires – it was worth more money than was contained in the whole of India. And what does this story tell you? That, no matter what profession you choose, you can be happy in your spot but there are financial rewards if you stand your ground, work hard and dig deep. Jax Miller is a brilliant example of going for what you want in life, applying yourself, digging deep and finding your just rewards. Well done girl! Total inspiration! :-)

AVERAGE scores in problem solving skills by Irish teens prove that Junior Cert overhaul is needed according to Minister of Education, Ruairi Quinn. In a report done by the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed that Irish teens are only average when tested on a computer assessed problem solving study. Ireland ranked 17th out of the 28 OECD countries that participated and 22nd out of the total 44 countries who took part. Countries that ranked the highest including Australia, Canada, Finland, the UK with Asia dominating the top six place in the rankings; Singapore was ranked first.

Ireland was on par with countries like Denmark and Sweden, performing similarly to them. The study also revealed that was no significant difference between male and female students who were tested. However, in comparison with the PISA study for Maths, Science and English done in 2012, Irish student’s performance in computer based problem solving is less successful. A reason given for the average results is a “lack of familiarity with computers at home and school for school-related tasks.” Speaking about the findings, Minister Quinn said that study showed improvements can still be

made in teaching and learning methods. “The performance of Irish students on problem solving in this PISA study is good, but there is considerable room for improvement. I believe we have the methods to significantly improve such skills at our disposal, we just need to embrace them wholeheartedly. Project Maths and the emphasis on skills development in the new Junior Cycle Student Awards (JCSA) offer students and teachers new ways of thinking and learning that should improve our 15 year olds’ problem solving capabilities. “The short-comings identified in this and previous PISA reports have informed the changes

that we are introducing through Project Maths and the JCSA.” There is also evidence which suggests that the student centred approaches and ICT activity of Transition Year result in better problem solving skills. Such problem solving skills are promoted and embedded in the six key skills outlined in the new framework for Junior Cycle. “Improvements in ICT, such as high speed broadband being available in all second level schools from September and the new Digital Strategy for Schools which my Department is drafting, will also benefit students.”

Craftea Old Crates Decoupage is just a delightfully fancy term for simple glue and paper decoration! You just mix up some wallpaper paste per the instructions (or use non toxic glue watered down 2:1 with water if kids are involved in the craft), chop up some colourful magazine pages or wrapping paper into equal size squares and glue them onto the crate.

Written by Declan Glynn HAVING just spent a week behind the wheel of the new Nissan Note 1.2 litre petrol-engined super-mini, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with every aspect of the car. The original Nissan Note was a bit of an outsider in the supermini class, but Nissan wants this all-new version to be more of a traditional offering, better suited to taking on the top-selling Ford Fiesta. This new Note is a very good looking car from every angle – with a prominent front grille (which stretches right in to the stylish headlights) and a sharp crease in the bodywork on each side. Efficiency is a big selling point of this car with fuel economy from an amazingly low 3.2l/100km in diesel guise and as low as 3.7l/100km from the petrol engine. I managed to achieve an average fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km during my test drive appraisal and this was in stop-start traffic – very impressive indeed. Add this terrific fuel economy to the fact that the annual road tax for this car is just €190 and you have a car with ultra-low running costs (very important these days). My test car provided great punch from its perky 98bhp engine and this, combined with a very slick 5 speed gearbox, made the driving experience all the more enjoyable. The other major trump card that the new Note has is the extensive equipment list that is available. Thanks to Nissan’s new innovations, ‘premium sector technologies’ are available to supermini customers for the very first time. The specification available

includes an Around View Monitor (AVM), Nissan Connect and Nissan Safety Shield. The AVM provides drivers with a remarkable 360-degree bird’s eye view to take the stress out of reversing. Nissan Connect combines satellite navigation, Bluetooth and audio system features while the Nissan Safety Shield acts as an intelligent copilot to the driver to help them to make the best decisions in all situations. The system combines Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Moving Object Detection – all of which are very effective when put to use. The new Note’s cabin has also been vastly improved. The dials

look classy and the centre console now has a gloss black finish – further enhancing the quality feel of this car. Practicality remains good, with 325 litres of boot space with the floor at its lowest setting while some models have a sliding rear bench which increases boot space to 411 litres – 31 litres more than a VW Golf ! Prices for the Note start at just €15,995 ex works and this proves Nissan’s objective of providing a value-packed car with high equipment levels. TEMPLE BAR LANEWAYS TO GET A NEW FACELIFT A number of back lanes running through Temple Bar will soon be transformed from uninviting disused laneways to vibrant imaginative expressions of creativity by a mix of local creatives, thanks to a new joint initiative by Dublin City Council and Temple Bar Company. The 'Love the Lanes' initiative aims to reclaim less desirable parts of the city centre hub and make them appealing and unique. The project is currently in the early stages of development, with an open call being sent out for artists,

environmentalists, business owners and anyone with an interesting and innovative idea to submit their ideas through the Dublin City Council website. Charlie Lowe, Dublin City Council area manager, encourages anyone with an idea to get involved. "We are calling on anyone with a creative idea to apply to come on board in trialling possible innovative solutions to four laneways in the area initially. Indie Cindy is the fifth album by the Pixies, and their first album in 23 years since Trompe le Monde in 1991. It features all songs from their last extended plays, called EP1, 2 and 3, produced by Gil Norton who produced Doolittle, Bossanova and Trompe le Monde. But have they found the Pixies sound they want? “Not yet. That’s still to come,” lead singer Charles Thompson, who goes by the name Black Francis said. “Rome was not built in a day. I think we needed a little more time to really create something that’s absolutely different but we’re in the process. With this record, we’re moving in that direction.”

The introspective new 13 track album from the ever-changing project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett (aka E) is being described as “an extraordinarily vivid and intimate document of a personal struggle.” This is the 11th full-length release for Eels, whose debut Beautiful Freak was released in 1996. Everett has embarked on a number of non-musical projects as well, including his acclaimed book Things the Grandchildren Should Know and the award winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary about Everett and his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III.

Sheezus is the upcoming third studio album by Lily Allen. The album is Allen’s first body of work since her musical hiatus in 2009 after the release of second studio album It’s Not Me, It’s You (2009). In June 2012, Allen announced that she would be making a return to music revealing she had been recording a new album, continuing to reveal that she would be returning to the use of her professional name. Both singles “Hard out Here” and “Air Balloon” placed in the top ten on the UK Singles Chart proving that she her hiatus wasnt to long and that she is still current.

Indie Cindy is released on April 28th.

The album is scheduled to be released on April 14th.

Sheezus is in all good record stores from May 5th.
